Cotana is a twelve-year-old girl, trying to survive the streets of Brooklyn, New York. Having nothing was something she was accustomed to. Beginning poor came easy to her, but living with her mother, Collette, was the real struggle. Not having her mother’s love and support was more damaging to her than the streets. Battling the anguish from the loss of her father, who died at the hands of an angry man, she tries to find a way to still be strong for herself and her mother. Having a mother who’s in love with drugs and addicted to the bottle was never her dream. However, she does everything in her power to make it right like it used to be. But that will come to an end when her mother chooses her lifestyle over her own daughter. Cotana decides she has to do what she has to do to keep her life going the best way she knows how. She finally catches a break when she meets Chayse. He is a Godsend who assists her with getting off the streets. He also helps her to understand her worth and that she can do anything she sets her mind to.Chayse was once in Cotana’s shoes, not knowing where his next meal would come from and having to rob Peter to pay Paul because his mother wouldn’t be the adult. Growing up, he felt like he wasn’t worth shit but he also finds his life savior. Amelia is a woman who took him in and treated him like her own, teaching him everything he needed to know about living the street life. Amelia isn’t used to the struggle. She had it all through her father but that didn’t stop her from having a kind heart. She would do anything to help anyone. She’s the sweetest person you could ever meet until you cross her. But the question still remains, will Cotana make her way From The Streets To The Throne or will she die trying?
I could not put this book down! I went to sleep reading this book and woke up reading this book! I’m estatic about chayse finally waking up and I can’t wait to find out who the person was that shot him! For some reason I think it was Ahmir!
This book was a very good read. My attention was held from the very beginning until the end and I still wanted more. The characters and storyline was well developed and you could feel and imagine what was happening with them. I felt so bad for the main character Cotona she was dealt a wrong hand in life. Her father's death and then having an alcoholic and drug addict for a mother, who cared about getting money to chase that next high and partying with her get high friends. I love how Cotona and her best friend Dahlia stuck together through the years being that Dahlia came from a wealthy family with two parents. One thing I can say is that Cotona could handle the streets and was not afraid of no one or anything. Chayse is someone that Cotana meets when she is twelve years old and he takes her under his wings to help her. So when she turned fifteen he introducec her to Amelia that raised Chayse after he was in the streets after his parents died,. I really enjoyed this book and I am looking forward to finding out more about Cotona, Dahlia and Chayse. I highly recommend this book to read. Cassandra H.
This was a hard one for me to get into! I had a hard time reading about everything a 12 yr old was going through. I guess that's because I have a 12 yr old myself. Once I was able to get past all that I couldn't stop reading. Yes this 5 star read was a page Turner. This was my first read by Tiyell and most definitely won't be my last! I look forward to reading part 2.
This is a very emotional and heartbreaking book but it is a good read. I don't know how much hurt can one person take. Cotana has been through more heartache and pain than the average 18 year old. Somehow she manages to push through and keep moving forward. Looking forward to reading book 2
I hated that Cotana had to go through all those hardships in her living with her mother. I’m glad Chayse came to her rescue. And then when he introduced her to Amelia she was like the mother she never had. The friendship that her and Dahalia has was so beautiful. They were hick as thieves. I can’t wait to read part 2.
I feel so bad for Contana, its like can she please just catch a break for once. I love that Amelia a d Chayse took her in and they started functioning as a family. I hope part 2 has a better outcome for Contana.
