read for my From Script to Screen class
the very first time I try to make a movie that doesn’t look entirely homemade, written, produced, directed, styled, and shot by me only.
very nervous. this book helped with some of the technicalities but I felt some things were missing.
anyway, a great read if you want to introduce yourself to cinematic terms and the less romanticized version of filmmaking

This book is a typical low-quality "business book" or "coaching book", or "motivational", or call it whatever. Readers should realize that the only purpose of books like this is to earn money for authors, not to teach the readers or give them aesthetic pleasure.
This one, as I've said, is not an exclusion. It tells you nothing. It does not tell you a story, it does not learn you, it does not even motivate you. Unless those ten bucks you spend on it is a motivator for you. Seriously: if you want to know how to make a great movie you should read about color theory, about composition, about sound arrangement and so on. And if you want to shoot a not-so-great movie, then you don't need this book as well! Go and spend that money on a cheap clapperboard. And spend the time on reading the manual for your camera.
This book looks like a compilation of short blog-posts from the Internet. Not surprising: the publisher is a movie reviews magazine and the author is one of their men. They don't have other books and I hope this one will be the last.
The only two pros for this book that come to my mind are cool stylish illustrations and the fact that this book is so short that it takes literally an hour or two to read it. Reader may also use it as a checklist of movies to watch if she has a lot of spare time.

Heavy on the basics and the inspiration, very light on the specific how-to nuts-and-bolts. Still, it's a very helpful primer for those with little to no prior experience making movies. Short, sweet, and (dare I say) inspirational.

Breve, sencillito, útil y práctico. Para alguien con bastante conocimiento del tema, apenas sirve, porque no es especializado,pero si estás empezando, no está nada mal para tenerlo como recurso.

Mucho material útil, pero una idea terrible. No basta con un móvil para hacer cine.

Me leí este libro porque me lo regalaron, el gesto me pareció muy bonito, y porque era relativamente corto de leer. También porque al ojearlo vi muchas referencias a director@s que me gustan muchísimo. Pero ya desde el inicio tenía un problema con cómo se presenta el libro: que todos somos “filmmakers” porque tenemos contacto con el audiovisual en el día a día, y que lo único que necesitas para convertirte en uno bueno, es este libro.
Primero, no creo que las personas seamos algo solo por el hecho de tener contacto con su objeto de trabajo. Yo ando en bicicleta, pero eso no me hace ciclista. Ahora estudio cine, pero eso no me hace cineasta. Pienso que todos pueden ser cineastas, sí, pero no por tener una interacción superficial con el medio. Pienso que la diferencia está en el compromiso y la dedicación que entregas a la actividad, y en la capacidad de materializar cosas o acciones a partir de esa dedicación. Esta presentación del libro se siente como un clickbait: Partimos de que ya eres un cineasta, y solo te falta leer este libro para ser uno bueno.
Segundo, la tesis parte de que un móvil, hoy en día, hace lo mismo que una cámara profesional, y que con esto ya tienes ganada la batalla. Usa el argumento de que ya hay directores que han hecho sus películas 100% con los móviles, pero no te dice la cantidad de tiempo y de trabajo detrás. La realidad es que ni siquiera teniendo la mejor cámara del mercado uno ya está capacitado para hacer una buena película. El libro le quita toda la atención a la parte esencial del oficio: necesitas reflexionar, reflexionar y reflexionar. Pensar sobre qué quieres hacer y cómo quieres hacerlo. Intentarlo. Crear un cuerpo de trabajo que pruebe distintas teorías y voluntades. Primero deben haber pensamientos, no equipo técnico. Supongo que para mí, alguien que piensa el cine es más cineasta que alguien que aprende a hacerlo sin pensar en él. Necesitas ideas y una filosofía humana y de trabajo personal.
Cada director@ tiene una manera específica de trabajar cada uno de los aspectos que componen una película, y esto resulta en una infinidad de películas muy distintas unas de otras. Parte del problema del libro es que el autor toma una manera de trabajar un aspecto especifico según un@ director@ y termina transmitiendo la falsa idea de que para ese aspecto solo hay un método concreto. Así, el libro termina mezclando maneras de hacer cine de varios directores y termina armando un collage de recomendaciones superficiales para cada aspecto que compone una película. Te dice cosas como: “consigue un buen sonido”, “consigue buenas interpretaciones”, “cuenta tu historia con imaginación”, pero no te dice cómo realmente conseguirlas.
Si algo rescato, es que este libro puede funcionar como una libreta donde puedes ver varias maneras de tratar un aspecto específico de una película. Es una libreta donde puedes elegir métodos que te gusten. También me gusta mucho que en ciertas partes plantea que hacer cine implica hacerte muchas preguntas. Para alguien que ya sabe la teoría, refuerza cosas. Para quien no sabe, puede crear una ilusión de que todo esto es muy sencillo, y que esta es la única vía de trabajar las cosas. Aparte de que estoy seguro que después de leer este libro no sabrás realmente cómo grabar una película. Simplemente no profundiza lo suficiente en el aspecto técnico de las cosas.
En general, le pongo tan mala puntuación porque, aunque tenga mucho material útil, la idea del libro me parece terrible: enseñarte a hacer una película casi como una fórmula mágica. Promete cosas simplificando todo.

Beautiful illustrations & helpful advice. This book helps any newbie or experienced filmmaker identify key elements that contribute to making a great movie!!! Plus, there are some new films to watch now! Definitely recommend!
