Presenting IDW's Transformers comics in recommended reading order, including one-shots, crossovers, and event series! It's everything a beginner could need, everything a diehard could want.
The Autobots and Decepticons' uneasy peace is threatened by the flames of war! Starscream, ruler of Cybertron, makes contact with Windblade's homeworld--and the only defense against a new Cybertronian Empire is the Combiners--multiple Cybertronians joining together into huge, dangerous forms!
Collects Transformers issues #39-43, More Than Meets The Eye issues #41-44, and Windblade Volume 2 issues #1-5.
The delay in reading this series (f you check start and stop dates) in no way reflects the quality of the book itself. Unfortuantely, I went looking for the next volume (which ahs since gone out of print) and the failure to procure it resulted in me being dishearted.
This point aside, this is a truly great collection of stories. It features the 'Combiner Wars' storyline where fusion becomes center stage in the main narrative. This volume also features the incredible 'More Than Meets The Eye 44' a story which has one of those 'absolute gut punch' finale two pages to a comic which stick with reader and make them remember the issue fondly.
Gotta be so real, the Windblade issues weren’t my favorite but miles better compared to the first ones. However, Transformers #39-42 was spectacular, and MTMTE #41-44 was some of the most entertaining and wildly flabbergasting stuff I’ve read so far (even considering #36) and I ate up every bit of it. In ADDITION to this, an absolutely insane setup for another Megatron arc. Holy shit that is a lot of flowers. In the meantime, please don’t stop drawing rodimus in these poses I can’t tell you how many times I outright cackled. Also the holo-avatars? CYCLONUS’ holo-avatar?? 😝 👅 maybe I don’t have beef with this gorgeous queen anymore… KIDDING. I haven’t forgotten what you did.

This volume contains most of what you need to get the full “Combiner Wars” experience. I personally did not love this leg of the journey, but there is some incredible character building through-out this volume, in particular with Soundwave, Windblade, and Optimus. The whole Cybertronian universe is shifting on several fronts, and you really get a sense for the vastness of the story the writers at IDW are aiming for.
Not the most exciting volume…. But there is clearly lots to look forward too. 3.5/5
The stuff of Cybertron is interesting enough, same with the Combiner wars but as always, MTMTE continues to be the highlight and honestly one of the best long running comics I've read, or at the very least now a favourite for sure.
If I was purely rating MTMTE - 5 stars easy. Windblade and Transformers - 3.5 stars?
This volume has many great stories in it. The introduction of new characters and worlds of transformers is well done and those integration of those societies is very entertaining.
