Hal and Clunk answer a distress call, only to discover a fellow pilot stranded deep inside an asteroid field.Clunk is busy at the controls, dodging incoming rocks, so Hal dons a spacesuit, takes the jetbike and sets off on a heroic rescue mission. If he'd only known the trouble he was getting himself into, he wouldn't have bothered...
Simon Haynes is the author of the Hal Spacejock, Harriet Walsh and Hal Junior (MG) series. He divides his time between writing fiction and computer software, with the occasional bike ride thrown in for a laugh.
Hal and Clunk are at it again. In the wars and don't they know it!
Hal Spacejock and his coleague, co-pilot and best friend Clunk the robot, have a space freight moving business. And whilst on their way to drop off some cargo to Planet Dolor and pick up their payment, they heard an sos coming from a small damaged craft drifting in an asteroid belt. All they know is that is a small ship and a female pilot who's in trouble.
However, through no fault of his own, after Hal ends up going out of his ship to pick up one person in trouble, yet somehow ends up saving two women in trouble. Sam being the one who was the pilot who sent out the sos, and the other is a big burly woman called Max who had tried to get Sam out of her cockpit and had been knocked out in the process, hence the need for two rescues.
Hal tries to do what he thinks is the right thing; to help Sam and Max out by landing briefly on Dolor to drop them off in a huge park for safety; otherwise Sam and Max would be arrested by armed forces who are trying to take over Dolor and its peaceful people.
Of course Hal not only drops them off in an entirely unsuitable place which is most certainly not the park. But he doesnt go back to collect them at the time he promised to. Of course non of this is Hal or Clunks fault. Life just keeps happening and they try to help more and more people until things are quite frankly in a right mess. As per usual!
If you have read any of the Hal Spacejock series you will know that they are brilliantly funny. I love the way things alsways seem to go wrong even when Hal's intentions are so good. He can't help himself. He's a very good guy with very bad luck. Oh and although he calls himself a pilot...he isn't one and cannot safely be left in charge of flying anythibg safely.
This is truly a great read. Great entertainment, full of hilarious imagery. It's totally ridiculous and I simply love it!
Good, but lost one star because of the non-continuity of the story. It had practically no ties (apart the new spaceship) with the previous story, like in old tv series when multiple writers didn't seem to talk to each others before writing a new episode. Not even a mention of Captain Vera...
Haven't read all the Hal Spacejock series as of yet but the ones i have never disappoint!Neither does this one. Space adventure, humour, heroism, it's got it all. This book was funny to the point The author doesnt even need to try but it also had it serious moments which balances very well :)
