Do we test the Holy Spirit's patience with prayer that asks nothing of him? This might sound surprising at first blush, but most people have experienced being at a prayer meeting, in church, or (gasp!) in their own personal prayer time and hearing prayers like "God, bless Tom" or "God, just be with Sue in her need." Will Davis Jr., pastor of Austin Christian Fellowship, calls believers to a more risky and rewarding practice of prayer. Pray Big teaches readers how to pray with biblical, pinpoint accuracy. In other words, it teaches them prayers that get things done. From audacious prayers for miracles to mundane prayers about lost car keys, Davis takes the reader from a point of weakness to one of boldness. As a result, readers will want to pray more, they will see more results from their prayers, and they will be emboldened to ask God for everything he has promised them.
Uncovered this book, looking for another and since the subject of prayer has been on my mind I sat it by my reading chair to take a look. It was read a few years ago (my version published in 2007), obvious by the yellow highlights, a habit I have (thankfully) forgone.
The book proved enlightening and convicting. Addressing first the types of prayers common – Lord, be with…or please bless…that are void of specifics, while at the same time we have made prayer complicated. Davis, Jr points to the need for very specific things, gritty things, personal things, important things, kingdom things. He models this from what Jesus modeled in the Lord’s Prayer.
Davis Jr. wrote a serious book lightly, meaning it took you in, challenged what you know about prayer, and was convicting with a light brush.
The book includes an appendix of 100 Pinpoint Prayer suggestions from the Psalm. A very lovely bonus!
This is one of the most inspiring books I've read in a long time!! My husband and I loved it so much we bought 3 more copies for each of our 3 sons. I highly recommend!!
