Re-read 07/09/21

I still feel exactly the same way after re-reading this wonderful one-shot. I needed something light-hearted and wholesome and this is exactly what I got. I adore the two main characters and still crushing hard on Shin (although I've only got a glimpse of his face) and their pureness is just the sweetest <3

I laughed out loud multiple times and forgot about the outburst from Shouta which was hilarious!!! I'm still waiting for a sequel...hopefully one day my prayers will be answered.

An easy 5 star read :D

An easy 5 stars!

This one-shot manga was perfect in every way. The artwork was cute and the characters were soooooooooooo adorably naïve!!! My beating heart can’t take much more cuteness!!! <3

Ne Ne Ne focuses on the marriage between Koyuki (a teenage girl) and Shin (a late 30-something man). I know there have been many negative reviews about this story (mainly because of the large age gap) and usually I would be uncomfortable with this too, however, both characters are very inexperienced when it comes to relationships and physical intimacy so I didn’t feel creeped out by the age gap – in fact, I was willing them to kiss!

It's also hilarious! I don’t think I’ve laughed out loud as much since Dreamin’ Sun, and despite the very short length, it’s full of funny and super sweet moments (namely when they try to increase their intimacy and show each other affection). I know some people would probably cringe at such scenes but since they were so innocent it just made it even more adorable.

I really do hope the mangaka decides to write more volumes in the future because I would love a whole series on the exploits of Koyuki and Shin. Plus, we need to see Shin’s face!! *swoons*

MY FIRST 5 STAR READ OF 2019!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I am not one for sappiness, but this manga was just so adorable with a lot to tug the heartstrings. I AM JUST SO MAD THIS IS A STANDALONE. GIVE ME MORE. (Ahem.) This is the perfect short read for anyone who has loved Natsume’s Book of Friends, Kamisama Kiss, and The Demon Prince of Momochi House (to name a few) because there is just a very charming mix of slice-of-life scenes with light supernatural elements. Highly recommend!!

A short and cute story about a husband and wife settling into their new (and slightly unusual) life.

There is some fantastical elements. But the story is too short to really get into it. Mainly the manga covers the couples normal every day interactions. There is a 20 year age gap between them (the girl is a teenager) which bothered me a little. But they keep their relationship completely platonic with a promise of it turning into more once the girl actually matures into a women.

Little icky but a fairly common occurance in Japaneese mangas so *throws up hands* what you gonna do? All in all it's a cute short story and if the age gap doesn't bother you I recommend you check this out. 2.7 stars

I hesitated a lot before buying this manga, and then was a bit afraid to start it, because age gaps are something that always bother me in mangas. Well, books in general I guess, but it's in mangas that I've noticed it more. Specifically when they treat them as if it's perfectly normal when it shouldn't be (I'm looking at you Cardcaptor Sakura, oh and I just remembered: U-sa-gi Drop 😒).

But you know what.
I. LOVED. IT. ❤️

It's so sweet and adorable and cute and just... so lovely. Sure, the age gap still bugs me, but the relationship between these two brings a smile on your face like all the time. And it doesn't have anything inappropriate in it when it could easily have been. So bonus points for that.

3/5 Stars: ‘NE NE NE’ by Shizuku Totono and Daisuke Hagiwara.
→ Age Range: Young Adult.
→ Genre: Manga, Historical Romance.
→ Trigger Warnings: -

In-depth Rating:
→ Plot: ★★★
→ Character Development: ★★★★
→ Setting: ★★★★
→ Entertainment Level: ★★★★★

General Comments: Age-gap romance; the impact is lessened by Historical Context. Not clearly stated, but based solely on background and conversational details, it is early 18th Century Japan; when arranged marriages were often fuelled by political or financial gain. The translation reads smoothly; the simple and sweet art adds to the light-hearted nature of the plot.

This was a cute and wholesome read!

I feel with many age-gap manga, there is a misconception(?) that ALL are toxic and problematic, but this one-shot is definitely not one of them that falls into that. While I won't say this is a new all-time favorite, I found myself quite happy and smiling throughout because of how sweet and playful these two are!

I was surprised originally, but I think Koyuki is a relatable character in that she is a young woman who has been forced into an arranged marriage and is trying to fulfill her new role well. She wants to make her husband happy and it's obvious that she takes her new role very seriously. Whether planned or unplanned, the way she begins to fall for her husband and wants her husband's affection was heartwarming, especially with how that final chapter unfolded.

I also really liked Shin! He is extremely respectful to Koyuki and I don't know how many times I laughed when he was like, "I shouldn't have done that!" or "I shouldn't have said that!" He can be quite mischievous all on his own! LOL!

I LOVED the story world and definitely wish we could have seen more of the fantasy aspect! I think it would have been an even more engaging story if it could have been fleshed out a little bit more. I would say that goes for the romance too because these two were so adorable together, especially if there is a misunderstanding that first blooms (later followed by good conversation of course!) concerning a certain situation or incident! LOL! My favorite part hands down was the little dragon though! I so wish we could have seen more of him!

Overall, I'm glad I FINALLY read this! It's popped up more than once in my feed on social media and despite not knowing anything about it, I'm glad I decided to give it a try for an upcoming video I wanted to film for my channel. I would say it was worth picking up as I can see myself coming back to this story when wanting something light-hearted to read!

Koyuki is 16 while her husband, Shin is 20 years older than her. They're newlywed and this is their story navigating their life in the new phase.

Honestly, the age gap cannot be more revolting than this but taking the historical setting, it makes sense. It's a cute story; romance with a pinch of fantasy. The ending was kind of abrupt but everything tied up nicely.

After reading this, I'm feeling like that emoji with hearts popping out of eyes. This is the epitome of cuteness! Even though I finished the story I can not ignore the warm fuzzy feelings I got from this beautiful story.

Koyuki and Shin are newly married couple but things are bit awkward between them because of the twenty years of huge age gap. In this story we follow their journey of getting to know each other and how they try to overcome the awkwardness.

Although there is a huge age gap but not for once does it felt weird. They're both inexperienced and innocent which makes them adorable when they try to express their feelings. It is a simple story without any complicated plotline focusing on their budding relationship with a touch of some fantastical elements to it.

The story is very short. I would really like to see some background story of Shin and Koyuki and the fantastical elements to be more explored.

This is the type of book that is best reviewed with gifs...which I don't have...but that little snippet of Despicable Me with the little girl hugging the plush unicorn and shouting, "It's so FLUFFY!" That's the gif I'd use for this. SO ADORABLE. Not much plot, BUT ADORABLE.

From Shizuku Totono and Daisuke Hagiwara (the artist of Horimiya), we have Ne Ne Ne, the story of 18 year old Koyuki and her new, mysterious masked husband, Shin, who is twenty years her senior. Koyuki is nervous about her new role as wife and her inexperience.
What she doesn't know however is despite her husband's cool appearance, Shin is just as nervous and naive as she is!

This manga is a short, cute venture into the lives of these awkward and adorable newlyweds...!

Firstly, the prominent age gap between the characters doesn't bother me (I had a crush on anime GILFs as a teen , so I used to regularly eat age-gap fanfics for breakfast) but may bother other readers if you're averse to that sort of thing. I am not.

Koyuki and Shin are both very awkward but earnest, and it's cute seeing their feelings for each other strengthen despite Shin's insistence to wait until Koyuki is 20 (partly due to his promise to her father, and partly due to his own innocence/nervousness) to even think about doing anything physical with one another. The manga clearly wanted to focus on the shy, cute feelings the two have together, and it does it fairly well I think.

There is a fantasy element to the manga (Shin has the ability to see things like sprites and dragons), but it honestly isn't utilized much when the adorkable/fumbling relationship is much more interesting to focus on.

Hagiwara's artstyle is wonderful, and makes for a refreshing, albeit short read. I have a few feelings of dissatisfaction upon finishing , but overall it's a cute little ride and worth the 20 to 30 minutes or so it took to read.

★★★★☆ 4/5. Short, Cute, and Sweet. Perhaps a little light plot-wise, but for a seven chapter one-shot manga that's forgivable.

In Meiji era Japan, young Koyuki has just been married off to a man more than 20 years her senior.
Fraught with worries of being a proper wife, Koyuki tries with all her might to please Shin, but he doesn’t seem to reciprocate in a physical manner.
Met with a major age gap, this married couple might find they have more to bond over than they might have expected. With each day that passes, they find themselves growing closer together as husband and wife, as well as friends.

A surprisingly sweet, tender, and fluffy story set in what seems to be the Meiji era of Japan. Ne Ne Ne has enough lore to keep the reader invested and entertained but if you’re in it for a conclusive story, this is not the manga for you. Ne Ne Ne doesn’t have quite so much a provocative story as it does a compelling cast. The pivotal characters depicted interact in real, human-like ways that breathe life into the pages. Even though their story was brief, I cared for Koyuki and Shin, and I found myself invested not necessarily in their story but in their lives and in them as people. Ne Ne Ne also received a conclusion as fitting as its beginning.

More of a 3.5 star rating;
I was a bit apprehensive to read this when I learned that there was such a large age gap between the main characters, however I’m glad I read this. The plot was typical with a younger girl married off to the older male, but I was very happy to read that the story itself stayed very wholesome; and almost platonic.
If I had to give a negative review of this, it would be that I was disappointed to learn that this was a one-shot. I feel like this could easily expand into a series, to show how the newlyweds relationship slowly progresses as time goes on. Also, I really wanted to see the rest of Shin’s face.

Although I am wary with marriage arrangements involving a child, at least this story was innocent enough. I liked how Shin is very patient with Koyuki despite their age gap and how he's not at all forceful like some typical creepy dude in some romance manga.. I wish we could get more than just 7 chapters man -.-

I think from plot wise the story looks really cute, but it could have been much better if the author make it more longer for potential character development. It's sad that the author just ended it like that. Still very fluffy though :)

Actually, I’m kinda unsatisfied with the ending. I know it's a happy ending but I can't die in peace now cause I didn't see the ML’s face.

This one shot manga is fit to read for those whom wants something light yet refreshing.

There's not really a story, it's just episodes from their life. It's cute but not really anything special. The fact that there's no follow up lowers my impression of it. I don't think the mangaka did enough with the space they had to tell this story. I wouldn't really recommend this tbh.

In Summary

Ne Ne Ne has a random set up, but it’s surprisingly cute and funny. Despite its unlikely cast, the awkward romance between Shin and Koyuki can only be described as innocent. If you’re looking for something sweet that’s set in a bygone era with a touch of supernatural, this title delivers.

The Review

According to the writer’s afterword, the title carries the meaning of “nenne,” someone who’s young and unsophisticated or naive about sexual matters. That pretty much describes our newlywed main characters, even if one half of the pair has a physical appearance that gives the opposite impression.

That’s Shin, a man in his thirties. Because of his ability to see and attract the supernatural, he’s beholden to wear a half-face mask to avoid being possessed. And because of family interests, he’s beholden to accept an arranged marriage with Koyuki, a pretty teenage girl. Sounds a creepy lolicon set up, but it’s not.

That’s partly because the story’s set in Meiji-era Japan, but mostly because Shin, despite his age, is so clueless about romantic matters that he’s essentially a teenager in the body of a middle-aged man. Although Shin is a respected, accepted member of the community, his supernatural abilities (and mask!) have prevented others from getting close to him. Which means he’s unfamiliar with intimacy, physical and otherwise. Compounding that is his father-in-law’s threat to “rip [his] spinal cord from [his] living body” if he touches Koyuki before she turns twenty. As such, even though Koyuki and Shin are married from page 1, there’s absolutely no sex, and the consummation of their marriage looks like it’s years away.

Meanwhile, Koyuki is completely unaware of her father’s threat to her husband. But despite having no choice in her marriage, she’s fond of and fascinated by Shin, whom she views as utterly sophisticated. As such, she’s determined to be a good wife and frustrated because Shin, although he is kind, treats her like a child.

And there we have the basis of most of the comedy in the story. Both genuinely want the marriage to work and have growing affection for the other. However, because they’re new at that type of relationship, misunderstandings and awkwardness ensue. Koyuki is the type to wear her emotions on her sleeve, but Shin’s mask makes him appear calm and collected even when he not. So it’s a fun contrast between Koyuki’s impression of Shin and his actual panicked emotions when they get just a little too close.

By the way, there’s no strong story arc. Chapters are episodic, and their interactions mainly take place in a household context. Shin may be connected with the supernatural, but the narrative focuses on a very domestic relationship. So even though the couple has a pet dragon, Pochimaru acts like the family dog more than anything else.

Extras include six pages in color, the creators’ afterwords, and translation notes.
