The Kurtherian Gambit #5

Niemals aufgegeben

Rate this book

Phew!

How do I review this? Let me catch my breath for a moment. Did I tell you that Bethany Anne has an alien inside her? I didn't? Oops! Well she does and his name is TOM. A shortened version of his real name which is number based. Anyway TOM loves knowledge even from the television. Creates an interesting internal struggle and immensely funny dialogue. She argues with herself a lot.

She has also found Michael. She also has a new pet. The dog who helped in the last book is now a converted huge dog she calls Aushur. The dog and BA have a moment. Who is alpha. Aushur took a while to understand but he got there.

There's lots going on. Stephen is attacked. Then they free Michael. Then they go after Anton in South America. See now maybe you'll understand the phew at the beginning.

They have also had Pete the were revamped. He can now become half man and half wolf. A comment of f@@k me sideways was mentioned.

I'll admit, it's not the best literature you'll ever read. But it's a hell of a lot of fun. It's just a great read. The storytelling is amazing and his imagination is just awesome. Enjoy!

So I am just on a run reading this series in which the content grows in wild ways and so many people are introduced that half the the time I have to so a search to remind this old brain who they are. To critique this book would give too much away and I think one likes it or doesn' care for it at all.

I still can't believe I'm reading a book about vampires!! I would type more but I have to get to book six in a hurry.

I'm officially a fan of Michael Anderle's novels. I can't seem to escape from this world that he's created and I'm regretting it.

Excellent!

Good grief, this was so exciting. No matter where they were: Miami, Costa Rica, Argentina, Germany, Las Vegas, wherever, there was never a dull moment. Something fascinating was always going on.

And the fight for who was going to lead the wolves? That was great, too. Pete and Tim nearly beat each other to death.

And getting Michael away from David? David his son who had kept him captive for centuries. Wow. Bethany Anne and Stephen made short work out of that once they found out where Michael was being kept.

And then the battle with Anton’s men who tried to take Bethany Anne’s ships, what happened to Pete was awesome, having gone into the pod-doc for a few hours.

And then Anton’s party! Just let me say Bethany Anne was a party crasher and it’s did turn bloody. It was excellent.

And NOW Adam is awake. That is really going to be brilliant.

I love this series!!

There’s no sex but lots of crazy swearing, the longest mouthful of swearwords I’ve ever heard. And the F-bomb was used 94 times.

As to the narrator: Absolutely fabulous. The whispering, yelling, mumbling, muttering, laughing, you name it and Emily Beresford does it, along with giving the players their own special voices.

Good story but.......

Seriously in dire need of a professional editor and proof reader. Exhibit A Super Intendant, using the wrong spelling, periods, commas, semicolons, etc I've read all 5 instalments ( Can't call them books because that would imply there was a beginning, middle and end) It's an odd compilation of paranormal and SciFi but it has been surprisingly good to read. I think all the characters need to be fleshed out more. They a have a of color but not much depth. You just don't know "who they are." The military aspect is pretty detailed. Maybe if the writer pent more time writing than 7 days on a book it would be a 5 star review. IMHO

Wow, if you haven't listened to this series I highly recommend it! It is amazing! I love Bethany Anne and all the characters at TQB. Superb narration by Emily Beresford (audible review).

This series is so good its hard to wait for the next book. It's full of action, butt kicking, no nonsense BS. Always something happening its a non stop ride from beginning to end.

If you like vampires, science fiction, action, fast paced fun exciting stories then this series is for you!

I have already started book 6 Under My Heel. This series is so addicting.

As for the narration, absolutely amazing! OMG Emily Beresford does such a fantastic job you just don't want them to end. She does the men's voices so good, she brings these characters to life! She has an awesome reading voice and reads with emotion as called for. Just love her!

I love at the end of these books you get a little take from Emily on how she felt about the book and what parts really stood out to her. You also get listen to the author himself give his thoughts on some things and the progress of writing this series. He is writing these books in less than 2 weeks each! He makes no apologies for writing exciting books! I love him and his honesty!

This is simply a fun action series with absolutely no pretense of being fine lit. Like most vampire and werewolf books, it is full of stereotypes and gorgeous men and women (although romance is there, it's not described beyond kissing, only alluded to). The violence and swearing would be the two gotchas for the very young of young adult - this isn't written for that genre but otherwise fits.

Although I mark down for cliff hangers - these are not as annoying as most. However, each book does not end. It always feels like putting something down mid-chapter and a bit of a surprise when you see his end notation.

I'm sure it was partially because I took a break from the series, so the characters and stories weren't so fresh in my mind, but I didn't enjoy this as much as I suspected. For all that the main character is a woman, this series seems mostly built on "Rawr toxic masculinity," violence, and insecure posturing including lots of swearing. Shrug. It's not like I was expecting a huge amount, but more nuance would be nice, to be more in the vein of other action blockbusters like Blade and Underworld.

The story continues and Bethany Anne & Co are as fouled mouthed and ass kicking as ever. I have to say that this book series has become one of my favorite urban fantasy series. It is fairly straightforward in terms of story, has great characters, has lots of no-bullshit action, there is no wimping, moaning and such like boring introspection from the main characters and has a somewhat difference mix of supernatural lore and science fiction than many books in the gengre.

Bethany Anne’s adventures continue from where the previous book ended. Her to-do list for this book only has a few items on it. Like getting the new werewolves integrated into her team, finding Michael, teaching a few ancient vampires the error of their ways, turning her favorite mutt into a suitable “supernatural” companion for the Queen Bitch, oh, and of course continue to prepare for saving the world. So just another day on the job for Bethany Anne.

As usual the characters are great. Especially Bethany Anne. The interactions are … inspired. The action is as kick ass as it should be for a Queen Bitch. We get to watch a few of the “security arrangements” that has been installed on her ships in action when a few misled souls thinks it would be a good idea to appropriate her naval transportation. Spoiler, it is a really really bad idea.

Pete has gone from being a spoiled and arrogant arse to becoming a major asset. That includes some “upgrades” to his abilities to inflict pain onto those unworthy of Bethany Anne’s respect.

The dog introduced in the previous book has become a permanent, and suitably menacing, companion to Bethany Anne.

The main story arch was moved forward in a fairly calm pace, unlike the general action which is swift and … violent, which suits me perfectly. This is a cake I want to keep eating for a long time. I have to restrain myself to read something else in between my fixes of Bethany Anne and not to binge read all the books already published so far.

Needless to say my rating for this book is a full set of stars.

And Houston we have a problem...or rather Anton and David are having rather serious problems in this newest (to me) installment of the Kurtherian Gambit. The plot is thickening nicely, and TQB Enterprises and all other associations are moving forward with the plan "Save Earth".

You learn a bit more about the Wechselbalg and their history, but not nearly enough to satisfy my particular craving of the alien history and their cultures. I crave it like a pizza when I am way too faded and shouldn't be trusted around pizza, better yet be allowed to order any...Yea, that faded.

So I have found a new and deep running love for BA and her quirkiness. That you may ask, is her love for Coca Cola and her abject horror and inexcusable anger when finding Pepsi anywhere around her, Lolol. Tom(the whiz in charge of A.D.A.M. not to be mistaken with T.O.M.) is cool in the fact he agrees with me that Mexican Coca Cola tastes way better than the plastic bottled crap you find more commonly in the states.

Ashur is adorable and super intelligent. I have to say that I might be more wigged out by how much the dog understands than anything else about him. This story really had me having mini panic attacks during a couple of close calls, but you know how those at TQB are, they never give up and they never leave anyone behind. I enjoy mostly learning more about the Etheric and how it is used and manipulated, as well as how BA matures with her control and use of the Etheric. I crave more knowledge of aliens!!!

Ding Dong Daddy is home. The reappearance of a certain patriarch has me shaking my head and pleasantly surprised. Seems he might have had some time to think about his decision. Lol

Ack! I guess for now I will just have to wait and see what is uncovered next! Seems A.D.A.M. may be making an appearance, and I have a very very big fascination with A.I.'s in general. One of my favorite newer contemporary series was about an A.I. controlling a tower of people. Anyway, I digress. I am moving on up to the next book, called Under My Heel, and I can't wait!!

good but not great

I enjoy the series, but it comes across as more of an episode of a bad sci-fi series then an actual novel. Actually it might work better if it was converted to an episodic TV show.

Too much of the story is the same bit done over and over in each book. Maybe if and when Bethany Anne gets into space and fighting aliens, there will be more to story. Right now it’s the same, bad guys do something, they are easily killed and then everything repeats. Add in of course the swearing, which I don’t have a problem with cussing, it’s that it doesn’t usually help to move the story forward. Though I will give the couple instances of descriptive alliteration that was used a good laugh along the way. At least in those couple instances it was to help the story along and give that laugh.

If I recall correctly as well, in the initial book, the Wechselbalg or Weres were supposed to be other-dimensional, possibly even magically created beings. Now suddenly we find out they were created by the bad alien Kutherians. So both sides of the alien fight have visited Earth, just to change a few humans and then left them for thousands of years. That seems lazy in the extreme. Lazy for the aliens and lazy writing from the author.

I will probably continue to read the series, because it still has a few funny bits, and at least I can finish one or two of the books in a single day, so it’s not as I’m using a lot of brain power to read this un-evolved story. It’s slightly fun and quick reading. I’d prefer a deeper story and larger vocabulary but at least it’s a freebie through Kindle Unlimited. No I wouldn’t pay for them beyond my subscription rate. I especially wouldn’t shell out extra cash for each book when the author writes so many that it’s rather insane how many are in existence already. They might be worth it if the ideas between several of the books were combined into one, but also re-written. There is too much filler in the story that’s doesn’t need to be there. A shorter and tighter job of the writing would make for a better story.

4.5 Your DNA Doesn’t Have Sensitivity In It Stars

Never Forsaken is the fifth book in The Kurtherian Gambit series by Michael Anderle.

This book is decidedly better than its predecessors for two main reasons: Michael is back and has predilection for fiesta Queens, and Anton has finally and decidedly kicked the bucket. I truly devour these small moments since Bethany Anne freed Michael, their sparring matches and what she has yet to figure out is definitely him flirting.

The attack on Stephen’s house and loss of both Scott and Juan was devastating. I was fully hoping to have them join the retinue and become a part of their world saving mission. That we are only picking up one vampire each time we do is frustrating because I want to meet many more. Which me brings me towards wondering which of her entirely human staff will make the plunge into mutated badass first.

Ashur is amazing and will definitely become more interacting as he comes into his own. That his intelligence is probably in the human teenager stage right after is evolution hopefully speaks towards him becoming much more intelligent and eventually being capable of conversing through speech. On the same path is their process to bring ADAM online and what this new AI will become and mean for their future. I wouldn’t mind another snarky (think TOM) inhuman commentator as this story progresses.

Much of what traversed in these pages brings to the forefront the necessity of branching out into working with governments throughout the world. Leading me to wonder who they will reach out to first and how this future alliance will play out.

Another excellent story!

Oh boy, I’m pretty much addicted to this story line now. I blame Stephen and his two books (which I greatly enjoyed) Etheric Recruit and Etheric Researcher; looking forward to more in that series. I read them, then found out there were several series in this universe and decided to start at the beginning. And now, I have to read them all!! Lol

As others have mentioned, the grammar is not always perfect. But, I am alright with that as I read a lot of books (285 in the one year I counted = love Kindle Unlimited!) and the creativity, smoothly flowing plot, overarching major goal, and the volume of books in this series and the spin offs are worth the trade off. Maybe I need to stop reading at some point and send in recommended corrections, but maybe after I get caught up on reading all 20 books.. :-D

Note: Definitely (creative) cursing, which I am not a huge fan of (and would not want kids reading), but it definitely works in these books and sometimes cracks me up (I was an active duty Marine when I was younger). Oh yes! There was a reference to the Corps. Oohrah!

Enjoying the series for what it is...interesting story line if not the best written books I have ever read.

I do find Bethany Anne a tad annoying at times though as she is.....

.... all powerful
.....knows best for everyone
.....is everyone's mommy and knows what is best for them
.....has to know what ever she wants about someone or they are somehow failing her and deserve her wrath
.....have I mentioned she knows best and everyone should just open up to her and tell her all their secrets then let her decide what is best for them even to the point she can make decisions about their very genes
.... and if you get a little annoyed at this well you're somehow at fault

Seriously she needs to be a little less powerful and all knowing, would make the story that much better...oh and TOM needs out of her head and I think Micheal needs an upgrade to be on equal footing with her.

I keep getting this feeling that the series will be like this with her being totally over powered and making sure no one can be her equal via controlling TOM and the med pod...

Want to give 5 stars and want to give 3. So settled for 4

There are just too many elements bouncing about in this episode for my comfort. It’s frantic and I feel as if I’ve lost half of it somehow.

Trouble is it’s a really good series so I’m going to keep reading since there are 21 base books and all the others as well that I have discovered on TKG website. Which is absolutely phenomenal by the way !

Bethany-Anne is an amazing character but in this book it felt like skimming the surface for the sake of frenetic action and I would have preferred a little more depth. I really felt as if I knew her after the earlier books but now . . . . She’s sort of drifted off a bit and it’s like a really great friend that I’ve lost touch with somehow.

I’d say keep writing but I know it’s ongoing. PS loved the Brownstone series, they led me to TKG

Thanks for continuing to put so much material out there, it’s amazing how prolific you are and how wild the story lines are.

It just keeps grabbing my attention!

I have now finished book 5 in 4 Days. Yes, I am on a binge, a safe one, but still a binge! I love that I have come late to this series and so many books are available that I can just read one after another without waiting for publication. I haven’t mentioned in previous reviews that there is a lot of cussin in these stories. It happens at appropriate moments and covers a wide range of terms. It’s also a running joke to the characters and funny as hell. Everyone trie to come up with a better string than Bethany Anne and no duplications. So be warned if that kind of language bothers you. My other recommendation is to start this series at the beginning to get the full picture. Each book has a plot line and can be read separately but the overall story is lost if you start in the middle. I’m off to book 6!

Wow!

Bethany Anne doesn't hold back when someone she cares for is in danger - or anyone under her protection, really.

After sorting out the South American issue, she's now gunning after Michael's two Forsaken sons who, she discovered, were the cause of so much death and destruction of humanity, since WW2!

She gathers her people to rescue Michael, then goes full throttle into both revenging his captivity, and giving Anton the payback he deserves for his treatment of others - I think he got off quite easy, really! Lol

I love, love, Love, this series so far, and am looking forwards to at least a couple of years worth of reading, while I discover all of the amazing characters that fill up the Kurtherian Universe.

If you've not read anything by Michael Anderle, as yet, then you are in for such a treat!!!

I stopped reading at the end of book 4, but I am back

I read Ell's three books and had to get back into Bethany Anne again. Make sure Ell keeps her series going. I plan to continue the TKG series until I am caught up. I read some of the reviews at the end of tkg05 and it's just like going to restaurant with my wife and listening to her complain about the food all night. Just eat it. Same thing about reading. Just read. If the editing and punctuation aren't bad enough to interfere with the understanding of the story get over it an read. And Michael, I try to write as many reviews as possible ,but they never as long as this one. I want to encourage the writer not add a chapter to the book. You and Ell keep it up. Ill keep buying the books. mrg

... Seriously? WTF... This series is like crack.

It’s Sunday night of Memorial Day weekend. I started this series Friday night and I’m about to pick up book 6. I’m averaging 3 hrs a book. O.o And I still can’t get enough. Somehow I’ve managed to fit in Books 1-5 while spending time with family, cleaning house, 5 loads of laundry and spending an afternoon at the lake (granted I declined the boat ride read this book on blessed silence).

Pretty sure I haven’t slept much though.

And now the tantalizing possibility that Bethany Anne might just get some romance of her own...what!!! And how can Michael have changed so drastically? Humility from stasis? And Pete? And Asher? MUST. KNOW. MORE.

Unruly teenagers and switches

Another good read but it did feel somewhat a bit of a holding read. Yes there was plenty of action but it still felt as if it was a filler to get to the main event. She has just found out that Michael is being held prisoner, her team has just gotten bigger with the new were recruits (but would they pass the mustard and be viable), the building blocks to start the AI have been laid and her new dog seems to have had a bit of a structural change. Plus more Nosferatu are coming out of the woodwork and she is learning more about were anatomy. Will she be able to get Michael free? What about his sons? Will the were's pass their training and who is tracking them?

I loved the first book of this series, so I bought 5 more to keep me busy over vacation. Unfortunately, they all disappointed me. The first book was more character driven, the remaining books relied to heavily on 3rd person summary narration to move the plot line along. Also, as the paramilitary aspect of the series became more prominent, the author leaned heavily on machismo and how legendary tough this group would become. It got repetitive and didn't feel real given the circumstances of the group. I kept reading the same "met Bethany, was inspired to be a military badass" story for each of the characters. So dull. I doubt I'll read more of this series.

Easily my least favorite of the stories so far. Not that it was bad, but a few things were really annoying and the added up to make this one not as good. The first thing that comes to mind is how the first book was all about how Michael's "family" had important people on speed dial (like the president), yet Frank couldn't stop a couple of CIA guys, disappointing way to make a scene work. The next annoying thing was Bethany Anne calling someone a slut. Sad really. Not only was it rude, uncharacteristic and undeserved, but it was an unimaginative name. She needs to drop and give 50. There are others, but this book is done and time to move on.
