Born at the stroke of midnight, Raven Steele grew up in a home bordering a graveyard as old as time. Ghosts became her only friends and whispered tales of a world that existed between night and day. In this place, monsters roamed the lands, magic curled in the wind, and good and evil fought over the hearts and minds of humans. Desperate to not let those dark and brave creatures be forgotten, Raven wrote down the words of the ghosts, knowing their stories of triumph and sorrow would give strength and comfort to those in our world.
And so, when the sun sets, Raven retreats to the cemetery at the edge of the woods, where she sits and listens to the dead speak their tales of Rouen and all of its inhabitants. Because one day, our two worlds may collide, and when they do, we must be ready. For when their darkness bleeds into ours, we will be fighting for more than our lives. We will be battling for our souls.
Raven Steele is a pen name to USA Today's bestselling author Rachel McClellan.
*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.
Wow things are really getting deep now!! Briar is a prisoner after killing Silas. She goes through some tough stuff while in his care and things just get more crazy when she gets out thanks to some help from friends. Once out she starts on a rough downward spiral that I though t was going to end at rock bottom though I was pleasantly surprised by what did happen. Then you hit the end which is just full of twists that you will not see coming. An amazing urban fantasy novel that will keep your attention until the very last page. I really liked it so I give it 4/5 stars.
Since I wasn’t the biggest fan of the first book, I had no intention of reading the second. However I’m doing a reading challenge, and much to my dismay, this book fit into the task perfectly. So here we are.
I thought perhaps maybe the story would pick up and things would get better in the second novel. Sometimes that does happen in books. The first just sets up the world and the characters, but it’s the second that really starts to tell the story and things start getting good. I hoped that perhaps that may be the case with this series. Alas, I was wrong.
The second book was worse than the first! Why is that you may ask? Well the answer is simple; the MC, Briar, is a selfish bitch and I had a hard time connecting with her. Due to the way the last book ended, she's up a creek without a paddle. By the skin of her teeth, she barely gets through the situation alive, thanks to her friends, which she doesn’t deserve at all.
Now she's in the dog house for killing Silas and needs to work her way back up the ranks so she can kill Dominic. But Luke reveals to Briar that she can’t kill Dominic as he’s holding his brother, Jake, captive somewhere, and Luke needs to get info on where to find him from the Alpha before he can be eliminated.
Not to mention that BIG trouble is brewing, darkness is coming and it’s way more dangerous than Briar could’ve ever imagined. She knows this. Knows that by keeping Dominic alive more pieces of the puzzle may be solved and then She and Samira and everyone else can fight off this ancient evil.
And yet after knowing all this, the only thing she still thinks about is herself and what she wants. So much so, that her stupidity, her self-absorbed nature, gets someone killed. And sadly it was my favorite character that gets offed! The plot line then completely takes a nosedive because Briar starts knocking back Scorpion's Breath like it’s medicine.
The MC just keeps getting dumber and dumber! Then there’s a ton of drama because of how self-absorbed she is and her ‘woe is me!’ attitude spirals out of control to obscenely ridiculous proportions. Briar then thinks pushing everyone away is the safe and adult thing to do because she doesn’t want anyone else to get killed. But in actuality it’s a very stupid and juvenile move. The side characters do not deserve to be kept in the dark and treated like crap!
Yet for some reason they still help her out, even though she doesn’t deserve their kindness or friendship. I honestly don’t understand it! She treats them like shit and they still want to help her? It makes no sense! But anyways, the stupid MC gets the help that she needs to be a better and stronger person. Then after a secret is revealed, Briar finally learns just how strong she actually is! It’s really incredibly, unbelievably lame. Briar has miles long plot armor now! I’m shocked.
Then at the end there’s a showdown because the MC can’t keep her cool and doesn’t seem to care about her friends wants, needs or concerns. Briar only does what she wants to do and basically screws everyone over. Magically things don’t become as bad as they could’ve been, thanks to shifter rules. I can’t say I ever doubted that Briar would be victorious though. It’s so painfully obvious that she was never in any real danger. It’s pretty eye roll inducing. To sum it all up, this book was a disappointment.
As you can see I did not like this story, or this series to be more exact, and I have no intention of reading anymore of these novels. I’d rather dive into a tale where the MC actually deserves the title of ‘heroine’ and isn’t an utter twat to everyone else. There are far better books out there that are actually worth my time. Good riddance!

*Thoughts*
A Shifter's Rage is the second installment in authors Raven Steele & Ava Mason's Rouen Chronicles series. This story finds our protagonist, Briar, imprisoned by her nemesis, Dominic, Alpha of the Silver Claws pack, after she removed one of the men from her list of people she needs to kill in order to gain revenge for what they did to her entire family and her pack when she was a young girl. Having removed number 2, it now becomes a game of cat and mouse before she can attempt to take out the most dangerous man on her list.
Another book with a tag line that caught my eye and my brain said that I had to read this when I saw the tag line "I never go to bed angry. I stay awake and plot my revenge." I mean who wouldnt want to read this book after seeing that...lol Another good story with awesome characters.
Brutal and grim. We get the heroine being obnoxious and self centered and a sad death and some brutal scenes. I'm hopeful the next book shows more redeeming qualities since there's a major tie-up where she's concerned, and I was more than happy to have that go. I've found myself liking Angel, despite him being the big-bad, although her connection with Luke is the most potent. Full review to come
Wonderful, can’t believe I’ve finished another book in this series. Hopefully the next book will be out soon. Briar is totally fantastic, strong and beautiful. Received an ARC and reviewed because I love it.
This book just wasn't for me. The writing was fine and there was a good idea with some interesting characters but the unrelenting violence, torture, punishments, beatings was dreadful. I wouldn't use the word 'gritty' to describe it as in the blurb but rather gratuitous and offensive. Some scenarios such as with Lynx (avoiding spoilers) were appalling and completely unrealistic as to how they played out. Others such as the first visit to the other werewolf pack were just sickening. Awful.
A Shifter's Curse #1 - Another good series from one of my favorite authors, Rachel McClellan and even and with her name change to Raven Steele, she still remains in that category. This book is fast paced, action packed and well thought out. The storylines are interesting and add twists and kinks, but keep the reader glued to the pages. There's violence but it isn't graphically gory but clear what happened; the reader still can use their imagination. Yes, vulgar language but not continuous, here and there for emphasis.
The characters are developed enough for the reader to understand them and their motives. They run the gamut on personalities and types. The action has a real feeling to it, not the Hollywood garbage common today. With the author's clear, vivid descriptions the reader is racing along in a rollercoaster car that sometimes isn't on the tracks, which adds a lot of excitement to the story. I contacted the author to review her books and she hasn't disappointed me once. 5*
Shifter's Rage #2 - Ms. McClellan is one of my favorite authors and even with her name change to Raven Steele, she still remains in that category.
Like all of her previous books, this is fast paced, well written with well thought out storylines, some of which are completed in this book and some that set up the next book; not a cliffhanger. Her characters run the gamut from nice to typical to horrendous, complete with their own personalities. The action scenes run true, no Hollywood silliness, and there's violence but not graphic gory, just clear cut. The reader gets the picture and feels the pain, but their imagination is allowed to exist. The author does a wonderful job with her clear, vivid descriptions. There is sexual tension and some vulgar language but not in every sentence, paragraph or page.
Here and there will be a surprise twist out of the blue; there are still surprise kinks and actions, but the twists add a depth to the usual shifter/vampire/witch theme. Ms. McClellan makes her stories her own and not copies of what everyone else is doing. It is easy to get lost in the intrigue and suspense and the revenge, while still seeing good. I contacted the author to review her books a long time ago and haven't read a bad book in the last two years. 5*
I'm really torn on this second book of the series. It's a good story and very well written on one hand but on the other, well, I was constantly tense. I Spoilers ahead We start this book w briar having been imprisoned for weeks after killing silas. She is freed and she is still hell bent on proving to Dominic she is worth being in his team and does so by doing all these terrible things and getting people killed. During all this she has become a serious drug addict that can't function without it being talked about a lot (note: besides revenge, it is one of the biggest focal points in the story IMO). There is some good news to that though because it shows just how bad scorpion breath is but like I said, her being all druggied out and making had decisions for practically the whole book had me really tense. Relief comes in subtle ways. We see a growing relationship between broad and luke. We also finally have some insight into why like follows Dominic and a little into why samira has an interest as well; they all have something they need to uncover by allowing Dominic his reign of terror. I am also super intrigued by the vampire Angel - he seems to really care for Briar and I find myself hoping for a love triangle to include him. Alas, there is no sex (but briar and I can dream right?!). Again, it is a good book, well written, but also brace yourself for some feelings (especially those triggered by drug addiction, deaths of loved ones, people who do bad things for the greater good, and violence).
Fast paced, action packed and full of unexpected surprised
This is the second book in the Rouen Chronicles series and does need to be read after Book #1. This story picks up fairly close to the end of that book, with Briar in captivity and Dominic looking to destroy her. The book then twists and turns through quite a few startling events, one of which gutted me and let to Briar making some foolish choices.
Her bond with Luke continues to grow, though they still haven't got down and dirty! However a vampire by the name of Angel (*swoon*) adds an unexpected element to the plot. There is still a character I'm not totally sure I trust /. We find out more about the threat that is growing for both paranormals and humans, but there is still a long way left before this threat is neutralised.
My attention was held from the very first to the very last line. The writing flows so smoothly, the characters are well crafted and multifaceted. Within the pages we find intrigue, lies and secrets along with some long hidden truths being revealed. A Shifter's Rage is a wonderful follow up to A Shifter's Curse and I am massively looking forward to reading Book 3.
I received an ARC for this book and boy was I ever so glad to continue the journey! After the ending in the first book, I could not wait to see what happened to my girl.... The second installment did not disappoint. I felt so many different things reading this book. It was like I was going through this painful soul wrenching journey with Briar. I honestly thought about putting the book down because it hurt to see her making so many crazy, stupid, human mistakes. But I forged on... The main character is complex. She is bad ass and so vulnerable at the same time. I am getting a bit frustrated because I want her to get it on with her love interest... ugh. I can't wait to see her power as it grows. I want to see them take on the bad guy... whoever he is.... I have enjoyed everything Ava has written and I really look forward to seeing where she takes the rag-tag group of Rouen good guys in this series. Every one of them are endearing. I am even enjoying the strange dynamic between Briar and her sensual vamp buddy. Looking forward to the next books...
Okay... so i'm totally hooked on this series. I need the next book like right now please! Briar's story is amaziinnng! It's soo action packed and full of surprises and suspense. And I can't get over how vivid everything is. I really feel like this should be made into a movie. i would definitely watch this haha. I don't like to post spoilers in my reviews, because i believe it's always best to read it for yourself, it's so much better that way anyways. And let me tell you, you will not be disappointed. The first book was WOW, but this second one blew my mind! It's that good! I highly recommend this series. It's kind of like stepping into the rabbit hole for me... I'm in wonderland and i don't want to leave haha! The story is so GOOD!!! I received an ARC Copy of this book.
Oh my. So much happens. Shocked by some of the things that go on in this book. Briar really sink into a dark hole but the people who loves her brings her out. Angel is a mystery to me. I think he knows more that we know. Also Luke is so perfect. I like him the best. I hate that he left at the end when she got what he needed. She finally got revenge. Hated what happened to Ryder!! Also I think the uncle is acting weird I think he is going to betray Briar. Also I like the bond that seems to be developeing between some of the MC's and the pack. I really like Brier and cannot wait to see what happens next. I believe it all has to do with the blood she has hidden. Excited for the next book.

Holy wow! What an excellent follow-up to A Shifter's Curse! I think it was definitely better. And it had gotten so good. If you haven't read the first book, definitely do so and then pick up this one!
The character development was great. We learn more about many of the characters, though not all. I wish there had been more on Lynx and Samira. I feel like their stories are getting lost in every one else's, but overall the development is intriguing and definitely sucks you in.
This book has a ton of action. It's almost nonstop but at the same time still keeps the story going. It's not action for the sake of action. It's action because ther story demands it.
I can't express how brilliant this set of books are. I thought the first book was outstanding, but this books is an exceptional follow on. Reading these books is like watching a film, it flows like silk. The books are about wolf shifters, vampires and witches. I strongly advise you start with book one, as the story follows on where the last book finishes. If you like the Underworld films which is to do with vampires, with action and story lines and love. Then you will like these books, with the exception of wolf shifters being in the main role not vampires. Reading these stories is like watching the horror channel. There is violence and drugs, and manipulation and it is written beautifully. Recommended. 5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟.
I wasn't a huge fan of this book. I just didn't like Briar in this book at all, if it was the drugs or just her, I don't know. But I just feound her so annoying, and the fact that she constantly had to go to a fight alone because she was so 'so much stronger and better than everyone else' instead of waiting for back up.
I get that it was the drugs that made her do these things, but I would way that she has always been a bit rash in her decisions.
I also don't understand how it took her friends so long to see that she wasn't herself...
But I am glad that she finally killed Domenic and got her revenge.
After this book I've decided that I won't continue this series because I just wasn't into the story this time around...

Book one was spectacular but book 2 took you zero to sixty. This is now my favorite series! The characters are so well developed that it's hard to believe they aren't real people. No character is perfect and each has their flaws and issues. The story flows seamlessly and this is definitely not a book you will be able to walk away from. If you start to read, make sure you have the time to read it straight through. I know I was unable to sleep until I finished the entire book. I can't wait to see where book 3 goes. It kind of reminds me of a video game where each new boss battle gets more and more difficult. I can't wait to meet the big boss for book 3.
No spoilers of any kind included. This series just keeps getting better and better now I’m impatiently waiting for book three in this series. Anyway this book was freaking awesome which you probably already figured that out when I said I’m impatiently waiting for the next book. ;) Raven Steele and Ava Mason are definitely a awesome writing team because you can’t tell when one starts and the other ends in their blended books. So yes I most definitely do recommend this book but if you haven’t read the first book then I highly suggest that you do otherwise you will get really confused about who’s who and what’s what.
This second book is darker and grittier than the first in the series but still just as good. Briar is heading down a difficult path and she needs the love and friendship of those around her more than ever. But, will she push everyone close to her away? There were points in this book which really tugged at my heart. At one point I found myself unsuccessfully blinking back the tears whilst on public transport. I really enjoyed the twists and turns in the story in this book and the way we got to know other characters better. I'm looking forward to the release of the third book as am really enjoying this series so far. Five stars from me.
Intended to get her revenge no matter how much it cost to her, Briar was straying from the right path. Nightmares, doubts, and a heart-bleeding past she had not overcome was clawing her painfully. A story full of intense and exciting scenes, strong characters, dark emotions, action, suspense, violence and despair. Briar was struggling with and inner monster that kept me on edge. Felt with the protagonist, read eagerly expecting the worst but hoping for the best. I was caught in this story with its unexpected twists, intriguing characters and mystery that constantly insinuates itself. Liked this book that kept my attention all the time.
Revenge can be sweet. Blair has killed Silas and now has been imprisoned. She has to hope and rely on her friends to find her and get her out before she dies. One down one to go. Well I have to say I was surprised by the twist and turns that popped up . Blair is one strong alpha female with some kicking butt friends too. I enjoyed reading this book . It had me the moment I started and couldn't wait to see what was instore for these people. I now have to wait for the next book. I received an arc copy of this book.
I received an Arc and I am providing my honest review. This series is very dark and violent. Briar makes terrible, awful decisions that cause harm to others, including her friends. You get so involve with the characters, I still don't know if I trust her uncle. There is evil lurking and Briar must train to stop it. However that is the next book. In this book she gets her hearts desire but will it make her feel better? Even though it is dark I enjoyed reading the series and cannot wait for the next one coming in January. I would recommend this to all adults that like dark fantasy thrillers.
Holy Cow!! Book one in this series was fabulous and book 2 absolutely just blew me away. In order for Briar to exact her revenge she has to walk a fine line between deceit and truly becoming the dark she is pretending to be. The twist and turns in this dark story will grab readers right out of the gate with a continuation right from where book one left off. The characters, plot and story development is absolutely unbelievable. Hold on to your seats, Raven Steele and Ava Mason have created a rollercoaster of a ride.
A Shifter's Rage is fantastic. It's well written and thought out. There's a lot of depth to the characters. I really like Briar. She doesn't think she's special or strong but she is. Her story starts off as a revenge story but turns in to one about justice and what seems like prophecy. What seemed like Briar's biggest challenge was really small compared to what I believe she'll have to face in the coming books. Now that Briar has accepted who she is I look forward to seeing her grow as she learns more about her abilities. I also can't wait to find out where her journey takes her.
I'm loving this series! I'm hooked! I'm loving everything I'm reading, how everything is playing out. It keeps you on the edge ave makes it where you can't put it down. And there's so much to these characters, not just the heroine, that you just want- no, need- to know more about them all. I can't wait to discover more of them as I follow each book to its conclusion, all the way to the end. So start from the beginning and prepare to feel the need to immerse yourself in the people and in their world.
Briar will stop at nothing to work herself into a position to finish her revenge. In doing so, it may cost her soo much more than she’s aware of, or wants to lose. Finding people to care about has never hurt so much, and the need to escape the pain of it and her past may destroy her. The characters find familiar grooves to move in, and still make the story interesting, and pull you into their dance. Everyone wants to be a fighter like Briar, but who also wants to pay that price?
Wow this series is seriously breath taking!! Briar continues to deal with her brutal complicated life trying to do whats right for her family but also for those that she is now getting close to. The storyline gets deeper and more twisted - at times its harrowing, brutal, heart-pounding, gut- wrenching and action packed, but also loving and caring!! This is one of the best PNRs I have read in a while and i really hope that its not too long before the next book comes out. MUST READ
I received an ARC copy of this book. I made it through book 2 way to quickly. It's so hard to put down. The plot thickens. Briar find she has friends she never thought she'd have. She finds trust where she never thought she'd find it. She struggles with her clarity and with her actions. But to what effect will her actions have??? You must read to find out. Will she finish what she came to Rouen to do. Or will she fail?? Will she lose herself while doing this....... Read to find out!!!!
Lots of action and so much more. Briar is still wanting to kill Dominic and deals with more grief. Lots of action and fantastic characters that keep the story flowing. Angel who is a vampire becomes another character that gets involved in Briars life. Secondary characters are also wonderful as Luke and her roommates give her their support. This is a solid five star read and is the second in the series that left me ready for another. Loved it!!
This is the second book in the Rouen Chronicles series and picks up where the first book ended. The action, suspense, drama, hint of romance and surprises keep you on your toes while keeping up with Briar's amazing story. The characters growth is perfect and showing each ones flaws allows the story to flow seamlessly. I can not wait to see what is in store for the next book in the series. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
