ಸಾಮ್ರಾಜ್ಯ, ರಾಜ್ಯಾಢಳಿತ, ಯುದ್ಧ ಎಲ್ಲದರ ಮತ್ತೊಂದು ಮುಖಕ್ಕೆ ಕನ್ನಡಿ ಹಿಡಿದಂತ ಕೃತಿ. ಜೀವನದಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾವುದು ಮುಖ್ಯ, ಗುರಿ ಏನು ಎಂದರೆ ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಬ್ಬರ ಉತ್ತರವೂ ಭಿನ್ನವಾಗಿರಬಹುದು ಆದರೆ ಹೊತ್ತು ಮುಳುಗುವ ಮೊದಲು ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಬ್ಬರು ಬಯಸುವುದೂ ನೆಮ್ಮದಿಯ ಬಾಳು, ಸುಖವಾದ ಸಾವು ಎಂದು ಮತ್ತೊಮ್ಮೆ ನೆನಪಿಸುವ ಕೃತಿ. ಹಳೆ ಮೈಸೂರು ಶೈಲಿಯ ಆಡುಭಾಷೆ ಓದಲು ಶುರುವಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಕಷ್ಟವಾದರೂ ನಂತರ ಹೊಂದಿಕೊಂಡೆ. ನಾನು ಓದಿದ ಕೃಷ್ಣಮೂರ್ತಿ ಹನೂರರ ಮೊದಲ ಕೃತಿ ವಿಷೇಶವಾದ ಭಾಷೆ, ಜನಪದ ಸೊಗಡಿನ ಸಾಲುಗಳು, ಭಿನ್ನ ಕಥಾಹಂದರ ಇವೆಲ್ಲ ಕಾರಣಗಳಿಂದ ಇಷ್ಟವಾಯಿತು.

ಕಾವೇರಿಪುರದಲ್ಲಿ ನೂರಾರು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸಿದ ವೀರಗಲ್ಲಿನಿಂದ ಪ್ರಾರಂಭವಾಗುವ ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಆ ಕಲ್ಲ ಮೇಲೆ ಕೆತ್ತಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ ಗಡ್ಡಧಾರಿ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯೊಬ್ಬನ ಆತ್ಮಕಥೆಯಾಗಿ ಬಿತ್ತರಗೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತದೆ. ದಳವಾಯಿಯಾಗಿ ಟಿಪ್ಪುವಿನ ಆಸ್ಥಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಸೇವೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿದ ಆ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯ ಯೌವನದ ಏರು ದಿನಗಳು, ನಂತರದ ಇಳಿಮುಖವಾದ ಬದುಕು, ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ತಾನು ಗಳಿಸಿದ್ದೇನೂ ತನ್ನದಾಗಿ ಉಳಿಯುವುದಿಲ್ಲವೆಂಬ ಕಹಿ ಸತ್ಯವನ್ನು ಸಾರುತ್ತದೆ ಈ ಕಥೆ. ಕೃಷ್ಣಮೂರ್ತಿ ಹನೂರರ ಕಥೆ ಹೇಳುವ ರೀತಿಗೆ ಶರಣು. ಜೀವನದ ಸ್ವಾರಸ್ಯವಿಷ್ಟೇ ಎಂಬ ಸಂದೇಶವನ್ನು ಕೊನೆಯವರೆಗೂ ಹೆಸರಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಅನಾಮಿಕನಾಗಿಯೇ ಉಳಿಯುವ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯೊಬ್ಬನ ಆತ್ಮ ಕಥೆಯ ಮೂಲಕ ಮೂಲಕ ಓದುಗರಿಗೆ ಮುಟ್ಟಿಸಿದಂತಿದೆ.

ಇತಿಹಾಸವೆಂದರೆ ಯುದ್ಧ, ಗೆದ್ದ, ಸೋತ ಇಷ್ಟೇ ಎಂದರೆ ತಪ್ಪಾದೀತು... ಅದರ ಹಿಂದಿನ ಕರಾಳತೆಯೇ ಇತಿಹಾಸದ ತಿರುಳು ಎಂದು ನಂಬಿದ ನನಗೆ ಖಂಡಿತ ಇಂತಹ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳು ಇಷ್ಟವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಒಬ್ಬ ದಳವಾಯಿ ಹೆಸರೇ ಹೇಳದೆ ತನ್ನ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಾನೆ... ಅವನ ಜೀವನದಲ್ಲಿ ಯುದ್ಧ, ಸಾವು, ಮೋಸ, ಕಾಮ ಬಿಟ್ಟರೆ ಏನು ಕಂಡಿರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ... ಅಂತಹ ಒಬ್ಬ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ ಜೀವನದ ತನ್ನ ಇಳಿವಯಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಸುವ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನ ತುಮುಲವೆ, ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಸಾರಾಂಶ.... ಇದು ಸುಮಾರು 1740 ರಿಂದ 1800 ರ ನಡೆಯುವ ಕಥೆ.... ಲೇಖಕರು ಹಲವಾರು ಜಾನಪದ ಕಥೆಗಳ ಮೂಲಕ... ಮೂಲ ಕಥೆ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಾರೆ... ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಒದೆಲೇಬೇಕಾದ ಕೃತಿ....

ಈ ಕೃತಿಯನ್ನು ನನಗೆ reddit ನಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾರೋ recommend ಮಾಡಿ ವಿಧಾನಸೌಧ ಪುಸ್ತಕಮೇಳದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊಂಡು ಇಂದು ಓದಿ ಮುಗಿಸಿದ್ದಾಯಿತು.

ಈ ಕತೆಯನ್ನು ಓದಿ ಮುಗಿಸಿದ ನಂತರ, ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಶೂನ್ಯಭಾವ ಕಂಡಿತವಾಗಿ ಕಾಡುತ್ತದೆ. ನಮಗೆ ಬಹಳ ಆಪ್ತರಾದವರನ್ನು ಕಳೆದುಕೊಂಡಂತೆ ಬಾಸವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಇತಿಹಾಸದ ರಾಜ ಮಹಾರಾಜರು ನಾಯಕ ಪಾತ್ರಧಾರಿಗಳಾಗಿ ಕಾಣಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಕಥೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಜನರ ಜೀವನಶೈಲಿಯನ್ನು ಅಷ್ಟು ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ಚಿತ್ರಿಸಲು ಅವಕಾಶವಿರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಆ ಕೊರತೆಯನ್ನು ನೀಗಿಸಲು ಇಂತಹ ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ ಕಾಲಘಟ್ಟದಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆದಂತಹ ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಳು ಮತ್ತಷ್ಟು ಬರುವುದು ಮತ್ತು ಓದುಗರು ಪ್ರೋತ್ಸಾಹಿಸುವುದು ಅತಿ ಮುಖ್ಯ.

ಟಿಪ್ಪು ಸುಲ್ತಾನನ ಆಪ್ತ ಸಿಪಾಯಿಗಳಲ್ಲೊಬ್ಬನಾದ ದಳವಾಯಿ ತನ್ನ ಕೊಳೆತು ನಾರುವ ಜೀವನದ ನೈಜತೆಯನ್ನು ಚಿತ್ರಿಸಿರುವ ರೀತಿ ಅದ್ಬುತ. ಇದು ನಮಗೆ ಮುಟ್ಟಿರುವ ಒಂದು ಕಥೆಯಾದರೆ, ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಮುಟ್ಟದೇ, ಬರೆಯಲ್ಪಡದೇ, ಯಾರಿಗೂ ತಿಳಿಯಲ್ಪಡದೇ ಅದೆಷ್ಟು ಕಥೆಗಳು (ಜೀವನಗಳು) ಇತಿಹಾಸದಲ್ಲಿ ಹುದುಗಿಕೊಂಡು ಎಂದಿಗೂ ಸಿಗದಂತೆ ಕಳೆದು ಹೋಗಿರಬಹುದು. ಇಂತಿಹಾಸವೆಂದರೇನೆ ಇಂತಹ ಅಸಂಖ್ಯಾತ ಕಥನಗಳ ಗುಚ್ಛ…

ಈ ಕಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಎಷ್ಟು ನೈಜತೆಯಿದೆ, ಎಷ್ಟು ಕಾಲ್ಪನಿಕವಾಗಿದೆ, ಎಷ್ಟು ತಿರುಚಲಾಗಿದೆ ಎಂಬ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗಳು ಕಥೆ ಓದಿ ಮುಗಿಸಿದ ನಂತರ ಅಪ್ರಸ್ತುತವಾಗುತ್ತವೆ. ಎಷ್ಟೋ ಸಲ ನಮ್ಮ ಕುಟುಂಬದವರ ಅಥವಾ ನಮ್ಮ ಸ್ನೇಹಿತರ ಜೀವನದ ನೈಜತೆಯೇ ನಮ್ಮಿಂದ ದೂರ ಉಳಿಯುವುದುಂಟು…

ಹಾಗೇ ಸುಮ್ಮನೆ ಕೈಗೆತ್ತಿಕೊಂಡು ಓದಲು ಕುಳಿತುಕೊಳ್ಳಿ, ಇತಿಹಾಸದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಕುತೂಹಲ ಅದಾಗೆ ಓದಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತದೆ.

ಕೃಷ್ಣಮೂರ್ತಿ ಹನೂರರ " ಅಜ್ಞಾತನೊಬ್ಬನ ಆತ್ಮಚರಿತ್ರೆ" ಈ ವರ್ಷದಲ್ಲಿ ನಾನು ಓದಿದ ಉತ್ತಮ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಳಲ್ಲೊಂದು. ಬಹಳ ವಿಭಿನ್ನವಾದ ವಸ್ತು ವಿನ್ಯಾಸವನ್ನು ಈ ಕೃತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಾವು ಕಾಣಬಹುದು. ಯಾವುದೇ ನಿರೀಕ್ಷೆ ಇಲ್ಲದೆ ಓದುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಶುರು ಮಾಡಿದ ನನಗೆ ಬಹಳ ಆಶ್ಚರ್ಯವನ್ನುಂಟು ಮಾಡುವಂತಹ ಬರವಣಿಗೆ ಮತ್ತು 18ನೇ ಶತಮಾನದ ಸ್ಥಿತಿಗತಿಗಳು ಒಬ್ಬ ದಳವಾಯಿಯ ಆತ್ಮಚರಿತ್ರೆಯ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಓದುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿತು.

ಇದು ಟಿಪ್ಪು ಸುಲ್ತಾನನ ಕಾಲದ ಒಬ್ಬ ದಳವಾಯಿಯ ಆತ್ಮಚರಿತ್ರೆ. ಶೀರ್ಷಿಕೆಯೇ ಸೂಚಿಸುವಂತೆ ದಳವಾಯಿಯ ಹಾಗೂ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ಯಾವುದೇ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳಿಗೆ ಹೆಸರಿಲ್ಲ. ಚರಿತ್ರೆ ಎಂದಾಕ್ಷಣ ನಮಗೆ ನೆನಪಾಗುವುದು ರಾಜ ಮಹಾರಾಜರ ದಿಗ್ವಿಜಯಗಳು, ವೈಭೋಗಗಳು. ಆದರೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಲೇಖಕರು ಬದಲಾದ ಚರಿತ್ರೆಯ ಪರಿಕಲ್ಪನೆಯನ್ನು, ಚರಿತ್ರೆ ಮರೆತುಹೋದ ದುರಂತ ಅಂತ್ಯ ಕಂಡ ದಳವಾಯಿಯ ಆತ್ಮಚರಿತ್ರೆಯನ್ನು ಸೃಜನಶೀಲ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯದ ಮೂಲಕ ಕಟ್ಟಿಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ಸ್ವಂತ ಹೆಸರಿದ್ದರೂ ಅದನ್ನು ಹೇಳದ, ಹೆಸರುಗಳಿಸಲು ಅನೇಕಾನೇಕ ಶತ್ರುಗಳ ಹೆಸರಿಲ್ಲದಂತೆ ಮಾಡಿದ, ತನ್ನ ಹೆಸರು ಖಾವಂದರ (ಟಿಪ್ಪು) ಮನದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಚ್ಚೊತ್ತಲಿ ಎಂದು ನಾನಾ ಸಾಹಸಗಳನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿದ, ಕಟ್ಟಿಕೊಂಡವಳು ಎಸರು-ಅನ್ನ ಉಂಡಳಾ?..ಇಲ್ಲವೋ? ಎಂದು ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ವಿಚಾರಿಸದ, ರಖಾವು (ಇಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡವಳು) ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡವಳ ಎದುರು ತನ್ನ ಹೆಸರನ್ನು ಮಣ್ಣಾಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡ, ಹೆಸರುಗಳಿಸುವಂತ ಕಾರ್ಯಗಳಾವು ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮನನ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡ, ತನ್ನದಲ್ಲದ ಊರವರು ಕೊಟ್ಟ "ದೇಸಪ್ಪ" ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರಿನಿಂದ ಕರೆಯಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯ ಸ್ವಗತವೇ ಈ #ಅಜ್ಞಾತನೊಬ್ಬನ_ಆತ್ಮಚರಿತ್ರೆ.

17 ನೇ ಶತಮಾನದ ಅಂತ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು 18ನೇ ಶತಮಾನದ ಆರಂಭದ ಕಾಲ. ಟಿಪ್ಪು ಸುಲ್ತಾನ್ ಮತ್ತು ಬ್ರಿಟಿಷರ ನಡುವೆ ನಡೆಯುವ ಕೊನೆಯ ಯುದ್ಧದ ಸನಿಹ ಕಾಲ. ಆ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಟಿಪ್ಪುವಿನ ಆಪ್ತರಲ್ಲಿ ಒಬ್ಬನಾದ ದಳವಾಯಿಯ ಕಥೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಅನಾವರಣಗೊಂಡಿದೆ.

ಇತಿಹಾಸಕ್ಕೆ ಸಂಬಂಧಿಸಿದ ಅನೇಕ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಳಿದ್ದರೂ, ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯು ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟವಾಗಿ ನಿಲ್ಲುವುದು ತನ್ನ ಕಥನ ಕ್ರಮದಿಂದ.

ಯುದ್ಧಗಳು ಹೇಗಾದವು? ಯಾರ್ಯಾರು ಶೌರ್ಯ ಪ್ರತಾಪ ಮೆರೆದರು? ಎಷ್ಟೆಷ್ಟು ಕೋಟೆಗಳನ್ನು ಗೆದ್ದರು? ಎಂಬ ಉಲ್ಲೇಖಗಳನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟು, ಯುದ್ಧಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಮುಂಚೆ ಮತ್ತೆ ಯುದ್ಧದ ನಂತರ ಆಗಿರುವ ದುಷ್ಪರಿಣಾಮಗಳ ಬಗೆಗಿನ ವಿಚಾರಗಳಿವೆ. ಅವುಗಳ ಉಲ್ಲೇಖವೇ ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಅಂಶಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು.

ಒಬ್ಬ ದಳವಾಯಿಯಾಗಿ, ಖಾವಂದರ ಆಪ್ತನಾಗಿ, ದುಷ್ಟತನ, ಅಹಂಕಾರಗಳ ತುಂಬಿ ತುಳುಕುತ್ತಿರುವ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯಾಗಿ, ಅವನಾಗಿಯೇ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡ ಅನಾಹುತಗಳಿಂದಾಗಿ ಮತ್ತು ಅವನಿಂದಾದ ಅನಾಹುತಗಳಿಂದ ಇತರರ ಮೇಲಾಗಿದ್ದ ಪರಿಣಾಮಗಳಿಂದಾಗಿ ಅವನು ತನ್ನನ್ನೇ ಕಂಡುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಾನೆ.

ಯುದ್ಧ ಮುಗಿದ ಶ್ರೀರಂಗಪಟ್ಟಣದಲ್ಲಿ, ಟಿಪ್ಪುವಿನ ಸಮಾಧಿಯನ್ನು ಮತ್ತು ತನ್ನ ಹೆಂಡತಿಯನ್ನು ನೋಡುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಹೊರಡುವ ಅವನು..
ತನ್ನ ನೆರಮನೆಯ ವಿಧವೆಯಿಂದ, ಯುದ್ಧದ ಭೀಕರತೆಗಳು ಹೇಗೆ ಹೆಣ್ಣಿಗೆ ದುಃಖದ ಕಡಲನ್ನೆ ಕೊಡುಗೆ ನೀಡುತ್ತವೆ ಎಂದು ವಿವರಿಸುವ ಭಾಗ ಮ���್ತು ತನ್ನ ಹೆಂಡತಿಯ ಮನೋಭೂಮಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅವನಿಗೆ ಇದ್ದಂಥ ಸ್ಥಾನ, ಅವಳಿಗುಂಟಾದ ಕ್ರೂರ ಮರಣದ ಪರಿಚಯದ ಭಾಗಗಳು ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಕಾಡಿದಂತವು.

ಒಂದು ಕಡೆ ದಳವಾಯಿಯ ಹೆಂಡತಿಯ ಅಪ್ಪ ಊರಿಂದೂರಿಗೆ ಅಲೆಯುತ್ತ, ನಾಮ ಕೀರ್ತನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಹಾಡುತ್ತ, ದೇವರ ಚಿತ್ರಪಟಗಳನ್ನು ಕೊರಳಿಗೆ ನೇತು ಹಾಕಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದ ಎಂದು ಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಚಿತ್ರಪಟಗಳು ಶುರುವಾದದ್ದು ಹದಿನೆಂಟನೇ ಶತಮಾನದ ಮಧ್ಯಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಇದನ್ನು ಹೇಗೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ತಂದರು ಎಂಬ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ ಮೂಡಿತು. ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಅಷ್ಟು ಅಹಂಕಾರಿಯಾದ ಅವನು ಊಟಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಮದುವೆ ಮೆರವಣಿಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕುಣಿಯುತ್ತಾನೆ ಎಂಬುದು ಸರಿ ಹೋಗಲಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ಅನಿಸಿತು.

ಬೇಗಬೇಗನೆ ಓದಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ, ಕುತೂಹಲವನ್ನು ಕಾಯ್ದುಕೊಳ್ಳುವ, ಇತಿಹಾಸವನ್ನು ಬೇರೆ ಕೋನದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳುವ ಒಂದು ಉತ್ತಮ ಕೃತಿ.

ಕೆಲವೆಲ್ಲ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳ ತಡವಾಗಿ ಓದಿದಾಗ 'ಯಾಕೆ ಇಷ್ಟು ತಡವಾಯಿತು?' ಅಂತ ಹಳಹಳಿಸಿದ್ದಿದೆ. ಇದು ಅಂತಹ ಒಂದು ಪುಸ್ತಕ. ಟಿಪ್ಪು ಸುಲ್ತಾನನ ಸೈನ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ದಳವಾಯಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದವನ‌ ಸ್ವಗತ. ಕತೆಯ ಹೆಣಿಗೆಗೆ ಯಾರಿಗೋ ಸಿಕ್ಕ ದಫ್ತರವನ್ನು ಇನ್ಯಾರೋ ಪ್ರತಿ ಮಾಡಿದಂತೆ ಹೆಣೆದಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಒಂದು ಸ್ವಗತ ಹೇಗಿರಬೇಕೋ ಹಾಗಿದೆ‌. ನಿಮಗೇ ಗೊತ್ತಲ್ಲ ಒಂದು ವಿಷಯದಿಂದ ಸುರುವಾಗಿ ಇನ್ನೊಂದಕ್ಕೆ ಮತ್ತೆಲ್ಲೋ ಹೋಗಿ ಮತ್ತೆ ಮೊದಲಿಗೆ ವಾಪಸ್ ಬರುವುದು.

ಎರಡು ಮುಖ್ಯ ಅಂಶ ಗಮನಿಸಿದ್ದು.
ಈ ದಫ್ತರದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳಿದ್ದವು ಅಂತ ನಿರೂಪಕ‌ ಹೇಳಿ, ಆ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳ ವಿವರಣೆಯನ್ನು ಕೊಡುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಚಿತ್ರಗಳ‌ ಹಾಕುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಇದು ಬಹಳ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿದೆ. ಯಾಕೆಂದರೆ ಚಿತ್ರ ಹಾಕಿದರೆ ಅದು ಹೇಳಹೊರಟ ಅನೇಕ ಅಂಶಗಳು ಗಮನಕ್ಕೆ ಬಾರದೆ ಹೋಗುವ ಸಾಧ್ಯತೆ ಇತ್ತು.
ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಅಂಶ ಭಾಷೆಯ ಬಳಕೆ. ಎಷ್ಟು ಸಹಜವಾಗಿತ್ತು ಅಂದರೆ ಯಾರೋ ಬರೆದದ್ದು ನಾವು ಓದುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇವೆ ಅನ್ನೋದೆಲ್ಲ‌ ಮರೆತು ಕತೆಯ ಪರಿಸರದಲ್ಲಿ ನಾವೂ ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷಕರಾಗಿ ಬಿಡುತ್ತೇವೆ.

ನಾನು ಇದನ್ನು ತಡವಾಗಿ ಓದಲು ಕಾರಣ ನನ್ನ ಅಜ್ಞಾನ. 'ಠಕ್ಕನೊಬ್ಬನ ಆತ್ಮಚರಿತ್ರೆ' ಮತ್ತು 'ರೇಷ್ಮೆ ರುಮಾಲು' ಎಂಬೆರಡು ಒಂದೇ ಕತೆಯ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳ ಓದಿ ಇದೂ ಅದೇ ಅಂದುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದೆ. ಅದಾದ ಬಳಿಕ ಟಿಪ್ಪುವಿನ ದಳವಾಯಿಯ ಕತೆ ಅಂದರೆ ಪುಸ್ತಕದಲ್ಲೆಲ್ಲ ಅವನ ವೈಭವೀಕರಣ ಇರಬಹುದು ಅಂತ‌. ಹಾಗಿಲ್ಲ.
ಅದಲ್ಲದೆ ಹಿಂಪುಟವೂ ದಾರಿ ತಪ್ಪಿಸುವಂತಿತ್ತು. ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ನಾಲ್ಕು ಪುಟ ಓದಿ ಹಲವಾರು ವಿಮರ್ಶೆ ಬರೆದಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಅನ್ನುವ ಖ್ಯಾತಿಯ ಅನಂತಮೂರ್ತಿ 'ಲ್ಯಾಟಿನ್ ಅಮೆರಿಕದ ಕತೆಯ ಹೊಳಪು' ಅಂತ ದಾರಿ ತಪ್ಪಿಸುವಂತೆ ಬರೆದದ್ದು; ಗಿರೀಶ್ ಕಾರ್ನಾಡ್ ಹೊಗಳಿ ಬರೆದದ್ದು(ಟಿಪ್ಪು ಕಂಡ ಕನಸು ಬರೆದಿದ್ರಲ್ಲ ಹಂಗೆ) ಇವು ಕಾರಣ.

ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಯಾವತ್ತೂ ಮುನ್ನುಡಿ, ಹಿನ್ನುಡಿ ಓದಿ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಓದಲು ಹೋಗಬೇಡಿ. ಅವರ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ನಿಮ್ಮದೂ ಆಗುತ್ತದೆ ಅಷ್ಟೇ! ನಿಮ್ಮ ಪಾಡಿಗೆ ಓದಿ. ಆಮೇಲೆ ಬೇಕಾದರೆ ಅವನ್ನು ಓದಿ. ಇದು ನನ್ನ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ.

ಇನ್ನು ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕದಿಂದ 'ಆಮ್ರ' ಅನ್ನುವ ಹೊಸ ಪದದ ಪರಿಚಯವಾಯಿತು.' ಸಾರು' ವಿಗೆ ಪರ್ಯಾಯ ಅನ್ನಬಹುದಾದ ಪಸ ಅದು.

ಇದು ಕತಾವಸ್ತು.ಮೊದಲೇ ಹೇಳಿದಂತೆ ಟಿಪ್ಪುವಿನ‌ ಕೊನೆಗಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಶುರುವಾಗುವ ಕತೆ. ಅವನ‌ ಕೋರಿಕೆಯಂತೆ ಜೀವಂತ ಹುಲಿಯ ಹಿಡಿದು ತರಲು ಹೋಗುವ ದಳವಾಯಿ. ಅವನೇನು ಸಾಚಾ ಅಲ್ಲ. ಅವನ ಸೈ ನಿಕರೂ ಸುಸ್ತಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ರಜೆಯಿಲ್ಲದ ಯುದ್ಧ , ಪ್ರಯಾಣ ಇತ್ಯಾದಿಗಳಿಂದ. ಇನ್ನು ಈ ದಳವಾಯಿಗೆ ಪಾಪ ಪುಣ್ಯಗಳ ನಡುವಿನ ಗೆರೆ ಮಸುಕು ಮಸುಕು. ‌ಯುದ್ಧದಲ್ಲಿ ಲೂಟಿ‌ ಮಾಡಿದ‌‌ ನಗ, ಹೆಂಗಸರ ಲೆಕ್ಕ ಕೊಡುವಾಗ ಅವನು ಲೆಕ್ಕ ತಪ್ಪಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ.‌ಆದರೆ ಟಿಪ್ಪುವಿನ ಎದುರು ತನ್ನ ಸ್ವಾಮಿನಿಷ್ಟೆ ಪ್ರದರ್ಶನ ಮಾಡುವುದರಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿಂದೆ ಬೀಳುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಎತ್ತಿಕೊಂಡು ಬಂದ ಹೆಂಗಸರ ಬಳಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಅವರು ಸಾಕಾದಾಗ ಕೊಲ್ಲುತ್ತೇನೆ ಅನ್ನುವಾಗ ಅವನ ನಿರ್ಭಾವುಕತನ ಬೆಚ್ಚಿ ಬೀಳಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದೇ ತೆರನಾಗಿ ಕೈ ಹಿಡಿದವಳ, ಓಡಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು‌ ಬಂದವಳ ನಡೆಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವಾಗ ,ಸಾಕಿದ ಕುದುರೆಗಳ ಕೊಲ್ಲುವಾಗ ಅವನ‌ ನಡವಳಿಕೆ ಹೇವರಿಕೆ ಹುಟ್ಟಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಹೀಗೆ ಸುಲ್ತಾನ‌ ಒಪ್ಪಿಸಿದ ಕೆಲಸವೊಂದನ್ನು ಮಾಡಲು‌ ಹೋಗುವಾಗ ಅವನು ಗಾಯಗೊಂಡು ಊರೊಂದರಲ್ಲಿ ಹೆದರಿ ಹೆದರಿ ಆಶ್ರಯ ‌ಪಡೆಯುವಾಗ ಅವನಿಗೆ ತನ್ನ ಜೀವನ‌, ತನ್ನ ಬಾಲ್ಯ ನೆನಪಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಮುಂದೇನು? ನೀವೇ ಓದಿ ನೋಡಿ.

ಓದಬೇಕಾದ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳ್ಯಾವುದು ಅಂತ ಯಾರಾದರೂ ಕೇಳಿದರೆ ಇದನ್ನೊಮ್ಮೆ ಓದಿ ನೋಡಿ ಅಂತ ಖಂಡಿತಾ ಹೇಳಬಹುದು.
ಸೊಗಸಾದ ಮುಖಪುಟವೂ ಇದಕ್ಕಿದೆ.

This book by author Krishnamurthy Hanuru translated from Kanada by L.S.Shankar Swamy is a chronicle of a solidier's life that won the Prestigious Karnataka Sahitya Acadamy Award.


A memoir of Tipu Sultan's unknown General , it is a blend of tales of historic events , folklore and legend. 


Cover is intricately designed 

Paper quality , binding , font sizes are excellent.


Local knowledge of history never conceives history as a record of heroic battles but as tragic events of local lives. The folklores heard from the mouth of locals are mostly different than what one learns from textbooks. 


Smooth narration with ornamental words, the story starts with Suleman Saab sharing the handwritten Dossier which is the memoir of the Unknown general of Tipu Sultan whose stone statue still stands strong with a man sitting astride a horse. This account shares the details of royal times and his adventurous life .

 



This book tells us how Battles with British devastated local lives. How people in authority used their power in a wrong way . These things are not mentioned in textbooks.


The descriptions are beautiful of the Sultan's passion , his palace , hunting  , how the general used his power negetively , ruthless punishments  women's exploitation and plight of natives  during those days . 



What made the General realise what really matters in the end and his trial of salvation was nice . 


If you like historial accounts or fictions you should read this book. It is a good one to be picked as a  good read .

Agnyatha: A Memoir of Tipu's Unknown Commander by Krishnamurthy Hanuru is a novel translated from Kannada to English by L.S. Shankar Swamy. As is clear from the title, the story revolves around the unknown commander of Tipu Sultan's army. His actions, his deeds and his thoughts—all filled in this tiny 180 pages book create a nice package overall. 

The book begins when the Commander was sent off to catch a tiger for the Sultan. The Sultan, also known as "The Tiger of Mysore", wanted a real tiger as his pet to signify his hold and courage. The Commander signed up for the task because he wanted to look good in the eyes of the King. And well, that's where the story took off, because he didn't really know how dangerous this action of his could be.

The book also discussed other moments of his life, e.g., about his father and the hatred his father developed within him and the villagers, about his marriage, about the women and money he took from the taxes, about this particular woman who had his baby and stood against him and other things. The timeline, however, confused me. I guess it won't be an exaggeration to say that the book is slightly confusing in terms of the time. There were many instances which confused me in that regard.

However, despite that, it was a good back if you're a fan of Indian historical fiction. Sadly, even though I love Historical Fiction, I'm not particularly familiar with the stories of that area, so I found the characters and stories of the Commander a little unrealtable. It was a translated book so I'm also certain that a lot of phrases that would have appeared appealing in the original text were not that great when translated to English. This bothered me but well, I doubt we can do anything about that since it's the story of every translated book. 

Hence, although a great read, I did not find myself connecting to it that much, considering these things. Nonetheless, I would urge you to read it out if you're familiar with the history. That always helps!

Synopsis:
This is the story of Tipu’s unknown commander. It leads us through his life and his deeds through past and present and also refer to the wars within the provinces as well as with the British at the time.
It talks about his life as a soldier, a husband, a man and a nomad. It moves through different landscapes and incidents taking inspiration from myth, folklore and history.

Review:
I like the fact that this is a fiction based on history and the times, places and incidents are as real in this world as in the book. The war with the British and the skirmishes within the different provinces have been described well.
It is all about a soldier’s life! A soldier who is not a good man in any sense of the word. He is brutal towards women, uncaring towards his family and dishonest to his overlord. This makes it difficult for me to relate to the character. It is very real but it is also the traits we tend to avoid either noticing in people or ignoring such people all together.
For me this book also gets a bit confusing because of the different timelines in the book. It would be a little easier if timelines were provided as written rather than understood! I also have no experience with translations and this book becomes a bit disjointed in places probably because I’m not reading it as it was written!
It a well written book with events moving apace. You so want to find out what happens next in his life? Does he run away? Does he forgive his father? Does he find his wife? Does he even care? All these questions boil down to the fact that he is essentially human with all their frailty and weaknesses!

If you like memoirs and to study human characters through a book do pick this up since it is very insightful! It’s a bit out of my comfort zone but I still enjoyed reading it!

Translated from Kanada by L.S.Shankar Swamy, and written by Krishnamurthy Hanuru, this novel traces the life of a commander under Tipu Sultan's reign. This book also won the prestigious Karnataka Sahitya Academy Award.
The unknown commander was very close to the sultan, and was responsible for maintaining law and order in the kingdom. The novel starts off with Tipu Sultan offering his commander to bring real tigers to be kept in the palace. Afraid of letting him down, the soldier sets off with his troop into the interiors of the forest and spends days on the lookout for one. Finally, the commander emerged victoriously and took back a ferocious tiger, caged, and hungry. This is just one of the many instances where the commander showed utmost courage. However, the commander's life was a series of brutal killings, merciless acts carried on the innocent villagers, and animal-like behaviour with the women. He would loot the poor, treat the women with scorn, and show no remorse. It was when the commander was faced with the same fate, he realized his deeds.
We also get to read about the commander's family life, his relationship with his father that was always volatile, and how he didn't care about his wife or having a family.
The novel has a blend of history, folklore, and myth giving the readers wonderful insights about India's rich heritage. The cover illustration has been beautifully described by the author with each and every detail mentioned with precision.
However, despite the rich context, I was finding it difficult to concentrate on the book. That's the downside of translated books. It loses the essence. I wish I could read the original text.

A unique way of storytelling style with folk songs and vivid imagery. Even though the story is set in the historical context, the core of the story is about a single person's journey with war as a backdrop. Overall good read.
