In the Red Desert, a fierce battle rages against the king of trogs, threatening the lives of Mel, her friends, and thousands of refugees from the north. Can they survive the relentless trog attacks and escape looming starvation?

Marget, a former house maid, has reached the limit of her patience. She and her two companions, Charl and Jaine, have come into an extraordinary power. Together, they can create a towering elemental made of fire and water---but only if they learn to get along and to control their talents.

Award-winning mystery and fantasy author, EM Kaplan, was an 80s kid, spoonfed on six channels of a VHF dial TV. She grew up reading Agatha Christie and Edgar Rice Burroughs in rural Arizona where there were no sidewalks but plenty of tumbleweeds. A former wannabe spy, trombonist, toilet-cleaner, beginner ninja, and subversive marketeer, she currently lives in the frozen north with her husband, author JD Kaplan, kids, and dog.

I gobbled up Books 1 and 2 of the series and have been eagerly awaiting the next. It’s finally here and well worth the wait. I feared that I wouldn’t remember who was who, but Kaplan writes characters so memorable, that I easily recognized the voices. I love the way the characters have evolved and grown. Plot twists are as they should be. They come as surprises, but when you think about it, it makes perfect sense and you go all “doh.” I love Kaplan’s Josie Tucker Mysteries, but hope she will consider writing more fantasy. This series was quite different from any other I have read and I strongly recommend it.

Loved It

I loved this series. I read one book after the other. The pace was fast enough to keep me interested and yet the characters were well rounded and believeable. I highly recommend these books.

This was a great conclusion! I really enjoyed this book. It had twists that were exciting and I didn't always see coming. The last installment answered some questions as well. Anyone who has followed Mel, Ott, and the others since the first book will be eager to get their hands on this one!
