Renowned sports journalist Dan Wetzel shoots and scores with Epic Lionel Messi , an inspiring young readers biography of a soccer great who rose from an underdog to a champion!
Featuring comic-style illustrations by Jay Reed!
Lionel Messi has taken the soccer world by storm. He scored the most goals in a season. He's racked up championships. There was even a statue built in his honor. Despite the accolades, he's still hungry for more goals, more championships, more opportunities to shine on the soccer pitch. Messi's drive to succeed has motivated him ever since he first stepped on his local, worn down field as a kid.
Yet his success didn't come without bumps in the road. Diagnosed with a career-threatening medical condition at ten, Messi refused to give up on his dream, and went on to amass one of the greatest careers in sports history. Filled with sports action and bold illustrations, this thrilling biography details the rise of a living soccer legend.

Lionel Messi scored some of the most impressive shots in soccer and is widely known as one of the best players to ever have played this sport. This book covers how Lionel got started playing soccer, how he ended up in Spain although he is Argentine, his struggle with growth hormones, and many of his best soccer games.
I am not a soccer fan, but I could not put this book down. I was very interested in Lionel as a person and was surprised how easy it was to follow and care about his soccer career, even knowing very little about the sport. There was only one section of the book that I started to get bored by all the game summaries and I would have liked more about his personal life, but overall this was a very fun read.
Born in soccer-mad Rosario, Argentina, Lionel Messi grew up to be one of the best soccer players in the world. This book, part of the popular Epic Athletes series, describes his formative years and his keen interest in soccer, an interest he pursued almost from birth. Arguably, there's never been quite a competitor in this sport as Messi. Anyone who enjoys descriptions of soccer matches and clutch plays will enjoy the play by play in this particular book. Those who think Messi's road to success and fame on the Barcelona team was smooth will learn otherwise in this book since it describes some of his physical challenges and the injections he had to administer for three years. Being separated from most of his family and all that was familiar was challenging too. The illustrations in the comic panels at the end of the book and throughout capture the speed and agility of this talented man. I wish there had been more insight into him. While he appears to be quite reticent and not particularly talkative, it would have been useful to know more about him off the field as well as on. Still, many readers will love feeling as though they are right on the field with him, watching him set yet another record and score yet another goal.
I recommend this book to anyone who likes easy sports books. It's about Lionel Messi and his journey to becoming one of the best soccer players of all time.
