To Cross a Blade and Dagger is an excellent intro to a fantasy series and world. I say 'intro' only because the stakes of the book are fairly low and hint at something bigger for our two main characters that stretches far beyond the confines of this first story.
My only wish is that the magic system was a bit more fleshed out (but not overly so). I also had a hard time connecting with one of our two leads (Aidan), as his story is a bit bland and uneventful, but it does turns interesting once you his real self is revealed.
But, other than that, an intriguing framework is laid down for future tales, in this well-written yarn that doesn't fall into the trappings of a lot of other overly complicated and dry fantasy novels.
