One of the world’s best assassins left no trace behind.
Alone in an unfamiliar city, Raike finds his curiosity piqued when the body of a military steward is carried away. The only sign of murder is the victim’s last words: “If anything happens to me they’ll go after the commander next.”
Compelled to poke at an imperial cover up, Raike finds himself caught in the center of the chaos, targeted from all sides, where his presence now endangers an old ally he has been trying to avoid at all costs.
Jackson Lear grew up around the world and has developed an accent that can sometimes be described as mostly Irish, a fair whack of English, and a hint of American. That's pretty handy for someone who lives in Australia. He considers 8am to be the middle of the night, has a habit of buying more books than he can ever read, and might have a go at being Batman if his writing career never really takes off.
ONE WILD RIDE!!! Wow! Talk about a rock and a hard place. This is such a thrilling rollercoaster ride with a plethora of emotions to sort through as you follow along to see what happens next. All the twists and turns, ups and downs, ins and outs, along with a few sharp corners to trip on. This is one action packed, hard hitting, fast paced, nailbiting, spine tingling, heart pounding, pulse racing, page turning, explosive tales that captures your attention from the first sentence until the last word. No ifs, ands or buts about it. The drama, danger, mystery, betrayal, intrigue and suspense builds throughout while tension spirials as the plot thickens. The characters are written with such realism it really pulls this bad boy together beautifully. The scenes are so vividly detailed it's easy to picture each scenario as they play off one another in perfect balance. This is one series you will not want to miss. When you grab your copy grab a comfy seat, kick back and relax, because you will not stop until the last word. Jackson did an amazing job bringing this read to life. Fantastic job Jackson, thanks for sharing this bad boy with us.
It is just like I like 'em! Darkly humourous, with (or without) sex but no cheesy romance and /or lifetime movie worthy traumatized women trapped in an endless loop of abusive relationships. Just swords, magic, humor, cynicism, etc.. This series is great! Reminds me of The Black Co. minus the sappier Lady drama. Definitely worth every penny and every second spent reading it.
It's a decent story, if you're into these kinds of stories. It took me a while to get into the story. The first book was the same. It does a slow and steady rise to action and then it explodes with it. Personally, I really like Raike! He's awesome!
I loved, loved the first book but the second was SOOOOO much better. Only small gripe, this one had a few more grammatical errors that I don't remember being so prevalent in the first one.

With an assasin, death threats and more in play, Raike forms an unlikely alliance with Zara and must defend himself, Alysia and her husband from a most powerful man.
