It isn’t easy being the not-quite youngest in a large family – a single pebble on a shingle beach. Liam’s home life is complicated by his step-sister’s friendship with the troubled son of a Russian billionaire, and his unknown mother has left him an inheritance which she never intended and which he cannot avoid. Liam struggles to protect his family against unseen dangers but a half-term trip up the Suffolk coast in the Chinese junk Strong Winds detonates a series of events which bring glorious discoveries and permanent collateral damage. This book is the latest in a series set in the East Coast area of England
and tackles all sorts of issues as well as being an exciting story .The characters, both adult and younger, develop and interact as their circumstances and relationships change, both for the better and the worse. Earlier books have touched on illegal immigration and the exploitation of Chinese workers being held captive in appalling conditions, and there is a fascinating mixture of criminality and compassion. This one tackles the super-rich, and Russian oligarchs with secret service thugs getting mixed up with ordinary people. It's a sort of super-intelligent thriller, with wonderful, moving characters, that should appeal for almost all ages. The earlier books are well worth catching up on.
