Margaret Edith Newman was born on 21 June 1926 in Harrow, Middlesex, London, England, UK, the eldest daughter of Marjory Edith (Donald), a former teacher, and Bernard Newman, author of fiction and non-fiction books and considered an authority on spies. She had two sisters, Hilary (Mrs. Richard Hipkin) and Lauriston (Mrs. Malcolm Norris). She was educated at Harrow County School for Girls, from 1937 to 1944; and studied her Major scholar at St Hugh's College, Oxford form 1944 to 1947, she aslo earned her B.A. in 1947 and her M.A. in 1952. On 11 February 1950, she married (Ronald) Jeremy Potter, a publisher and later also published writer of mystery novels. They had a daughter, Jocelyn, and a son, Jonathan.
Before writing, she worked in various jobs, as teacher in Egypt and England, from 1947 to 1950; as editor at King's Messenger children's magazine in London, from 1950 to 1955; and as adviser at Citizen's Advice Bureau in Twickenham, Middlesex, from 1962 to 1970.
On 1959, she published her first mystery novel, Murder to Music as Margaret Newman. Her next novels were published under the pseudonym of Anne Betteridge, a tribute to her father's pseudonym Don Betteridge. Under her married name, Margaret Potter, she published Children's fiction. Under the pseudonym Anne Melville, she signed her historical novels since 1977. As Margaret Evans, she published two historical novels. She continued publishing until her death.
Widow since 15 November 1997, she died less than a year later on 26 August 1998 in Oxford, Oxfordshire.

Der Auftakt der Reihe um die Handelsfamilie Lorimer im Allgemeinen und Margaret Lorimer im Besonderen hat mir gut gefallen. Die Sprache ist eine etwas ältere, wie ich vermute, denn ich bin bei manchen zusammengesetzten Verben gestolpert und aus der Geschichte gepurzelt, nicht sicher, ob man so im Viktorianischen England (1:1 übersetzt) gesprochen hat oder ein Übersetzungsfehler vorliegt. Ich tendiere zu ersterem. Allerdings wurde das Verb “wiedersehen” grundsätzlich groß geschrieben. Ich nehme hier an, dass eine Autokorrektur für ein substantiviertes Verb gleich für alle diese Verben verwendet wurde. Auch das hat den Lesefluss etwas gestört.
Ansonsten hat das Buch einen leichten Spannungsbogen, der auch bis zum Ende gehalten wurde. Natürlich gibt es bei über 500 Seiten auch einige Längen, aber da mich die Geschichte und der Werdegang Margarets interessiert, konnte ich mich damit abfinden.
Sehr interessant und spannend ist der Umstand, dass es im 19. JH keineswegs normal war, dass eine alleinstehende Frau aus gutem Hause etwas anderes als Gouvernante werden konnte. Allein in London gab es die Möglichkeit, sich zur Ärztin ausbilden zu lassen. Strenge Regeln wurden den jungen Damen auferlegt, einige Praktika waren zu absolvieren, aber Margaret ist es gelungen, Ärztin zu werden. Danach jedoch auch eine Anstellung zu finden in einer Gesellschaft, in der man keine Frauen in derartigen Positionen erwartete oder wünschte, war alles andere als einfach.
Ebenso interessant war das Umgarnen, das langsame Annähern beider Geschlechter. Damals wäre niemand auf die Idee gekommen, direkt um ein Date zu bitten, zumal immer eine Anstandsdame dabei zu sein hatte. Margaret hat sich in diesem ersten Band zweimal verliebt, ihre Liebe wurde auch erwidert, und dennoch schien sie das Pech anzuziehen, denn letzten Endes war sie (wieder) auf sich allein gestellt. – Eine starke Frau, eine starke Persönlichkeit und nahezu eine Heldin ihrer Zeit.
Ich gebe eine Leseempfehlung und 08/10 Punkte.

The Lorimer Line by Anne Melville is the first of six Lorimer novels by Anne Melville, a pseudonym for Margaret Potter (other pseudonyms are Ann Betteridge and Margaret Evans.) Her father was novelist Bernard Newman, whose best-known book was Spy, published in 1935.
Melville (who was George Eliot's great-grandniece) wrote 55 novels, some of them mysteries and some of them for children. Originally published between 1977 and 1984 the Lorimer books are a family saga beginning in the early 19th century. They have recently been republished by Bloomsbury Reader, in paperback and e-book formats. The Kindle editions are less than $10.

a sweeping saga, trite and somewhat boring.
This story did not hold my attention, it is more about how the very wealthy can get away with a lot of things us normal people would consider immoral, unethical and downright wrong. Courage is shown, but I felt it just too boring. A saga tends to leave out much information, making sweeping statements as you will find if you contemplate reading this.

At times moved slow and seemed overly descriptive. It is also a cliffhanger. That should be noted before purchasing as it was long enough to get through and be disappointed the story of the heroine is to be continued

Die Lorimers sind eine Bankiers- und Handelsfamilie im englischen viktorianischen Bristol. Den Grundstock zum Reichtum legte einst der erste der Lorimers mit dem Sklavenhandel in Jamaika, und nun ist John Junius Lorimer auf der Höhe der Macht angekommen. Unerbittlich und strategisch gewandt ist sein Ziel das Mehren von Reichtum, Macht und ansehen. Aber auf hohen Aufstieg folgt auch ein tiefer Fall, und ein Schiffsunglück zieht den Untergang der Bank nach sich - das Rad der Fortuna wendet sich. Im Fokus des Romans steht aber das Schicksal von John Junius Tochter Margaret, die ein eigenständiges Leben führen will, und als eine der ersten Frauen in London Medizin studiert und Ärztin wird. Sie rebelliert gegen gesellschaftliche Normen, und gegen ihre Familie, und muss herausfinden, dass sie schon immer nur eine Schachfigur auf dem Spielbrett ihres Vaters war.
Der Roman wird teilweise in grossem Zeitraffer und aus einer übergeordneten Perspektive erzählt, sodass es möglich ist, mehrere Generationen Familiengeschichte auf wenigen Seiten zusammenfassend darzustellen, und wechselt dann aber auch wieder in normales Tempo, und der Leser ist wieder ganz bei Margaret, ihren Brüdern, ihrer Arbeit und natürlich, der Liebe. Ich fand das ganz geschickt gelöst, sodass immer wieder zwischendurch Familienhistorie eingeschoben wurde, aber der Erzählfluss trotzdem erhalten blieb.
Interessant war auch, die wirtschaftlichen Zusammenhänge, die zur Bankeninsolvenz führten, von Margarets Verlobtem erklärt zu bekommen: auch hier geschickt gelöst, wie ein Buchhalter Margarets eine Finanzkrise erklärt, sodass auch der Leser noch etwas dabei lernen konnte. Also. definitiv ein Bonuspunkt für gute Recherche!
Das Buch las sich sehr flüssig, aber ich muss gestehen, die Figuren haben mich nicht so wirklich mitgerissen. Ich mochte Margaret, aber so richtig mitgefiebert habe ich auch nicht. Ich kann es jetzt leider auch nicht an etwas konkretem festmachen, es war ein gut geschriebener Roman, aber für mich nicht so mit Wow-Effekt. Vielleicht einen Tick zu unromantisch, zu realistisch.....ich weiss, das ist jetzt ein sehr schwammiger Kritikpunkt, aber es hat mich halt einfach nicht wirklich in fremde Welten gezogen, dieses Buch. Achtung, Spoiler. Als durch Komplotte Margarets Verlobter über Nacht das Land verlassen muss, habe ich ständig erwartet, er muss doch irgendwann mal wieder auftauchen (hier spricht die Romantikerin), aber das passierte dann nicht, bzw. wurde verhindert, und damit hatte es sich. Wie im echten Leben halt. Aber ich mag in Büchern gern einen Ticken mehr rosarote Brille. Nun ja, meine persönliche Empfindung. Für alle Fans realistischer historischer Romane ohne Zuviel Kitsch und Romance aber eine Leseempfehlung!

Ich bin ein großer Fan von historischen Romanen und habe mich deshalb für dieses Buch entschieden. Ich kann es all jenen ans Herz legen, die Geschichten über Familien, Intrigen, Sturz und Fall lieben. Das Buch ist wunderbar flüssig geschrieben und auch sehr lang doch dies tut der Geschichte überhaupt keinen Abbruch. Gekonnt vermag es die Autorin, eine liebevolle aber auch ernsthafte Geschichte in ein Gesamtpaket zu verpacken. Es geht um die Schicksale einer sehr reichen Familie und die Zukunft der drei Kinder. Zu spät erkennen alle drei, dass sie eigentlich Figuren im Spiel ihres Vaters waren. Diese Entwicklung ändert die Zukunft der Kinder drastisch und es bleibt spannend bis zum Schluss.
Auch die Wortwahl hat mich begeistert. Diese passt zum Ende des 18.Jhd. und gibt der Geschichte den runden Touch. Ich freue mich auf Band 2!

Da es der erste Band ist, hat man erst einmal viel Erzählung drumherum, bevor die Geschichte Fahrt aufnimmt. Der Schreibstil der Autorin ist aber gut lesbar und so wird es nicht langweilig, auch wenn ich mir eine Raffung in der Erzählung um John Junius gewünscht hätte.
Insgesamt zeichnet die Autorin ein sehr detailreiches Bild über das Leben und Streben in der viktorianischen Zeit. Ebenso beschreibt sie plastisch, wie nah Höhenflüge und Absturz beieinander liegen können und dass jeder für begangene Fehler wird zahlen müssen. Die Figuren haben Ecken und Kanten, was der Geschichte mehr Glaubhaftigkeit und Tiefe verleiht. Mir hat das Buch gut gefallen und ich freue mich auf die nächsten Bände.

I love sagas: The Forsyth Saga, original Upstairs Downstairs, a Woman of Substance et.al.. This book introduces us to the Lorimers, one of the richesy familues in Bristol England. The series was originally written in the 70s and reissued as ebooks a few years ago. I got them after reading a post on a blog I follow.
We meet the patriarch of the family:John Junis, and his children:Wiliam, Margaret and Ralph. However, a lot of this book is through the eyes of Margaret. It shows the beliefs and mores of Great Britan of the 1800s, and is greatly inhanced by the hstorical context, almost as if that is a character as well.
