I feel like I've been hoodwinked into reading the apocalypse version of Amelia Hutchins.

I'm never reading another goddamned book of hers. She starts you off with witches, faeries, otherworldlies, goddesses, and then bang........the devil, angels, the apocalypse, heaven falls, arch angels go poof, arch angel walks into the one bar on the whole f-ed planet (Vlad's) and orders shots. This book is punked.

She gets established characters that are thousands of years old if not more, and she turns them into immature punks. She single handedly destroyed her never ending saga with this book. Like, who wants to read about Heaven, God, angels, etc when they pick up a smutty book? You crazy bro? Trying to get us out of the mood?

I am definitely a minority on not liking this book, I've struggled to get through this series up to this point and I finally can say I wont continue it. I really love her other series in the same world but it has been awhile since I read those so maybe I will feel differently now not sure.

I was really hoping this one would turn it around for me and when it started I was really hopeful I was like here's the authors chance to basically re create her character and at the start it felt like Lena was going to be this bad ass character even though it was a lot of telling at the moment. but she soon fell back into her old vibe while still going on and on in her head how shes different and has no emotions but wait! shes really the same deep deep down she just cant show it and only spyder see's who she really is ( don't get me started on the whole her spyder and lucian thing )

I just felt like a lot of scenes were set up to show how bad ass she was and some of them were pretty cool but then her inner monologue or some other thing seemed to ruin it for me. I also dont really care for lucian one way or another, I don't get his draw he goes on and on how hes this monster and doesn't care. The only time I peaked at interest in him is when we were told he showed grief over her dying yet another thought of me going oh maybe this will get him to change into bad ass who only shows her love but nope. He just seems like this angry always yelling or scolding or teaching some kind of evil lesson with his actions and then having rough sex with Lena. There's nothing else that I saw as a connection but maybe I just missed it idk.

I found that it was just a lot of long speeches from the characters especially Lena, now I don't mind a good speech but when they happen over and over basically saying the same thing (they are having the same argument over and over ) and they all are just as long it loses its effectiveness for me and I end up skimming. It was like * Long speech * I wont have sex with you, our child is dead! you have to earn me back blah blah and then 5 minutes later they are having sex. which fine there are always exceptions to relationships working and stuff but when they have the same argument over and over followed by sex, nothing has changed with them at this point to me she just seems like shes saying shes this bad ass creature who can fight super but then acts the same as before when shes not supposed to.

and they just kept losing in this book over and over which fine but it felt like this build up then nothing this build up .. then nothing. As well sometimes I wouldn't know who was suddenly talking I'd be reading one point of view and then suddenly I am like wait what lucians talking now? no wait Hades? then it would be back to Lena. Same with scene changes they would be one place then time passed and they are somewhere else or I'd have trouble visulising a scene till the end and then im like wait? this took place in the middle of the street? how did no one notice? or they are looking at eachother and im trying to picture where they are standing and im like is this inside is she across the street and he is at the front door are they in back yard, is this building in the middle of a city? is it out of the way private no clue.

I wont even start on the ending,

I didn't mean to write so much for this review It's just been building up from the other books I've just been hoping this series turned around for me and I could say I loved it. I truly don't like leaving reviews where I say I don't like a book, It actually pains me because deep down I do still like this series and idk why keeps me coming back exactly. I doubt I will read the next one but who knows maybe my curiosity will force me to check it out. I don't blame anyone who enjoys this since I still kinda do on some level but there was enough little things that I didn't like that I just cant continue.

Not worth reading

Dnf, ugh. I got to about 76 % and I just couldn't bother to want to finish, I was literally forcing myself to read on, and in the end I felt I could be reading something better with all the books awaiting me on my wishlist. I literally didn't care for any part of this book, or our main characters. These read was boring and just plain ridiculous. She comes back as being uncaring but is caring throughout the book, I wasn't buying her " badass" she fell limp in so many disappointing ways, I did not care for her character any longer, she didn't impress me by what she was or could do, but then again we really didn't get to see much as she fought in her head and her pathetic fight with Lucian was just downright sad. Don't get me started on the whole dominating her to control her powers, what powers!!! She didn't do anything!!! Oh and the repeating sentences over and over, like a broken record. I love Amelia hutchins, but this by far is the worse book by her. I won't be finishing this series, honestly at this point I don't even care what happens, such a waste to a book series that had so much potential.

Becoming his Monster is the third book in the Playing with Monsters Series. When everything seems to have been lost, Lena and Lucian find their way back together again. Now they must fight through the chaos and learn to understand their new normal. The darkness continues to threaten all that they share between them and yet, as soon as they embrace the dark everything becomes perfectly clear.

"...he fucks me like a savage."
Told in multiple POV, Becoming his Monster is another unforgettable installment to this series. Just when I thought I had figured it all out, everything changes again. This is one plot that does not stop twisting and turning and it is one ride that I never want to end.
"I'm going to dominate you."
Overall, Becoming His Monster will appeal to any and all paranormal romance fans who enjoy a hot alpha male and an unstoppable heroine. My only complaint is that I don't know if (or when) the next book is coming out. Surely that could not be the end of their story? Lucian and Lena have quickly become one of my favorite paranormal couples of all time! I am hungry for more!!!!!!

I need to listen...

I've decided the best way to enjoy an Amelia Hutchins story is to listen instead of reading. While I enjoy the storylines, characters, and passionate feelings, I really struggle with the execution. When her stories are read to me, I am entranced. I think in Becoming his Monsters, the narrators made this story. The characters came to life for me. I know Lena and Lucian, I see them, I feel their emotions. The characters that surround them became real and I was tricked into loving Monsters.

When I started, it took me a while to get what was going on. I can honestly say I was surprised by the 'new' Lena. She's a wee bit nasty and her messed up emotions make no sense because she claims to not feel. I do enjoy her strength and determination, though. Lena's new indestructibility was amusing and I enjoyed the reactions she provoked in her friends and enemies.

We did see a different side to Lucian but his true nature was never far from the surface. I liked that he had to work to get back in Lena's good graces. I need to know what he is.

I will be back for more but it will only be if it comes out as an audiobook. Even though I'm frustrated that we're left with a cliffy, I'm still interested enough to come back to find out what Lucian is.

DNF. I can’t believe I am going to DNF an Amelia Hutchins book at all, much less one from this series. I have lived and breathed the Monsters series since she released the first book, and I have anxiously waited for this installment for months. Here’s the thing, it was a total snooze and kind of a hot mess. It’s like it was written in bits and pieces and they didn’t all fit together to make a cohesive story. Apparently I’m in the minority because people are raving about it, but honestly what are they actually raving about? The story arc didn’t really go anywhere, and as a filler book, it didn’t really fill any missing gaps. So I’ll just be over here mourning the death of my favorite series.

Unpopular opinion here.

I have read many Amelia Hutchins books and I was awaiting this one with great expectation as book two ended on a huge cliffy.

Now I am all "what the heck did I read????".

Honestly I skimmed the second half of the book because:

1) I was really lost as in: who puts monsters and beasts of Greek mythology with Christian evil, archangels etc? Was I reading something from mythology/fae/demons or something else?

2) I did not like the overabundance of gore. At all. Some I can read about but here it was a permanent explosion of blodd, brains leaking out of skulls, guts displayed etc etc.

3) I did not like how Lena evolved. She was between "I don't care I am a badass b@tch then like a dog in heat (sorry but overdoing the "he is so hot I am all wet and I want to impale myself on ...." is just a deterrent for me) then all crying and hot mess;

4) Either I am dumb either the plot and twists did not make any sense! Unbelievable explanations as to why she was what she was, why "he" was killed, how she was created were just confusing a a hot mess. Honestly it was like reading a foreign language. I had to reread some passages yet did not grasp it at all.

It really saddens me to write such review as I am not usually very hard to please. I always try to find something positive about the book as I am conscious of the work authors put in their writing but once again WHAT DID I READ????? What did Amelia do here? Am I missing the whole point? Am I completely mistaken? Maybe as no one is perfect but at the end of the day it was just not for me.

Will I still read Amelia's books?

Well not this series I've lost interest (that's a pity because I loved the first two books). Her other books maybe. This is the first time that she's disappointed me.

Now as this story gets many good ratings, don't let this review deter you but make up your own mind.

4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

“Life wasn’t easy; it wasn’t something you could win. You went through the motions, the wins, the losses, the hardships, and the difficulties that forged you into what you would become. You would get knocked down, and I had. It wasn’t about getting knocked down; it was about getting back up and being stronger, smarter than I had been when the world shifted from beneath me. You could either stay down, or you got back up. You could either let it forge you into something colder, smaller, or you grew from what you endured. I had endured, I’d sacrificed, and I’d gotten back up because, for me, it was the only option I could see.”

I couldn't stand Lena. Yes she is now a badass especially in her current state but I really really hate her stubbornness and being a martyr. Then she will remind Lucian repeatedly that she tried to save the world, oh come on 🙄.

Speaking of Lucian, what are you?!🙄😭🤯 This is one of the reasons I keep going in this series and since Amelia wrote this I know she will make this series worth reading until the very end. Still the suspense is killing me😩😭

Also, I really really wish that in their next book that they work together against Lucifer. As in fight together cause I felt like its only Lena who’s fighting Lucifer 🙏🏻 I also want to see more of Lucian in action 🥰

All in all still it was still a good read, can’t wait for the last book in the series 🤗

I'm going to attempt to write this review and not fill it with gibberish. In all honestly, I feel like a fish. My mouth is opening and closing and I'm at a loss for words. I can write and praise Amelia on her brilliance, as writer, all day but I think she has outdone herself with this book.
Becoming His Monster is beguiling and intense. You will become enraptured from the moment you start reading. I dont want to give any spoilers away but Lena is "fire and whiskey". The best way I can possibly describe how fierce she is, is she is a pheonix emerging from the ashes.
This book will knock you on your ass and take your breath away. The storyline is raw and dark. You heart will ache and your mind will be in a tailspin. This is not a fluffy romance so if that's what your looking for go somewhere else, pick another book. This book is brutal. It will tear you down and put you back together. It's a wild and rough ride but so delicious and addictive.
Buy read it and enjoy!

Confusing beginning. Boring middle that dragged on and on — they just kept going over the same things again and again. Great ending.

The thing with Amelia Hutchins is that she writes great stories, but if you read her books back to back, they all just kind of start to blend together. All the characters are basically the same. The same phrases are constantly used throughout each book and series (she loves to say that things are “bare bones”). She also tends to make the same grammatical mistakes throughout her books. It gets to be kind of repetitive if you read her books back to back. Even though this ended on a cliffhanger and I want to know what happens next, I think I need an Amelia Hutchins break.

This book was seriously disappointing. I was really excited for it, but had to force myself to finish it. Usually I'm at the edge of my seat. Some parts were really hard to follow, it was hard to tell which characters were taking. I'm hoping the next book is much better because I really do enjoy most of Amelia's books.

Ugh the things I need to say.. I was extremely excited for this book when it finally came. Usually when I’m that excited I read it In one sitting. Not in this case. I was let down so hard! I forced myself to finish it. The first half the book was just the same stuff repeated over and over again. The best part of the book was the last couple chapters! Honestly she could of made it a 150 pg book if she took out everything she wrote a thousand times. I have loved all her book but this one is my least favorite. I’m going to finish the series when the time comes but I definitely will not be rereading this one.

Edited to put this behind the spoiler blinds. I don't find it spoilery, but if you're a monster (lolls, puns) and read through all the books reviews before picking up the first book, like someone commented below, then I guess this is for you, sunshine.

Also note, I totally love Amelia and her worlds and am an avid fan. But I'm definitely not a fan of this particular series annnddd I don't hide it. However, no one writes paranormal erotica quite like Amelia so please check out alllll her other series. Annnnnd here we go!

Eeek, unpopular opinion warning!

I found this book mediocre - GASP - and I fell out of love with Lena - SHOCK -(was I ever really in love?) to the point that I almost DNFed it - HORROR.

This was a 2.5ish star for me and I really, really didn’t want it to be. However, as I DNFed Syd and Ryder’s last book, I’m also not surprised.

What did it for me:
Loved Spyder in this - wish he was in it more.
Enjoyed Lucian and the mystery surrounding what he is.
Characters dying off, albeit useless ones but still. I really enjoy how Amelia has no qualms with offing people, and not just nameless/faceless people - people who mean something to the main characters.
Hades - I really wanted him to get his socks off with Lena. And Spyder. Maaaybe at the same time 😍
How Amelia ties in her other story arcs seamlessly
That ending with Death and Lucian
The cover because it’s great

Why I almost DNFed this:
I grew to thoroughly dislike Lena and no longer understood her character. I found that she was constantly on repeat and annoyingly so. I felt like all she did was constantly remind everyone that she died for everyone (the new Jesus) and that she lost her baby because of it. I honestly don’t think she said much else that added to the plot. Like, ever. And for someone who was brought back not feeling anything, bitch sure felt a lot. Which left me confused because she’s telling everyone she doesn’t feel shit, however she’s completely washed over with emotion.

OH! And the sex that is supposed to teach her control?! The fuuuuck? Bitch didn’t learn squat except learning which toys and holes she liked. She can learn how to release her wings, ONCE, and suddenly she can control her power and be all, my word, man, I think I’ve got it! NO! Sit down.

AND I also found Lucian on repeat. All he did was lament on how Lena was his. Again, his conversation throughout the book added nothing to the story except for the last page at the end. The.last.page.

*breathes*

I haven’t decided if I’ll pick up the next. The last bit has truly peaked my curiosity but I honestly am not sure if it’s enough.

3.5 I liked this book... just not as much as the others. Finished this book a little bit ago and I feel as if I have gained no knew knowledge. It felt as if it was one of those dreaded filler books that just extends the series, kind of needed but not really because it could have been apart of the pervious of next book. Parts of the story were needed but the majority was just... I can't believe I am saying this...boring. We did learn about what Lena is but still nothing about what Lucian is. Much of this book was Lena repeatedly telling us the same things over and over again. Honestly it got kind of boring. Yes you went through something bad and got stronger because of it and yes you are trying to protect everyone and trying to push people away and on and on and on and on and on and on. Still a great read but I guess I was just expecting more. The last couple of chapters with the exception of the chapter about what Lena is was pretty much the only parts of the book that excited me. Especially that last chapter with Lucian speaking. Waiting for the next book...

Reread, originally read 1/2019. And once again this book kicks ass. Loved it! Had to do a quick reread
Since the new book came out yesterday.
4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Stars! Yas! This just getting better and better. I loved it. I was hoping Lucian would have lost his shit when that thing happened to Lena, I was just bracing for him to fuck shit up, but he kept his cool. Shame, maybe next time. I really want to see him loose his cool. His dominant side is all kinds of sexy. I guess we are not done with this series yet, not with that ending. Can’t wait for the next one.

So after the dramatic conclusion In the previous book we now see Lena reborn and she's more powerful than ever. She is now immortal and more than a match for Lucian in every single way.
She's altered and her internal emotions are turbulent she's also naturally drowning in all of this anger and pain which is now her predominant state. There's disbelief from all fronts including Lucian that she is who she claims but also jubilance and some fear that she's returned so different.

This had a different flavour than previous books the apocalyptic result of Lena entering hell previously means that the earth is now a battleground with all sorts of creatures both known and unknown preying on the inhabitants and the good guys seem to be barely holding their own.

This had a lot of fighting and so much loss it was such an emotional heart-wrenching one the heat was amped and the pace was fast and that finale WTH!!! I'm so invested in the outcome of this so I'm glad I don't have to wait. This series is amazing and I highly recommend reading.

I love this series and Fae Chronicles. The storyline is amazing.

Normally, I blow through these books, and cannot put them down. However, with Becoming His Monster (Book 3 of SWM), the first half of the book felt repetitive, so focused on events from Book 2 that it felt like there was almost no forward development until I got over 50% of the way through the book. Don’t get me wrong, the characters, particularly Lena, have a right to feel how they do over these events, but it made the story feel stalled. Lena is so focused on her new self and it’s almost entirely focused about that. Repetitive. Repetitive. Repetitive. This book was a lot of filler and had parts that were boring. There was minimal development that took us further from where we ended book 2.

The second half picked up the pace a bit and I enjoyed the story overall and I am still excited to see where it goes.

Final note... I was a little disappointed in the number of typos and other mistakes that should have been caught during editing. Also a few transitions that felt off or awkward. I understand it won’t be perfect, but there were more errors than I expected.

Overall, the series I would give 4 stars because I like the creativity or the story and it is usually a fun read, but this book I wasn’t in love with like the other two.

"You know shes's mine right? I don't envy fighting you for her, brother."

SPOILERS!

Lucian, Lucian, Lucian. I cant get enough of him! These Monster's books are my favorite in this Fae Chronicles world. What is Lucian? I keep trying to figure it out and clearly he's something bad ass and scary considering Lena's reaction.

I really enjoying seeing everyone from the other books work together, but is anyone else annoyed by the female characters? Syn annoys me and so does Lena. Lena tried a little too hard to prove she as "bad ass" or "Heartless", or "not the same girl anymore" but then she'd turn around and do something that proved the complete opposite.

And if I had a dollar for every time she choose to remind someone that she "sacrificed herself to save the world" I might be a millionaire. We get it Lena, but shit is still crumbling.

I don't know when the next Monster's book will be out but I cant wait to see how Lena reacts to Lucian getting their son back. And more than anything I'm ready to learn WTF Lucian is!

4/5 🌟’s

I Need the next book.... WHAT IS LUCIAN????? I have a few theories one more than others but then that wouldn't explain spyder so im stumped......

This threw hand grenades at you as you wipe of dirt from the last blast each issuing a killing blow..... and another ending that leaves alot unsaid.

Lena is back but not as she was she is something stronger and more brutal.....

I do find these books good, not fae chronicle standards as they are very very dark and believing characters could truly love each other is very hard, making any real chemistry for me just about sex, where as with Syn and Ryder you felt true love before professions... Lucian and Lena push each other away in a rather juvenile fashion alot of the time.

But the book is moreish you wont be able to put it down.

4 stars across the board….⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Maybe 3 times really is a charm….I tried Playing with Monsters 2 other times and I just couldn’t get into it… well I’m glad I tried it again, because I ended up enjoying the whole series! I forgot how much I miss Paranormal romance books..

All I have to say is….”where can I get a Lucian?” because….

The series is hotter then hell so be ready for a lot of mega hotness!

Audiobook review: Aiden Snow did incredible job narrating this book…his voice was sexy as sin! I wish he has more chapters in the series.
Eva Amar was just meh… she sounded too much like a robot and didn’t really have any emotion in her voice. I wasn’t too impressed with her.

Edit:August 10 2019:

Bringing this down by a star.

I understand Lena has been brought back to not care about anything except Lucian but a character who doesn’t care about anything is a boring one and a character who only cares for her lover is aggravating.

And I’m tired of hearing things like i want to drink their blood and dance in it from Lena. It’s overdone. I don’t take her seriously anymore. I actually prefer her in the first book now sigh. It was believable, interesting and realistic. This is too much. :/

“You really think she will forgive what you have done?”
“I think when she figures it out, it won’t matter.”

The feelings I have for this series are intense. Like, intensely confusing. The writing is, as always, terrible. The editing is terrible. The setting is terrible. The dialogue is cheesy and unrealistic. Or should be. I also hate books that end the way Sleeping with Monsters did. I'm willing to let it all go because somehow, I love these irritating characters enough that I just want them to be happy.

I waited months to find out what would happen to Lucian and Lena, and what Lucian really was. After reading hundreds of pages, I still don’t know. To not find out after so much reading is exhausting.

And Josh! After three books of mourning for her brother, Lena is reunited with him at last... to barely have a single conversation with him. For three books, I wondered what this brother could've been like to inspire such love and grief from those around him. I've met him... and I still don't get it. Not because he's an undeserving person. No, because I just don't know him.

This brings up another point of mine: where are the side characters? The relationship between Lena and Lucian dominated the entire book to the point none of Lena's other relationships were allowed page time. Besides Lucian, Spyder, Lucifer and Hades, Lena has almost no page time with anyone else. Her friends are completely non-existent. Not once was Kat and Dax-is that his name?- mentioned. They were laughably absent in the other books but they've disappeared off the face of the planet now. What happened? Did they die in the apocalypse? I'm curious.

Her family is hardly mentioned.

Despite the dramatic events in Sleeping with Monsters, Lena and Lucian have essentially the same relationship. Makes sense since both characters are the same. Lucian is still deceitful and unthoughtful. He makes decisions for Lena that have enormous consequences in her life and expects her to deal with it. Lena is better at standing up for herself in this book, but she still ultimately caves to his whims and desires.

At least there is less confusion on jealousy and other trivial issues. We always knew these two were endgame and ending the subplots we knew would go nowhere was a relief.

It was lovely to see her finally sort some shit out, but she and Lucian still need to have a proper talk about the way he treated her in Sleeping with Monsters. I feel like it was brushed over, but maybe she doesn’t have the courage to fully bring it up. When she does mention something of it, he glares and storms off or changes the subject. There’s no clear apology, just a “I didn’t want that to happen to you”. He does explain he believed he was protecting her by rejecting her, but considering amount of pain he caused, I believe some acknowledgement was required. He got off too easily.

The story was repetitive, filled with too many inner monologues. The other books in this series suffer the same problem, but it’s never been this bad before. As a reader, it’s nice to feel what the character is feeling instead of being told what the character is feeling every second in an attempt to make us feel the same thing.

That all being said…There’s something about Amelia Hutchin’s storytelling that I can’t resist. The characters are so maddening, but always so riveting. There's something about her writing that sucks readers in and doesn't let go. I can’t leave without reading the end.

And finding out what Lucian is. Because I still don't know.

I can't believe it took me over a year to re-read this series. 🤦‍♀️ Still absolutely loved them.

I’m not gonna lie…. I AM STRUGGLING. When I agreed to buddy read this mammoth undertaking of the Fae Chronicles, Playing with Monsters, and Elite Guards reading extravaganza… I was a smidge apprehensive… I have issues, and I knew I would obsess until the task was complete. But my bestie was all “we got this bitch” so we took off like this….

Things started to go to shit around the fifth book.

By the seventh, my former-BFF abandoned me… in the buddy read that was her idea…

Now I’m sitting at the 11th book (roughly 4000+ pages in) and it’s a shit show. My house is dirty… I’m barely sleeping… and I haven’t seen the gym in a week.

Basically, I’m not on my A-game and I feel like I have zero patience… I want to be fair, but I’m afraid I’m going to sound bitchy… so keep that in mind. The good news is that anyone this deep into the storyline is committed, so who cares what I think… here goes…

** This will have spoilers from the previous books (must be read in order) and some new spoiler-y stuff. I’ll try to be vague but proceed with caution and 🛑if you want to go in completely blind. **

50 Shades of Fury… Oh My

Unlike almost everyone I know; I don’t find Ryder the end all be all man-meat of this book sandwich. I have always been Team Lucian… I find him more mature and way cooler. :) So, I REALLY wanted to like this, and I did, but I can’t say I LOVED it.

“I am the beast, the monster that kills and destroys other monsters, Lena. I am judge, jury, and executioner to immortals. So fuck me like you hate me because I’m about to do the same to you.”

As I’ve said before, IMO, this series is not largely affected by the Fae Chronicles storyline. They show up some, but they never really do anything on the human side unlike Lucian and Spyder who are quite active on their side. So, we pretty much pick up where Sleeping with Monsters left off even though we read two books in-between. Lena killed herself to save her sister and protect Lucian from having to kill their son who was destined to destroy the world. Hell’s gates have opened, Lucifer and Hell’s creatures are loose. If you’ve read the blurb, it shouldn’t be a shocker that Lena is back from the dead which is good because I really liked her.

One thing I’ve noticed about this author is that her writing is VERY formulaic. Specifically, her characters which bleed into other series. For instance, in the first two Fae books, Syn’s “tough” is portrayed as her being snarky and argumentative. This carried over to Olivia (A Demon's Dark Embrace) and the Lena. (Playing with Monsters) Later, I started noticing the dialogue morphing into these wordy lecture/preachy monologues which then carried over to Claiming the Dragon King. Then, the characters started repeating the same things over and over again… I’ll circle back to this later. In Seducing Destiny I started getting “50 Shades of Grey” vibes with the spanking, blindfolds, and plugs. This has carried over BIGTIME to Becoming His Monster… from all their sexual training sessions led by a shirtless low-riding jeans wearing Lucian… to kneeling, spanking and yes sir… to the chest of toys and kinky necktie play… it’s a lot.

Unfortunately, Lucian Blackstone channeling Christian Grey was the least of my problems. My biggest obstacle was my inability to tolerate the writing style. I’m not saying the author can’t write, she can, it’s just that we’re not completely compatible. She’s wordy, her storylines are congested, and not super consistent. I’m an impatient reader, clutter gives me anxiety, and am meticulous. I can get onboard with a lot in Pretend-Land, but I need it to be unchanging. It’s not applicable to this book, but for example, if vampires can’t sift, it will drive me nutty if one randomly does because it fits the scene… or you forget. Or, if the Fae can survive being dissected and actually grow body parts back, (Ciara and Ristan) then it makes ZERO sense that another would die from a stab wound (Syn- Seducing Destiny) or almost die from a cut to the arm (Ciara-Dragon King- 1 week recovery) or a miscarriage (Syn-Unraveling Destiny-3 day recovery).

All these things have been slowly chipping away at my patience which is exasperated by the author continually adding more to the storyline… more books (Fae Chronicles, Elite Guards, Playing with Monsters, and now Wicked Knights) … more creatures (Witches, Fae, vampires, Gods-Goddesses, elves, shifters, Greek Mythology, demons, dragons and now Heaven-Hell, the devil and archangels) more characters (too many to name).

And her penchant for wordy, repetitive, and long-winded speeches which were in full force with my beloved Magdelena making her annoying AF. Lena is bitter and she wants us to know it, so she reminds us CONSTANTLY. She died to save the world, (that’s a wee bit of an exaggeration- the world’s still shit- partly because you opened the gates by walking into Hell) it was all Lucian’s fault because of his stupid game with that bitch Katarina, (technically he was preventing the apocalypse) my child is dead, (his kid too), it’s all your fault (see points 1 & 2). On and on Lena’s angry pity-party tirades repeated. It was overkill and got annoying. IMO, it defeats the purpose of making her a martyr if she’s just going to bitch about her sacrifice every other page. I kept picturing a cartoon Jesus coming down to tell us that he didn’t deserve to die to save us assholes. :)

Add in Spyder’s constant cringy “you owe me sex Kitty” and I was bummed. I’m not down with this dynamic. It doesn’t fit with Lucian’s personality and always portrays Lena a little trampy. I’m over it… it’d be like Ristan joining Ryder and Syn for a threesome… it just kind of craps all over their soulmate connection and I don't want to go there.

Bottom Line- Ok for me, I needed less sex and soapboxing and more action and affection.

I went into this one thinking it would definitely be a four or five star read. I’m sorry to say that I was so wrong.
2.5 stars and even then I feel like I’m being generous. I’m so disappointed because I really enjoyed the first two books. My only complaint then was the writing tended to be a bit repetitive. But that’s something I can handle. This one? My god. I felt like I was reading the same paragraph over and over. But then, I literally HAD to re-read some of the paragraphs over and over because the story became extremely muddled and confusing. The story didn’t flow, the scenes jumped around and there were too many characters popping up right and left to keep anyone straight. I felt lost during most of it. But my biggest issue was the fact that there were multiple missed words, spelling errors, and grammatical issues. It was extremely wordy and, yes, repetitive. Cleary there was no developmental editing or even basic copy editing. I honestly felt like I was reading a draft and not a fully edited book. Amelia should get her money back because whoever edited this did a terrible job.

The only reason I even finished the book and rated it at all was because I was already invested in the story. It’s a great story with two strong lead characters. I really hope the next one isn’t as big of a let down as this one was. I’m hopeful. Please don’t let me down!
