In a Nutshell: An amazingly creative retelling of ‘Snow-White and the Seven Dwarves’. Combines fairy-tale, historical fiction, fantasy, and futuristic science fiction into a mind-blowing package. Complex plot, layered characters, twisty storytelling, no frivolous romance. The first of a series. No cliffhanger ending. Had a couple of minor issues, but overall, a commendable debut. Much recommended!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Plot Preview:
2069, Scotland ➙ Keltson: A hacker who considers himself a vigilante. Helps clients travel through time with the help of mirrors to “rescue unfortunate souls from the past.”
2069, Russia ➙ Lilia: A Russian engineer working at a junkyard but longing to escape her dreary life. What she wants most is an opportunity to work with the mysterious renegade known simply as ‘The Mirror’ as that’s her only chance to give herself a fresh start.
1530s, Germany ➙ Bianka: A young German countess who is unaware of her doomed destiny. When a mysterious young woman joins her family, her life changes forever.
How do the life paths of these three characters, coming from different places and times, intersect? Read and find out.
The story comes to us from the third-person perspectives of various characters across multiple timelines.
I had purchased the digital edition of this book way back in 2023 because of the promising blurb. Finding the audio review copy offered the perfect opportunity to finally open the genre-bending novel. And what a ride it has been! Possibly the most unusual Snow-White retelling I have ever read!
Bookish Yays:
⏳ The sheer concept of this book! Fairy tale retelling, historical fiction, time travel with science fiction – imagine combining this into a single storyline and even being mostly successful at the endeavour. Unbelievable that plot can be futuristic and historical at once!
⏳ Despite being a retelling, this is barely recognisable as one. The original tale provides just the underlying framework. The content is almost entirely new, with many surprising and shocking twists. I always love retellings that pay an ode to the original and still offer enough novelty.
⏳ That said, the plot contains many subtle parallels with and Easter Eggs from Snow White. You will appreciate the hidden surprises better if you know the original, but this book can be enjoyed even without any prior knowledge of Snow White’s story.
⏳ The restructuring of the identities of some key characters from the fairy tale. Brilliantly done! One of these also offers a convincing villain-origin story.
⏳ The three main characters: layered, flawed, realistic. They generate all kinds of emotions in you, from sympathy to annoyance to frustration.
⏳ Bianka’s story is partly inspired by the real-life story of Margaretha von Waldeck, a 16th century German Countess who is thought to be the inspiration for Snow White. Enjoyed learning this unexpected fact and reading more about her online.
⏳ The world building, though more elaborate in the historical timelines than in the 2069 one, is still praiseworthy. Not easy to write settings that are both realistic and fantastical at once.
⏳ Amazing atmosphere, especially in the darker scenes.
⏳ The original fairy tale has a love story track, so I was prepared for this retelling to have romance. The lack thereof was a wonderful surprise. Most of the plot doesn’t have even a mention of attraction.
⏳ The time travel and its nitty-gritties. While there are always some flaws when it comes to using time travel as a trope, this story keeps the logical loopholes at a tolerable level – a rare achievement for a debut novelist.
⏳ Totally clean in terms of romance as well as violence, even though there are many action scenes. Perfect for the target YA age group.
⏳ Every chapter begins with a little snippet from another source such as personal correspondence or a research report or a journal entry or an interview. This adds a great deal of context to the ongoing main story.
⏳ The epilogue sets the foundation for the next book in the series (Seems to be a ‘Sleeping Beauty’ retelling), but the current story ends with no cliffhangers. I liked the smooth segue from this world to the next.
Bookish Mixed Bags:
❄️ The story drags a little bit in the middle sections. A part of this is because the reader can see what should happen but the characters can’t and they keep taking naïve decisions and making the same mistakes. While there was still enough happening to keep my attention, my mind did wander off at times.
❄️ The final quarter gets much darker and way more complicated than I had anticipated from a retelling. Honestly, I don't think I even understood everything that occurred at the end, but I am not sure if this was because of the somewhat rushed writing in the final section or my affected concentration. (Had I known that the story was so tricky, I’d have reserved this audiobook for a time when my mind was more focussed.) Regardless, I must appreciate the intricate plotting. Everything seemed to fit naturally into place, even if I didn’t comprehend a couple of the developments clearly.
❄️ The story offers an excellent study of human psychology. It highlights, in various ways, how our motivations, our intentions, and our actions shape who we are and what we do. Most of this is well written. However, a few times, a character’s motives aren’t clear or convincing.
🎧 The Audiobook Experience:
The audiobook, clocking at 7 hrs 40 min, is narrated by Rachel White. She does her job excellently. There are many characters from varied ethnic backgrounds, and the narrator does a mostly convincing job of keeping their accents and speaking styles distinct. I am sure this wouldn’t have been an easy task.
I didn’t understand why the prologue was missing from the audiobook. I discovered this only by accident when I opened my digital copy to look up the spellings of the character names. The prologue is an essential part of this story, so it isn't fair to audiobook listeners that their copy begins directly with the first chapter. Other than this, I have no complaints about the audio version. It would be a fabulous way of exploring this story.
Do note that the plot has many days/dates, characters, locations, and timelines. So the audio version is recommendable only to experienced listeners.
All in all, fantasy, retelling, and science fiction are such creative genres that seeing all of them coming together cohesively in a single book was a thrilling experience. Though a few of the writing choices could have worked better for me, I enjoyed this entertaining expedition across places and times. This is not just an indie work but also a debut work. The author deserves special kudos for beginning her writing journey with such an ambitious concept and implementing it quite successfully.
‘Shattered Snow’ is the first book of the Mirror Chronicles (Writing the series name reminds me of Marissa Meyer’s Lunar Chronicles – another scifi + fairy tale series that is on my TBR!), and the remaining books promise to be equally delightful. I can’t wait to give them a go!
Definitely recommended to retelling fans who also enjoy twisty time-travel narratives. As with all fantastical stories, don’t overanalyse; just enjoy the ride.
4.25 stars.
I received a complimentary copy of this audiobook from the author via StoryOrigin. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the audio version.
The digital version of this book is currently available on Kindle Unlimited.
“What If Snow White’s coffin was a capsule that froze time?”
The question hit me as I cleaned a mirror in my home. It sent me running to my keyboard. 30 days later, I had a completed draft.
Time travel is a perfect ingredient for the Snow White fairy tale... and plenty others for that matter.
This retelling is based on the real-life history of Margaretha von Waldeck, a 16th century German Countess who is thought to be the inspiration for Snow White. I loved researching the time period, the castle she grew up in, the events in her life, and the Grimm brothers rendition of this story.
I hope you enjoy!
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review - thank you so much!
The moment I realized that it's a time travel story I was hooked. I love time travel stories, especially if they come in the form of a fairy tale retelling - Snow White in this case.
The author weaves these two elements together to create a wonderful, cosy story that kept me glued to the pages from start to finish.
The time travel technology was explained in an interesting way that didn't get too complicated and in the way of the story. Keeping track of the different storylines was fun, and I really enjoyed reading about all the changes to the timeline that can happen if you change just a tiny thing. I also enjoyed the moral questions that came up.
Overall, it was a quick-paced read for me and exactly what I had hoped for!
Shattered Snow is an interesting timey wimey wibbley wobbley sci-fi retelling of the Snow White fairy tale. If you liked Cinder, you should enjoy this story of Bianca and the Mirror.
When I went in, all I really knew was that there would be time travel and Snow White. Well, the author certainly didn’t disappoint. In the beginning, I wasn’t sure how the fairy tale elements would come to be, but goodness... Once the story hit its stride, there were so many Easter eggs pertaining to the fairy tale intertwined with the sci-fi/ time travel, it was amazing.
Some of the timey wimey bits were over my head but others made complete sense and I enjoyed it all!
I listened to this story on audiobook and Rachel White did an amazing job as performer.
The end made me very happy and tied everything up beautifully!! What a fun story!
*Thank you so much to the author, Rachel Huffmire, and the publisher for the gifted audiobook!*
"Mirror, Mirror on the ground, what's the freshest re-telling around?"
It's Shattered Snow, hands down. Last time I read a fairy tale retelling that felt this new and fresh was the Cinder series. If you liked that series, you need to give this one a try.
Huffmire weaves a masterful tapestry in this tale of time travel and folk-lore. I had so much fun seeing where and how all the familiar elements fit together, as well as seeing new elements (Greek mythology and actual historical figures, anyone?) brought into the mix.
There were a few times I struggled to keep up with the timelines and rules of the time travel tech, but never ever to the point of considering putting the book down; the intrigue of it all had me far too hooked from the get go.  I just occasionally had to go back to the dates in the helpful chapter headings to get my bearings.
It's a super clean read (in terms of both grammar and thematic content), and perhaps one of the freshest parts of the story was how minor a role romance played. Don't get me wrong, there's still a prince for this princess if you enjoy that kind of thing, but finding love never felt like the goal and it read far more like a thriller than a romance.
Shattered Snow releases Jan 8th, but you can, and should, pre-order on Amazon now.
I'm not normally a big fan of time-travel in any genre, but I liked the premise for this book about time-travel being a risky secretive enterprise undertaken with the purpose of saving someone unlucky from the past, and how it developed.
“That’s the trouble when you start breaking the rules. You think you know which rules are worth breaking. But then the people around you start thinking if you can break one rule, why not another? And another”
Would you be willing to break the law to save those the system has abandoned? Keltson, The Mirror is.
Meet your players:
- Keltson Grammar. Carntyne, Glasgow, Scotland 2069
- Lilia Vaschenko. Zapasnoy Junkyard, Yekaterinburg, Russia 2069
- Margaretha von Waldeck, 16th century countess. Weilburg, Germany
- Ammond MacBarran. USA 2069
- ITTA, the International Time Travel Agency
Written in 3rd person, past tense. Multiple pov
This is a sci-fi historical time travel retelling of Snow White, so be prepared to have your brain scrambled from all the jumps.
This is one of the most creative retellings I have ever read, and that is saying a lot as I've read my share. The time travelling aspect brings a fresh take, and a new opportunity to flesh out some old and new characters, to make their growth or changes make sense (ex. a princess wouldn't just know and adapt right away to housework, Disney). It is also very twisty.
Perfect for fans of time travel shenanigans, really.
Keltson was my favourite. He believes in his cause and works with incredible dedication, and self-sacrifice. He's intelligent, kind, hard-working, methodical, an idealist. His weak spot may very well be how much he cares and empathises, or things wouldn't have escalated as they did. He also has a bit of snark I hope to see more of - would love to see some banter in the next one.
I disliked and distrusted Lilia from around week 2, and the book met me in full force to say I was right! Her heart was never fully in the right place, she never did it for altruism, and it showed when her thoughts immediately turned nasty towards the one she was meant to protect, as well as more selfish, the second she was found out. Really liked the sci-fi explanation of her downwards path to hate and madness, as well as the old lady stunts. Her background was very smart.
During this book, I kept asking why nobody could just be still. Just for a little bit, stop making everything worse. But that wouldn't make for a twisty story, now would it? I get it, yet I couldn't help feeling annoyed with some characters frequently, which in turn made the book drag a bit for me and detract from my enjoyment. "Just stop making Keltson's life more difficult!" I scolded like they were my children. This is the reason I'm not giving it a 4 stars.
I loved the illustrations and extracts from documents, sketchbooks and journals. They let us visualise items, people and give us access to useful information, without turning them into info dumps.
The book ends with an upcoming mission, hinting at a Sleeping Beauty retelling. Now that things have changed, hopefully the sequel will have less annoying characters.
Two questions I have: Who is Dorothea Wild, and what is her allegiance?
I really enjoyed this book! Fairy tale retellings and time travel are two of my favorite elements to a piece of fiction, so I was very intrigued and excited about this book before I even turned the first page. Once I got started, though, it had me captivated for so many more reasons. The story dove right in to the action—The plot and character development were immediately interesting. From the first page I was hooked. I really liked that the POV smoothly switched between several of the characters, allowing the reader to understand the inner-workings and motivations of them all and intimately witness how each character changes as the story progresses. While reading “Shattered Snow” I realized that my favorite fairy tale retellings have two qualities. First, they surprise me. This can be tricky when the reader is already familiar with the tale that the retelling is based on, but it’s pretty important. Second, the retelling gives more clarification and explanation for parts of the original tale, which brings an added depth and richness to that original story. “Shattered Snow” really came through on both accounts! Sometimes fairy tales are super black and white, and I think a good retelling throws in some gray areas. The original Evil Queen in “Snow White” is one of the most extreme villains I can think of. There is no way to relate to her or remotely make sense of her motives. I mean, she loathes and tries to kill her young stepdaughter because she isn’t as beautiful as her? Really? But in “Shattered Snow” we get in her head and so much depth is added to her character. We get her back story and her motivation, and it all makes SO much more sense! When I think about the original “Snow White” tale I also think that magic mirror is of interest. What is the mirror’s back story? Where did it come from and how did the queen obtain it? We get all of that and more in “Shattered Snow.” I love the incredibly inventive back story for the mirror. The ending is fantastic (I wish I could be more specific but I don’t want to give anything away!) and the way it lines up a potential sequel is brilliantly done! I can’t wait for the next book! This is a unique, exceptional addition to the fairy tale retelling genre and I highly recommend it!
Edit: I read in another review someone said this is probably the best retelling they have read for Snow White. I HAVE to say: This is absolutely hands down the best retelling I have ever read of Snow White.
I just reread it--SO good!
I will admit I am a sucker for fairy tale retellings. I may be a thirty something mom but who doesn’t need a little magic and adventure to escape from the world we live in sometimes? Rachel Huffmire was a new author to me but I decided to go in head first and blind as soon as I saw the blurb and cover. This hands down was the most unique and imaginative way to rewrite a classic fav of mine, Snow White. This won’t read like you think it will, it will be even better. There is an element of time travel, something that tends to get a tad confusing at times, but Huffmire did a wonderful job of making it very simple and easy to understand, as well as believable. We get to travel to imaginative and detailed places, you feel as if you stepped into the time travel machine with the characters. I love a good fairy tale with imaginative scene building and this has a lot of it! I was also a mega fan of how the newest characters fit in well with the classics we have grown up loving and knowing. This is a cast of characters you don’t want to miss. I am anxious to get my hands on the next book in the series!
I know I’ve said it before, but I am a sucker for retellings of classic fairytales. This is my first book from this author, and it was wonderful. I can’t say Snow White was my favorite until this retelling. So so good. I’m ready for another one.
Probably the best reimagining of the Snow White fairy tale i have read.
Kelston Grammar. lives in the mid 21st century and has invented a time machine. In direct contravention of the laws of the International Time travel Agency (ITTA) he is sending people back in History to right previous wrongs.
Lilia is a Russian scrap mechanic who becomes one of his clients travelling to 16th Century Germany with the intention of saving the life of Margaretha von Waldeck aka Bianca or Snow white. Far from being Margaretha's saving grace she becomes the evil Stepmother.
Ammond MacBarran a disillusioned employee of ITTA becomes another of Kelston's time travellers.
Together these characters bring us a whole new look at an ancient fairytale. In a well composed narrative interspersed with diary entries, logs from the ITTA , Epigraphs and Illustrations. The whole transported me into its fictional world.
Retellings are one of my favourite genres and this is one of the best in that genre
I enjoyed this more than I had hoped.
The time travel twist to the classic fairytale elements was refreshing and something that I had never read before. The romance didn't overshadow the other newer elements in the book and that made me really happy, don't get me wrong I am all for romance and happy endings but sometimes it just gets a bit too much. I was glad that this wasn't the case for this particular book.
A few science elements were a bit tricky to understand, I blame my already rusted brain, but the book as a whole was wrapped up pretty nicely and it managed to make me lose myself in it's beautiful ficitonal world for a while there.
I absolutely love this book! It is captivating and beautifully written; definitely, a must read! I absolutely recommend it and feel it would make a great gift also. I can't wait to share it with my young adult and teen bookworms at home. Looking forward to more literature from this author. Read and enjoy!
I loved this fairy tale/retelling of Snow White by Rachel Huffmire. This one involves time-travel which is a hit and miss for me. This one, thankfully, was a hit. For one thing, the author used Greek mythological creatures in the story and I love mythology, so that was a hit.
I really liked that it was not focused on the romance between the prince and princess, and I'd feel very comfortable recommending this retelling of Snow White to young adults. I have found that many young readers enjoy time-travel and seem to really like the different worlds built. Sometimes multiple POV's can be confusing, but I thought it worked well for this book. One thing that I really liked is being able to see how characters thought and felt and not just see the actions they took. Understanding a character's reasoning, even if you don't like their actions, can at least help the reader have some empathy for what created them to be who/what they are as a result.
Another point of interest that I honestly never really thought about until it was brought up in the book is the mirror. Who would've thought that there was anything more to the mirror? Not me.
I loved it and I highly recommend it.
Time travel fairy tale alert!
Fantasy meets sci-fi in this Snow White retelling. It's like Ender's Game had a baby with Cinder.
Timelines, characters, and settings blend to create a multi-verse world you do not want to leave--even though villains lurk and you're more than a little worried for the fates of everyone involved.
Rapid fire likes: A mesmerizing yet unexpected wicked queen, an imaginative twist on the "mirror", AN AGENCY (love me some agencies!), a countess with a prophesied doom, time travel that actually makes sense, icy worlds that make Frozen look like a tropical vacation, okay this list could never end because the book is THAT amazing.
Mirror, mirror, on the wall, Shattered Snow is the fairest --most exciting, creative, compelling--book of all! Someone hand me the sequel, STAT
Shattered Snow (The Mirror Chronicles Book 1) by Rachel Huffmire is a YA historical SciFi story and is an imaginative and unique retelling of a fairy tale. This time traveling tale is a fresh narrative and out of the box thinking by Rachel. She has woven the complexities and intricacies together to give us a story unlike others. This refreshing reimagining tale should be put on your books to read list.
*I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review**
I would give this book 4/5 stars.
All in all, Huffmire is a talented author and this is a great debut book– I can’t wait to read more of what she writes and I recommend you check out this book, especially if you love time travel and historical fiction.
I want to preface this by saying I normally do not like time travel books. There’s the Grandfather paradox and alternative realities that complicate things. Many times time-travel books solve their problems in the end with some rule that had ‘always been there’ but conveniently was never mentioned. Also, keeping track of everyone is infinitely harder with different time frames. I also, recently, tend to prefer contemporary fiction, simply because there’s less world-building to slog through.
Having said that, this book does a great job with setting up rules and sticking to them. Of keeping world building relatively subdued but understandable. Within the first few pages we get a good idea of what’s going on without being bored by description. Part of this comes from my favorite part of the book, the quotes/journal entries/etc at the beginning of each chapter, along with the dates. There are clear character arcs and each character feels unique and dynamic.
The descriptions were really well done. Very vibrant and easy to read. I was able to read this book in basically one sitting which attests to its pacing, stakes, and characters.
One thing I struggled with, though, especially at the beginning, was the dialogue. It felt too “on the nose’ (ie too much information in a way that people don’t really talk, functioning as a way to inform the reader but lacking in naturalness). For example, I really, really hated the word ‘na (ie I did’na quit my day job). It took me a while to understand it and even when I got that it stood for not, it felt awkward and kept tripping me up.
*spoilers*
There are some things I really wanted to like but couldn’t. For example, as much as I love feminism, back then a strong woman ordering a count around, especially at their first meeting, would not go over well. Even if he is a great guy. It’s just the power of social norms, sorry. He would at least be taken aback. It took me out of the story because it just wasn’t believable. (As much as I wanted to, I really did.)
I felt that the Mirror’s underlying motives for the whole operation was somewhat lacking. He wants money to keep the program going, sure, but the rest he’s just doing out of the goodness of his heart? I buy this more as the story goes on but not much at the beginning and not as much as I would like. Also, what makes him so committed to random people, like Bianka, enough that he would undergo a split? Again, I see glimpses of the answer but would have liked a bit more.
I enjoyed the fairy tale ending (with the brothers Grimm) immensely. This was both clever and satisfying. I also liked the Mirror coming to care for Bianka at the end. This helped the book not only plot wise and character wise, but also felt right– not forced nor out-of-the-blue nor predictable. Finally, I liked that the end was wrapped up but still open in some ways (for a sequel perhaps??) Can’t wait to read it, if so.
Wow! I am honestly quite impressed with this book. I imagine any retelling comes with a certain set of difficulties to manage, but to write an entire fairytale retelling with a sci-fi/time traveling mashup has to have provided a whole different set of challenges. And I’m honestly impressed.
I am not typically a fan of sci-fi. I think usually it’s not a problem with the authors or books, they just aren’t for me. However, I find time travel a fascinating a subject about which to ruminate. And since I had a friend who highly recommended this book, I decided to give it a go. Well worth it!
I really loved the way Rachel weaved this tale. This book is a retelling of the story Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, told with time travel, traveling between the 1550s and 2069.
There were several different elements I was curious how the author was going to make them work and then she would work in a specific character or detail of time travel and things would made sense. A few things I didn’t even realize how crucial to the overall story arc they would be and I was pleasantly surprised to see how things ultimately came together. The initial world building at the beginning felt a bit slow and it took me a few chapters to get into the book, but once I did, I was completely hooked and couldn’t wait to find out the ending.
Lilia makes the perfect “wicked step mother.” You won’t believe me about that at first but oooh. She plays her role perfectly. Bianca (Margareta) ends up being the perfect Snow White. I really liked her kindness and thoughtfulness, even if it did make her naive and foolish sometimes.
Kelton is super awesome. His moral compass, the drive behind his entire operation, was admirable and I appreciated how it led him to certain choices that ultimately became important to the story.
When some characters were introduced, like Jarul and Bay and Amond, I was confused why they were there but then they each became so important for the story later. Jarul particularly surprised me because he seemed so inconsequential but then he ended up being a key figure several times!
I was really so pleased with this book and the way the author tied up all the loose ends, creating this complete story. I can’t even think of any holes anywhere. Everything just worked! Great work, Rachel! I am looking forward to reading the next book.
AUDIOBOOK REVIEW: Read by Rachel V. White—I was impressed with this reader. Emotions were raw and evident in her voice and you could really feel what the characters must have been feeling. She did pretty good giving each character a distinctive voice. Her accents were also fantastic. Since there were Irish, German, Russian, English, and American characters, it could have been easy to get confused or do subpar, but the accents were amazing every time.
Retelling of Snow White with Time Travel 4.75🌟
I listened to this one with my 14 year old daughter and we loved it... Although we were definitely confused in spots. This is not a story you can multi task with easily, it's very complex with the time jumps and memory flashes, but I feel like that's pretty normal for the time travel genre. This was an ingenious retelling of Snow White, you get caught up in the characters and their stories. The complexity really keeps your brain engaged as you try to follow and figure out the different time lines, people and shifting plot lines. I have read a few other time travel books and love how when you read them again you come out with things that you missed the first time-- this is definitely one of those books that you'll enjoy rereading. It's a great debut to the series and beautifully sets the stage for book 2. My daughter felt the book was a bit long at times but I feel like that was the stage setting that most first books in a longer series often go through.
This is 14+ read primarily due to the complexity and writing style but otherwise is a clean read.
The narrator was fun to listen to and did a great job with the different voices, acting and overall narration.
I should start with this: I listened to this book on Audible and I'm VERY picky about narrators. But from the get-go, I loved the narrator for this story, and NOT ONCE did I think "Oh, I don't like that." Which...I don't think has ever happened to me before. This is a great listen.
As for the story itself, it blew me away. Rachel Huffmire is a true craftsman. To think, you can know a story your entire life and yet someone can take that story and recreate it in a way that is so delightfully true to the original, yet you can't see what's coming next! And the ending was just so much more satisfying than I ever dreamed it could be. I feel like this story did everything right.
A word here about time travel. Everyone knows time travel is risky because 'plot holes galore' in just about every popular time-travel story--but this one was an absolute triumph. Rachel pulled together all the mechanics and rules of her world, covering the bases in plot, and explaining enough to keep me believing. It never felt like a crutch OR a cliche. It was masterful.
Couldn't recommend this book enough. I am on the edge of my seat for the next one!
Shattered Snow by Rachel Huffmire is an interesting read and would be perfect for teenagers. It’s hard to write a book that is suitable for both teenage boys and girls, but I would say this book is suitable for all.
Shattered Snow is a retelling is a fairytale classic. The story hasn’t just been reimagined, it’s been turned on its head and retold in a way that is both exciting and unpredictable.
Set in the future, we get a glimpse of how life could look in 2069. I’m not sure the world will be prepared for time travelling, especially as we already know...changing the past can have devastating repercussions on the future.
Kelston, aka ‘The Mirror’, runs an underground operation. His goal is to use time travel to help rescue people throughout history. He is joined on his mission by Lilia, a mechanic from Russia, and together they set out to change the course of history.
I loved this story. It was action packed from the start and had me hooked. I would have loved to have got to know the characters a little better, but this story is definitely with reading no matter what age you are.
I think that this was a very creative spin on Snow White. I personally struggle reading stuff with time travel because I just can't keep anything straight, but I love the idea of it, so I keep trying. But half the time I don't what the heck is going on. That's why I'm not rating this book. I think any failing is completely my failing and not the author's. I wish they'd make a movie of this...
What a delightful fairy tale retelling. This version was actually based on the original Snow White, Margaretha von Waldeck, who is an actual person. Of course I had to read about the original story. It was fun to see how Huffmire incorporated elements of the original story into her book. I started this book on vacation, and finished afterwards when I came home sick. It was a good book to distract me from not feeling well. Well-written and fun.
Time travel!?! Yes please! This book is a great adventure! So fun. At first this story was a little hard to follow with the new characters and the time travel. But it soon became apparent who was who and how they all related to each other.
Huffmire creates a world with colorful characters. My favorites being Bianka, Ammond and Baigh! Fun names with different attitudes, personalities and beliefs. I really loved the slight twist on a certain fairy tale, super cute.
This story is definitely worth a chance. I look forward to reading the next in the series especially since there was such a great and questioning ending!
Shattered Snow (The Mirror Chronicles Book 1) by Rachel Huffmire,is a retelling of the Snow White Tale. I am a fan of fairy tales and I love Snow White. I’ve read and watched movies of the remade tale and loved all of them. This one was no exception. You think you know where you are in the story and its going along very nicely and then it goes horribly wrong. At one-point I was nearly biting my nails because everything that could go wrong, did. This was a great story and I’m so glad I spent time with it. You will too.
Unique combination of sci-fi time travel with fairy-tale like fantasy. Good to see a strong, female lead within a story which openly discusses feminism. The plot is not taken over by ideology, however, as the reader is eager to discover if Lilia will be successful I’m her quest to save the future by travelling to the past.
Shattered Snow by Rachel Huffmire has become one of my favorite Fairy Tale retellings! The character development made this story unique and exceptional. I love that we get the villains backstory and the mirror is not just a face stuck on the wall. The author did a great job giving these characters more depth.
The ending was absolutely perfect! I highly recommend this story!
