“One day he would return to Britain in triumph and reclaim what he had worked all his life for. John would survive.”

Years have passed since John reclaimed the Imperial Longford shipyard. World War One is on the horizon. From his new base in Southern England, John plots to ramp up his profits and begin an ambitious project to rebuild the whole town of Motbridge.

But there are more problems than the looming European war.

Motbridge’s trade union, led by best friend Leslie Hughes, is gearing up to take on John’s plans. With John’s powerful new friends and a brand new battleship in the making, the standoff between the haves and have nots has begun.

James Farner

James Farner is a professional writer and draws upon his love of fiction and his love of stories that span generations. His signature series Made in Yorkshire was born out of a desire to find out ‘what happened next?’

At the end of every good film, book, or TV show the characters disappear and that’s the end of them. James isn’t alone in the desire to find out what happened to the characters afterwards.

This is how Made in Yorkshire appeared. Starting from 1953 and driving on to the modern day, James explores the different eras of Britain through his colourful cast of characters.

Prior to writing fiction, he enjoyed a career as a freelance writer. His writing has appeared online, in magazines, and in a variety of other publications.

When not writing, he can be found sketching, watching sports, and playing the tin whistle.

Worth the read

This continuation of the life of John Williams who rises from the slums of an industrial town in England to become the owner of its shipyard takes place several years later and prior to WWI.

John has so a farther and farther from his roots and is changing as he gains wealth and prestige. But at what cost? It's sad to watch him change so much as he deals with a failed marriage union strikes, losing friends and making unwise partnerships with politicians and the wealthy.

The one problem I had with this book was its need for editing. It made a bit of a struggle to read at times. In a series this good it is unfortunate.

I would recommend to readers of historical fiction, but be prepared for obvious errors in editing.
