In the depths of the Great Depression, desperate widow Nora Cassidy locates relatives willing to take in her and her young daughter. However, Nora and Dede must travel 500 miles to reach their destination of Jericho, Texas. Providence thrusts the mother and child together with Cliff Windom, a man who’s running for his life. Along the way, the travelers encounter a collection of quirky characters and come face-to-face with God’s unexpected plan for their lives.
Billie Houston writes Christian themed romance novels. She is a widow, the mother of three, and the grandmother of seven wonderful grandchildren. She is also a former English teacher and has worked with special needs children. Her venture into Christian themed romances began when her husband of many years fell victim to Alzheimer's. She writes romantic tales about relationships; stories that explore the problems and pleasures of living a Christian life. The plots revolve around ordinary people caught in extraordinary circumstances and faced with difficult decisions. She likes poetry, George Strait's music, old movies and Earl Grey tea. Her hobbies are reading, quilting, sewing, knitting, crocheting, taking long walks, and growing house plants and herbs.
I love Nora and Cliff, but DeDe—an adorable and precocious eight-year-old—absolutely stole my heart. The three of them form a perfect family in a very short period of time.
I enjoyed the setting, the road from Uvalde to Jericho, Texas, and the time period of the Depression. Reading about their travels made me really appreciate our modern transportation and conveniences.
The story is highly entertaining and thoroughly heart-warming.
I received a copy of the book from the author, but I voluntarily wrote the review, which expresses my honest opinion.
I loved this book. Just enough intrigue to keep you interested. A mom,A little girl and God's chosen servant. They team up and take a most exciting journey on their Jericho Road. The people they meet are unusual and as different as day and night . Billie brings out the joy of their journey . Then she shares the story of Jesus and salvation.Well worth your time to read. You may find yourself wondering which story you like best Dede's need for a dad and the questions she ask or Nora learning what God's love is.
My visualizer got hod of me and I was seeing my grandparents and parents and how much they had to deal with in the 30’s. It never ceases to amaze me how God steps In at the right time and takes over every situation I know in my lifetime the many times God has just been there Very good story. Keep them coming
Lovely! Good application of scriptures. I also loved how God continued to supply for their needs. They obeyed God's word, to love others as yourself. They expected nothing in return, but in fact, God always rewarded them. They both had 'secrets' and heartaches, but love and telling the truth conquered all the problems. I enjoyed the Characters, especially the daughter (Dede) (what a 'character!)
The first 3/4 of the book were really good, but I was disappointed in the last 1/4. It was very preachy and not as solidly written as the rest.
Interesting plot: Cliff, a preacher unjustly accused of a crime and on the run, was picked up by Nora and her precocious daughter, Dede, who were driving an old pickup to Jericho to live with her aunt and uncle.
It is so encouraging to read a book that includes scripture and gives a clear gospel message. And also upholds the concept of abstinence til after marriage. Thank you for writing this.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Nothing seemed easy for the people in this story but they stayed true to themselves and God. I loved the writing and the Christian message.
