In olden times when men loved each other, there was nothing to break that bond…except a curse. Cassius McClure betrays a tyrannical king and gives a blood oath to his lover, Hector Minwater. Together they overthrow a kingdom but a curse of the forest may just be their undoing.
I'm obsessed with writing MM romance, especially paranormal. I'm inclined to write of werewolves, vampires, warlocks, ghosts, demons, and all sorts of monsters with passion. If you're looking for a steamy romance in a thin fantasy shell, you'll need to look elsewhere. If you're looking for a fantasy novel that includes romance and a bit of sex, you might have found it in The Blood Oath. Be forewarned, though, that there is a healthy dose of angst that comes along with the developing romance.
In Hector and Cassius - our protagonists - readers are introduced to characters who play larger than life roles in the history of their world and could have fantastical tales told about them. Rather than tell those stories, however, Primrose chooses to illuminate the interior lives and everyday worries of this pair with a narrative that focuses a lot on introspection and the visceral battle that wages between hearts and minds. This focus on the interior life of both Hector and Cassius led to fairly well-developed characters and the ability to feel the highs and lows along with them. It was something that I really enjoyed, although it also threw me on the emotional roller coaster right along with them.
The story of The Blood Oath covers a timescale that could be well suited to an epic fantasy, but its length precludes it from developing into such a sweeping tale. As with the only other book I’ve read by Primrose thus far - The World Before - I thoroughly enjoyed the world that was being built. I was swept up into a wondrous and strange, yet somehow familiar, universe that held my attention. I loved the way that magic and myth were woven into the narrative. My complaint is the same now as it was then: I want more.
Ultimately The Blood Oath is an enjoyable - although short - read that will sweep you up in the lives and love of larger-than-life characters. I would recommend it for any fan of fantasy novels that also enjoy exploring the internal conflict caused by romance along the way. I would also recommend that Ella Primrose start writing longer books, or books in series; I need more of these worlds.
