As the colony grapples with the realization that New Earth is not as uninhabited as they’d once thought, tensions between the colonial settlements rise to new heights, and the Colonial Defense Force finds itself caught in the middle. When Connor uncovers evidence of a militant colonial faction secretly exploiting the NEIIS, he has to investigate. Connor learns that some of the colonial settlements have been holding back discoveries of their own. He’d thought the NEIIS were a threat to the colony, but he was wrong. They all were, and the truth is beyond anything Connor could have imagined. Meanwhile, Colonel Sean Quinn’s latest mission brings him off-world to investigate a previously discovered NEIIS settlement. When all communications from home go silent, he must return to New Earth to investigate. Cut off from everything, Sean must lead the crew of a CDF warship against a mysterious foe. Sean must forge a path into the unknown if he’s to have any hope of unraveling the mystery. Emergence is the sixth book in the best selling First Colony military space opera series.

Anticipated emergence

Bloody brilliant!
Ken writes a Stormer of a Sci-fi novel, if you haven't read any of his books yet and you like Sci-fi then look no further because his books are full of great characters, plots,.thrills and twists! Each book of his series is a compelling read that keeps you turning the page until you get to the end of the book and like me, disappointedly get to the end and have to leave the universe of Conner, Noah, Diaz, Dash, Lenora and many other great characters and return to our less futuristic universe where we don't have nanobots, enhancements and space travel amongst other amazing high tech futuristic stuff!
Ken get on and write the next one!!

A great instalment

This book takes almost 50% of itself building the world, catching up with our favourite characters and setting the platform for the next adventure for the New Earth inhabitants.

What the books lacks in action,it more than makes up for with intrigue, mysteries and revelations. Any fan of this series will love this one and it sets up book seven brilliantly.

I haven’t been back to this series for awhile. I kind of thought it was over since the New Earth Colony had just about killed all the possible threats to it’s existance, so far. Since this is still a relatively new colony, they are still exploring the space around them to now include the underway space. They would like to find all the NEIIS (New Earth Indigenous Intelligent Species) sites, especially any small or large cities.

It appears that the researchers from New Haven have found such a new site, but it is under water, at the bottom of a large inland sea. That’s a first for any of the NEIIS sites. Connor Gates, former General Gates of the Colony Defense Force (CDF), now retired, has been invited to visit this new NEIIS site and he eagerly takes his team with him.

In the meantime, Colonel Sean Quinn, Commanding the CDFS Vigilant has been tasked with two mission. First he’s to ensure the Apollo Mission is a success. This mission will sent a number of drones towards Earth hoping to detect any remaining humans on the planet and determine if Earth is still hostile. Due to the extreme distances involved, the drones will be operating independently and their resulting information won’t return to New Earth for almost one-hundred and fifty years. His second mission is to check up on some researchers investigating a possible NEIIS site on a small planetoid name Sagan.

Connor Gates and his small team are now aboard two small research submarines sitting at the bottom of the inland sea right next to a not so small NEIIS city. They definitly notice a huge arch at the front of the city. They have no idea what the function of this arch is and they haven’t seen one of these at any other NEIIS site found all over New Earth.

Suddenly, the submarines are rocked with a gigantic wave that throws everyone aboard all over the place. At first they thing it was some kind of very near seismic activity, but there’s been no indication of that kind of activity in this area before. They decide to surface and try to find out what happened as well as make some repairs to the sub. When surfacing, they do eventually figure out that they are almost 60 miles from their previous location. There’s no explanation as to how a submarine that was previously stationary move almost 60 miles in just a few minutes. All communications are also out. They can only send out a distress beacon and hope someone will respond.

At the same time as the submarines experienced their violent activity, the Vigilant started to come into contact with thousands of small objects in their orbit over Sagan. When previously there had been absolutely nothing on their sensors except the two small orbiting moons, the Vigilant seemed now to be in an astroid field. With the assistance of the ships AI, they successfully navigated out of the field, but not without some damage. While trying to figure out what happened, they noticed that only one of the small moons was still in orbit. It appears that the other small moon now is the astroid field orbiting the planet. No explosions or any other reason for this moons destruction can be found. Additionally, shuttles that had previously been sent to find the NEIIS researchers are now finding nothing anywhere on the planet.

Colonel Quinn gathers his senior officers and some of the brilliant scientist aboard his ship and asks them to figure out what happened. The best theory is that the Vigilant is no longer in the same dimension as they were. The only way to positively find out is to go back to New Haven. All their communications are out to or at least they are not receiving any transmissions from CENTCOM.

So, we have some interesting situations here. Could Sean’s ship and Connor’s subs both been hit with the same thing. And if so, how do they return to their own dimension, one of possibly millions!

A thrilling adventure that builds on the previous books and brings an exciting New direction to the series.

This series started out with a strong trilogy with a couple books afterwards that brought it back down to earth while setting up the events that occur in book 6. This book, just as the rest of the series is, is told from a third person limited point of view. Sometimes there are multiple point of views in the books depending upon the scope of the story. The writing is is tight and flows in such a way that you're pulled along Page by Page. Overall there is great growth in the characters that we get to see from the first book till this book. While individual books might not have that large of a character arc given the time limit some books take place in over all the series has come together quite well. It started out as military sci-fi in the first three books and kept that as a background in the next two books while not being the focus. Book 6 is a bridge back into the military portion of the Sci-fi that was being built in books 4 and 5.

if you're looking for an exciting action adventure in space or on New Earth this series is an excellent and fast read. I think in book 6 we see the author returning to the strength of the series and having built wonderful characters as well as the world and universe are characters get to play has a series that can go on for several quality books. I do enjoy how the author has humor and emotion woven within the story. It's hard to have romance and such within these action-packed stories because they usually take place over a short span of timebut there is some focus on relationships within the stories as well as possible relationships.

What is interesting is the fact that whereas book one has the best and brightest of humanity with utopian ideas that are almost Star Trek in their nature the series exposes the warts and all that remains in humanity while still striving for an ideal goal. Book 6 has a way of tearing a bit of the facade away from that image. It also brings characters around full circle in where the former pupils become the teachers and leaders.

The series so far remains fairly clean with little language and despite the action that takes place in many of the books it doesn't get too graphic. It's easily at PG-13 series.

Stargate travel

If you are a fan of the Stargate series and movie, then you should understand the tone of the adventures described in this novel. Two separate events with two different groups in two different places, are linked together by a method of space travel utilizing worm holes to jump from one planet to another. I am not sure if this travel affects different time periods also but it may just based on the descriptions of the geographic location. The only difference was the moons (one was destroyed, cause unknown). The saddest part of this book was the accident that severely injured Noah who has been placed in a medical coma. Because the colonists could not agree on a joint agreement on a process of evaluating the NEIIS sites that have been discovered with statis pods after what happened at the military site that Connor had been kidnapped to and only escaped by destroying the energy source to the pods. The problems arise from the lack of full disclosure of the NEIIS language to differentiate between the multiple types of NEIIS. All they can tell is that there was constant warring factions. This novel gives us a bit more information but no clear answer. A secretly run group had been awakening NEIIS and torturing them to gain information, not realizing that they had the wrong ones being questioned. After Connor and his group and the crew of the Vilgant return to present day New Earth, does the colony realize that they need to coordinate everything to find out the full story and how battle with the real enemy if any, possibly using NEIIS technology. Connor returns to the military forces at end of book.

Opportunities Lost

A very famous person (with nasally voice) once said, "What we have here is a failure to communicate." In, "Emergence" it is a failure on many levels for many different reasons. There are aliens who don't speak English nor we their language, no common understanding of different cultures, not to mention different factions within our own society who may believe they want what is best but disagree on method, and then there are the just mean or greedy. Even with understanding, it seems that the human condition is distrust, warfare, and killing. We are like a pod of monkeys in a tree in some forest throwing dung at one another over some grievance. Can you imagine what we could accomplish if we all worked together? It is almost like a cosmic diety didn't want us to excel so they threw a wrench in the works of empathy. So we have in this book, "Emergence", the seeds of something that could be awesome but ends in distrust, war, and killing. So, to me, while New Earth emerges safe once again, it is a sad story of opportunities lost.

The serie really doesn´t get better unfortunately. The people in this story hardly know the planet they live on, have no clue about the solar system they live in or any of the surrounding stars. But they find a portal to a parallel universe. While the idea of teleportation gates is an old hat both in Scify (for example Stargate, Perry Rhodan) and countless fantasy stories. Those stories mostly were about teleportation to other places in the same reality, as the idea of a (2sided) gate to other universes seems rather preposterous. If these portals need a portal in each different universe how do the builders set up the other side in the other universe? And if they would be able to reach another universe using other means why would they need such awkward portals?

To think bigger is not always better. Sometimes it is quite the opposite. And unfortunately all the other stories i read and saw before were way more thrilling and compelling than this one. It is very sad as i rather liked the characters and thought that the story had a lot of potential.

I've read the whole First Colony sequence from the beginning and it's on my list of things that I can kick back and enjoy without having to decode. In this latest installment, some of the second tier characters come into their own, while Connor, the ex-special ops guy shanghaied from Earth to save him from getting court-martialed in setup, is still around and stirring things up.

The action here takes place in space aboard the colonies newest cruiser, around more alien sites where the previous alien colonists have been slumbering in cryo for aeons, and under the planet's inland sea where there's some very problematic alien tech still active.

This book sets up a new threat for the colony to deal with, which they really needed after defeating the invasion of zombies from Earth. OK, not really zombies.

The characters aren't deep, but they're real and I'm looking forward to more adventures to come.

The more things change, the more they stay the same

Well, I thought the Vemus were an overwhelmingly challenging & an overkill for an opponent. But it seems that Lozito likes to play hardball.
The majority of the colonists are mostly ignorant of the fact that there is first an unknown number of people working at cross purposes to Connor & his group. Then yet a different enemy show up and as with the Vemus they have far superior strength & abilities. The story is still interesting but we still have to deal with casualties meant (I think) to keep the pressure on the reader to convey how dangerous things are.

The New Earth colony keeps expanding and as part of their growth they intend to find out what has happened back on on Earth. Connor and his team keep finding Neiis settlements and pods. But what he discovers is that someone is also looking for them and disturbing them.
At the same time Col. Quinn is assisting scientist on launching a mission to explore Earth. But they run into problems when they are cut-off from the CDF Network.
Connor thought he was out but as he sees things turning over, he might be back into the CDF.

Robert's Review

Awesomeness is obtained through the judicious application of forethought, planning and violent execution of the resulting COA. I am liking the direction of this series and hope to see something of a hybrid from the mix of Nexstar armor and the MPS system. The use of the nannites here and I think genetics once you link with the NEIIs could fill volumes. Thanks for the GoodRead.

Great twist

I really enjoy the storytelling of this particular series. Even though there's not so much focus on action or strategy of the grand space operas of other authors. I really like where he's going with this series and unique takes with colonization reconnecting with the old investigating alternate realities with a possible rebellious alien species that's fighting its own military

Adventure everywhere

This book may have been better than the last one. The action and adventure doesn't stop. I do love this series. I can't stop reading them. I love the story of settling a new planet. But discovering all the different species on this planet always leads to some kind of adventure for the people. I would recommend this series to anyone who lives action, adventure, and just a tiny bit of romance thrown in to make things interesting.

Typical book in this series, government is mired in bad politics, Conner plays by his own rules, Conner gets in trouble, everything works out, Conner wont get into politics, even though things are clearly getting worse.

Story was good, if a little predictable. Main cast is back, and still very enjoyable to listen to. I would like some character growth from Conner, as the plot is becoming more intricate, but Conner is becoming stale. Can't wait to see what the next book brings.

The pace starts ramping up, yet again, as a new threat enters the stage. I was a little ambivalent about this one. There were some nice moments - Connor, in particular, feels more rounded, and the colony politics are beginning to deepen. In contrast, it's hard to do 'multi-universe sci-fi without it coming off clunky and, so far, I'm not sure if Lozito is going to pull it off.

Overall, a decent read.

What a tease

Another great instalment and gripping right from the off. Interesting to see a different aspect to the NEIIS, especially the poor captives. I'm hoping this is just a tease for an even better next instalment. I've loved every book in the series so far, so keep doing what you do best, Ken.

A fun read with a rapid pace and plentiful, diverse action. This book did have less character development then the earlier works. It almost felt as if the characters were devolving. While this story did come to a complete and satisfactory end it did leave enough open to fill a couple books if not several.

Love this series!

Well written, edited in my opinion. Each book has clear beginning, middle, and end, but still leaving the adventure open and hanging. Slow, but steady movement in aliens unveiling. Series has the potential of becoming a even larger mega story. Wish I didn't have to wait for the next book.

Another great book in the series

Ken Lozito is such a good author that I can see this series lasting quite a while. There are many parts of the story yet to be explored. This book continued the already wonderful storyline and grabbed me from the beginning. I have turned into a huge fan of the author and this series.

Ken Lozito's First Colony series is a great series that just keeps getting better as each new book comes out. He keeps the story on point and the characters stay true to themselves. Never a dull moment for Connor and the rest of the colony, between the natives and his own people he does not get much rest, thanks again Ken, love the way you write.

Happy to finally get started with our understanding of the NEIIS motivations / fears, and it wasn't something I saw coming! That said, this one felt even more part of a longer story than a story in its own right, something the first 4 books did better with. Still a great read, fast paced and great characters.

Unexpected turns that makes this book a more compelling read than others of its kind.

It might not ever be considered literature, but it sure is entertainment.

The author delivers with this installment of the series. The people of New Earth stand divided, while the mystery of the NEIIS slowly comes into focus and the contours of their backstory goes to an unexpected high.

I like that it continues the story from the previous book and it picks up the storyline where we left off doesn't leave anything to the imagination you're not trying to figure out what the heck happened

Better than book 5

Book 5 still had a good story but I did not care for the fact that the young archeologists who refused follow orders did not have to suffer any consequences for his actions. Book 6 was much better by comparison and was on par with the other books in this series. Looking forward to reading the next one.

Still packs a punch

This series never fails. Trust the author for a good story that keeps you on the edge and not wanting to put the book down til it’s finished. Strong characters, amazing story line and the plot thickens. I’ll anxiously await the next in the series.

A great bridge to the new unknown

First I have to say I now much I enjoy Lozitos writing and story crafting. This is the 6 th book in the series and you can see it as the bridge linking the stories the current arc and cast a new bigger universe, a great read...pick it up....

Great addition, or continuation of the First Colony series. Read them in order though, it will be worthwhile. Great characters, mysteries, and plot twists. An all around enjoyable ride.

It stands to reason someone would resort to the tactics Lars, e.t al, exploit the situation of New Earth. The General will have his hands full and hopefully Noah will recover and help.

Fantastic

Really liked the direction of the series. The expanding lore, the development of the characters, the subtle and not so subtle changes of the colony. Definitely better then book 5 which was good and provided background on New Earth. Can't wait for book 7.
