When a rotting corpse suddenly appears and starts butchering Raynham’s youths, there’s really only one question that needs answering:
Is this faceless and rotting monster Peter Howard, or isn’t it?
Problem is, Peter Howard died 15 years ago. So how can he possibly be back from the dead and murdering people with such relentless and sadistic brutality?
Peter's mother Malicia, who's just been released from the lunatic asylum, may have the answers to the crazy puzzle, but the two detectives investigating the deaths don’t even know the right questions to ask her yet.
Mr. Ugly: It really doesn't matter if you lock your doors; you simply aren't safe anymore.
Wol-vriey writes eXXXtreme horror fiction, and also some surrealist stuff.
To date, he has published over forty novels in both genres.
His horror novels include: EnterPAINment, LGBT, The Virgin, Marriage, Women, Nightmare Fuel 1 & 2, Haunted House XXX 1 & 2, and How To Succeed in Life.
On the surrealist side of things, he is the author of Vegan Zombie Apocalypse, Vegan Vampire Vaginas, Vagina Mundi, and the disturbing and unsettling Dr. Orgasm.
Existing on the cusp of all things nefarious, Wol-vriey's fictional town of Raynham, Massachusetts is the setting of his latest jaunt into the horrible. Mr. Ugly is indeed hideous; a ghoul dripping with maggots and ichor with murder as his sole intent. The author provides us with a cast of characters with woes and secrets, bad luck and questionable intentions. It is easy to get caught up in the story of Mr. Ugly and his wicked mother, a soul deeply involved in the practice of black magic. As the story unfolds and backgrounds are revealed, we are drawn deeper into the Stygian territory that marks the edges of foul destiny. To enter Raynham, one must be prepared for anything. However, be cautious. There is no protection from risen evil. For fans of carnage and revenge, this is your book.
Wol-vriey. Who is that? Up until a couple months back, I didn’t know. How did I not know?!? Now I am going to read each of his books, one by one, and catch up on what I’ve been missing. If you’re a fan of hard-core, serious horror, don’t make the mistake I made. Acquaint yourself with Wol-vriey’s amazing writing right NOW!!!
”Evil is like yeast: a little goes a hellishly long way . . .”
After fifteen years, Malicia Howard is released from a psychiatric hospital and it doesn’t take long for hell to break loose...almost literally. Rumored to be a witch, Malica plans to summon the forces of evil and do everything it takes to seek revenge upon those who have wronged her.
Terror suddenly strikes the town of Raynham, Massachusetts as people are being brutally slain. A few people bear the misfortune of witnessing the onslaught and describe a monster—an undead, rotting man whose “...face—indeed his entire head—was a swollen purple mess through which grubs and worms wriggled beneath the surface of the skin.” Hence the name, Mr. Ugly.
Two detectives, Frank Sullivan (“Sully”) and James ‘Apache’ Johnson, are tasked with investigating the gruesome murders. Apache has been around town long enough to know that the murders have not been committed by human hands—that there’s a supernatural element involved. Sully needs a little more convincing but before long, he’ll come to accept the seemingly impossible, too.
Excellent writing and brilliant creativity combine to create a most entertaining story. I *LOVED* that the author was not afraid to curb the violence, gore and atrocities. In fact, this story has some of the best explicit scenes of carnage I’ve read. There’s also a good dose of humor to ease the mounting tension at times. Apache’s apology to Malica regarding her, um...lady parts, had me in stitches!
For fans of horror, especially extreme horror, this book (and this author) is an absolute MUST!
I really enjoyed this book. It has everything in. Blood gore, twists and turns, violence and lust, vengeance and revenge, love and have and all of it extreme in a great story with great characters. Malice was great character and I loved her age and how she fought. Definitely worth reading.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
Based on the cover of this book, I figured Mr. Ugly was some type of zombie... but he was so much more than that! I don't want to give away any spoilers, but I'll try to hit some of the main points of the book.
The first character we meet is Malicia, who was recently released from a psychiatric institution. She definitely is not crazy though.... no, she is powerful, cunning, and very vindictive. Malicia is hellbent on making the people in the town of Raynham pay for their sins. Upon returning home from the institution, she unleashes something very powerful and very deadly.
Gruesome killings begin in the town (and I do mean GRUESOME!). The killings are done by a zombie-like creature dubbed Mr. Ugly because he is so fucked up looking, he barely resembles a man. Soon, it is revealed that Mr. Ugly is actually Malicia's dead son Peter, resurrected to wreak havoc.
I admit, when it was revealed how Peter died and why Malicia is so upset, I couldn't help but sympathize with her character. It's amazing how far she goes off the deep end! I became really invested in the story and I'll admit, I was kind of bummed when it was all over!
This book had several moments that made me laugh despite its brutality. Wol-vriey has a way of providing vivid descriptors that really place you into the story. Maybe I'm a little bit twisted, but one of my favorite lines in the whole book is "Like a punted football, a man's severed head was rolling toward them from the main entrance."
This was a brutal, gory novel that was so much fun to read! Wol-vriey does not hold back from describing even the most awful scenario. He definitely has a talent for the macabre. Great book!!
I gave this a 4 overall for a book of the horror genre. It will definitely be a good read to the standard new reader who’s just starting to venture into gore and horror. The storyline started off great, it had potential. Malicia Howard was fresh from the psych hospital, ready to wreck vengeance on unsuspecting town folks. Characters had depth and were interesting. Wolvriey is good at that. The story goes nicely. Albeit a tad abrupt at the end. It felt like the ending was rushed.
On a personal scale, this book is a 3. Mainly because the storyline lacked the exciting factor. There was less humour and sickness in this book compared to his others. But it would be unfair to rate the book according to stereotyping the type of writing hence this book still scores a 4 from me.
This book straight up gave me nightmares. I’m not even kidding. I read this over the course of two days and had nightmares from this book both nights. I could have read it in one day, the story is that compelling, but as the day waned to evening, I grew concerned about how I would sleep if I read into the night. It was too late, though. This book grabs hold of your psyche without mercy.
Once again, Wol-vriey has given us a novel of flowing horror woven from vivid characters and frightening evils. The subject matter and politely graphic presentation put this in the realm of extreme horror. It is not for the easily offended or disturbed. This shelf-worthy, compelling tale is for the daring reader who appreciates the pushing of boundaries in horror literature.
I find it difficult to properly review Mr. Ugly without spoilers; and I abhor spoilers. The back stories and subplots are integrated flawlessly and did not disrupt the flow of the story for me at all. The characters are entertaining and believable. The evil is plausibly presented and mercilessly wraps itself around your mind. While there were a few places where the wording may have been more formal than I would find necessary, that is to be ignored as cultural. It does not affect the story, just my OCD.
I highly recommend Mr. Ugly. The title is an oversimplification of the story within.
Well Wol-vriey has done it again and it is pure awesomeness. We are back to the stomping grounds and small town of Raynham. But don’t let that word small fool you. Raynham has an over abundance of nightmares to go around. This book is an awesome ride. You have twists and turns you never see coming. Sully and Apache are great characters and pretty good cops. Them having to work with black magic, a zombie, monsters, and a hell of a Terrorist Sorceress Mom, they handle things head-on. Their partnership is tight and very amusing. There is some really fantastic dialogue between these characters. Plus the veteran police officers know small town attitudes gets so deep into gossip, they miss what is real with deadly consequences. There is an excellent background story for all the characters. You get the full scope of their lives, and why it’s great and why it sucks living in a small town, everyone knowns everyone, and everything about each other, but rumors kill the good in small towns this one particularly. Some very spooky things happen in this book, some pretty grotesque things too. Be ready for a couple stomach turning chapters. One of the best court room incident I’ve ever read is in this book. Just wait till you get to it, creepy, bloody, disgusting, disturbing, and awesome. Judge Judy in hell. The writing is awesome, this sentence is one example, “Panic filled her. Its black rose blossomed in her belly and spread petals of terror through her heart and lungs.” The cover art is amazing. It is the exact description that the people of the town come to fear and hate.
This book invites us to Raynham, a typical small town, where most people are likely to know each other or are even related.
Malicia Howards returns home after 15 years in a mental health asylum (something really bad happened back then, which made it obviously necessary for the authorities to lock the mentally sane woman away). Now Malicia wants revenge for the lost years and what happened to her son Peter 15 years ago. As this is a horror novel, she uses darkest magic to reach her goal.
Soon, random people from Rayham get slaughtered in the cruelest manner by a killer who seems to be a rotting corpse (therefore his nickname "Mr. Ugly) Of course the police has to investigate: Detective "Sully" Sullivan and his much older, father-like partner "Apache" are on the case. Which is quite difficult – because (unlike Apache) Sully doesn't believe in the supernatural. Not yet...
***What I think about it***
This is a genuine horror novel (not one of this hardly disguised romantic books, which are so popular nowadays) and it's really very entertaining.
I like Wol-Vriey's style of writing. (He's got definitely his own style.) His choice of words isn't the most sophisticated, but "Mr. Ugly" isn't meant to be the favourite of book critics, it's for entertainment.
"Mr. Ugly" is absolutely a book for adults as there's a lot of blood and gore. There is also some sexual contant, especially Sully seems to be quite needy. (I'm okay with that – it's not that disgusting stuff that Ed Lee enjoys to write.) Although it's a serious and scary horror novel, there's also a bit of dark humor, which I appreciated.
So I'm glad that I received a copy of this e-book for review, because that tacky cover wouldn't have made me interested. I recommend this book to horror fans who haven't yet enough of zombies and dark magic :-D
Before I even started this book, I wanted to read more by the author. With titles like Meat Suitcase, Vegan Vampire Vaginas, and Brainchew, it was obvious this was going to be a fun one!
Malicia Howard returns home after 15 years in the Taunton State Mental Hospital. It's not that Malicia was crazy, it's just that everyone believed she was a witch. And while she wasn't one before the murder of her son, those circumstances combined with her late husband's vast library on the occult forced her hand. Nearly immediately upon arriving home from the hospital, Malicia prepares for and casts a spell for revenge not only on the guilty, but on the entire town. With that spell, Mr. Ugly is released on Raynham.
In the meantime, the police are trying to figure out what the heck is going on in their little town. Apparently, summer is a wild time. Always lots of death. Unbeknownst to Apache and his partner, Sully, the town is built on of the gateways linking Earth to Hell. As if things weren’t bad enough! After Mr. Ugly rips apart several young townsfolk, Apache and Sully get a clue, but not what they were expecting. The DNA shows that Malicia’s long-dead son, Peter Howard, is killing people. Which is rather impossible as not only as he is dead, but he was also cremated… It’s up to Apache and Sully to get to the bottom of the mystery and stop Malicia before things get worse.
This was a gruesome little book. There isn’t a simple kill in it. Mr. Ugly doesn’t just murder, he obliterates. And it doesn’t matter if you hide, lock your doors, and arm yourself. If he decides he wants you, you’re done for. Really enjoyed this one!
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. This is it!
A Lovecraftian slasher with a many tentacled bite. Filled with gory acts of revenge, a good dose of sex, and hungry tentacled monsters from the Abyss, Mr. Ugly is a perfectly balanced horror tale. Wol-Vriey has created a villain that's a great mix of sympathetic victim turned vengeful monster, whose simmering hatred for the town that scorned her will not be denied. Flawed detectives following one gory death scene after another, with a Mulder/Scully type partnership, lend a splash of realism into the fantastic on their collision course with the horror that is Mr. Ugly. As my first foray into the writing of Wol-Vriey, I have immediately become a fan and can't wait to peek into his twisted mind once more. Mr. Ugly need to be on any horror fan's reading list.
At the risk of sounding slightly off balance here, for some reason new releases by Wol-vriey always seems to come out just when I need them to. When I need a damn good book just to take my mind off things. (This time around its coming to terms with our 13 year old Boxer having brain cancer. ) Don't worry. I know its completely coincidental but I'm grateful. Wol-vriey will always be an author I one click as soon as I see a new title. I started this one on a day trip to a doctors appointment. The least I could do was keep my husband entertained since he was kind enough to give up his day to come with on the long drive. He was hooked and insisted I finish reading out loud once we got back.
