“One of the most comprehensive nutrition books for raising a healthy, happy family.”
This quote by Joy McCarthy on the cover of Sprout Right Family Food by Nutritionist Lianne Phillipson is absolutely true! This book is packed full of nutritional information for both breastfeeding mamas and their children (from infancy to childhood). It also includes a section for formula fed babies. It covers topics such as nutritional needs, GMO and organic foods, allergies & immune system, baby poo, vegetarian/vegan considerations, meal planning tips, how to pack lunches and much more. The first 130 pages of this book focus solely on educating the reader, and because of how information dense it is at times I did feel like I was reading a textbook. At the end of the day, however, I’d rather a book be overly thorough than be lacking in substance, and it’s very evident that the author put in a ton of time and effort to provide a plethora of scientifically sound information (she also includes a references section at the end of the book so that the reader can investigate further). As far as the recipe section goes, I LOVE IT! I can totally see myself reaching for this book time and time again as my young toddler grows. At the time of reading this book my daughter was 16 months old, and while we were already in the habit of feeding her natural, healthy foods, I was feeling like I was in a rut of offering the same healthy foods time and time again. The recipes in this book gave me the confidence and inspiration I needed to start offering a larger variety of foods. I appreciate that each recipe includes a small summary of its main nutritional benefits and that many of them include tips on how to tweak the recipe if desired. My family is vegetarian (leaning towards the side of vegan) and I was extremely pleased to see that the majority of the recipes in this book are vegetarian, and that most of the ones that aren’t are easily “vegetarianizable” by swapping out the meat for tofu of other protein alternatives. Each recipe that I have tried so far has gotten the seal of approval by all members of the family. I do wish the book had more pictures, but overall I am very pleased with this book!
