Police Chief Tess O’Rourke’s small town is still reeling from a devastating fire when the FBI asks for Could she shelter a witness in a high-profile human trafficking case? Initially reluctant to put the townspeople of Rogue’s Hollow at risk, Tess is swayed after she sees Pastor Oliver Macpherson’s genuine conviction to rescue those in need, a trait in him she’s coming to love more each day.
Tess’s fledgling faith is tested when crews of workmen from out of town come in to assist with the fire cleanup and she worries that one of these strangers might shine a light on things best kept hidden. Neither she nor Oliver knows that Rogue’s Hollow is already home to a suspect from a twenty-five-year-old murder case . . . and someone is taking cold aim at those Tess is sworn to protect.

Good series! Enjoyed the character growth in Tess throughout and the inclusion of her dad's wisdom as she worked. Glad I have a backlist of books by the author.
Well, I don't know what I'm more excited about - this book or the new author I just found. This is my first book by Janice Cantore and I'll immediately be checking out her other novels. I am one that loves suspense/mystery novels and loves Christian novels. She has combined two of my favorite genres into one!!!! I just love it!! And I really enjoyed this book!
In real life there is the struggle between good and evil. Between justice a criminal receives in court and whether we feel criminals deserve justice in the eyes of God. Cantore tackles all of that in a very realistic way but also in a format that has an interesting story with undertones of an uplifting, spiritual message. It's a ripped from the headlines, Law and Order storyline that also has romance, faith and redemption included. And while there are Christian elements in this book, this is a very gripping suspense novel with interesting twist and turns that will keep you guessing.
It's a strong storyline with even stronger character development. I think Oliver was my favorite character. I loved how he showed the strengths of grace, mercy and hope you expect to see in a Pastor, but also showed his vulnerable side of doubts and questions the rest of us have about life and love. This is a heart warming story while also being an action packed story at the same time.
This book is a part of a series, but I think it can be a stand alone book. I haven't read the other books in this series but plan on doing so. Janice Cantore has found a new fan of me in her work. I look forward to reading her other novels and the next one in this series. If you haven't read this author before, I encourage you to check her out. You won't be disappointed.
My thanks to Janice Cantore, Tyndale Publishing and Netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
'There is no matter of degree to sin. All of us have our own baggage.'
Janice Cantore brings us book 3 in her Line of Duty series and it's wonderful. Cantore is a retired police officer and it shows in her books. I love that she brings her expertise to her writing. I was drawn in from the very first and could not tear myself away.
Police Chief Tess O'Rourke is over a small town in Oregon that is suffering in the aftermath of a devastating fire and then the FBI shows up on her doorstep asking for help in hiding the witness to a brutal crime lord's human trafficking case. Tess doesn't want to put the people of her tiny hamlet in harm's way, but agrees after seeing the pastor's conviction to help those in need. Tess and Pastor Oliver Macpherson have been seeing each other and he is helping her with her newfound faith.
Things soon heat up with crews of workmen come from out of town to help with the fire clean up and a vicious killer is one of the crew, unbeknownst to Tess or anyone else. He will stop at nothing to find this witness and kill her. Then there is that 25 year old murder case that already home to Rogue Hollow and Tess fears for her town nearly every moment.
Cantore manages to keep the reader completely engrossed in this story, which plays out like an episode of Law and Order, only better. I loved this book and look forward to more from Cantore.
*My thanks to the publisher for a preview copy of this book via Net Galley. The opinions stated here are entirely my own.
With the grit and honesty hailing from her twenty-two year police force career, Janice Cantore crafts another page-turning suspense. The third and final book in her Line of Duty series and I think it's the best. Take heart if you haven't read the first two books -- you can definitely enjoy this one as a standalone read but, oh my, if you've been following Tess's career as Rogue Hollow's police chief you will enjoy Cold Aim that much more.
A complex suspense plot with a real sense of urgency made this a breathtaking page-turner (well, compulsive listen, since I enjoyed the audible edition.) So many diverse threads that are gradually woven together into a heart-pounding crescendo at the end. My pulse is still thready from the after effects. :-)
Tess is continuing her faith journey, ready to commit to baptism even as she struggles with some of the nitty-gritty details. Like letting go and letting God. She's been micro-managing her life for so long, bearing the stress of worry and guilt, it's hard for to hand it all over to Him.
And then there's the complication of the police chief being romanced by the pastor much to the dismay of some disgruntled congregants. And Oliver is having difficulties dealing with the dangerous aspect of Tess's job. I'd say the recurring themes of trust and prayer play over and over in both their lives throughout the course of this story. I was as on edge over their romance as much as I was over the suspense!
Although I was tired, I didn't sleep because I had to find out what was happening next in this story. For that, I award this book 4 stars.
A pastor and a cop forge an unconventional alliance in the midst of a human trafficking scandal that implicates an elusive politician named Cyrus Beck. Cyrus has others do his dirty work for him, the best of which is ICE, a cold and calculated killer renown for his ability to seduce targets and blend into his surroundings like a chameleon
Cyrus has a problem. One of his victims escaped and produced evidence that can finally put him behind bars. He needs her eliminated before she can testify against him. So, ICE goes after her, and another mystery unfolds.
Great characters, plot, and pace . This was my 2nd book by this author, and I plan to read more of her other stories.
I liked Tess and Oliver, our romantic couple, but I don't like them together. They are obviously a mismatch riding off their emotions. I agree with other parishioners that Oliver, a pastor, should choose somebody else. Tess is a smart cop but I get the impression that she is divorced, rendering her unqualified to be married again, especially to Pastor ( if her ex-husband is still alive). The book wasn't transparent about these facts, they were implied. Even if Tess was free to marry, I am still not convinced about her and Oliver
"It's not weak to admit the truth to the one you love."
Rogue Hollow Police Chief Tess O'Rourke is a woman who never backs down, especially when it comes to protecting her constituents. Following an horrific area forest fire, she has barely had time to lift evacuation orders when the F. B. I. pays her a surprise visit; they have a young witness whom they can't even guarantee that the Federal Marshalls can protect; the stakes are so high and the corruption is so deep. Can they bring her to O'Rourke's town?
When Tess chooses principle over protection, she risks making the biggest mistake of her career; will her decision dismantle a ruthless international trafficking organization or will her actions severely compromise the safety of her citizens? Tess's growing faith in God stands to be challenged, and her growing attachment to Pastor Oliver Macpherson, severely tested.
Janice Cantore’s third novel in her Line of Duty series, Cold Aim, provides a fascinating view of law enforcement and crime in the 21st century. The author’s experience as a 22-year veteran of the Long Beach Police Department in California gives readers an authentic and realistic glimpse into the dangers that law enforcement face as they risk their lives daily to protect the citizens of this country.
Cold Aim can be enjoyed as a stand-alone novel since the author provides insight into events that occurred in the small town of Rogue’s Hollow and Police Chief Tess O’Rourke’s history prior to this novel. Readers may enjoy reading the entire series to get a better understanding of Tess O’Rourke’s background and previous occurrences in Rouge’s Hollow, but it is not essential for understanding the storyline in Cold Aim.
Police Chief Tess O’Rourke’s journey continues in Cold Aim as she assists the FBI in hiding a witness in a human trafficking case, despite a huge safety risk to her small town. With all the evil she has seen during her career in law enforcement, Tess’s faith continues to waiver, but her close friend and confidant, local pastor Oliver, believes in the power of prayer and the ability for people to change after accepting the grace of God. In this action-packed novel, Janice Cantore immediately captures the attention of the readers and keeps them highly invested in the storyline until the very last page. Cold Aim is recommended for readers who enjoy realistic suspense novels filled with inspiration, hope, and light on the romance.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Tyndale House Publishers and was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine.
Whew! What a terrific finale to the Line of Duty series! This was packed full if drama, suspense and action.
The sex slave theme is not uncommon in books today, but I really liked this author's emphasis on the evil in a person, or people who have no decency, humanity, or conscience about taking the innocence of another human and to use them in such vile ways. Utterly perverse.
This is about a woman who has spent two decades hiding from that evil, and about a sleepy town completely unaware of the malevolence about to descend upon it.
There were lovely faith messages throughout, which lets me know Ms. Cantore doesn’t just throw in a bone to satisfy the Christian reader. And she does it with such grace. Well done.
COLD AIM is another nail-biting suspense in this series set in a small town with Chief O'Rourke trying to protect those she loves and do her job while again facing evil. Readers will enjoy the suspense, sweet romance, themes of faith and redemption, and these lovable characters. An excellent addition to the series!
I've enjoyed this series so much! I loved the small town, with all its charm and the tight-knit community with its own problems. I especially loved Tess and Oliver and how their relationship kept developing. Tess is just such a fabulous character! I fell in love with her in the first book, but she's still learning and she's still human. I also loved Oliver! He has such a good heart, but also isn't perfect. I appreciated his admiration and love for Tess as he tried to figure out what he should do about their relationship. The romance was definitely not the focal point of the story, but it played a huge role and I liked how it was weaved through everything that was going on.
The suspense was pretty much nonstop, with danger looming constantly. The criminals in this story were brutal and cold. Human trafficking is such a huge issue and this story definitely poured some light on that and the evil people who gain from it. It's a tough subject to face, even in a story. Things got so crazy that I wasn't sure what was going to happen. There were a few places I had to suspend belief (like at the end when someone shows up when that wasn't really realistic), but it still worked out overall.
I also really appreciated how the author handled the inspirational elements of this story. I could feel Oliver's calming pastor voice, his wisdom, but also appreciated that he had his own insecurities and doubts. I liked how some of the characters were questioning and trying to work through their doubts and the hope that faith gave them. I also liked that the story didn't portray redemption as something that can just wipe away what has been done, that God does love all His children, but that there are still consequences that must be met. A somewhat balancing act between justice and mercy.
In the end, was it what I wished for? I've been so excited to read this and it didn't disappoint! It's a story full of suspense, danger, faith, great characters, and romance. Definitely recommended to Christian romantic suspense readers!
Content: Some difficult subject matter regarding human trafficking, but non-descriptive, and violence. Source: I received a complimentary copy from the publisher, which did not require a positive review nor affect my review in any way.
"Cold Aim" is a Christian suspense novel. It's the third book in a series but works fine as a stand alone. One person's actions during a suspenseful event from the previous novel were briefly "spoiled" in this one, so you may wish to read the novels in order.
Tess lives out justice as the police chief, but she's increasingly attracted to the mercy and compassion shown by Oliver. Pastor Oliver admires Tess' courage, but he's also frighten he might lose her to death like he did his wife. Everyone else seems to feel that a romance between a pastor and a cop will never work. Tess deals with these doubts while trying to keep the town safe. A fire sweeps through the area and the crew hired to clean-up afterward contains at least one criminal. A poacher is illegally killing animals. A couple who lost their house in the fire regularly argues--loudly--and Tess fears it may turn into domestic violence. And Tess is asked to help a human trafficking victim who agreed to testify and bring down a trafficking ring, but she needs to be secretly hidden until the trial because assassins will probably be sent after her.
So, constant suspense! The characters acted realistically, and I cared about what happened to them. I liked Tess's compassion and determination to keep her town safe and Pastor Oliver's willingness to show God's love to people, even those that other people thought were hopeless. Several characters question why God doesn't stop every bad thing from happening and if there are people so evil and hard that they're beyond hope. There was no sex or bad language. Overall, I'd recommend this engaging, suspenseful story.
I received this book as a review copy from the publisher.
Cold Aim, by Janie Cantore, is book three in the Line of Duty series. This book is awesome! The characters are well defined, following through from the previous two books in the series. The story is well told and very believable. The story is full of action and suspense. Rogue Hollow is suffering from a terrible fire when the FBI asks for one of their witnesses in a high profile case to be kept there for safety. When the witness sneaks into town and is seen by one of the extra workers in the area, her cover is blown. The person after her will stop at nothing to get her. The small local law enforcement are working around the clock to stop him. The romance between Police Chief Tess O'Rourke and Pastor Oliver Macpherson is questioned by some of his parishioners, and even themselves. Friends don't think they are a good match, that they are like oil and water. So they have to work to prove friends wrong. I have enjoyed this whole series. The stories are written so good, with enough background information, that they do not have to be read in order to follow. The author is a retired police officer, and it shows in the realistic stories that she writes. This one focuses on human trafficking and contains numerous murders and several different crimes needing to be solved. I enjoyed how the internet and hacking is used as a mean for finding information. I appreciate the Christian aspect to the story as well. It is light and not preachy. Tess's father was quick to turn to prayer in times of difficulties, and this is something she is learning. I would highly recommend this story to anyone who enjoys police stories. I received this book as part of a fellow bloggers give away. I was not required to write a review.
This books was such a good ending to the series. I am so happy that Tess and Oliver are finally together it’s so sweet. I loved watching there love grow. Chevy and what happened to her and the whole thing was so scary because human trafficking actually happens. I loved that faith place took on Chevy. I figured out pretty early that Liz was heather. But I liked that in the end heather helped Chevy who had been victimized by beck as well. I was also happy that they found Janine safe after they found ken dead because ice killed him after he help him get to safety. I was on the edge seat when beck came into the office and said he had a detonator for a bomb in he was going to blow up the town if Tess didn’t take him to Chevy. So Tess was a fast thinking and Oliver praying when they got there the girls were in a panic room and watching cameras and realized it was Beck and Tess was able to get him pinned but he did push the button on the detonator but they were to far away for it to work. Once again I am so happy that Tess and Oliver are together and so happy. I was also happy that Tammy survived. When Ice came as the agent to Oliver’s house I was also on the edge of my seat when Tess showed up but was so happy to see Oliver be brave and remember that his ribs were bruised from being shot and he elbow him but Oliver did get clipped by the bullet but ice died. I loved this series all the way around. All the books were so good.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I really liked this novel. I don't know which was better, the plot or the characters. The plot could be out of today's newspaper. The FBI is investigating a man trafficking young women and desires to shelter their star witness in a safe place. Chief Tess O'Rourke is unsure her remote Oregon town is the right place. She finds out all too soon that her instincts about a dangerous situation were all too true.
And the characters. I really liked Tess, chief of police. She is dedicated to her job of protecting others. Her responsibility weighs heavy on her. She will not let a crime go until she has given it all she can. She's been hurt in the past and has issues about trusting God.
Oliver is such a great pastor, comforting the devastated and faithfully vising a prisoner. He knows no one of beyond redemption and sees hope when others only see hopelessness. What faith he has in God's redeeming grace and love.
I like that the hint of romance in the novel is subtle and takes a back seat to the danger and suspense permeating the novel. There is a strong spiritual aspect to the novel, fitting well into the progressive action.
A relevant plot, great characters, a good deal of intrigue and suspense, an unexpected twist at the end, all the elements of a good romantic suspense.
I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.
Evil exists and can destroy everything in its path. It hides in plain sight and doesn't care who is harmed. Police Chief Tess O'Rourke understands that. She's determined to keep the people of Rogue's Hollow safe. When she's approached about helping hide a Federal witness, she's worried. No one will be safe, but she wants a deadly predator to pay for his crimes. Preacher Oliver Macpherson lives his faith. He's there to help those who need him. He cares for Tess and worries about her safety. These two care for each other, but their professions seem to separate them. I liked that Tess and Oliver work hard to understand each other. I couldn't put down Cold Aim. The story is filled with nonstop action and unexpected twists. The enemies are cold, deadly killers. I was shocked by their actions. I found the topic of human trafficking difficult. Also the murders bothered me. The killer's action was ice cold. I was glad the author didn't go into detail. Janice Cantore did an excellent job bringing all the pieces together. Her characters were well written, the dialogue was sharp and to the point. I'm enjoying this series. I received a copy of this book which I voluntarily read and reviewed.
This is the third novel in the Line of Duty series that focuses on Tess O’Rourke, the new police chief in small town Rogue’s Hollow. It’s probably best to start with the first book (Crisis Shot), so you can catch up on how Tess becomes the police chief.
In Cold Aim, Tess finds herself dealing with protecting a witness in a human trafficking investigation. Cold Aim delivers the suspense, as the bad guys in this novel stop at nothing to track down this witness. All of your favorite Rogue’s Hollow characters are back, but readers get introduced to the mysterious Livie Harp, a prepper with her own fortress of solitude, as she steps in to defend the Hollow. While fueled by action, this novel delves into Tess and her new relationship (don’t want to spoil it in case you haven’t read the first in two in the series). The romance is sweet and deals with how complex Tess’s job is while she balances her professional and personal life.
I definitely would check out Cold Aim for this summer’s new release. If you haven‘t started the series, there’s no better time to start than right now since Cold Aim comes out 7/9.
Returning to Rogue Hollow with Tess and Oliver made for quite an amazing ride. In Cold Aim, Janice Cantore took readers on a wild ride through the world of running away from human trafficking. While this topic has become quite popular in suspense novels lately, Cantore actually created a story about the characters on the run about to squeal on their captors. The action started in the first chapter and did not let up. Cantore stuck Tess in a number of horrible situations and allowed her to sink or swim. I liked spending more time with Tess and, after reading all three novels, seeing her change from the character we encountered in the first series. The romance between Oliver and Tess does change and have a little bit of romance, but nothing too gushy. Nothing close to a contemporary romance take on the love. The only downside to the entire novel, in my opinion, is what will happen to Tess and Oliver. Does she learn to balance police work and her love of the pastor? Does she cling to her faith more? Hopefully, Cantore creates something that have them appear in another story later in their lives. I really enjoyed this installment, and I really can't wait to see what comes next from Janice Cantore.
I received a complimentary copy of Cold Aim by Janice Cantore from Tyndale Publishing, but the opinions stated are all my own.
Mystery, suspense, Mild Romance; Series but stand alone read; Christian faith elements This was a fun 3.5 read for me. Tess, her hard work to save people in the face of the fire, the hermit, the victim, the Pastor, the other small town community members struggling in the face of the fire, and in the case of the mystery and troubles with all of the crimes, problems and concerns in the community. The plus is seeing both Tess and Oliver figure out their hopes for their developing relationship. Loved how the clues were gradually uncovered, seeing the criminal's minds and thoughts, the past crimes and background that all come together for Chief O'Rourke to solve the crime and rid their community of the criminals. The wide scope of the crimes, the people affected, and the small town pulling together made for a perfect suspenseful read. The side characters are intriguing and full of 'character'. Great writing and perfect read for me! I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review, my opinions are my own.
I love suspense and mystery and this author does a great job of keeping the action moving and the tension tight. Police Chief Tess O'Rourke is a tough, committed officer with a soft spot for the local Pastor. When the FBI brings a witness in a high-profile trafficking case to be hidden away in Rogue's Hollow until the trial, Tess is less than happy but determined to make sure the girl is protected and safe. A believable struggling romance, well rounded-characters, and bad guys who are truly bad to the bone, make for a great read. I loved the continuing relationships between characters from the first books in the series. Author Janice Cantore never disappoints.
How can one teeny tiny Oregon town attract so much trouble? But it most definitely leads to engaging and pleasurable reading.
Janice Cantore’s third and final installment in The Line of Duty series brings readers back to Rogue’s Hollow where Police Chief Tess O’Rourke’s relationship with God had developed (as has her relationship with the town pastor Oliver McPherson).
When a federal agent approaches her about sheltering a witness who can take down a big gun in a sex trafficking sting, Tess isn’t certain it’s the best choice for the town that has just settled from a corrupt law enforcement officer, a drug take down, and a recent forest fire.
Cold Aim is a fantastic continuation of Tess’s new life in Oregon, her growth as a LEO and a person, and the trust she’s gaining from the residents of Rogues Hollow (even though there are still plenty of those who aren’t afraid to express their negative opinions). The action and suspense are top notch and the tie-in to an older crime is seamless.
Disclosure statement: I receive complimentary books from publishers, publicists, and/or authors, including NetGalley. I am not required to write positive reviews. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.
Police Chief Tess O'Rourke and her small town are still reeling from the fire that swept through leaving devastation in its wake.
Meanwhile the FBI asks Tess to shelter a witness in a high profile sex trafficking case, who might be the key to bring down the whole operation. When a clean up crew comes to Rogue's Hollow to help with the after effects of the fire, one of the new clean up crew members makes Tess uneasy. Will she be able to help catch the traffickers before it's too late?
Janice Cantore always delivers, and this is no different, bringing excitement to the small town of Rogue's Hollow once again. Tess has newly come to faith, and her friendship with Pastor Oliver is starting to become something more. She befriends tech genius and hermit, Livie after the fire.
Tess is dedicated to her job, at times she is head-strong and stubborn, she likes to do things for herself, and doesn't always ask for help when she could. She is strong and good at making heat of the moment decisions. I liked how her friendship with Oliver, and her faith have grown throughout this fantastic series. She is grounded and well-rounded person.
Oliver is a strong man of faith, he is a good listener, and tries to always give people a chance. He stands up to members of his congregation who don't approve of his relationship with Tess. He doesn't ever stop trying to help people and show them the love of God.
Livie is a very intelligent young woman, with strong convictions, who likes her solitude. She is very brave and steps out of her comfort zone to help Tess, and she starts talking to Oliver about difficult things in her life.
Overall, a thrilling and compelling read from beginning to end. Strong complex characters that you can cheer for the whole way through, fantastic plot, I loved returning to Rogue's Hollow yet again. An explosive conclusion to a heart pounding series, strong faith also is a big part of Tess and Oliver's life. Highly recommend the entire series!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Lindsey pretty much stated my thoughts very well: "Well, I don't know what I'm more excited about - this book or the new author I just found. My thanks to Janice Cantore and Tyndale Publishing and Goodreads for a copy of this book.
The third installment in the Line of Duty series gives readers the best yet with more drama, action, adventure and romance than anything Cantore has written to date!
After a wildfire ravages part of Rogue Hollow, Police Chief Tess O’ Rourke tries to get her town back on its feet when the FBI shows up asking Tess to harbor a witness in a human trafficking case. Tess’s gut tells her that this isn’t the best idea, the town is still reeling from the last traumatic event and to put them in harm’s way again goes against her better judgment. When Pastor Oliver Macpherson, the man she has been seeing, continues to be an example of showing compassion to those in need, Tess decides to help the young girl. This isn’t the first time Rogue Hollow has been home to sheltering a victim of human trafficking; unknown to anyone in town a woman has been keeping her own secrets for years and may prove vital in helping Tess with this request from the FBI. Tess must decide who she can trust and what the right thing to do is in order to keep everyone safe.
Janice Cantore uses her years of experience with law enforcement to craft a wonderfully written tale that readers can both relate to and enjoy each character and the situations they tackle. Each book that Cantore writes gets better: better characterization, better story lines and better romance and action. I have enjoyed the story arc of Tess and the people of Rogue Hollow. Tess has evolved into a chief the town can trust after proving herself time and time again. She may have come into town as an outsider but now feels this is truly home and the people around her are family. Her relationship with Oliver has played out in a manner that feels real and timed at a good pace, it’s not rushed and doesn’t drag. Over the course of these novels Cantore has been able to develop these characters, even the minor roles into ones that readers are invested in and want to see pull through in the tough times. My one criticism for this book would be the villain, Ice. At times he was referred to as Ice and other times as Royal. Ice was the nickname he got, and I didn’t have a problem with that, I had a problem with the lack of consistency throughout, the name was switched sometimes within the same paragraph and that was confusing. Once the nickname was given I wish it would’ve stayed consistent. Other than that, the read was very enjoyable, and I can’t wait for Cantore’s next great adventure. I recommend this to fans of Cantore’s books as well as anyone that hasn’t read any of her books. Even though this is the third in the series it could easily be read as a standalone.
I received a complimentary copy of this title from the publisher. The views and opinions expressed within are my own.
Deb’s Dozen: Human Trafficking Comes to Rogue’s Hollow. Chief Tess O’Rourke—On the Job!
Janice Cantore’s Line of Duty Series intrigued me from the first book. In Police Chief Tess O’Rourke, she created a likeable, fallible character you’d love to have as a best friend. And the love interest in the series, Pastor Oliver Macpherson, is equally charming and affable.
Cold Aim, the third book in the series, brings conflict to the growing relationship as they both struggle with job responsibilities vs. personal desires. The reader can easily see both sides of the disagreements. But, they’ll still root for both characters while understanding the emotions involved.
Tess, while recovering from a devastating fire in the area that has disrupted the Rogue’s Hollow, faces a tough decision. The FBI asks her to shelter a high-profile human trafficking victim. However, Tess doesn’t want to put “her” town at risk after the fire. When she sees how Oliver genuinely cares for the woman, she reluctantly agrees. The couple running the local shelter for abused women agrees to take care of Chevy.
At the same time, the FBI endeavors to solve a decades-old cold case. They think this involves the work of the same man who trafficked Chevy. As they look for links, danger lurks. When strangers come into town to work on the fire cleanup crew, Tess wonders if all are legit or if they are looking for Chevy. The action gets fierce, the convolutions fascinating, and the growing love between Tess and Oliver complicated. Four stars—you’ll enjoy reading Cold Aim.
To quote her bio, “Janice Cantore is a retired Long Beach police officer who now writes suspense novels to keep readers engrossed and leave them inspired. Her twenty-two years of experience on the force lend authenticity to her stories.” All of her books, nine in all, encompassing three series—Cold Case Justice, Pacific Coast Justice, and Line of Duty—all feature Tess O’Rourke.
Tyndale House Publishers gave me an Advance Reader Copy of Cold Aim, but I was in no way obligated to write a review.
Cold Aim is a Faith based crime thriller set in the Rogue Valley outside Medford Falls, OR; it is an exciting sit-on-the-edge-of your-seat story focusing on the issues of international human trafficking and the work of national and local law enforcement’s to intervene in putting a stop to its evil.
With roots 25 years in the past, Police Chief O’Rourke and her small force, working with the county sheriff, the FBI, and the local pastor, Oliver Macpherson, would be responsible for rescuing two local women as well as a score of others located around the country and the world. The reader quickly learns that human trafficking is not just a problem elsewhere or on the international front, but will sometimes need to be dealt with in the local community as well.
But the solution would not come easy - the death of both the innocent and the guilty would provide milestones toward the arrest and capture of the crime family’s long time head. Their work would also lead to the freedom of many (both physically and spiritually) as they moved closer to apprehending those responsible for stealing the childhood of so many. In the midst of the story both Chief O’Rourke and Pastor Macpherson would be facing their own spiritual crisis as they sought to follow the path God laid out in front of them.
The only flaw I found in the book is that occasionally the main characters would reflect on events found in earlier books in the series. This in no way detracts from the current story or leaves the reader at a loss, but a footnote pointing the reader to the earlier books might alert the current reader that the earlier stories are available and can also be read.
For the reader looking for an exciting week of reading, Cold Aim might just fill that need. This book has a place on the shelf of the church library and the local community library’s shelves.

BOOK BY: Janice Cantore Cold Aim returns to Chief Tess O’Rourke’s sleepy little Oregon town shortly after the drama of book 2 in the Line of Duty series. Tess and Pastor Oliver MacPherson are embarking a new relationship, though it seems the congregation and everyone close to them thinks they are like oil and water. Determined to give their relationship a chance, it is more than tested throughout the pages of the latest installment of Line of Duty. The prologue is gripping as a young woman, a star witness, is being hidden until a notorious criminal goes to trial – in a few days’ time. Knowing the family she is staying with is likely in danger, the young woman plans to leave, and unexpectedly witnesses the gruesome murder of the entire family. Fast forward 25 years – The FBI are on the verge of putting another kingpin of crime – this time human trafficking – away for good, but there’s one problem. Their star witness needs to be hidden, and hidden well. Tess O’Rourke doubts the wisdom in hiding the young victim in Rogue’s Hollow, but agrees to the pressing need. What follows are mysterious disappearances, murder, attempted kidnapping, and more, including a mysterious connection to the missing star witness of 25 years ago. The pages are filled with drama, excitement, and not without a strong faith element. Issues of redemption are tackled head on, but not in an overly preachy manner. This is a suspense novel, not without descriptions of crime (murder, kidnapping, or the mindset of a calculating criminal), but the central characters deal with issues of faith and how to reconcile God’s provision of grace, mercy, and ultimate forgiveness in the truly evil people of this world. A perplexing thought, indeed. I received an ecopy from the publisher through NetGalley. All opinions expressed are my own.
Romance and suspense at its best, from the opening volley of gunshots to the closing kiss! I prefer the suspense over the romance, but a little romance plays well in the story. I thought the second book in the series was loaded with suspense and action but it just keeps getting better. During my career, I experienced some long days on occasion, but I never could have kept up with Sheriff Tess O’Rourke. Whereas my work was primarily using my mind, hers involved using her mind and physical abilities. But even if I could have kept up with her, I don’t like the thoughts of being shot at. She seemed to charge right into the face of whatever was there. The action was non-stop and her days just ran together, or maybe it all happened in one day. Well, maybe not, but she barely got any downtime. I thought Pastor Mac was a great part of the story. While the sheriff sought to bring people to justice, he was busy trying to help people find peace and comfort through his ministrations. He not only was available for his church people, but even sought to help those on the wrong side of the law. The fact that he and Tess seemed to be drawing closer added a bright spot to the story. Tess has just renewed her faith after tossing it aside as a teenager when her father was killed in the line of duty. She believes some people are simply beyond redemption, but Pastor Mac disagrees. I enjoyed the way their discussions of opposing viewpoints helped to get a solid lesson delivered to the readers. One of his best lessons was to pray first. Too many of us pray when all else fails. If you have not read the first two books of the series, I recommend you read them in order as each one builds on the previous one.
Police Chief Tess O’Rourke’s small town is still reeling from a devastating fire when the FBI asks for help: Could she shelter a witness in a high-profile human trafficking case?
Another great book by Janice Cantore. Tess is on the verge of getting baptized when a fire sweeps through town. Everything is put on hold until the fire is under control and clean up is under way. In the midst of all this she is hiding a witness in a high profile case. Gunmen are sent to take out the witness and anyone that gets in their way. Tess and Oliver's relationship is tested when he questions why she has to take so many risks. As the story comes to a head, lives are at stake.
This is not an edge of your seat suspense. But it is a great mystery. I highly recommend you read it. This is the third book in the series. It would be beneficial to read the first two books but not necessary.
I received this book from Tyndale Publishing via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I was not compensated in any way.
This was totally awesome. From the very first scene of the cop and his family getting killed, this book is packed with drama. With Ice on the hunt for Chevy, you knew he was going to find her at the Women's shelter. But all the killing Ice does just to try and get to Chevy was a lot. When he does go with Gage to the shelter to try and get Chevy, it was great how Livie was there with her shotgun and blasted Gage and injured Ice. Thankfully, after Ice shoots Tami and throws her in the river, she survives her trip down the river and is found the next morning. She ends up in the hospital unable to speak but she recovers.
Then there was the side case of Garrett and Janie and how Janie is kidnapped but Blakley is found dead so the hunt is on for Janie.
When Cyrus shows up at the police station and has his detonator with him, Tess and Oliver are in a bind and you wonder how they will get out of that. Livie's place was totally awesome - like a whole compound locked up tight. Livie and Chevy hide so Beck can't find them and it is a little anti-climatic how Tess gets Beck in custody so easily but that was okay. Knowing that Livie is really Heather and all charges against her are dropped since she only witnessed the murder of the cop and his family and wasn't the one that killed them. Livie takes Chevy underneath her wing and is going to help her get educated. Steve Logan shows interest in Livie/Heather which is a fun twist to the story. But the ending - Tess and Oliver making amends and telling each other they love the other. Lots in this story about prayer and trusting in God. Nice to read that in a book about crime. Just a great book!!!

Cold Aim by Janice Cantore did not disappoint. Janice is one of my go to authors. I also enjoyed this cover; I didn’t realize Oliver was so cute
Tess is a great character. I have enjoyed seeing her grow through the series. In Cold Aim she is helping the town recover from a devastating fire and trying to protect a federal witness.
The hermit in town was my favorite secondary character in this book. She was tough and prepared. My favorite scene was with her at the women’s shelter. She took charge.
Cantore adds those elements to a book to make it real. The daily struggles of a police officer both at home and on the job. I enjoy the comradery between the fellow officers.
The book has the action and adventure you love in a great suspense novel and the thought provoking elements that you come to expect from Cantore. Do police officers and clergy make a good couple?
I highly recommend the book. It can be read alone but I would recommend the series.
Sexual content - this is not really a romance even tho the feelings between Tess and Oliver are moving forward. He does hug and kiss her and having feelings for her. Violence - 2.5 Janice does a good job of keeping out the details but human trafficking is sad and disturbing, we have victims of is in this book
