Lady Jane is in desperate need of 1,000 pounds to pay off her son’s gambling debt. But how can she come up with the money without attracting attention to her precarious situation? The answer stares her straight in the face when she stumbles upon a painting Shaldon, the Spy Lord, covets to reap revenge on an old enemy. Can she get away with stealing a prized possession from Shaldon or will she become his next target for revenge when he discovers it and her gone?

Shaldon wants Lady Jane under his roof and in his bed. Her independent spirit awakens emotions dormant for many years. When she and his painting disappear, he believes his old rival, the Duque, has captured them both. He does some digging and realizes Lady Jane is right under his nose. But why would she need to steal it? The more he uncovers, the more his true feelings for her surface. He loves her. His new mission: to prove to her he’s a changed man. Can he leave his past life behind and forge a new future with Lady Jane?

What a beautiful mature romance by one of my favourite Regency romance authors. Not only does this include an older couple, both past their prime (according to the Ton), but the children of both Jane and Shaldon help to bring these two together.

The best part, for me, is the bantering between Lady Jane and Shaldon. She certainly keeps him on his toes and with one look, one touch, he unleashes passion in her she never knew existed. They hold tight to their secrets, afraid to reveal them, but when both of their lives are at stake, they’ll have no choice but to succumb to the love they share.

There’s plenty of action, spy intrigue and suspense. There’s even a duel with a surprise participant. I whipped through the pages as fast as possible because I simply needed to know what happened next.

This is book five in the Sons of the Spy Lord series yet it can be read as a standalone. I haven’t read the other books in the series and I didn’t have any trouble understanding what was going on and the multitude of characters.

If you’re looking for a romantic suspense set in the Regency era, pick this up today. If you’re looking for a historical romance with a mature couple, you’ll love Avenging the Earl’s Lady.

Favorite Character/Quote: Lady Jane. From the first page, I connected with her spirit and fortitude. She’s gone through so much and has a right to hate Shaldon yet she can’t help but fall in love with him. Her strength lies in her love for both her son and for Shaldon. She’s his equal in every way and I loved every minute of her story.

I liked that this book featured an older couple as the hero and heroine and enjoyed some of their antics, but i found myself a little lost at times with the events of the past books that i didn't know off. A short and easy read to pick when you want a funny and romantic story.

Definitely Not a Standalone

I will admit to feeling cast adrift for quite a while in this book. It is the fifth book of the series, and I hadn't read any previous ones, so I felt I was dropped completely in the middle of a bigger story about which I knew nothing. The author didn't say in the description that this wasn't a standalone and that you really did have to read the other books to understand what was going on in this one. I really think authors should do that. For romances in particular, just because a book is in a series doesn't mean that it is part of an episodic set of novels. Usually, in fact, in the books that I read, each book in a series is about a different couple and only marginally relates to a bigger story and may only peripherally mention characters from other books. So I really did feel confused about what was happening at first, who everybody was, and what their backstory was. Literally, I did feel like I was plopped down in the middle of something because the author did state in multiple places that certain important events only happened just a few days or weeks prior. So, it would appear that this book was really just a continuation of the previous book with, perhaps, only a slight change of emphasis to make it about the main couple.

The one thing I did like about this book is that it featured an older couple as the hero and heroine. While they are not ancient, the hero is on the cusp of becoming a grandfather, and the heroine is trying to help her lackluster son get out of debt. Probably because I didn't know these characters from the other books, I found the hero a bit boorish and the heroine a bit naïve in the dealings with her son. Why would any woman give up so much and go to such lengths for someone who has made such a wreck of his life, even if she is his mother? She is definitely what we in modern times would call an enabler. I found myself not liking the story despite the fact that I usually do like romances with more mature couples, and I wonder if that is because I did not read previous books of the series. Definitely, do not let this be the first book you read of the series; you need to have read the other books to make any sense of it.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

The Earl of Shaldon and Spymaster for the crown, has lived his life manipulating and venting revenge, while plying these trades to suit his wishes going so far as to also apply them amongst his family, much to their exasperation. Now that his children have settled into marriages of his satisfaction (and orchestration), further scheming in that regard complete, his focus has moved on. But in Avenging the Earl's Lady, the great Spymaster will soon find he has met his match in one Lady Jane Monfort. Lady Jane, living a frugal life, mostly from the charities of others, has been at Shaldon House for some time where the Earl has kept his eye on her. Now, injured from a previous encounter with the enemy, her ministrations of his wounds have awoken and he has found that his tender thoughts of Jane have grown stronger. But something is amiss with Lady Jane, her reaction to a letter sent by her solicitor has made her apprehensive. While Shaldon forms a plan to move the also injured enemy to London and return a sought after object d'art which he holds as vengeance to his country home; Kincaid, the spymaster's ever trustworthy operative senses something is afoot in Lady Jane's corner. Shaldon taken over by his new feelings dismisses any subterfuge only to find he has not read the signs accurately and discovers a very deep secret she is carrying while holding back secrets of his own.

Lady Jane Montfort desperately needs a large sum of money to pay her son’s gambling debt. So when she sees a painting, she steals it from the Earl of Shaldon, the Spy Lord. He, in the meantime, having settled down in his ways, wants Lady Jane under his roof and in his bed. Her strong independence is attractive to him. He can’t figure why she would need to steal his painting, however. Will he retaliate against her for the theft? Or is he looking to find a future with the woman who excites him?

I was unaware that this was Book 5, so I felt a bit lost starting with this one. However, I was able to follow along and found it well-written and the story line intriguing. Grab your copy and see what the future has in store for these two!

Can a spy fall in love?
In this book, that question will be answered. Lady Jane needs money and let's face it with a kid like that she really does not need enemies, but if she does what she planned there is a real good chance that is what will occur and as an enemy, she could have not picked the worse person. Then our spy finds his match in the lovely Lady Jane. An interesting book with such great characters loved the book. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.

A great Regency romance

Avenging the Earl's Lady is book five in the Sons of the Spy Lord series and the first I have read by this author. I really enjoyed this story and would love to read the rest of the series. Lady Jane and Shaldon, the Spy Lord, are great characters with maturity and their children on their side. They are very likable characters and their banter is amusing. The storyline is original and well written with action, intrigue, suspense, and passion.

I read and reviewed a copy of this book with no obligation.

Jane reminds me of myself because she fights and does what she has to for family, her son in fact that has a 1,000 dollar gambling debt and when Shaldon meets her, he starts to feel things that he has not felt in along time. When a portrait and lady Jane goes missing he thinks it's his enemy but he finds out she is closer than he thinks and then he realizes he loves her.

This is the first book I have read by this author and I did enjoy it apart from the fact that I don't really think it should be read as a stand-alone. There were so many things mentioned that as I hadn't read the previous books I was slightly confused and really felt I was missing something. I will read the other books and would advise that they are read in order to increase the pleasure of the stories.

Avenging the Earl’s Lady is the 5th book in the Sons of the Spy Lord series. I haven’t read the rest of the series but plan on doing so. The book grabbed your attention and held it until the end with all the suspense, drama, and twists. It included family members from previous books so I think reading the series from the beginning would be best.

A delightful story that sets two mature people together which I adored. She needs money quick to get her son out of trouble. He has a prized painting that would settle that debt, but can she get away with taking it?
Ingrigue, spies, suspense, an undeniable attraction and desire that two cannot deny. Everything I enjoy in a historical romantic suspense that had me captured until I turned the last page.
Loved it!

Jane and the Earl of Shaldon both have secrets and are dealing with dangerous people in this regency romance. Because this story takes place after others in the series, it was hard to follow at the beginning. I liked that the hero and heroine were older and had lived plenty of life experiences before they got together. There was plenty of suspense and mystery in this book.

At 14 years of age she bore a child out of wedlock. She is still paying for that in her late thirties.
Happy ever after is not meant for her or so she thinks.
But then a spymaster involves her into his plans
Good story line but somewhat confusing if you have not read the earlier books in the series.
