Dreams of blood in Kowloon Walled City(formatting copied from back of the ASIA 2000 first edition, missing ' and all). It looks like I'm the first to review the original English edition, though I suspect the German translation is just as good.
'When the afterimage had faded, he leaned closer. Something was painted on the forehead in watery red, a few symbols that reminded him of the ones on the scroll in the doorway. He passed his finger lightly across the cold forehead, and cursed as the symbols smudged - still wet.
'A tiny detail that had started by nagging at the back of his mind had finally reached the front. When he first looked, surely the eyes had been shut; but the second time, when he turned around at that gentle whoosh of breath, surely the eyes had been -'
She pushed him away and screamed at him to get out.Simon Valance is delightfully reprehensible in an identifiable rich British boy sort of way.
'Julia, Julia,' he said soothingly, sliding his arms around her again. 'I know what you need. I'm only trying to help you.'
This time she used her knee. He released her, doubled up, and sat down very hard on the bed, clutching himself.
'Right, I'm gone,' she hissed. 'Get out while I get dressed.'
'No,' he said faintly, 'there's no need. I - you only have to say -'
'I did say, Simon. Now get out.'
