This is a collection of the sixth six short stories in the Caverns and Creatures series. It includes the following Pain in the Aasimar Cocky LitRPG Taint Team Rusty Mom Bone The Wang is the Hardest Part Cross My Fart and Hope to Die If you've already purchased all of these books, there is nothing new for you here. If you haven't yet purchased any, you can save a few bucks by buying this collection. If you've only purchased some of these already, you'll have to do some math.
What's to say? This is the 6th collection of 6 short stories set in Robert Bevan's "Caverns & Creatures" universe. Either you're already a fan of the series and the books, in which case you know what you are in for, or you are coming at this series from the wrong end.
So, is it good? In short, yes, again assuming your sense of humor runs towards stories with titles like "Taint Team", "The Wang Is The Hardest Part" and "Cross My Fart And Hope To Die".
Still here? Ok, some of the stories are better than others. The ones listed above all managed more than one out-loud chuckle to outright laugh reading them. The other three weren't as good, but not unfun either. My only complaint really is how hard each of these stories pushes the "Tim's an alcoholic" trope. It's fairly front and center in all 6 stories, and honestly, it seems like a) that's all Tim's character is around to do at this point and b) Tim is still nominally the voice of the story, which means Julian, Dave and Cooper generally all get less page time than him. I liked it better in the earlier short stories when the group did something and THEN Tim got to go for a drink - it somehow made for more balanced screen time - and Tim wasn't just a complaining bit of dead wood.
If there was a blue collar comedy tour of the book world Robert Bevan would surely be leading it. After all these novels and short stories in this series he is still one of the very authors who can make me laugh out loud, loud enough that my daughter had to ask what I was laughing at - fart joke I replied. Coming from rural Georgia I went to college and became an engineer, I have travelled the world and now live in Asia and have for the last thirty years but I guess some of the redneck is still there. I recently marked down a collection o short stories and noted how rare it is to find anyone who can competently write short stories, well Robert Bevan has mastered the format. I really love these Caverns and Creatures novels and short stories/novellas and really hope the author continues to write them for a very long time to come. Highly recommended
Bevan is still making me laugh inappropriately, causing my wife to wake up and hit me. These bruises are your fault, Bevan. Still funny, still silly, still awkward to talk about to another human being.
Cooper, Dave, and Julian are all pretty much their normal awesome selves. Unfortunately, Tim is still a bit of a drunk asshole.
That's the only bit that I'm not enjoying in the recent novels/collections. Not saying he's going to suddenly become less of an alcoholic, or maybe be less of a dick, but maybe having him go to an in game version of a psychologist wouldn't hurt. Would be nice to have a Tim I don't want to punch in the groin around, as I'm beginning to wonder how believable it is anyone is still willing to be around him at this point.
Another Great collection by Bevan. Each story is more entertaining than the last one. This is a great time filler while waiting for the next C&C book. Chances are if you're reading this you've already read the first 5 books and the first 6 in the C&C series. IF not what are you looking at the 6th book in a series for go buy the first ones and read from the beginning.
The Critical Failures series has been one of my guilty pleasure reads for a while but I just didn't connect with most of the stories in this one. The potty humor seemed less a seasoning to the narrative and more the whole point. Took me six months to finish it and I usually binge them in a day. Overall rating: meh.
