Rate this book

Searching for calm waters in a turbulent life? In an increasingly complex world, the need to understand where you stand and where you are going is fundamental on the personal, organizational, and societal level.

A. I. Shoukry—author of the bestselling book In or Out—introduces us to his innovative concept; anchor system thinking.

You are a vessel in the sea of life. Whether you like it or not, whether you float or sink, stand still or move forward, you are always anchored or searching for an anchor. And it’s better to know your anchor points than to be anchored without knowing. If you think you are floating freely, think again. Do you know your anchor points?

Anchor system thinking can be applied as a situational analysis tool on the personal, organizational, social, and even national levels. Anchor system thinking can, therefore, be used for problem-solving and strategic planning for personal, business, political, societal, geopolitical, or relational dilemmas.

In this short, insightful book, you will:
-    Discover how to think using the anchor system thinking concept.
-    Master anchor system thinking and its application on the personal, organizational, and societal levels.
-    Understand various anchor points and how are we all anchored to location, time, social networks, and entities.
-    Learn how to draw anchor maps for yourself, your organization, and society to understand your current status.
-    Solve problems on the personal, organizational, and social level using anchor system thinking.
-    Know how to be a reliable anchor point for others and excel at it.
-    Practice the proactive anchoring technique for strategic future planning for yourself, your organization, and society.

I wanted to like this book more than I did. The title describes perfectly the kind of book I’m looking for, but this wasn’t exactly right.

The concept is fascinating and useful, the writing is catchy and informative, but there needs to be a little more ‘meat’ on the bones - this feels like the second sketch of a good concept.

I enjoyed reading this book, found it interesting how the author provides us with so many ways in which we are anchored through out our lives (past/present and future)I especially liked how he provided an actual guideline for readers to actually sit down and think about ourselves and our world around us. I definitely reflected on myself and how I can better my life. I recommend reading this book for a better/ deeper understanding of ourselves and the world around us using the Anchor System Thinking.

I always enjoy a good philosophy book, much to the dismay of family members - because most philosophy is completely incomprehensible to normal folk.
Thankfully, Dr. Shoukry has accomplished a unicorn feat - he has presented a valuable discussion in philosophy, but communicated in a practical, accessible way.
The Dalai Lama declared that critical thinking is the most needed tool for our society today, and Dr. Shoukry has shared a system for critical thinking explained in simple terms without talking down to his audience. This book was full of eye-opening moments which, although impressive enough for adults, I was able to explain to my own kids. That is not a simple task.
Anchor thinking is a way to create a personal network of decision gates, so we can make choices consistent with our personal morals, ethics, and values. But, and I thought this was excellent, it can also be easily applied to a group, a business, or even an executive making decisions regarding how to proceed on a brand he or she is developing.
By evaluating the relationships of the decision-making entity, by establishing what is truly important and recognizing what is actually controlled or not, decisions can be made for the best interests and healthiest outcomes of those involved.
This was excellent, and a concise introduction for the kind of decision-making of which we need more in the world today.

Anchor System Thinking is a relatively short book and a quick read, yet it introduces a certain thought process that can prove to be an excellent tool especially in situational analysis.

Through simple language and organized outline , which are trademark in Shoukry's writing, he once again presents us with a practical tool for implementation of an abstract concept.

In certain places, the book gave a bit too many examples that left me with a feeling of being unfocused from following too many trains of thought.

But once I finished and grasped the whole idea of the author, the possible applications of this tool, especially on the introspective level, was a thought provoking lesson.

Quite often in life we are held back by invisible anchors that hold us down. I think that this book teaches an excellent method on how to discover these anchors in order to set ourselves free from them ... And for this, I highly recommend reading this book and wish to thank the author for this valuable addition.

Even if you try to clear your mind, you will be thinking of clearing your mind. Your mind is a constant thing that need to be filled with something. There is series of questions why we think of the very thing we think.

You may be anchored by something and for others. How to use the anchor system? There are 3 anchor - The past, the present and the future. We will always be anchored to three of this separate anchors.

The thoughts in this book are deep explained with very simple language. Despite the simplicity; this book is type that need papers and pen to create like mind map of its thoughts which is a common feature of author's books.

Odd, Incoherent Mishmash of Ideas

The title and subtitle of this book make you think that it's going to be a hard-hitting book about the topics in the subtitle. Unfortunately, that is not the case. As happens in much nonfiction today, the author inserts himself into the book in a variety of places, somewhat weakening the message. But that isn't the only problem. The message itself seems convoluted. The author seems to go off on tangents despite setting out a clear roadmap for himself with the chapter ideas and structure. These tangents only peripherally relate to this philosophy of thinking—or may not do so at all. By the way, despite the highfalutin’ title of the book and the words of the subtitle, this book is actually just a personal philosophy that the author developed; using phrases like “situational analysis” and “strategic planning” makes you think this will be deeper than it is. The anchor metaphor was stretched so thin at times (and perhaps even beaten to death) that I actually couldn't see the relationship between what he was talking about and the idea of anchoring at times. Personally, I do not see how this book lives up to the promise of its subtitle or the description. As such, I cannot recommend this book.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Very disappointing. To be straight up to me it feels like a money grab with flash title and flashy front cover. It terms of the structuring of the chapters and content it is just way below the bar. I mean, there is not much content to speak of and the content that is present is poorly structured. So what is the content? It is basically basic system thinking combined with his ground breaking analogy of a ship on the sea where the person is the ship and the medium is his surrounding. This is not ground breaking at all. It is basically borrowed from Jung and he is doing piss poor job (and I’m putting it very lightly here). It the most disasterous part of all of it: he has only three references at the end of the book which is wikipedia, Webster and Oxford dictionary. That sums this book up.
