Women Invent!: Two Centuries of Discoveries That Have Shaped Our World by Susan M. Casey catalogues inspiring stories of women inventors taking the reader through the process of inventing—from coming up with an innovative idea to having it patented, manufactured, and sold. People in general are more likely to see the need for a new product to improve a process or product in areas that they are familiar with. Women have an abundance of useful inventions that have made major improvements in the home as well as family farms because of their familiarity working in those environments. Of course women are well-represented in many other fields where they have familiarity as well. The author shares information about the patent process explaining what is required to file for a patent for a new idea. Very interesting and well written.
Although I realized this book was written for upper elementary / lower middle school students, I felt that it was not the best written or best organized book. It did catalogue many women inventors and help the reader understand the patent process and alternatives to the patent.
I didn't realize when I bought the book that it was written for ages 9-13, but I enjoyed the read nonetheless. I would highly recommend this for the suggested age group.
