This was a thoroughly enjoyable read. Carol Colyer is an excellent author.

This book is about a woman, Rose McCarthy Doherty, that is forced to leave her home. It is a time when women have very little rights if any. She was forced to marry a man that she didn't love by her Mother who thought would give her the good life. But, he was a no account low life, and when he died she found that he had forged her name to a document that allowed him to use up her inheritance without her knowing. She's owns 1/3 of the house she is lives in. A home that she loves. She is forced to sell but women are not allowed to cash checks and women are not allowed to handle their own financial affairs. Nor, can women own land or even take part in court proceedings even as a witness. She goes to California to find her last living male relative.

The book is also about a man, Alejandro O'Connor (Alex), who joins the Army to fight in the war between the states. He sees a lot of death in the war some of them he feels responsible for. He is also pushed by his brother into being the town marshal for a new town called Mahoka Hills. A job that he doesn't really want. He is forced to take action against criminals that causes some of them to be killed.

An attraction and romance ensues between the two of them. The two must conquer their own inner demons in order to have a chance at a future together.

Rose gets involved in the Women's Suffrage movement getting to know such suffrage movement notables as Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Ellen Clark Sargent. One of the things I like about the book is that it recognizes the connection between the Women's Temperance Society and the Women's Suffrage movement.

A lot of people do not understand the important part the Women's Temperance Society and that it is the true beginning of the women's rights movement. In most books and TV shows and movies a lot of fun is made of the Temperance Societies; but they were a very important to Women's rights. It was born out of the fact that many men would go to the saloons and drink up all of their money. Many of them would come home drunk and beat on their wives and children. Because they lost a lot of their money drinking and gambling many women and children would find themselves homeless and starving as a result.

Also as a genealogists when tracing family history I have found especially in looking at wills and land records you only find the wife's first name. No mention is made of her parentage, her name. Because they didn't directly inherit. Usually they would be put in the care of a male relative and he would handle her inheritance and financial affairs. He could do as he liked. There wasn't anything she could do about it.

This book was well written and certainly addressed the concerns of women; but also addressed other matters such as racism and other abuses that many people faced in those days. But it also spoke of the people who were at the forefront of trying to do something to right those various wrongs, both women and men.

Second Chances

Alex, the son of a affluent and wealthy parents joins the Army and serves with distinction as a Volunteer. He turns down the offer of a commission in the regular army when his time of service is ended because he doesn't believe that the army shouldn't be slaughtering Indians. He travels around the country for three years before returning home to California.
Rose 🌹is widowed after almost ten years of marriage to a wicked, lying, cheating man that had forged her signature to steal her inheritance and finds herself in dire straits. She decides to search out her cousin and hopes to make a new life for herself with him as women at that time weren't allowed to own property of any kind or even do their own banking.
Rose 🌹 meets Alex on the stagecoach ride to the town where he is the Marshall and where her cousin lives. Upon arriving, she finds that her cousin had been killed and finds herself debating on what she's going to be able to do to survive.
Thus begins the adventures of Alex and Rose 🌹through stagecoach robbery and her future journalism career writing for a Sacramento newspaper and the women's suffrage movement.

This was the most interesting book of the author’s series. The plot has a thorough structure, with diversity (Hero is a Spanish Lord) and well-presented views on politics, women’s rights, history of the era, fashion and landscapes. The author also takes a stand on Native American’s side but without making it obvious to the reader. We also get a glimpse of Shaman mysticism, a fascinating addition. The only negative I can find is the long thought process of heroine that gets tiring at some point.
It didn’t leave me wondering of plot-holes like her other books. I cannot think of something to change or add. Heroine’s thought process gets a little tiring for my taste but it is a genre addressing to women after all. The title is misleading. Their love is kept apart by fears, not lies. Other than that, a good read!

CAPTIVATING DELIGHT!!!
Wow! Talk about a bumpy ride. One intriguing tale that hooks you from the start and reels you in for the duration. All the drama, uncertainty and suspense make for one enjoyable experience. A whirlwind of actions and events that bring all of your emotions swirling drawing you in deeper and deeper. The characters are strong and well developed with on point personalities that bend and flow. The scenes are vivid and breathtaking in the realistic true to life form. Twists and turns abound with unexpected surprises that brings this bad boy alive beautifully before your eyes. Fantastic job Carol, thanks for sharing this awesome read with us.

This story is definitely not about a grand romance. The attraction between these two is palpable, but their is a stiffness that is portrayed between the couple or maybe it is the writing. It remains even after the couple comes to an understanding. Warning: This is a suffragist novel and views are very distorted to what was actually happening in the west with women in 1874. The Married Women's Property act was passed in 1870 and would have allowed Rose to cash her check at any bank.

A Love Kept Apart by Lies

I received an ARC of this book from the author, Carol Colyer, and this is my voluntary and honest review. This is a great historical western and a clean romance between Alex and Rose. This book is well written and the descriptions of the settings are so vivid that I actually felt like I was a part of the story. Be sure to read the extended epilogue that you can get free access to at the end of the book.

Widow Rose McCarthy Doherty needs a man's help to cash the check the bank gave her for her home, as women were not allowed to do so at that time. Town Marshal of Mahoka Hills Alejandro O'Connor or Alex as most people call him meets her and he decides to help. A well written story that kept me turning pages to find out how things turn out.

This is a very enjoyable, clean western romance. With no place else to go, Rose heads west to her California cousin; she plans to exercise her wide independent streak. Alex is Marshall of his family’s new town; it’s a dirty job but someone honest needs to do it. And then the fireworks begin!

Very interesting title but a great story behind it.

I was kept in suspense so many times I loved all the twists and turns. Through this story however I have decided I would not have wanted to live at that time. It truly was a man's world. Loved the story and couldn't put it down.

A wonderful story. It's about the journey of a woman movement. Before women could own land or be in charge of their money. I recommend this book.
