The children of the Grace Field House orphanage must escape a macabre fate before it’s too late.
Life at Grace Field House is good for Emma and her fellow orphans. While the daily studying and exams they have to take are tough, their loving caretaker provides them with delicious food and plenty of playtime. But perhaps not everything is as it seems…
¡NO SOPORTO!
A Peter Pan retelling like you've NEVER seen before!! Emma, Norman and Ray are the brightest kids at the Grace Field House orphanage. And under the care of the woman they refer to as “Mom,” all the kids have enjoyed a comfortable life. Good food, clean clothes and the perfect environment to learn—what more could an orphan ask for? One day, though, Emma and Norman uncover the dark truth of the outside world they are forbidden from seeing.
The Premise
Grand Duke Leuvis is not going down without a magnificent battle and that is exactly what we get in The Promised Neverland vol 11! I won't promise you that Emma wins and Leuvis loses... you'll have to read it for yourself but it is stellar... so, so stellar. The twists and turns. The reveals. Our little monkey and his special role. Adam comes out to play. More allies go down. Emma makes a stand in opposition to everyone's gut instinct. It's EPIC! I loved every moment all the way to the end... because we know nothing is ever easy in the Promised Neverland. There is always another problem to solve, an outcome to subvert and a battle of wills to win.
The Buzz
Of course, we knew what was coming in The Promised Neverland vol 11... the battle between Emma and Leuvis. The buzz around this battle was HUGE! And with good reason. But we also have some other pressing problems... The injured. They are stable but can they travel? Those hunters they took out were just the leaders... what about the rest up at the house?! And the repercussions from the end of the battle?! Ray has to step up... Plus Gilda made a promise to Geezer when he left... if he only comes home with one of them she isn't afraid to use the self destruct...
The Feels
Emma isn't the only kid here who has a heart. Her allies are just as capable as she is sacrificing for the larger group. One for the many. And seeing these kids who have been working so hard to escape make hard choices is really very heart breaking. The Promised Neverland vol 11 has its surprising moments, but it also has these very real moments of soulful struggle. They don't want to die. They're all so young! But there are timing issues. There is the destruction of the hunting grounds to consider...
On a more light-hearted note we also get the big reveal... Geezer's name!! YES!! I wouldn't have suspected what it is...
The Visuals
There are many wonderful moments captured through the art in The Promised Neverland vol 11. The battles scenes were brought to life so I could totally envision Leuvis epic evasions and movements. We have the large cast scenes where we see all the human children come together to triumph over their oppressors... But the best by far was seeing what the evil human allying with the monsters has in store for Emma and her growing team of children!
The Promised Neverland vol 11 sets us up for the next step in Emma's journey to make not only a safe haven for all children... but a place where they can all live in peace. You won't want to miss her epic battle with Grand Duke Leuvis, nor its mind blowing conclusion!!

It's a vicious fight as all the kids must work together to take out just one demon. This monster is the ALpha hunter and it won't be easy. He's taken out so many kids so far that now Emma and crew will have to use all their wit and strength to overcome it. This whole volume is just one gigantic battle scene save the last two chapters but it is damn entertaining throughout.
I really enjoyed this arc and while the ending felt a bit safe I am intrigued how we move to the next part. I like how each arc feels different. First being a escape arc, second a mystery, 3rd a survival, I am eager to see what awaits us now.
Chapter 89. Convening Even with the everyone's plan, Leuvis is still able to counter it. He is still able to hurt Pete badly even with his sense gone. This is insane. He is a monster indeed. I hope they be okay, soon!!!!
Chapter 90. Let's Win That little pet of the demon is annoying. Gosh. Well Emma thought of the plan. Gosh. Please make it work. Everyone work hard for this, let all sacrifices be not in vain.
Chapter 91. All We've Got OMG! They are able to execute their plan well. And OMG Emma is able to understand the regeneration of the demon. Ray caught up to it easily also. Gosh. They are pure genius! Pure genius!!!!! Gosh I'm so proud of them all!
Chapter 92. Fire Away OMGGGG WHAT THE FUCK. THAT FUCKING DEMON. OMMMGGGG. EEMMMMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Chapter 93. The End OMGGGGGGG. EMMMAAAA. She fired it! Unnamed guy did it. Leuvis is dead! Yesssssss! OMG YAAASSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Chapter 94. All Of Us, Alive OMG! They all kill the demons! Yayyy. But Emma is gravely injured. This is very difficult knowing a lot of children are injured! And they need to go away quick before reinforcements notice their leaders are gone. Gosh. They need to think and hurry.
Chapter 95. Let's Go Home Aaaaww thank goodness they are all like Emma. Never leaving anyone behind. The unnamed guy even agreed not to leave anyone behind which is surprising and amazing. Wow. Not to mention they are able to destroy Goldy Pond. Thank goodness. Fantastic!
Chapter 96. Welcome Home OMGGG!!! Emma is okay. Everyone made it to B06-32. They are all okay. Now Emma has a plan on how to get Phil and everyone else. They need to go back to Grace field maybe because there is a sure way there to human place. OMG. How will they do it? But I'm just happy they are all okay! Thank goodness.
Chapter 97. The Future You Want Awwwwww. They are finally making a plan to save Phil and everyone! Also Yugo and everyone agrees with Emma's plan. Which is to save every kid from all plants and to go to the seven walls and try to make new promise so they will finally be happy and free.
An amazing final battle, a battle of wits and Emma’s dream starting to live on in others. A dream that moves to the next chapter and in a way that I expected and yet with so much else going on in the undercurrent that you can tell there are still many pawns on the table.
As usual, this was another great volume and I'm excited for what's to come!! But I'm glad this one didn't have a cliffhanger ending so I can actually go to bed now. xD
Note: As the very first chapter contains a rather huge twist in itself, it's damn near impossible to write a review without minor spoilers that reveal what that initial twist is. If you want to go in completely blind, don't read this!
Grace Field House is an orphanage closed off from the rest of the world by huge walls that serve as a barrier. What goes on outside is a complete mystery. No one knows what lies beyond the walls or how the world came to be the way it is. In spite of these seemingly grim circumstances, Emma, Ray, Norman and all their orphan friends live wonderfully happy lives under the guidance of the orphanage caretaker Isabella. Delicious meals every day. An incredible education that most people of the past could only dream of. Many games, toys, outdoor activities and other fun hobbies are provided so that no children ever feel lonely, bored or unloved. In spite of being a lone orphanage full of children with no homes or families, it seems to be the happiest place on earth where everyone is loved and taken care of.
The children are free to live as they please so long as they pass their exams and never venture beyond the walls. Depending on the circumstances, children are usually shipped out of the orphanage between the ages of 6-12 to be adopted by a loving family in another safe area. Or so that's what the children have always been led to believe. When Emma, Norman and Ray's friend Connie says her farewells when finding out that a family has chosen to adopt her, Emma discovers that Connie left her favorite stuffed rabbit behind by accident. That night, Emma plans to sneak out the gate with Norman to return it to her before she's gone from the orphanage. Upon breaking the rules of leaving the walls to give their friend a proper farewell, they discover the horrifying truth of their existence.
Connie hasn't been adopted by a loving family, she's been murdered, processed into food and shipped off as a meal for humanoid monsters that feed on the brains of children. Grace Field House is not an orphanage, it's a cattle farm where human children are raised as food so their brains can be harvested for consumption, the quality of the flavor being determined by the child's intelligence which is why they all receive such intense educations from the moment they're born. Worst of all, Isabella, the woman they loved as a mother is the one providing the monsters with dead kids. The dreadful truth traumatizes Emma and Norman, so the two conspire with Ray to hatch a plan so they can free themselves and their friends from experiencing the fate as Connie and all the children that were shipped out before her.
While this sounds like a huge spoiler, all of this happens in the very first chapter and the series is 181 chapters long, so it's actually a very small part of the overall narrative. Now that that's out of the way, It's time to delve into my feelings on the series!
It's been a while since I've had so many mixed feelings about a manga. Here's why. The first major arc of the story is some of the best writing in this medium I've scene in a long time. The cat and mouse games played between the children and their adult caretaker is pure genius and had me on the edge of my seat for five entire volumes in a row. The psychological horror, suspense and tactics utilized reminded me of some of my all time favorite series in the medium such as 20th Century Boys, the later half of Attack on Titan and the highest points of Death Note where Light and L were constantly setting up mind traps for each other. The fact that it's between a bunch of little orphan kids and a cold and calculating adult who’s even more clever than they are made the stakes all the more higher.
On top of this, not knowing much about the outside world or just what purpose the humanoid monsters serve in the grand scheme of things benefit the stakes of the narrative even more. It makes it feel like a hopeless struggle with no true way out. Even if the children succeed in outsmarting their cruel master and escaping their predestined deaths on the farm, what's waiting for them outside after they make a theoretical escape could potentially be even worse. I was thrilled throughout the entire first arc because of its masterfully intense execution with brilliant characters, intelligent dialogue and constant emotional distress which ended on a huge tearjerking finale. After the first arc, I really thought The Promised Neverland was going to go down as one of my favorite manga of all time next to Berserk, Monster, Goodnight PunPun and a few others, but everything that came after the first arc ended was... meh.
It's painful to say that, but that's just the way it is. After a complete masterpiece of a first arc, the rest of the story feels like it was written by a completely different author. The pacing and world building become a mess. The characters become dumb, shallow, one-dimensional versions of themselves. The genius strategies and mind games are replaced by baffling conveniences, deus ex machinas and things being solved way too simply for no real reason. None of the new villains are as compelling or emotionally complex as Isabella. I didn't find myself caring about any of the new conflicts because they always ended with very little risks, sacrifices and people getting out of situations they really shouldn't have other than because the plot demanded it.
I kept expecting things to pick up and get better because of how shockingly good the first arc was, but it remained consistently mediocre with very few strong moments scattered in between long periods of dullness. If volumes 1-5 were a 9/10, I would consider volumes 6-20 a 4/10 at most. It was never truly bad, but it was far from good. After finishing chapters 1-37 which is where the first story arc ends, I think it's best to just leave the rest up to your imagination. The first arc alone also serves as a great self-contained story that ties up most loose ends, so the rest just feels like a bonus anyways.
