Seventeen-year-old Falon still can’t believe that she’s living in a foster home and being treated like a maid by a beast of a woman and her two spoiled, teenaged children. Her one glimmer of light in her gloomy existence is a wise beyond his years five-year-old foster named Jackson who also lives with them. Falon longs for the day her mom gets better so she can leave, take Jackson with her and begin a new life. One of the best books I've read this year!!

I got this book for my kid to read, because it was free on Amazon. He doesn't really like to read, but he's really good at it. Go figure. He started reading and said it wasn't interesting, which really surprised me, because I thought it sounded really good. Planning to show him it was actually a good book, I started reading it to him. We ended up reading the entire book together. I am so glad I started reading it, because it was amazing!! I didn't want to put it down. It was an original story and the characters were awesome. The author did a wonderful job of making us dislike the villains and love the "good guys". The ending was literally perfect! I do wish there were more books set in this world though. This book will definitely leave me with the "sad" feeling you feel when you finish a really good book and you have to return to the real world.

We meet 17-year old Falon at a foster home. Her father is dead and her mother is in a nursing home after an auto accident. So presumably, she won't be forever at Ms. Alice's mercy. Jackson is five and he lives there too. Falon looks after him because no one else will. Then Ty comes to live with them because his mother and brother have disappeared, mysteriously.
As you begin to read the story, you settle in to a contemporary teenage scene. However it doesn't take long for the story to warp into a fascinating fantasy. I like the author's plot swings and twists. You don't see them coming unless you pay very close attention to little hints along the way. I love the way the story plays out. Great job Laurel!

Suuuuuuccccchhhhhh a Great feel good story!!

Wonderful characters, rich fantasy and mean tho not too descriptive villans.
There is nothing I love more than a sweet Happy Ever After story. The tree portal is a quirky touch that has my imagination whirling!! ( Why oh why can't I have a beautiful garden in my backyard that features a hollowed out free with a door to another realm within???)
I have to admit this has been one of my favorite type of fairytales since I was old enough to read many years ago.
Very enjoyable ☺

Just wow! I wasn't sure about this as I started reading, but in the end I am glad I stayed with this book - I was routing for the fosters.

When a book comes along with foster children in it, I tend to read it - I was a foster parent for a few years and I have seen the struggles. My heart broke for them and then kept breaking before it healed and they became whole.

The magic, the deceit, the betrayal, the love, the happiness - all the feels!

Mesmerizing story

This was stirring and interesting. It kept getting better and better as it progressed. Laurel your attention to fantasy is amazing. You are a exceptional writer. Your characters are special, likeable and interesting. I am amazed at how you kept coming up with new twists. I got to the point where I needed to know what would happen next and so had to finish this amazing story.

Good book

This will be a great adventure/fantasy book for my granddaughter. It was such fun reading it. The characters were well developed and it’s easy to keep with the story throughout. I’m always looking for new books/authors for myself and my family and Laurel Veil is definitely recommended. Thank you Ms. Veil for a great adventure. I look forward to reading your other books.

Good young adult fantasy.

Quick light read. The story flowed well. The characters were very stereo typical., beautiful teen girl discovers she's a long lost princess from another world. She meets handsome young man who wins her heart and helps her find long lost parents.
The more interesting characters were more interesting. Brit is a hardened woman who's good with a bow and well schooled in the art of poisoning.

Why are alternative lands trapped in the time of Robin Hood?
Cute ya story, getting away from abusive foster care system and finding out your father is a king, albeit temporarily dethroned and stored in a dungeon.
And of course the happily ever after ending helps everyone from future hardships.

This book wasn't for me. The characters were fine and the plot was fine. The story is crafted in such a way that it feels like there's no build-up to certain events and little tension. It's at times both a whimsical story, and a story tackling serious issues like parental estrangement and abuses in the foster care system. It excels at times and falls flat at times. It's a quick and easy read.

A fun read with a bit of old tales mixed in with some exciting moments and twists that a younger reader may enjoy.

There were a few spelling errors, but nothing glaring, and some of the scenes were not very well developed. But, overall an enjoyable read.

Quick read

Fairly predictable book. Main character was a bit whiny. Really need more strong female characters that don't rely on a male to rescue them. Story was cute though

Liked their mode of travel! Held my attention more than expected, given it's a YA novel. Nice pleasant read. Sucks you in!
