4.5 stars!

So I am a huge fan of anything Jennifer Armentrout writes. I’ve read all but one of her books, and the lowest I’ve rated her books was a 3 (and that was the Gamble brother’s series which isn’t her best). That’s 20+ books I’ve loved by her so I am not being modest when I say I might be a little biased when it comes to her work, because it just works for me.

Andrea and Tanner do not get along. Most of the time they are trading barbs and insults with each other until the other one gets pissed off and walks away. But when their friends Kyler and Sydney invite them to stay at a cabin in West Virginia for a week in the summer, neither one of them can pass up the opportunity for a getaway. While there it’s obvious that this has been a setup by the happy couple to get Andrea and Tanner alone together, but the most surprising thing is how they end up getting along and enjoying their time together.

But Andrea has issues that stand in the way of anything becoming real between the two of them, and this week will either help her, or cause her to spiral out of control.

 photo pagebreak.png

This story focused on an issue we don’t always see in the new adult genre: drinking. I felt the author did an incredible job with writing the issue at hand and I never once felt like it was exaggerated or blown out of proportion. Andrea wasn’t an alcoholic by traditional terms, but she could never have just one drink. And her drinking was very much to cover up internal issues that she didn’t know how to deal with. There were so many moments in this book where tears would start streaming down my face, hearing Andrea’s inner turmoil and her motivations behind her actions. She’s a character I won’t be forgetting anytime soon.

I will say my only criticisms were the first 52% of the book or so was a 3.5 rating for me, but the last half of the book the author really pulled out the emotional punches and yanked up the rating for me. I also wasn’t entirely convinced by the romance between Tanner and Andrea. I saw the attraction, but a part of me thinks Tanner is just too good to be true. Like Andrea made him up to deal with her issues.

So for me this story was about the heroine’s journey to healing herself and I thought that part of it as beautiful. And I loved the small shout out in the beginning to the Lux series. It was cute!

Me he ido enamorando junto a ellos.

This was a lovely read, but unfortunately didn’t impress me too much. Needless to say I won’t remember anything about it next month. I’ve had high expectations for this one since I’m familiar with this author’s style, which I enjoy and especially since it has one of my favorite tropes – enemies to lovers. "Scorched” is the second installment in “Frigid” series, but it can be read as a standalone.

Andrea has some problems she tries to deal with. Recently she changed her major from Pre-med to Education, she feels pressured to fallow her parents’ footsteps and on top of that she has anxiety attacks and some drinking problems. She drinks until she can’t feel anymore, she drinks to forget and no one – her family or her friends – knows how serious her problem is. Andrea’s best friend, Sydney is the only one who knows about her anxiety attacks. She also worries about her drinking problem, she wants to help her friend and she wants her to admit that she has a serious problem.

Tanner is Kyler’s (who is Sydney’s boyfriend) best friend. He’s getting ready to go into academy to become a police office. Until then he’s a volunteer firefighter.

Andrea had a huge crush on Tanner since her freshman year of college, but Tanner never knew. Now, their situation between them is tense every time they see each other. They don’t get along too well. They fight like cats and dogs and with every occasion they insult each other. Andrea knows for sure Tanner is a man-whore and she thinks for sure he can’t change. Tanner is convinced Andrea is a spoiled girl since her family is loaded. Their friends invite both of them to a cabin for a week and there they start to realize they misjudged each other and they actually can be friends. But what will happen when they start to want more? Will Andrea’s issues stand in the way? Will Tanner be there for her?

description

The story was sexy and funny, but it also was emotional. The subject matter here – drinking and depression + anxiety attacks is sensible and for the most part the author did a great job with it so the story was realistic and believable.

For some reason I enjoyed more the first half of the story. I would have preferred the entire story to be that way. Anyway...I liked both main characters. Andrea is troubled and I have to say I really felt for her. She is smart, sweet, kind, funny and she wants to help others. Tanner was pretty perfect IMO. I never felt he was an a**hole with Andrea. He never exaggerated. I would have liked his character to be as developed as Andrea’s. I really wanted to know more about him. He’s kind, considerate, supportive and patient and I liked the way he is with Andrea after he realizes he feels more for her. He almost made me swoon. The bickering between them in the first half of the story was very enjoyable and well done. They made me smile and grin more times than I can count. I also loved their interactions from the moment they hook up. I really felt their connection, but I can’t say the same about the romantic relationship between them. I didn’t feel their love at all. They fell for each other way too fast for my liking.

Overall, a good read!

Reading romance books lately has reminded me a lot of mushrooms. There is nothing worse than realizing the hard way that the delicious dinner you ordered has mushrooms in it. You want to enjoy the creamy pasta, but you're too busy picking out disgusting pieces of fungus to fully enjoy it.

(Sorry, that probably only makes sense to me.)

I actually thought this was a pretty good book overall. JLA has a fun sense of humor, and I enjoyed a lot of the banter between these characters. Tanner and Andrea have kind of a love/hate relationship and start out spending most of their time relentlessly teasing each other. There were times I thought they were pretty funny and times where it was a little immature...I'm definitely feeling my age when I read books in this genre.

The best part of the book for me was Andrea's character. I was impressed by how realistic and believable it was. JLA delivered on what the blurb implied and wrote a character who is spiraling out of control. Andrea is a complicated person. She is struggling with depression/anxiety and feels like she needs a pill for everything. It was sad to read about what was going on in her head, and she actually reminds me of someone I know in real life. On top of these very real issues, Andrea has a drinking problem. She has a problem with stopping once she starts, and ends up making bad decisions when she is drunk. The book was more about Andrea's problem and recovery than it was a romance to be honest. The good thing is that for a romance novel, I felt like it was handled well, and felt authentic.

The mushrooms....

Is it me, or is JLA getting more and more ridiculous when it comes to constantly repeating physical descriptions? I am way too lazy to go back through this book to prove my point, but trust me...Andrea has curly red hair and big boobs. Tanner has eyes the color of the sky, and a really hot body. blah blah blah.

The sex scenes were well written, BUT, I can't read the sentence "She is hot, wet and tight" anymore. Seriously. I expect better from a seasoned author.

Overall, I would recommend this book to JLA's contemporary romance fans. If you liked the first in this series, or the Wait for You series, I think you would like this too. My opinion is that she writes better paranormal romance than contemporary.

3 Don't Call Me Andy Stars!
 photo D56F8CDF-BEF3-4090-88F1-0E15B30EEFAE.jpg

This one started off really good. Enemies to lovers. Of course I was loving it! It's one of my favorite things to read about. lol But some where around 60% it started slowly going down the hill for me:((
Andrea has just changed her major from Pre-Med to Education. She no longer wants to follow in her parents foot steps. Her parents are not happy with this.
She's had a major crush on Tanner since her freshman year of college until something happens and she starts to think of him differently.
A few years later and Andrea has no choice but to see Tanner all the time...unless she doesn't want to see her best friend.
Tanner is a volunteer firefighter. He's also getting ready to go into the academy to be a police officer. He's also a player.
Andrea and Tanner met through their best friends a few years ago. They are both always bickering back and forth with each other. They cracked me up!!

Andrea drinks a lot. She usually gets plastered and needs tending to afterwards. Tanner is the first to keep calling her out on what a mess she is. He also thinks she's spoiled and doesn't do anything but party and shop. Then one night at a club Tanner starts to see Andrea differently.
He has to take drunk Andrea home.

“You also sort of invited me back to your bed.” “What?” I nearly shrieked. “How does one ‘sort of’ invite someone to their bed?” “Oh, trust me, you can sort of do it. You did.” He leaned forward, looking up at me. “Honestly, if you’d been able to walk a straight line and knew what you were doing, I’d have been all kinds of down for that.”

You know how honest you are when you're drunk. lol

They all decide to go to a cabin for a week. Tanner is seeing Andrea very different. Andrea is trying to figure out what the hell is wrong with him.
“Let’s make a bet, Andy.” “Stop calling me that,” I ordered, but hated— absolutely loathed— the breathlessness of my voice. I wanted to punch it out of my chest. Or him. Yeah, punching him would be better. “And I’m not making any bets with you.” I walked around him, stomping on the gravel with my sandaled feet. I’d taken a few steps when he said, “That’s because you know you’ll lose.”

During the time at the cabin Tanner and Andrea form a friendship that leads to something else that neither of them are sure about.
This is where it starts going down hill for me. I felt that Tanner was constantly saying he was sorry to Andrea. Ugh! I don't know. I was just not feeling these two.
I didn't really understand why Andrea had the issues she did.
Then of course something happens in the end that I felt was kind of OTT. lol
Over all this was just a I Liked It read for me.
I still love JA's books! Can't wait for more:))

Sexy, moving and compulsively readable. A story about friendship, love and redemption.

[4.5 stars]

Jennifer L. Armentrout’s latest novel packs all the feels in just the right amounts. There’s sexiness and steam. There’s wit and banter. And there’s a whole lot of unexpected emotion as our female protagonist, Andrea, struggles to stop her life from spiraling… from being consumed by her insecurities and past transgressions. This is a story with an enemies to lovers feel, which makes the chemistry between Andrea and Tanner all the sweeter.

“You excel at distracting me and driving me crazy.”

For years they had an epic love/hate relationship, compelled by equal parts desire and misunderstandings. But in the spirit of Frigid, it isn’t until they spend time together in a cabin, that they really get to know each other, good and bad.

Andrea had always felt something for Tanner, but she thought wasn’t the kind of girl he would notice. Every time they were around each other, hurtful words were slung, despite there being a sense of something more behind that verbal warfare. And as Tanner would discover, it’s what hid beneath and deep inside of Andrea, that compelled her to act a certain way.

“With Andrea, I never really knew where I stood with her. One minute, she was sweet as sugar to me, the next she had a bite more venomous than a copperhead.”

But when they’re forced to talk… really talk… they both realize there’s so much more to each other, and the connection they’ve felt fiercely sparks to life. Andrea never expected to feel so cared for with Tanner and she realizes she wants to experience more than drunken one-night stands with guys she can’t even remember. She wants the real thing, but is Tanner real? Or is he just playing her in the most convincing way?

“For once, I wanted to be… I wanted to be something more than just a hookup. I wanted to be… worth more.”

Andrea and Tanner’s budding relationship comes crashing down before too long, however, in a fury of confusion, hurt, bad decisions and irreversible choices.

Not only do we experience Andrea and Tanner’s tumultuous tryst, but we also see Kyler and Syd again, experiencing some of their perspective as friends of our troubled duo. I devoured the novel—it’s a very quick read, but one woven with a powerful and important message. I think loyal readers of Jennifer’s books will love it, but also be surprised by the emotions evoked by the story’s end.

What a journey! It's true that things felt a little rushed at times, but I truly enjoyed Andrea's story. I especially liked the way she finally stood up for herself, giving us all a lesson that sometimes we do need help and we should not deny it. This book is totally recommended 🤗

Más bien un 4’5.
Pffff, me ha enamorado esta historia. Demasiado.

Entretenida, divertida, caliente, emotiva... Distendida para desconectar y enamorarse con ellos.

How gorgeous is this cover?

This eagerly anticipated companion to FRIGID does not disappoint!

Once again Jennifer L. Armentrout delivers a poignant story about life, love and friendship, infused with her signature humor, wit and swoon. Andrea's journey is not an easy one, but she's the kind of character you want to champion and see succeed.

And then there is Tanner. Excuse me while I go set fire to something... Just kidding! But seriously, Tanner was awesome. Strong, supportive and exactly what Andrea needed in her life. Sydney too. We all need friends who aren't afraid to tell it like it is.

Read it.

Like all of Jennifer Armentrout's books, you can expect a fun and down to earth chick, a sexy as sin love interest, and a romance that will melt your heart and heat your cheeks. I was very happy to get Tanner and Andrea's story, after first meeting them in Frigid a couple of years ago. They have quite the dynamic, since they are constantly at each other's throats, but there's an attraction, too, that has been steadily building. Sometimes antagonistic romances don't work for me, but I had a very enjoyable time seeing Tanner and Andrea turn things around. Tanner is especially my kind of guy, since he pursues her wholeheartedly and knows all the right things to say. Andrea I liked very much too; she had a depth to her I wasn't expecting, and I'm glad Jennifer wrote her character in a way that's not often portrayed in NA. Her struggles with depression and alcoholism felt real, and my heart broke for her. There was one part that made me extremely mad, but afterwards it's handled well and ultimately I was satisfied with its conclusion. I highly recommend Scorched if you're looking for a hot romance with low level angst and a healthy discussion of what will be a sensitive subject for most people.

***I was lucky enough to snag an ARC of this book at BEA, but this did not affect my review in any way!***

Like I always say after finishing a JLA book.... JLA has done it again!!! But this book I feel is different from her other ones, it really makes you think and it is such an important story that I think we can all get something from, realizing we all have our demons that we need to overcome and push through so we can get to that light at the end of the tunnel that has so much happiness to offer. Find those people in your life that will always be there for you no matter how badly you screw up and be careful of how you treat another person, you have no idea what they may be going through and like it was mentioned in the book the people with the biggest smile and the loudest laugh are usually the ones who are trying to cover something, who are trying to stay strong. Instead of pushing someone down for their mistakes, help them get up, dust themselves off, and try again. I'm sure we all have something that we would like to fix/change and how can we expect help from others if we're always pushing others down. This world could use a lot less hate and a lot more love.<3

Original review from my blog Julalicious Book Paradise

I won't lie. My rating throughout the book went between 3.5 and 4, but I settled on 4.

I was really happy to hear that we would get a book for Andrea and Tanner, but I was sort of disappointed from time to time with it.

The sexual chemistry is completely there; no doubt about it, but I felt like I couldn't connect them together as much when they were acting all cute and sweet with one another. I really wanted to after I fell for Syd and Kyler in Frigid, I really wanted to feel the same about these two.

Andrea's character was interesting, but I felt so confused with all of her feelings going in every direction that I couldn't focus on trying to connect with her; to get her. Towards the end, it got better, but I still wished that we had more to read about her during the last part of the book. I wanted to know more than just what generally happened during that time. I wanted to really see Andrea work through it all.

Tanner reminded me a lot of Kyler because both are seen as players in the books when in reality, they hadn't done anything with girls for a while. But Tanner seemed too good to be true. I know books are mostly to make us dream, but I thought he was taking things too easily or maybe I had just about enough of book guys lately who are just too good to be true and it ended up on him to get slightly on my nerves.

In the book, Andrea mentions from time to time something that happened in her freshman year that involved Tanner and her roommate and I couldn't understand why she would sometimes get mad at him for that. He didn't know her back then and wasn't aware of her feelings and I feel like she was maybe doing that because it made it easier to push him away, but still, I felt like her anger for that was misplaced.

Overall, this book was good, but I feel there could have been more told and I wish that I really connected with the two characters because they were interesting, but they didn't hold my attention like I thought they would before I started this book.

But I will say this: Jennifer's writing always keeps me captivate even if I don't always fall for the characters. I really love how easy you can get addicted to her writing, but even if this book gave me mixed feelings about it, I would still recommend it.
