I bought this book during the Book Expo in Outlets Store Lipa. I've met the author and have it signed. I hesitated a lot on purchasing this book because it is out of budget I usually buy second hand books. My wife just pushed me on buying this book because it's a great opportunity to meet the author of the book (not common for me) and I thank God I bought it.
This book is the first installment of the book trilogy Breaking the Scroll. I just want to try it out first and the only regret I have now is I should have bought the whole set (or maybe there will be a hardbound edition that will come out soon. I hope so :)
The main protagonist of the book is Kino, a boy who has no power in a world where everyone has their own special power. Yup, like My Hero Academia (and my wife said, just like Encanto the Movie.... We don't talk about Brunoooo.... lol). Kino wants to have power/ability just to belong, because to be listed as a citizen of the land, you should present your power to the emperor when you come to an age. The story is not that unique but still the flow is great. That made it hard for me to put down/stop reading. Each chapter is a point of view of different characters in the book but still the flow is great. The book ended in a cliff hanger so buying the next book is a must. There are also characters that are introduced late so it is really pushing you to purchase the next installment.
In my opinion, the only issue about this book is the cover, it may be better to have an illustrated cover rather than pictures. The quality of the paper is different but still okay.
Fav Lines: Love could blossom out of respect. Sometimes, we tend to love the ones we could never have. Love waits for those who never falter.
I started reading so excited to learn about the world of Akea, but it did not capture my heart after the first third of the book. I really tried to love this, but for some reason, I didn’t.
We get to learn a lot of characters and their backstories throughout the book, and that’s really nice, what I find hard to read though is that some chapters are quite longer than it needs to be, and some scenes are dragging too much.
We get to learn the motivation, and the reason why the characters are what they are. The characters are well written, my faves are Mayo and Doggan, they make me laugh while reading, and I like that.
The pacing is a bit of a struggle for me, some parts like I’ve said is longer than it needs to be. Some chapters are so long that I felt like I was just pushing myself just to get done with it, and I don’t like that feeling, coz I want to enjoy what I’m reading.
Though I understood that this is a trilogy, and that the first book is gonna be the introduction of characters and setting up the main plot, but still, did not quite grasp my attention. I think it was because of how it was written, it’s too deep that it’s sometimes tiring to read.
Towards the end is when everything picked up, the last 50 pages of the book is where the action was. I wanted to talk about the plot, but I don’t want to spoil it to you. But note that there are children who dies in this story, which made me VERY uncomfortable. (I really HATE it when children dies on tv or movies, which is why I hate horror movies with children in it).
Overall, the book made me put it down many times, and almost did not went back to read it again, but I’m glad I did, coz the story (especially towards the end) is good and intriguing. I will definitely read the rest of the series, but will have to pause it for now, and read other lighthearted ones.
First time to read YA now that I am a mom. Reading through the mishaps and adventures bring about a different kind of excitement and sadness from a mother's perspective.
