This book is about two sisters, who live in the middle-class district of London, England.
They are like chalk & cheese, the oldest one, Sarah, upholding all the etiquette and finesse her background expects, while the younger one, Beattie, strives to speak 'cockney' and socialise amongst the working-class at the cattle markets and pubs.
Beattie is finally cast out of the house when she becomes pregnant, to no other, than the naval officer Sarah had intended to marry. The wedge between them becomes solidified.
Striving to bring up a child in the slums, with hardly any money, and a husband who beats her becomes more of a reality than Beattie had ever thought possible and she starts to yearn for a better existence.
When the war and an early illness deprives her father of his valued income Sarah has to join the ranks of the unemployed and find a job.
The two still struggle on, their own way, and not until a tragedy of the second war do they realise they really do need each other.

this book was really enjoyable. i like this authors books well written and very interesting.
sarah and Beattie Melford have never really been close or understood each other. Beattie think Sarah is a snob and Sarah can never understand why her sister persists in upsetting the household whenever she can. the split with the sisters becomes worse when Sarah finds her sister Beattie has taken the man that she was hoping to marry.
with London recovering from the Great War it is a great story of how the sisters survive and a girl they both love
i really recommend this book its a quite gripping book

A fantastic book

Took me a while to get into this book, but when I did, I couldn't put it down. The relationship and the different lives between the two sisters was great. I just found myself wanting to read on to find out what happened next. A great read.

A while back (like a year and a half ago) my godmother gave my mother a number of books to read - I was given them to read first being the quicker reader, which is how I came to read this...

So, what do we have in this book - a hell of a lot of predictability (granted there are some very very minor surprise type things thrown in here and there), some sisters at war (though that can also be considered predictable) and.... not much else.

The characters are bland and I didn't give a damn about any of them and if they succeeded in life - you need at least one interesting/likeable character in a book in my opinion.

This was obviously not my cup of tea and although I don't read books in this genre a lot I have been known to enjoy them - this one... not so much. In fact, this was a snoozefest if I am honest. It is probably a tad better than many of my one star reads over the last 3/4 years on this site ergo it's two star rating.
