Asta and Yuno grew up together, abandoned at the same church. They both determined to become Magic Knights... Yuno's abilities soon grew to genius levels of power and control while Asta didn't show even a spark of magic and made up for it by training hard physically. It became apparent to both when they received their grimores, Yuno a coveted 4-leaf clover and Asta an unheard of black 5-leaf clover, that they were each other's biggest competition when it came to achieving their goals of becoming the next sorcerer emperor.


The Premise

The traitor is revealed in Black Clover vol 16 and it makes for a poignant read! We have come to see in the previous 15 volumes that Julius, the Wizard King, is the perfect role model for Asta. He truly wants to see equality in the Clover Kingdom. There is a reason Yami is so loyal to the man and we see that he's willing to prove that loyalty. Needless to say we get to see Julius in action and learn about his special grimore!! It was an exciting volume for this reason along... but there are many more reasons too. Licht, the leader of the Midnight Sun motives is revealed. Asta gets between Mereoleona Vermillion and her foe (watch out there Asta!) We see the end of the Black Bulls castle battle. And the Midnight Sun's purpose is realized!


The Buzz

Guys, guys, guys I was blown away, blown away by that end!! Licht had a really, really good reason to be doing what he's been doing... And its going to change everything with the Magic Knight squads. To top it off we had a most excellent battle with the Wizard King! I totally wish Yami had gotten there just 5 minutes earlier and he totally would have changed everything. This is why the Black Clover series totally blows me away! There are so many characters that you are never really sure what's going to happen next and Black Clover vol 16 actually banks on that fact with this cliffhanger.


The Feels

I don't think the revelation of Licht's motives will shock anyone. There have been plenty of hints along the way. What made me so curious though is the motive behind the humans involved. Why'd these two betray their friend? I think Asta will come into play a lot here... in fact, its foreshadowed in Black Clover vol 16 when he mentions... What are they talking about? Aren't they human too?! He just hasn't met anyone that he can truly stay angry and rageful at. Obviously this is a swing volume that connects arcs and what a great job it does throwing us into this new extreme situation among the Magic Knights!


The Visuals

I love Black Clover art! I love the way Yuki Tabata uses space on the page, covering spreads and doing close ups. It's so enjoyable too how he intercuts between different situations and makes us wait. Yami blew me away in Black Clover vol 16 because I think he was used as a weapon against the reader to build anticipation! And its not wasted. It's pretty heartbreaking. The frames of the big event that the Wizard King stops are pretty magnificent. I could totally imagine the way that would look in real life. And I have to mention that there are tons of characters but you can easily keep them straight because the designs are that good! Seriously there is nothing keeping you from reading this series.

Black Clover vol 16 was a dynamite introduction to the plans of the Midnight Sun. It's shocking, awe-inspiring and epic! There is a battle we've been waiting 15 volumes to see (hint the Wizard King!) and an oath that is made by a most impressive man. This is just the beginning of a battle filled arc to save the Clover Kingdom from a most unlikely enemy... until next time in Black Clover vol 17!!

OMG the story really heats up and although it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out a certain character is in fact one of the bad guys but the plot twist near the end of this volume still blows my mind right off! 4.5 stars!

I am not going to bother writing a review about the previous 4 volumes, since they were a complete waste of time, filled with softporn scenes where they were having fun at a festival or were looking at naked women in the hot springs. Then it was just a ridiculously long and tensionless tournament to find the strongest warriors for attacking the stronghold of the bad guys. Nothing of substance was going on in it. It was just an excuse to introduce a hundred side characters who don’t matter in the longrun, and they had these team battles where they were supposed to be using tactics although it was always coming down to the hax powers of a single character. There were no stakes whatsoever since there was nothing dangerous in those the battles. The only thing everyone cared about was the last fight and only because it was just Yuno being overpowered as always, and Asta being very jealous as always. It was something we already know since chapter 1 as well as something they still didn’t elaborate on why are they rivals.

After all this fuss, they finally go there, beat the last mini bosses, and reach the main room where the big bad boss is sleeping. We switch to the traitor revealing himself to the magic emperor and turns out he is the big bad boss. He was none other than the one with the burned face. But how is it possible to be him, you might ask? The big boss is sleeping back at the stronghold. Something-something magic lets you possess other bodies. That’s it. So this guy manages to kill the magic emperor, and he did it through cunningness and not broken powers by abusing the good nature of Julius.

The scene where the magic emperor sacrifices his life to save the people in the city is one of the very few legit good moments in this god awful manga. At the same time, it was a plot hole. Because Julius had an assistant who can read peoples’ minds. He could have checked out everyone’s minds whenever he felt like it and he would have found him. This death was completely unnecessary, and so was the reveal of who the traitor was all along. Which by the way was the guy everybody expected all along so it wasn’t even a big twist.

And it’s far from over when you see the bullshit that follows. The Big Bad Boss awakens and turns evil all the warriors we wasted 4 volumes in seeing them fight for no good reason. Yeah, the hero has to fight his own friends turned evil because magic. Such bullshit!

Okay! This book just turned everything and it's great! It was expected to happen - but it happened at the right time and way. Our main guy and magic Wizard King dies, betrayals and plot twist half of our cast are now elves and evil. But, there is a question of how it all will end and how they will "transform" back. As I am sure Tabata will not have the balls to just.. let them be evil and the only way of stopping them would be killing them. But that is for another time.

There was a heavy hectic flashback in this book. And it was very messy. I presume that it was done on purpose and that this was the intention as the readers should be confused - but it just makes me go 'huh, did I miss anything?' rather than 'cool, I love it!'

I am glad this switch happened and I look forward to what's next! It really seems that Tabata had this "longterm" plan in mind and I look forward to reading it!

Humans VS. Elves





"Asta: You're mad at humans for takin' something' away from you, right? I'm still fuzzy on the details! But we're all people! I want you to tell me your side of the story, and then I'm gonna tell you mine! And nobody's dying until that happens, okay?"

[...]

Asta: "We're the same. Aren't we? So we should be able to talk things over. Both sides are mad because we lost someone we loved. I've been thinking a lot about this. Everyone's fighting because we can't forgive the other side. So how do we get rid of all that anger and hatred? I know I'm not very smart, so I can't some up with the right answer. But we can do it. I mean, we have to, don't we?"

Julius: "My goal, the future that I worked so hard to build, I believe it isn't that far off."

Asta: "Whether you're nobility, a citizen, or just a commoner, or even if you're not a human."

Julius: "It's a future that all of you will create. A nation that's free of hatred and prejudice."

Asta: "I just want a kingdom where all of us get along and laugh together. And when I'm the Wizard King we'll have one. You'll see!"

Along with Haikyu, these are the two mangas I am currently following the series closely. I am already up to date with the anime, and re-experiencing the events this way is certainly different, but still amazing. In this edition, we follow the Royal knights in their storming of the Eye of the Midnight Sun base, and THAT scene occurs involving our beloved Wizard King. I continue to love this manga series (and anime of course). Overall, another 5 star read to continue the trend of this series.

Buono lo scontro, unica cosa decente del volume.
La saga inizia ad ingranare, MA ci sono molte incongruenza:
1) troppo complessa la storia della trasmigrazione, Vangeance che assume l'aspetto di Licht, ma non è Licht, perchè questo casino?
2) Licht (che non è Licht) non può usare le magie di Vangeance, ma tutte le altre anime trasmutate possono usare le magie dei grimori dei corpi in cui sono reincarnati?
3) Vangeance dice di conoscere l'anima presente nel suo corpo da sempre, ma poche pagine dopo ci mostra che l'anima si risveglia solo dopo che Vangeance ha preso il grimorio, quindi intorno ai 15 anni, vuol dire che conosce l'imperatore magico da pressappoco lo stesso tempo.
4) Licht ha lo stesso grimorio di Asta, ma le magie che usano sono diverse?

There's no way to talk about this volume without spoiling it so let's just say... this is probably the big turning point for the series with some huge plot ramifications that I cannot yet tell whether they're good or not. Lots of big reveals that may cheapen every character interaction and emotional story beat in the series thus far. Is this good, because the characters have been mostly garbage? Or is it bad, ruining a series' worth of attempts? I can't be sure. But... it gets a second star for actually having plot progress that doesn't come off as a generic "BY THE POWER OF FRIENDSHIP!!!!!!!!!"

The story just got even crazier than usual. The fight between Patry and Wizard King was so good. All of my unanswered questions are finally being answered one by one. 😀

Ch 141-151

This volume is one of the painful or should I say the start of the excruciating journey for me. Still a good genesis for that angsty arc tho 🤚🏽

I love this volume, but it wasn't explained something really important in the ending. But, well, now they're really in trouble.

This volume is one of the best in the series. It was definitely a page turner and I could not put this book down. The plot twist is shocking and I'm really interested in where the series goes from here. On a side note, I realized that the anime is just about the same stage with this volume. I presumed before the next volume comes out, if the anime don't take a break it will be ahead. Either way, I'm still excited for the next volume.

It was a very good volume in general. I mentioned before that the Wizard King (Julius Novachrono) is one of my favourite characters in the entire series and I stand by it. He truly shone throughout the book and his fight was brilliant in my opinion. Other than that I found the book a bit weaker compared to the previous ones especially. Storywise, important things continue to happen and I'm curious about what happens next. Though this whole elf reincarnation thing is not perfect, it is still interesting enough to keep me reading.

Okaaaay, wow, umm...wow, I have a LOT of conflicting feelings regarding this volume.

First and foremost, FUCKING SPOILERS AHEAD, FOLKS!!!!

With that out of the way, Julius's death was truly heartbreaking. He was easily one of my favorite characters in this series and I adored him from start to finish. Seeing him duke it out with Licht was awesome and I'm glad he at least got to show his stuff before he died. And I'm glad Yami was the last person by his side when he died, it really heightened the emotional impact.

THAT BEING SAID, I FUCKING KNEW IT! I knew William was the traitor, I FUCKING KNEW IT!!

But unfortunately, his final fight with Licht and his death were slightly tarnished by Licht's motivations and actions. Here's the deal: I'm not saying that Licht should forgive the humans for what they did. I would never dream of doing that. HOWEVER. Licht puts himself on a FUCKING PEDESTAL OF VIRTUE and acts like the humans are the barbaric ones, when he is ACTIVELY REINCARNATING HIS PEOPLE INTO HUMAN BODIES AND TURNING THEM AGAINST THEIR FRIENDS AND FAMILY. I'm sorry folks, that is some grade-A bullshit and I HATE IT. Not that Licht has been an interesting villain from the start, in fact he's basically the stereotypical revenge-seeking villain with little to no personality outside of being spiteful and deceitful. But for him to try to act like he's above humans and he's going to make the world better by eliminating the Clover Kingdom when he's bodysnatching people left and right is so horribly hypocritical that I can't take him seriously.

And yes, I understand that Tabata is trying to show how being pushed down and beaten for so long, eventually losing your loved ones, can turn a person evil and make them act in violent and hypocritical ways. First off, this isn't original at all, much less in this series where the seems to be the main motivation of LITERALLY EVERY SINGLE ANTAGONIST, and second this theme has been hammered home for so long that seeing the big baddie do it doesn't make it interesting or compelling. All that I care about is WHY DID HE HAVE TO TAKE MY BABIES, LEAVE MY BABIES ALONE!!!

All in all, this was still a good volume and good way to send off Julius as and finally move the conflict past finding some fucking magic stones. But Licht is an uninspiring villain and his motivations and actions are horseshit. Take with that what you will.

Incroyable ce tome !!!!!

Point positif :

- déjà vraiment le plus incroyable c'est la révélation que vengence partage son corps avec Patry et ducoup vengence qui et un peu pour les 2 les laisse combattre. Ducoup on a un combat incroyable. Avec la fin pépite ou Patry lance une attaque pour tuer tous le royaume et ducoup l'Empereur est obligé de les sauver mais ce retrouve transpercé par l'épée de lumière de Patry ducoup "on a la mort de julius".

- on a le flashback elfe qui est juste incroyable.

- Par contre le discours de julius incroyable qui veut que toute classe sociale soit ensemble comme asta qui le dis à ryah qui le dis lui même qu'il dis la vérité, mais plus qui c'est fait "trahit" Par quelqu'un qui disait la même chose il se laisse pas berné.

- ducoup Patry déclenche la réincarnation de tout les elfes avec les Pierres magique. Ducoup on voit plein gens qui se transforme en elfe comme yuno rill gosh, luck qu'on voit utiliser les pouvoirs des elfes sa force est grave décuplé noëlle et krish ne peuvent rien faire.

Point négatif :

C'était pas non plus ouf la fin du combat avec gosh henry Gordon et grey, mais quand même j'enlève pas des point prc le tome mérite grave 5/5.

I guess Tabata is trying to take on the Pain Arc now? Anyway, the Wizard King is seemingly killed by the leader of the EotMS, but I don't think this "death" will last long because I'm pretty sure he's meant to be around later on. But, also, Naruto killed off a Hokage or several, so it would make sense for Tabata to emulate the same.

As is tradition (apparently), the pace goes faster and faster. Licht seemingly kills the Wizard King, then it turns out he's not actually Licht but some other Elf-supremacist with Licht's face. Maybe? And the vessels for the other Elves' power are killed and instantaneously resurrected as the Elves, I think. But also Yuno and Luck and the paint guy get possessed by evil Elf magic? Things kind of kept happening, and I was just letting it run rather than pay close attention....

Not-Licht uses Unlimited Blade Works, which is funny. Not enough Jump manga crib from Nasu.

I forgot to write about this last volume, but Henry was cool. It was more the hype for his house-mecha that ended that volume than his actual feats here that interested me, as well as finally seeing Gordon do stuff.

Holy crap, a lot of stuff went down in this arc, and now suddenly friends have been turned into foes, and everything is going very badly.

One, what Licht did was dirty, but I'm not too worried about Julius. He's the Wizard King, which makes him the strongest mana user in the Clover Kingdom, and he also controls time. There is no way he hasn't set up some 'in case I die' magic. This is shonen manga after all.

Also, Licht is apparently not Licht, but another elf who looked very similar to him. However, he is now going around pretending to be him. The flashback was a bit rushed, but it is clear the elves were betrayed by the humans hundreds of years ago, and the real Licht potentially cast a reincarnation spell on everyone, and that is why they are able to return in other people's bodies. But, we are only learning this from the fake Licht's perspective, so for all we know, something else may have gone wrong all those years ago.

Hopefully, things become more clear in the next volume.

First off, JULIUS NOOO WHY DID HE HAVE TO DIE HE WAS THE BEST I SWEAR

Second, lots of questions. Here’s a bulleted list:
- What happened to the elves?
- Who was William and how did Licht get into his body?
- How did Julius not notice “William” was the imposter?
- Who’s fake Licht?
- Where’s real Licht?
- Why did some people turn into elves?
- Why did they have to take my boys Luck, Rill, Yuno and turn them into elves?
- Why was Vaccum Girl’s salamander so huge?
- Why didn’t we get more Yami and Julius backstory?
- Where the heck are Charmy, Magna, and Vanessa?
- Who’s going to be the next wizard king (I know it’s going to be Asta or Yuno but before they get there. I swear if it’s the king, we’re throwing hands).
- When is Finral coming back?
- Will Fuegoleon ever wake up?
- Where are the other captains and have they also been turned like Rill?

That is the extent of it. As you can see, I have no idea what is going on.

Battles between monsters (Big Ol’ Sticky Salamander versus Black Bulls base) gives off a pretty fun battle! I have commented before but the detail that Yuki Tabata puts into the pages is impressive. On some, it is very simple but on others the textures are very apparent. This technique creates very enjoyable pages, and I wonder if this series wouldn’t benefit from enlarged pages? I know the detail is not at the level of Berserk or anything, but there are pages where the readers could benefit from being able to enjoy the details a bit more. The revelation of the leader of the Eye of The Midnight!!! Page 143!!! This volume has so much in it! On a side note, I absolutely love how the corners of the panels in which are flashbacks are done. You immediately see them and know…it is something I cannot say I see often enough in American made comics. To be able to distinguish immediately is an art technique that Yuki Tabata definitely should impart on fellow artists. A lot…lot to unpack.

The secret of the elves and the master plan of Licht is finally revealed. And it's a doozy!

Seriously, EVERYTHING that happened in the volume, I didn't see coming. I need the next volume. NOW!

Wow this one was great. I wasn’t expecting the stakes to escalate so much so quickly, but I loved it. This was the change that this story needed. I feel like I was complaining a lot about the repetitive nature of this overall story, but wow did this one change everything. I loved that there was no chance to breath, things were going bad on every page and I was eating it up, hope to see more in future volumes.

¿Vieron cuando sienten el inminente final de varios personajes? Hay como una mezcla de adrenalina, duda, ansiedad y tristeza, toda mezclada dentro tuyo porque no sabes cuando ni cómo va a pasar. Bueno, así podría describir este tomo.

Aquí al fin vemos cuál era el objetivo final de los malditos elfos. Porque sí, detrás de los villanos resulta que eran todos elfos. Ahora, lo que no me explico y me sorprende una barbaridad, es Yuno...

The Black Bulls Hideout goes on the offensive thanks to Henry's magic. Then a battle between the Wizard King and the leader of the Eye Of The Midnight Sun brings with it some massive revelations, and a massive shift in the balance of power.

I was right - big things happen in this one. Nothing's going to be the same again after this, and I don't say that lightly.
