၁၉၇၆ - ရုပ်ရှင်ပဒေသာမဂ္ဂဇင်း၌ ၀တ္ထုတိုစတင်ဖော်ပြခံရပြီး စာပေနယ်သို့ ၀င်ရောက်ခဲ့သည်။ ကျောင်းတက် ရင်း စာအုပ်ထုတ်ဝေရေးလုပ်ငန်း လေ့လာလုပ်ကိုင်ခဲ့သည်။

Roughly translated to "a little bird", the novel by Sayar Min Lu, explores the life a young boy, whose parents have been in a state of conflict for as early as he can remember. Even from his earliest memories as a child, he seems to recall that while he acted as a mediator or intermediary between his parents, they never actually communicated to each other within his presence. This left him wondering as he grew up why on earth his parents have such a incomprehensible rift between them, and whether they actually have a hidden relationship kept secret from him. This was the primary narrative drive of our protagonist, Nyi Nyi, who adorably calls himself "Ko", which is an extraordinarily rare pronoun for a child to utilize so early in his life. Hilariously, I found this pronoun somewhat peevish at first, due to my lack of familiarity with it but after enduring about 30 pages of it, I even gained the urge to use this unique pronoun.
The supporting cast of characters and immersive environment were also fleshed out well enough to create this believable atmosphere that one that we might have experienced as a young Burmese student. What is unique to the narrative, is the mysterious and inexplicably complicated relationship that Nyi Nyi's parents seem to possess. Being a middle school child, he has not yet mastered the English language, which creates a metaphorical barrier between him and the truth he wishes to find out from the conversations between his mother and another supporting character Aunty Luu. Although throughout the tale Aunty Luu initiate numerous attempts to befriend our protagonist, she fails at almost every single one of them due to Nyi Nyi's high level of distrust towards her, based on his observations of her when she visits the house.
Out of all the supporting cast, my favorites has to be U Maung Maung Gyi and Mi Khine. U Maung Maung Gyi serves as a mentor-like, father figure to Nyi Nyi, whose childhood lacked that critical aspect. In fact his infamous pronoun was directly inspired from U Maung Maung Gyi. It is very apparent to the reader, how much influence this person has on our protagonist, his incentives and his constitution as a person. Mi Khine was Nyi Nyi's first crush, the first person he developed feelings of love for. Along with the homeroom teacher who has a soft spot for our protagonist and the friends that he obtained and maintained as he breeze through school, continued to act as a safe haven for Nyi Nyi where he could relax, enjoy himself and forget about the tempests he feel he has when he resides at home. Without them he feels lost and not living to his full potential as a child his age. This is excellently portrayed in the chapter when he goes bird hunting with local kids of his own age, creating parallels between what Nyi Nyi is and what he could become if he don't receive proper parental guidance and mix in with the wrong crowd.
I can't give enough praise to the author for adding depth and complexity to the father. Instead of being the run of the mill, cheater he ends up exuding an air of mystery whenever he's in the scene. Whether it be compassion and kindness or contempt and sadness, he was inscrutable. Although Sayar Min Lu hit the right spot with the father in terms of character development, I can't say the same for the mother who was left rather bland in comparison. It was beyond me why she couldn't have swallowed her pride and salvaged her marriage all for the sake of the family's collective happiness. I connected, sympathised and related more with the father. In the author's defense, the father has collectively more scenes with Nyi Nyi but I for one would like to argue that adding a few scenes for the mother would have added a lot more ambiguity, which I believe would have enhanced the experience. I learned in a later literary discussion about ငှက်ကလေး that the events of the book was a realistic portrait of the author's childhood. Perhaps the absence of the mother was the author depicting a proper, realistic portrayal of his past, a form of therapeutic treatment in which he cut off the pain the he felt at the time. I guess this will be one mystery that Sayar Min Luu took with him to his grave. A must read for people who are literate in Burmese.

ဝတ္ထုတိုအနေဖြင့်သာရေးရမည့်ဇတ်လမ်းမျိုးဟုထင်မိသည်။ အရေးအသားမှာလည်း ပင်မဇတ်ကောင် ကျောင်းသားလေး၏လေသံအတိုင်းမိအောင်တုပရေးသားထားသလားမပြောတတ် အတော်လေးရိုးစင်းပြီး၊ ဝါကျတိုတိုလေးများဖြင့် ပြတ်တောင်းပြတ်တောင်းရေးထား၏။ အချို့ဇတ်ကွက်များမှာ ဘာမှမဆိုင်ဘဲ (အချိတ်အဆက်မပါလာဘဲ) ထည့်သွင်းထားသလိုရှိသည်။ သို့သော် ဝါရင့်၊သဘာရင့်စာရေးဆရာမို့ထင်သည် ဇတ်လမ်းအသိမ်းကိုတော့ ကောင်းမွန်စွာဖြင့်သေသေသပ်သပ်အဆုံးသတ်ထားသည်ဟု မြင်မိသည်။
