Demons of Dunmore #1

Lord Demon's Delight

Rate this book
When she bargained with the devil of her dreams, they both found their heart's delight. Demons of Dunmore Series Lady Jessaline Nolan is as stubborn as her fiery red hair implies; thwarting her father's wishes every chance she gets. The day of her impending forced marriage proves no exception. She swears she would rather marry a Demon of Dunmore than the man her father has chosen. Lord Llewellyn Dunmore is happily unwed, as the men in his lineage have remained for generations. It's become a family tradition. But he is drawn to the beautiful damsel in distress and agrees to save her on one condition-that she willingly succumb to his every sensual demand. To his utter surprise, she agrees. While Jessaline's father schemes to bring her back by any means necessary, Jessaline and Llewellyn spend their nights in decadent delight and three rather cranky fairy-godmothers lend their magical help to the lovers. Darker secrets lurk, however, as well as a shadowy past that Jessaline is unaware of. Can the new love between Jessaline and Llewellyn survive when confronted with hidden truths? Warning, this title contains the following: explicit hot monogamous sex told in graphic language.

Disclosure-ish 1: I'd originally picked up this book in hopes of reviewing it for a sf/f erotica book blog. When "Lord Demon" turned out not to be a demon of any kind, I no longer had any reason to continue reading.

Disclosure-ish 2: Note that I did not finish this novel.

I got about 30% of the way into this novel, and got pulled out of the narrative about 50% of the time. Some serious problems:

* Shite. The male love interest swears, and his curse of choice is shite. It's not really shit if you change the vowel sound, right? Way to make him sound both both modern and wimpy. Now, you could argue (based on etymology), that he comes from a region near Germany and prefers this vowel sound in his dialect. But in that case, he'd simply use scheiss. That'll give him both location/character and keep me from thinking, "Shite? Really?"

* Weighty. Everything is heavy in the descriptive prose. There's heavy breathing, the weight of [insert noun here], and so on. Maybe we're supposed to get a feeling of gloom and oppression, but couldn't Dawn come up with a few more words?

* Cunt. Apparently, this is the sole way to refer to female genitalia. When being prim or when being dirty, when spoken by a woman or by a man, the only word is cunt. This leads to a helluva lot of repetition.

* Laughable sex scenes. When the hero makes his virgin bride orgasm by spearing her on his fingers (with no other touching), I laughed in a bad way.

Overall, I think you can see why I'm not finishing the other 70% of this novel.

A positive thing:
The male protagonist has this totally ridiculous, yet still kind of hot, fantasy about his new bride. It shows marvelously that he likes sex and has no idea what's going to make his woman tick. Great character development and story-telling!

A neutral thing:
Personally, I hate it when the Fates or the Powers That Be make appearances in stories. However, I recognize that I loved such devices when I was in middle school, so maybe my tastes have just changed too much.

This first in Dawn's Demons of Dunmore series is set in the distant past but it is not a historical romance except in terms of illustrating how women were treated and sold into marriage. It also has just a touch of fantasy to make things a little more interesting but not enough to put it in the fantasy category.

Jessaline is being forced into marriage with a man, chosen by her father, she doesn't want. When, in desperation, she shouts out that she'd rather marry a "Demon of Dunmore", a Dunmore appears in the church. She thinks he is "simply the most beautiful man she had ever seen."

Lord Llewellyn Dunmore is passing by a church on his way to meet with his favorite whore when he hears Jessaline's shouted declaration. He stops in curiosity and goes into the church. He finds himself roped into marrying Jessaline, who is nothing like his favorite type of female.

Her father is bound and determined she be wed to his choice and attempts to kidnap her to try to make it happen.

Jess is determined to be a great wife to Llew and to fulfill his every pleasure. Llew is continually delighted by Jess and even though he plans to not take her maidenhead and return her dowry to her, he is going to pleasure her until she screams his name over and over again. And he does so in some very steamy scenes, some of which are in very interesting places, that had my temperature rising. On a scale of 1 to 4, this is a 4 on the sensual scale.

While the story was not what I expected based on the title, I did enjoy this story very much.

Storyline:GOOD
Intimacy: AMAZINGLY GOOD for a historical book
Enjoyment: GOOD

Before I start this review let me point out that the title seem a bit misleading in certain ways, so if your expecting a mythological romance read, this book isn't it. There are no Demons of any sort in the book. It was still a very good read. The book also contains graphic sexual acts and language

Lady Jessaline Nolan against her father's wishes did not want to marry Timon, who the father has arranged for her to marry. The day of her marriage Jess yells to her mother that she would rather marry a Demon of Dunmore than the man her father has chosen. Lord Llewelyn hears her out burst and comes to her rescue by marrying Jessaline in exchange for any and all sexual things he wants from her, on the spot Jess agrees. ( sounds degrading, but it's not). While Jess and Llewelyn is off to his castle Jess's father tries everything to get his daughter back. Jess doesn't want to go back because her father abuses her and this is the course of action she must take.

I loved this story. There is one thing I love more than a free book and it's a free book that's good. Through out the book we get to know Jess and Llewelyn and it was good reading their chemistry as the story plays out. It wasn't just the sexual things they did but it was the book as a whole that was pleasing to read. We got to meet the brothers, Allard and Graham whose stories will be coming out next as this is book 1. The brothers surely had me entertain as well in the book. They brought good chemistry to the story. Of course the ending of the book was really interesting and leaves room for me wanting more. The end of the book leaves a sneak peek for what the next book is about.

Why did I wait so long to read this book? This seems to be a common refrain for me as of late. This was a great free read. I haven't read any historical romances in a long time. This one was great. I liked the premise and the characters were so endearing. Sadly, I can't remember the names of the main characters which is why I am rating it a 3. I know the names of the 3 "fairy" godmothers - Rosie, Pansy and Snapdragon.

Why did I like this book? I liked it because the Lord Demon grows up. His ease in falling in love with his shotgun married wife also made me like the story more. He wasn't one of those "I can't love my wife" types. He's rather a gentle soul and just so sweet. Reading this book makes me want to read the next two. I definitely have to add those to my TBR list. It seems every book I read, I end up added several more books.

I highly recommend this book to those who enjoy historical romance with some good erotic scenes.

Lady Jessaline Nolan has lived a horrible life at the hands of her father, the Lord of the House of Nolan. Jessaline lives like a prisoner in her home, and is beaten or whipped at any display of defiance. In a final display of his control of Jessaline, Lord Nolan has arranged her marriage to the bastard son of a Catholic Bishop. However much Jessaline may want to leave her father’s home, her betrothed is not a better option. He has shown himself to be equally as cruel as Lord Nolan and he will be able to hurt her in more ways than beating.

Jessaline refuses to marry Timon, and swears that she will marry a Demon of Dunmore before becoming Timon’s wife. As it happens, Lord Llewellyn Dunmore himself is witness to her vow and decides to hold her to it. Jess is immediately attracted to Llew, but his reputation as a demon doesn’t make him a much better alternative than her betrothed. She agrees to marry him only after he promises never to beat her or physically harm her. That alone makes him her best option.

Llew comes from a long line of bastards. For many generations, the men in his family have refused to marry, even though they have fathered many sons. Rather than take a wife, these men have always chosen a life of drinking and whoring instead. Llew is the first man in his family to wed, and now he is saddled with a complete stranger who isn’t even his type. In spite of the many reasons he should not be with Jess, he finds himself uncontrollably attracted to her. Will the attraction between Jess and Llew grow into a real and lasting love?

While Jess’s father and fiance scheme to steal her back by any means necessary, there are magical beings from the fairy relm working behind the scenes to protect the couple. The fairy are not known to the humans, but their influence cannot be denied.

Make no mistake about it, this book is not for the prudish reader. The sex scenes are frequent and highly detailed. However, the sexual encounters occur only within monogamous, consenting relationships. These scenes are not one-dimensional; they are intertwined with romance, passion, and love. If I’m going to really enjoy an erotic novel, these are key points for me.

Something else that is crucial to me in an erotic novel is that the story and characters are of the same quality that I would expect in any other novel. This book met all of my expectations in that regard. Jessaline’s character is smart, brave, and determined. Llew is a sexy bad boy who is being transformed by his love for his wife. Reformed bad boys are my favorite heroes in love stories, and Llew was no exception.

The only part of the story that I thought was a little weak was the ending. It wraps up really quickly and there is no epilogue, so I finished the book feeling like I got robbed of my happily ever after. I also wished for a little injection of humor in parts of the story, particularly from Llew’s two brothers. Lastly, even though the fairy involvement is scattered throughout the story, I would have loved to read more about these characters and their world.

Recommended for fans of historical and/or paranormal erotica.

I expected to hate this book. I can't remember where I even heard of it. Was it on Twitter? A blog? Samhain's webpage? Can't recall. But, I expected to hate it. The cover did not help. I thought it would at least be good for some laughs, right? Turns out, it was pretty darn good!

It started out with a terrorist fistbump to William Shakespeare's Macbeth. The whole witches watching, plotting and scheming. Elitist though it may be, literary reference made me more curious and interested in the book. It got my attention. And, not only that, but the witches were funny. They had personality, AND got the story going.

The voyeuristic aspects of the story were also interesting. Some people may find it creepy, I didn't. I liked how Dawn made sure to always let the reader know the couple being spied on were fully aware they were being watched. She didn't hit you over the head with it, but it did make the whole thing less stalkerific.

Hero and Heroine were both well developed, and the secondary characters were rounded as well. The plumbing of the book (grammar, sentence structure, spelling) was also very good. It seems almost shameful that it needs to be mentioned, but there are some really badly edited books out there!

Which leaves the plot. There were some holes. Tne end of the book was rushed. Not so much the romance between H/H, but the backstory. Jessaline's father was a son of a bitch, we got that. Why did it take him so long to get to her for confrontation? He knew where she was. If he was waiting so long to set up things with the King, he didn't do such a hot job. And if he's so good at machinations, why did it all end so badly? It seemed a bit glossed over towards the end. I understand that wasn't the "real" story, but I wanted to know details! Dawn had done a good bit of world building and that's why I wanted to know more.

All in all, it was a good book. I don't think romance fans will be disappointed.

Early on, I thought this might be a paranormal romance - how cool would it be if the hero was a real demon? But it turned out to be a medieval (?) historical/fantasy romp. I'm guessing the historical period based on clothing and architecture alone, and the setting is vaguely English, but otherwise the period details are a casual matter at best. A few possible anachronisms regarding inaccurately liberal attitudes and speech are easily overlooked considering the mild fantasy aspect (Fate-like flower fairies are in charge of keeping the main characters' destinies on track) and the tongue-in-cheek style of the author.

The periodic interludes with the fairies are adorable and hilarious. They help set a devil-may-care atmosphere that reminds readers that nothing about this story is to be taken seriously: it's a lark, pure and simple. Therefore we can rationalize giving in to the temptation to just go along for the sexy ride.

Make no mistake, this story relies heavily on explicit sex. Nevertheless, the plot scaffolding upon which the love scenes hang, while unoriginal, is entertaining enough to keep you reading. We're also introduced to a slew of intriguing secondary characters who will populate subsequent installments - yay!

The story boils down to this: Llewellyn Dunmore is a quintessential bad boy with an interesting backstory. He manages to be charming enough to be forgiven for how quickly and easily he falls for the heroine, Jessaline. And Jess, with her history of surviving abuse at the hand of her father, is alarmingly trusting of a complete stranger with a horribly wicked reputation. But this isn't deep literature. Dawn's humorous prose, fast-paced narrative, and steamy love scenes coaxes us to suspend if not belief, then at least most of our realistic skepticism. Despite your misgivings, you'll root for Llew and Jess's happiness by the end, if not at the beginning.

This book ended up being very different from what I thought it would be. I mean, I see the word "demon" and it conjures up images of hellbeasts and leathery wings. It turns out that it wasn't that type of demon, at all. Just a carousing, lusty trio of brothers who are know for their excessive appetites and are reviled by most of the villagers. I like leathery-winged demons, so this might have been a great disappointment but it turned out to be a fun little book with a touch of the hot sex that I so adore.

There's nothing terribly earthshattering about this book but I liked the characters and thought the plot was very entertaining. I liked that Llew tried to be noble. I liked that he was there for Jess every time she needed him. I liked that he tried to give her a choice as to whether she wanted to stay tied to him. I don't know. It was fun. It was a nice way to distract myself from real life for a bit. In fact, the only thing that might have made it better would have been if Llew and his brothers had been honest to God demons.

As an aside, this book has one of my favorite familial themes - that family isn't about blood or social standing, but about those that are willing to stand beside you when the going gets tough. The Dunmore brothers are all bastards with different mothers yet they're willing to fight to the end to help one another. Jessaline's family is wealthy and high born and yet Jess has spent her entire life suffereing abuse and neglect at their hands. I like the contrast between the one family that should have been divided by their different parentage but who stuck together through thick and thin and the other that had everything and treated their daughter like a pariah. It worked for me.

Lord Demon's Delight
3 Stars

Synopsis
Jessaline Nolan will do anything to escape the marriage her father has arranged for her even if it means marrying one of the Demons of Dunmore - three brothers renowned for their debauchery and wicked ways. In accordance with his family tradition, Lord Llewellyn Dunmore is unwed and happy to remain so until he overhears Jess's claim and decides to rescue the damsel in distress. Will Llew and Jess's growing love survive the secrets, lies and machinations of her malicious father.

Review
Quite an entertaining read.

Despite the title, there isn't a demon in sight and this turns out to be an atypical historical romance with some very minor paranormal undertones in the form of three fae matchmakers.

The basic premise is somewhat far-fetched and the plot nothing that hasn't been done before, but there are some engaging scenes and characters and some intense suspense toward the end. The romance between Llewellyn and Jessaline is sweet and steamy, and the addition of the snippy fairies and Llew's original family is a highlight.

The writing is alright, although there are some incongruities between the historical time period and the language and social norms.

Overall, a light and fluffy book with some explicit scenes but nothing too over the top. The characters are interesting enough to continue reading the series.

This is a free read, which I picked up thinking it was a mythological/lore type of romance book. The book does speak of demons but they're not really demons. There are 3 witches that are on a mission to help bring Jess and Llew together, but they are such a minor part of the book, yet still provides some interest. Other than that it really is just a plain romance book. It was still good anyways. I was a little shocked at the lewd sex scenes at first, but that was because they were completely unexpected on my part. They do add to the book though. There is a long excerpt for the next book at the end, so this is a fairly short read. I did enjoy the book even though it was not what I expected.

This was FREE on Kindle and I needed a light pleasure read to kind of prepare my brain for some heavier stuff. That being said this one was pretty graphic, a lot more graphic than the girly books I normally read. From voyeurism to a weird mom situation (I'm not quite sure yet what that was about) things did not occur in quite the conventional way. There wasn't a whole lot of romantic suspense between the lovers in this book either they kind of just fall into each others' arms and stay there; the whole book. Which is fine but the secondary conflict wasn't srong enough to give this book the push and pull it needed to be really good. So in the end it was just a light fluffy entertaining read (if a little explicit). The price was perfect however.

If you're looking for historically correct then look elsewhere. What you get is what is says on the box, the Lord has many delights and most of them have something to do with body parts.
This is rompy romance, basically the dapper hero with the ginormous pulsing...umm crown jewels, saves the beautiful virgin bride. Strangely enough said virgin has no problem whatsoever with voyeurism, getting era specific lap dances and/or exhibitionism. All that as a dutiful blushing virgin of course.
There is some odd finger sniffing tactics going on that I found bizarre to say the least. The main character was quite obsessed with his genitals, they ached, itched, throbbed, were aflame and spoke to him on many an occasion.
It is a quick non-demanding read

Erhm...this was a lot more explicit then I expected.

I felt like it was just trying to add in TOO much, with a lot of crude language. There was:
-bastard (noble, what?) children (x3)
-other bastard children (x2)
-whoring sons (x3)
-whores (too many to count)
-whores who were nobles (x1)
-lesbian mothers
-an attempted forced marriage
-beaten women
-an evil father
-a marriage to save the girl from the attempted forced marriage
-a lot of "note quite" sex
-voyeurism of another couple being intimate to turn them on during the "note quite" sex (x2)
-an abduction
-attempted rape
-attempted incestuous rape
-stabbings
-oh, and apparently fairy godmothers playing matchmaker

The book was entertaining, the plot had a nice bit of suspense, and the transitions were done in a unique manner; that all said, the reader was kept at a full arms-length, some dialogue was stilted and the characters were not quite flushed out enough. The sex scenes are earthy and frank with very mild D/s elements, voyeurism. Dawn does a nice job of titillating the reader, but the distance from the characters makes it seem less engaging. Surprising sweet for something that keeps hinting at darker elements.

Historical romance. Very sweet and fun to read. No demons of any kind (sorry to disappoint), but a very good tale nonetheless. I loved the characters. Llew was incredibly entertaining to read and Jess had a fire like no one else, very genuine and courageous, a little impetuous too while Llewellyn was flirtatious, funny and fair. Both with an amazing inner strength. Really a pleasure to read. I did find this book to have a enormous amount of sex scenes for an historical but I can't say I was truly sorry.

I was so excited to read this book! And I did enjoy the erotic writing.....however I would say that it dominated the writing. The story was simple but enjoyable. I think I would like a more balance between the erotica and story. I was almost untouched by the end of the book because the love seance where uncreative in language and location/ theme But I do plan to read the other books is this series. Just not directly after.

There are no demons in this book. The title and description are misleading in that regard. Nothing paranormal about it which was fine though it made the initial premise a little confusing. Why would some roguish dude just up and marry some chick because he happened to be passing by? I thought there was going go be something more mystical involved there but no. Anyway, if you can get past that, it's an enjoyable enough read. Even more so because it was free. :p

This was a super steamy erotic historical fictional story that I enjoyed to the fullest.

I like the part where there's three "fairy godmothers" who help out along the way. It sort of throws in a little curve to the story but they're fun and enjoyable.

The characters were fun and there were some twists I did not see coming. Lots of erotic sex scenes that may not be for everyone.

Jess and Llew we so wonderful and so likable. I was drawn into the story from the very beginning. It was a wonderful mix of comedy and high drama. And even with the help of fairies it still takes a strong man and a strong woman to make things work out for everyone. I will be looking for the rest of this series.

A romping rolling funny tongue in xxx book that was a quick good read.. A few flaws along the way with the fates, and how they worked with characters .. The way the fates worked you would have assumed there was separate book on just the fates. The characters were a little shallow, but for the price and the genre a fun read.

I give this 3.5 stars!

I liked this book, especially because the hero of the story sounded like such a sexy beast! I loved his naughty side and his sense of humor and his total devotion to the heroine from the word GO. It was a good read although the lack of breaks between scene changes was a bit jarring to me. I am considering reading the next book in the series, eventually.

Llewellyn Dunmore is a bastard son who is known as the Lord Demon. As he is riding near a church one day, he hears a woman's voice refusing to marry and claiming that she would rather marry the Demon of Dunmore. He goes in and is instantly attracted to her. He marries her on the spot.

at least the author made up a medieval country, but she also made the characters use language that wasn't exactly current in this book. i know i'm being a mite picky but....at least this book was free--i would have been royally ticked off if i had actually spent good money on it

This was not at all what I was expecting. The story itself was quite thin, and seemed to only exist in order to hold together the graphic sex scenes. Honestly, it wasn't so much a romance as it was porn.

This is the first book of four and a great start to her stories. It is funny and hot and show how a one-second chance incounter can change ones life forever. Be warned you will want to read all her stories after picking this one up, however these are not for under 18 readers.

This is a romance book with a great amount of sex between the 2 main characters, Lord Dunmore and Jessaline Nolan, later to be Lady Jessaline. It is not for the faint of heart readers. There are 3 other books to follow which I have not read yet but did order the 2nd one already.

Enjoy!

Hooray for a book wherein women support and aid other women! Hooray for damsels that can help themselves out of their distress with a little cunning and ingenuity! Still wish the heroine had been the one to finish things off at the end, but I'll take what I can get.
