What happens when the heart wants what the mind resists? Cadence Nice went from being an optimistic romantic to a coldhearted commitment-phobe. She convinced herself she was over it, finished, done with searching for a stable relationship after wasting her time with an ex who wasn’t serious. No longer did she pine for her stomach to flutter with butterflies or her heart to skip a beat for love. In fact, throw the whole Prince Charming away, his white horse, and the storybook happily ever after too.All she wanted was sex. Just sex, only sex, and with someone she couldn’t love. She thought she found the perfect placeholder in a man she despised but life has a way with switching things up.After sleeping with an enemy, her next-door neighbor, Meki Knight, Cadence believed she found bliss in keeping things only physical between them. She was so wrong. Cadence adopted her cold exterior with hopes of giving herself a permanent fix for her jaded heart. But she’ll soon learn just what happens when you accidentally find love in a hookup culture.*This is a novella. Readers are advised to read the short story, “Unsilent Knight,” before reading “A Love Deferred.”
Brookelyn wrote her first short story when she was a sophomore in high school. Back then she discovered how using her experience as a teen living in Brooklyn to create romantic shorts was just as exciting to her as retail shopping and going on dates. After starting her first semester of college two years later, Brookelyn’s creative writing became more of a hobby and something to do to escape the stress of midterms and finals. Now in her 30s as a freelance writer, penning short stories and novellas is her everything. While her experience with writing has evolved for the better, her undying love for creating fiction remains unchanged. Brookelyn's focus is on creating contemporary women's fiction with characters based in urban settings. Her stories chronicles the emotional journeys and erotic experiences of women today through her characters and the scenarios they're thrown into.
The motivation behind her brand of writing has a lot to do with what she discovered storytelling provided for her - an escape. Her goal with her work is to create characters and urban worlds that offer a great escape for fiction readers looking for a break from the daily grind of adulting and who prefer to relax with good books and short stories. When she’s not freelancing, doing yoga, or showing her husband and toddler lots of love, she can be found sitting at her computer desk, with her legs folded, and a cup of coffee (or a glass of wine) at arm’s reach as she types or edits her latest short or novella.
Everything that was lacking in Meki and Cadence’s Holiday Unsilent Knight story was poured into their follow up in excess!!! Y’all!!!! Why did I love this story soooooooo fkn much!! The holiday story was a bit of a let down so I went into this with ZERO expectations. To say this book blew me away was an understatement!
We pick back up a year later into Meki and Cadence’s situationship and things seem to be going well. The neighbor’s are enjoying sex without attachment and let’s face it, who did they think they were fooling. We ALL know that eventually someone is going to fall in love if not both and in this case Meki fell first. Idk what it is about the man falling first but the pressure he applies and the love he professes makes me tingle in all the right places! Needless to say after the hurting Terrell’s b*tch ass put on Cadence she is not trying to make the same mistakes and fall in love with another man that will waste her time. And this doesn’t fair well for her nor Meki.
The way I held my breath for like 60% of this book!!! My heart nearly stopped several times because why were they doing this to each other!! Hurt people definitely hurt people combined with play stupid games win stupid prizes 😩😩😩Brooklyn wrote tf out of this book and redeemed herself 10 fold! Sometimes you gotta kiss a frog (reading Holiday Unsilent Knight) to get to your prince (this book) so please kiss the frog so that y’all can enjoy this book just as much as I did. Unfortunately I do feel like book 1 provides the necessary context that you need to really enjoy book 2.
Another amazing read by Ms. Mosley! I love how she writes her books to be so relatable especially her characters.
I don’t think I’ve ever read a story like this one. Cadence was so stubborn letting her past relationship dictate how she dealt with her “situationship” with Meki. & yesss Meki is all man described looking like Tyler Lepley 🤤🥰 yet he showed his vulnerability and his emotions. You don’t see that a lot in these books that we read.
Shout out to Meki’s mom Josephine & Cadence cousin Caira 🥰 Josephine & Caira helped Cadence to see that Meki is the one girlllllllll. Don’t let him get away!!!! lol
When she finally went to San Francisco & popped up on Meki at his gym 🥰🥰🥰🥰 I’m spoiling the book omggg 😬 my fav part.
I’ll be thinking about these book characters for a min ☺️
This was a super dope and amazing read I don’t think I was able to breathe the entire book because I was on edge on how everything would unfold and honey lawd Cadence and Meki sent me through some tough emotions but that I goodness that fear stopped being a factor and the past held no favor... I love this book so much it was really great
The draw for me to this novella was how it didn't play out in the usual love story fashion! Cadence and Meki's journey was different, and for once the male lead was the most vulnerable and more willing to put himself out there! As I continue to make my way through Brookelyn's catalog, I'm here for all of it!
This was amazing. It was spicy, sweet and savoury. What I love most about your books is now in tune you are with your characters and reality. They way you write is so beautiful. You showcase real issues. And when I read your books I feel like I always align with the characters and understand them so perfectly which makes it an even more amazing read. Candece was so caught up in what happened in her pass that she almost let her future get away but I’m happy she took her leap faith and got her happy ending. There was a lot of character development for both of them and this entire masterpiece… Chefs kiss 🤌🏻
Cadence and Meki return in the continuation of their unorthodox love story. We first read about them in the Christmas short story Unsilent Knight.
The lovers are still next door neighbors with benefits. The thing is Cadence can’t seem to get over the hurt and betrayal that he ex left in his wake. Instead of looking for love, she is determined to only have a sexual relationship. Meki agrees to the terms, but somewhere along the way catches feelings.
Cadence is a stubborn woman who won’t admit she has feelings too, until one night when Meki put it on her so good she yelled “I love you” in the throws of passion. Now, she meant it, but acted as if it was just the orgasm talking.
Things change between them as Cadence avoid Meki like the plague. I won’t ruin the end, but I will day drama ensues and then the happily for now.
This was a good story. Theirs is an uncommon love and a very unusual path to happiness. I enjoyed the banter between the two and the intro of Mekhi’s mother. Getting a little more background on his personal life was good and helped us to understand him a bit more.
This story had just the right amount of angst. Some times I'm in the mood for a lot, sometimes not so much. I wasn't in the mood for a lot. I enjoyed it! I will be reading more from this author.
SOME SPOILERS AHEAD...YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!!!
I understood Cadence's apprehension about acknowledging her feelings for Meki. She was in a relationship for like a decade that turned out to be a complete waste of her time (been there!). But it got to a point where her denial was ridiculous. I'm glad he didn't make it hard for her once she was ready to fix it.
I also liked how he would get her attention when they first started their arrangement.
I’m still rocking with Ms. Mosley and truly enjoyed this story. This author always brings the unconventional couple to head an d has readers wanted to strangle and comfort the characters all at once and that’s what keeps me coming back to her writing. Great work Ms. Mosley
Meki and Cadence were cuddy buddies for a year and eventually fall in love much to Cadence's chagrin. She had to work through her previous relationship skeletons and address those so that she can see that she was worthy of Meki's love and even better-he was worth hers.
I really enjoyed this story because it shows a flipside of 2 Alpha personalities meeting and trying to keep it sexual. I love seeing Meki showing his venerability and his desire for Cadence to respond to it. I also can understand Cadence struggle and how an unworthy man can have you messed up. Good job Brooklyn this read was thoroughly enjoyable.
Cadence and Meki are so good together. The getting to HEA was unconventional and sweet! I really was pulling for these two characters. He was so open, I love a man that's open! This was such a easy book to lose myself in. I am a fan of Brookelyn Mosley's storytelling!
Ok, Cadence wth?!?! She was on my nerves. I tried to have empathy for her, but I couldn't because her logic was childish. Meki was right for her, his patience and persistence was romantic. There scenes were much better, I enjoyed this more than the prequel.
Just when I thought I couldn’t find a better love story, along comes Cadence and Meki. A very good story teaching us all a lesson about patience, forgiveness, love and change.
Meki was everything and more of what Cadence was looking for but was too afraid to go for at the same time. Enjoyed getting closure of their story; so glad the author decided to give it to us.
I enjoyed the relationship between Menu and Caedence. I'm happy we got to see their story through. I could've done without the unnecessary Trump reference and the use of the term "mulatto".
First of all I love enemies to lovers and I love the chase/ when the girl plays hard to get. Their ending was so perfect can’t wait to read more from this author.
Let me just start off by saying Ms. Mosley you have acquired a new fan in me lol
I enjoyed Cae and Meki's back and forth the first go round, but watching them grow together so to speak was fun and intense. Meki was EVVVVEEERRYYYTHHING Cae wanted and needed even though she tried to cap and act like it wasn't.
I love all Brookelyn's books but this is one of my favorite. Meki was not afraid to be vulnerable with Candace. When Candace finally acknowledged her feelings I love their reunion scene.
It did not surprise me that this book was going to be so fantastically good! With every new release, Mosley has managed to weave a story that’s so good, so juicy, so real, and so sexy that it leaves you wanting me and that was the case with A Love Deferred.
I said I wasn’t going to start reading this until I’d finished a few other books I’d started on my Kindle. But after reading a few pages, I was hooked and finally finished it in two days.
The characters Meki and Cadence were far from perfect, which made them so real and relatable and the love that Meki had for Cadence was so deep and real that I felt his pain each time Cadence rejected him.
I love Brookelyn’s style of writing. I loved the way the story flowed. It’s a quick read, but with enough detail that you’re not left feeling like something was missing.
I don’t want to spoil too much, but I am happy with the way the author tied everything up in the end.
This book had EVERYTHING I love in a love story. Easily 5 stars!
