Near future. The NASA is confident it finally discovered an exo-planet likely to accomodate life. Located 4 light-years from earth, Darwin II creates a lot of questions and is scheduled for imminent exploration by a space probe. At the same very moment, an orbital space station is struck by a missile shot from the moon, killing several astronauts. Coincidence or conspiracy?
I always preferred European comics, and you can say there are two reasons for that. One, I grew up on them and two, their stories were always more intriguing than their US counterparts, which are mostly based on superheroes in spandex suits. This year I've discovered publisher "Humanoids" and I can say that I quite enjoyed reading their comic books. Sure, not all of them are great, but decent and most of them are equivalent to Hollywood summer blockbuster, fun without too much essence. Sometimes that's just what we need. Exo is another example of that. Story of a first contact, military, divorced scientist, end of the civilization, cheesy ending. Nothing new, yet Frissen tries to mix it up a bit and spice things up with some new ingredients. Art is decent, goes with the writing. All in all, fun read. If you like a no brainer SF to pass some time, might as well do it with Exo.
I really struggled with my rating of this because what it gets “right” in atmosphere is great. Unfortunately it’s also bogged-down by a few glaring plot-holes that you need to be prepared to overlook, and an ending that feels rushed - ultimately resulting in an unsatisfying “oh…that’s it then?”
There’s a pretty decent idea at “EXO”’s core - it’s just a shame it’s one that isn’t fleshed-out nearly enough. As such, I landed on a middling 3-star rating: you’ll neither love it or hate it, it’s Sci-Fi “meh” - worth the ride, but you’ll only ever want to do so once. Shame.
I’m surprised this has received such a mediocre star rating average on Goodreads. I found it an enjoyable page turner in the vein of other sci fi stories such as Contact and Solaris. The artwork does a fine job telling the story of a clandestine attack on planet earth, and the race to figure out why. Characters are unpredictable and the, admittedly grounded, sci fi plot kept me guessing until the end.
