A forbidden book. A dangerous secret. A life in the balance.
In the wake of a bullet and a broken heart, Emelynn Taylor learns the true portent of a gift she can barely control. Her discovery of a forbidden book unlocks explosive secrets that connect her to a past she never imagined.
Now someone is threatening to expose those secrets, and an unknown assailant is hunting her. With everyone hiding something, whom can she trust? Emelynn is thrust into the eye of a storm as two powerful factions clash: one ancient, one evil. And both of them want a piece of her.
Knowing that not even her gift of flight will save her, Emelynn forms an uneasy partnership with a dangerous man she must learn to trust—and then she must risk her gift and her future to protect her friends’ lives.
The second book in The Gift Legacy series, Hidden Enemy is a thriller that skirts the edges of reality in a world within our own. Climb aboard and escape the ordinary: take flight with Emelynn Taylor.
Hidden Enemy was previously published as The Gift: Revelation)
I'm very fortunate to live in a writer's paradise on one of the small northern Gulf Islands off the eastern shore of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. The rugged beaches and towering fir and arbutus trees that surround me often end up in my stories. When I'm not pouring my imagination into my computer, I'm futzing in gardens, making a mess of the kitchen or hiking local trails. I write stories that entice you to believe the impossible and escape the everyday for a while. Enjoy the read!
I was intrigued by the first book in this series, but the second book really ramped up the drama and the action. The heroine Emelynn has a priceless gift that is sought by a pack of villains, who are willing to resort to torture and murder to get what they want. Thankfully she and her gift are protected by another group of sympathetic friends -- although it's sometimes difficult to tell friend from foe. Meanwhile, Evelyn resorts to casual but steamy sex to help heal her broken heart. There's never a dull moment in Revelation, the title of which refers to Evelyn's discovery of how and why she received her gift in the first place.
Having read book one in the series, I bought Hidden Enemy because I wanted good old fashioned escape and entertainment, and it did not disappoint.
Em is finally starting to get her life back together when she discovers a secret from her father’s past. I won’t give away any spoilers, but there there are many moments when I couldn’t put it down and didn’t see things coming. Put another way, there was nothing predictable or formulaic about this book — which is not only a winner for a fussy reader like me, but high praise for the author.
JP’s meticulous attention to detail, deft descriptions and characterisation, all contribute to a rich setting, characterisation, and world-building. For instance, Em’s pull at the end of each day to fly toward the lighthouse was palpable, and exhilarating.
I read Hidden Enemy over a couple of days because it was so compelling, and now I am very content that I can spend my Christmas break bingeing on the rest of the series!
Hidden Enemy #2 – I find this is a better book than the previous two I have read so far. This will be a hard review to write without turning it into a book report. This story picks up three months after Secret Sky ends. I like that there is so much going on with the old and new storylines. While there is a lot of intrigue, Emeline is evolving. She has growth and changes in her makeup making her a more developed person. There are some mysteries to add even more interest and intrigue to the good storylines, with a good blend of the old and present storylines. Although I keep a good reading pace with the first two books, I had a hard time putting the book down. Hopefully, the rest of the books will increase or keep pace with the continued growth in characters and storylines. I found several books of this series in Booksprout. 4*
Secret Sky #1 – This is my first read by this author and I like it. The story’s beginning was slow where the author tried to make a mystery of what happened to Emelynn. The story is interesting, but too wordy, needs editing. The storylines are good with good characters, several of which were likeable. The author does well with her descriptions, adding to the interest of the story. There is infrequent usage of vulgar language. Ms. McLean shows a complete disregard for the proper usage f God and expressions concerning God, which shows me an intolerance and prejudice against Christians. There are plenty of inoffensive expressions that will work in place of God. There is an overview, which I appreciate knowing what a book is about before I read it. I found several books of this series in Booksprout. 3.5*
Lover Betrayed (Companion Book or #1.5) – I recommend reading this book after Secret Sky since there are parts that explain some things that were not discussed in detail in SS. Of course, there will be redundancies, which I skipped. I found this book too wordy with a good viewpoint from him, but not really a need to read book. It is largely about him, his father and his brother. The event of her kidnapping is detailed. Again, the author shows her prejudice against Christians with her word choices. There is an overview, which I appreciate knowing what a book is about before I read it. I found several books of this series in Booksprout. 4*
Revelations that could kill you How could I NOT like/love it? After my 'Awakening' to these fantasy stories, I am hooked. Since I have (almost) identified with Emelynn, the heroine, it was as if this book was written for, partially even about me, I had to find out what happened to me after the heartbreaking ending of book 1, 'Awakening'. I suffered along with her, as she tried to get her first love out of her mind and in doing so did some very crazy, dangerous things... She learned more and more about her "Gift" - suffered for it and often wished she would have known better than to accept it at 12 years of age. Despite being harassed, hurt, kidnapped and almost killed in an arson fire set to her beloved home "flying" is her only salvation. When she does, she feels free, she can breathe... She is amazed to learn how her father was connected to 'Jolene', the person who 'gifted' her. Finding and sorting through her father's papers and journals, they reveal a past to her she can hardly believe. It throws her to have had a brother. How can the writer, J.P. McLean come up with all these new ideas, new twists, new revelations and draw the reader in deeper and deeper? How can I not want to read the next book? As a writer myself I wonder how she can plan the story, lay it out, how can she 'foresee' the 'accidents' or happenings? Does she ever sleep? Do the characters play in her subconscious mind and she just has to write it all down, let it flow into her fingers and type? Does she even know how 'gifted SHE is? New characters and settings flow seamlessly into the story and you, the reader remembers the previous ones and easily add the new ones. You won't forget one of them.
Emelynn is recovering from a bullet wound an a broken heart. She got both when trying to save Sandy who just happened to be the wife of her lover.. She is still trying to discover who she is and what all her gift entails. An old letter provides her with some insights but her peace is fleeting as someone seems to be after her and she has no one to really trust. Danger lurks around very corner.
This is the second book in the Gift Legacy series and is just as thrilling as the first one. The story takes place from where the first book left off. The characters are fantastic, full of life and personality that makes them pop off the page. I found the storyline interesting and filled with suspense, action, adventure, mystery and enough twist and turns to keep you interested until the final pages. The plot is thoughtfully layer out and addictive, you cannot help but keep turning the pages. I particularly enjoyed how Emelynn grows personally and physically as she tries to learn a whole new life. Sometimes second books are not as good as the first but the story and the writing seems to be getting better and better.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This book reunites the readers with Emelynn Taylor – nocturnal noises in her house making her restless. Her request for sleeping pills is denied, Emery recommends having an alarm system installed. This is not the end of Em's troubles, though.
With The Gift: Revelation, J. P. McLean has once again created a thrilling combination of mystery, paranormal, urban fantasy and a touch of romance. It is a compelling read, drawing you in as you learn more about Emelynn (‘Em’) and her gift. J. P. McLean paints a clear picture of Em’s mind while the story evolves. I was drawn close to Em and her story – an invisible friend and ally. The characters are of sufficient depth, believable with their flaws and virtues. The story is a very nicely woven combination of several genres, has a wonderful flow; it was easy to get hooked.
This is a book for you if you like mysteries or paranormal romance with a very urban touch and believable characters, some strewn in steamy situations, and some violent events.
The stunning second book in The Gift Legacy series!
Having read the first two variations of the first book, one from Em's perspective and one from Jackson’s, I was very curious to see how the author would take it from there. I must say that I am delighted with this book, liking it even more than the first. It seems better paced, and Em has grown as a character. While it is a long book, you don't even really notice because there is so much going on—on several fronts. The author definitely has some unique twists and turns going on here, and I am curious to see how she keeps that up in the other books of the series. Em is still trying to get control of her abilities, and she learns much more about her past and her father's. Em gets more deeply embroiled within the world of the Fliers. I do like how this author has created this world-within-a-world setting. The book is definitely paranormal, but it is side-by-side with our world. Very well done.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
Finally we get to review the second book of JP McLean’s “The Gift Legacy” Series, and continue to enjoy this FANTASTIC and magical adventure. If you haven’t read the first book, Secret Sky, do yourself a favor and DO IT. Secret Sky one of the most original, mysterious and magical paranormal romances ever! – Other fantastic books by JP McLean here – SO! We get are back with amazing characters like Avery, and Emelynn , our MC, as the second book starts off with a thrilling scene and heart-pumping narration! OHHHHH YEEEEEAHHHH! JP McLean knows how to grip us at once and make us curious in the first scenes. Awesome!
The ever-inviting narrative of JP McLean makes this book easy and pleasant without ever taking out the underlying tension. We, readers, get lost on the story quickly and continue to enjoy this second book as if we were reading the first book five minutes ago. This, because JP McLean moves on with the second book and gives discreet recaps.
As we read, we can see that there are possible conflicts brewing that if not handled well by our main character, things will get complicated and catastrophic real fast. This is great because it adds another layer of expectation and curiosity to the book. Nice! Possibilities and betrayal are woven in the background due to conflict of interests between powerful parts and the covey. The mystery of Emelynn father re-appears and we know that from the previous book that he may be related to Jolene! But in what way? Will our suspicions be confirmed this time? Because it seems like it’s a pivotal piece between the mysteries that we are seeing develop.
If you love dark humor and sarcasm, this book is filled with it, as our main character, Emelynn, is one of the queens of sarcasm! Hahahahahah. There are scenes that you will have to stop and catch your breath due to her remarks and thoughts. Hhahahahah. GREAT point by JP Mclean. PRICELESS! Hahahahahahahahha.
There’s another thing that caught our attention on our MC. Emelynn was very observant towards things outside and inside of her, showing wisdom and quirks that readers will relate to. THANK GOD the author didn’t take out the determined and relentless part of our MC. She is a woman that fights for her own skin and for others, and never let’s herself be a victim. She is a true inspiration. LOVED THAT!
As the story matures and the bases of this second book are all finished, which doesn’t take long, the main plot starts to roll. There is an enemy within the covey and he is closer than they all think. An intelligent individual, or group, lurking and gaining on them without revealing himself. Trouble looms higher and tension increases as it seems like Emelyn is becoming too dependent of her abilities. A dangerous addiction that can put her and other’s at risk? Things only get spicier as there the police starts to investigate the murders of the Wrights. Tip: You will want to punch someone in the throat, we assure you, ahahhaha. VERY well made by JP McLean! AWESOME “antagonist” in there. LOVELY!
JP Mclean, with her grace of narrative keeps every secret in the shadows, including who is this… villain, the person, or organization’s identity, his, hers, or their intentions unknown even from us readers. There are so many mysteries at once, so many possibilities and so little threads to follow that… we have no other choice but to keep reading and pay minute attention to every word written in this book. Call this a world-class Romance indeed. *Claps*
But the book isn’t only tension and fighting, or running. This masterpiece also has many relaxed and fun scenes! Games and humorous chats present themselves as the covey tries to work as a unit and as they try to prepare for this threat. It felt real, and the conversations were relatable and as expected on moments of relaxation.
One of the things that we have appreciated was that JP McLean made the emotional conflicts relatable, detailed and explicit. Our MC reacted, thought and felt like a real person when dealing with heartbreak, hurt, and other conflicts and it was beautiful to read . *Claps*
GUUUUUUYYYSSSS, there is a BIG surprise in this book that will shock you! OHHHHH MYYYY GOOOODDDDD!! We wish we could tell you, but you know our rules: No spoilers. But let us say this: It’s a surprise worth reading 500 pages for. OHHHH MY GOOOOOOODDDD! You guys will drop! Damn… The ROMANCE! OH the DRAMA! Oh man! This is how you do it. Ok. Warning: JP McLean had no mercy, when it came to hitting us with the feels in this book. Nope, she put on brass-knuckles of emotions and sucker punched the reader in the heart. OMG! This is intense right here!! Damn! LOVE IT!
Secrets, love affairs, betrayal, NEW POWERS, revelations, and lots of heart-pumping scenes. Hidden Enemy is a masterpiece that will leave you breathless. Grab the first book, and this one, right now. This is a series you can’t dare not to read.
Pros: EXCELLENT romantic plots, EXCELLENT mystery. There is no way readers can guess the plot, not even if they tried. AMAZING!! EXCELLENT character construction, dynamics and interactions EXCELLENT humor, be it light, dark or sarcastic EXCELLENT depth to each character, specially our MC EXCELLENT conflicts between characters and inner struggles with each character EXCELLENT sex scenes. EXCELLENT plot NO CLICHÉS!!!!!!!!!
When I finished the first book in this trilogy, I could not buy and start reading Revelation fast enough. Within ten minutes, I was cuddled up in my blankets again poring over J.P. McLean's work. Over the years I think my imaginative explorations had dwindled but Ms. McLean changed all that. She crafted her unusual world so well, moving into each plot twist seemed effortless and fun. For any reader who loves fantasy, romance, suspense, and intrigue, accepting The Gift is a treat you owe yourself today.
While fantasy isn't my usual genre, I do enjoy these stories my JP McLean. There is just enough combination of mystery, paranormal, and a bit of romance. In this story, EmeLynn is fighting someone who wants to expose her and someone who wants to kill her. Not a good thing! How does she survive? That is for you to read the book to find out. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book from Booksprouts.
I started with the first book, Secret Sky: The Gift. So, so good. Now this book just kept pulling me into this world. An absolutely compelling read with awesome characters and the story is as wonderful and the first book.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
"Revelation" was fun and capturing to read. It added new dimensions for the imagination, as even the cover portrays. Emelynn lives with intrigue and adventure as she learns more about the qualities and capabilities of "The Gift." Enjoy!
Another passionate and fun romp on land and in the skies from J.P. Mclean. Her adventure fantasy series, while full of tense and dangerous moments, is also playful and expansive. I can't wait for the third in the series to arrive...
This is book 2 of The Gift Legacy. This book is one of those hard to put down books. Keeps you hooked from the beginning. The characters and story are very well written. I highly recommend reading this book.

This book is a great read! I liked it better than the first in the series because the characters are familiar now. Looking forward to starting the third book! Thanks, JP!
This was such a fun and exhilarating paranormal and fantasy thriller. The author did such an amazing job of taking the elements that made the first book in this series such a hit and ramped up the action and suspense by about ten notches, making this such an exciting and action-fueled story. The balance of the character development and world-building that the author had with the deeper dive into the world of the Fliers and the mythos behind the different families that make up this hidden world made this story just fly by (pun intended)!
The arc that the protagonist had in this narrative was such a great advancement of the character development of this sequel overall. The way the author forged Emelynn’s actions and showed her evolution from a young woman thrust into this strange world of powers and hidden societies to a woman learning to adapt and evolve in this new world of hers and grow her own gifts, as well as take ownership and power within her personal life and dive into her own past at the same time, made this such a powerful read that many readers will be able to wrap themselves in.
The Verdict
An entertaining, adrenaline-fueled, and suspense-filled paranormal and fantasy thriller, author JP McLean’s “Hidden Enemy” is a must-read book. The mythos and history that the author explores of both the protagonist and the Fliers themselves, as well as the infusion of some steamy romantic scenes and an examination of how we process trauma made this such an engaging read, and an open-ended final chapter will leave readers eager to jump further into this amazing series.
Hidden Enemy by JP McLean is the second installment in the Gift Legacy novel series. JP McLean's writing is fabulous. She immediately transports her readers into a different world than the one they sit within. Her style is like that of my other favorite writers such as Jesse Milhalik, Maya Banks, and Heather Graham. This novel is a combination of suspense, action, and paranormal thriller. I also love the strong female heroine, Emelynn. She is so wonderful to follow. So many plot twists! I was on the edge of my seat with this read. JP McLean knows how to write well and keep her readers hooked! I love this novel, and I highly recommend it to all.
I received this copy from the publisher. This is my voluntary review.
A book that many liked but I was not among that group. It was an interesting premise with no substance to make it important behind it. I kept wanting the story to go someplace and I felt it didn’t. This book (2 of the 3) took a large part of the beginning to re-explain what happened in the first novel, so it took a while to get going into the plot of this book. There were some interesting parts (like when Manse kidnapped the protagonist and tried to get her to pass over the Gift to him) … however, for characters you’d assume were quite intelligent, the fact that he missed a key part of the chant was difficult to stomach. For the most part, I found the plot predictable and lacking depth and substance. Still, I’m glad I read it.
This book was even better than the first one, something I didn’t think was possible. It began quietly enough and spent a quarter of the book with very little conflict. Instead, we read about Emelynn’s life, that’s the main character, and how she was adjusting to her new life skill, her friends, her fight back to fitness, and the beautiful place she lived. It didn’t matter that nothing happened. I glided through the pages as her life was descriptive and enjoyable.
Then, the ‘conflict kicked in. Emelynn returned home and found people in black had evaded her sanctuary. There is a violent confrontation, that not only leaves her reeling, it left me feeling that way too. From that point onwards, I could not stop reading or thinking about it.
This is a riveting read and I thoroughly recommend it.
Hidden Enemy (The Gift Legacy #2) by J.P. McLean Review for Creative Edge Publiicity. This is a wonderfully beautiful story of connections of family. Emelynn Taylor finds out the story of why she was gifted. The mystery shows part of her father's personal history. She learns to connect her convey and practice things that will not only protect them, but herself.
