Between pulling back the veil on the magic underground and learning shocking secrets from the past, Nina can't even right now. Also, she's terrible at flirting, and that's getting in the way of making out with Clint.
Meh! It was just little above average. I wanted to know more about her mother. But it gave away way less than I wanted. Like previous issues, ending was good.
OHHHH THIS BITCH IS FR FR 😩🥺 I respect her for this destruction. She even walked away without looking at the fire/explosion! Badass Move of Badassness.
The conclusion/revelation at the last issue had been slightly concerning if I’m going to be blunt here. It had the potential to be a major plot point as well as a way to force character growth, but it also had the potential to bring the series down (I’ve seen this sort of twist go that way before). Thankfully it looks like it’s going to take the former path, at least from the looks of this issue. Our main character has more to deal with than ever before, including what is possibly the biggest reveal of her life. But instead of wallowing in it, she toughens up and deals with the situation. I respect that. I really want to learn more about the paragon system. I mean that both in the magical sense (how the abilities work, how they’re organized, what part the jewels play in it) and in the political sense. It almost looks like they have their own factions, and each faction has a specialty and a political preference/opinion. I can infer that much, however, I’d like a chance to see that all in action. I’m hoping the next few issues will do exactly that. The artwork in this issue was beautiful, as always. I love the use of all the bold and bright colors. It’s not something you see every day, and when it’s coupled with beautiful linework…well, let’s just say I’m sold.
3,5/5 Reading this volume by volume it’s ruining my experience since I keep forgetting about the previous installments and I really wonder if there is something wrong with my memory. There is nothing memorable about this installment. We found out more about the paragons and Gloria and quentins dad and the gems and how it works but basically Gloria dismissed Nina and tries to make her forget everything but Nina lies and she starts to remember certain details about the earthquake night. Then all of the sudden the police is involved and apparently some paragons (Gloria, Quentin and Carter) came back from the death and now all the cabals want Hollywood territory. Nina now wants her mom back after finding out she was never really dead and wants to talk with her. I want to find out what really happened at the grand oasis though 👀
Why would her mom abduct her sister, though? It's obvious the Paragons know a lot on what's going on in the city, and Gloria is one of the most powerful. I highly doubt she didn't figure out her daughter had lied about "forgetting" and that Marisa didn't believe in magic at all. Surely, teaching someone who already beliefs and seems to have a super strong raw power (her "familiar" keeps making her tap into her anger to do things that seem impossible even to the Paragons, so...) is a lot easier than abducting someone who doesn't even believe magic exists? Either she has other plans, or she knew Marisa would be easier to manipulate which would mean she is evil for realsie.
idk. there were a couple sexy panels but I feel like ultimately the artwork is the only strength of this series, and sometimes even that is a little too Too. Makes me want to go back and restart WicDiv though, so maybe I'll pick that up again soon.
I might wander back over to this series way down the line when I want to peruse something flashy. After this has a couple completed volumes and time to expand more of the lore, the writing will probably improve and it'll be easier to actually appreciate the story that's trying to be told.
I also liked this issue! I loved Nina's main character moment and the political intrigue is growing to became a bigger part of the story, which I really like.
