Lucy Alvarez, a recent Spirit School graduate, is presented with a unique opportunity. She's asked to become one of Archangel Azrael's “Helpers,” a group of spirits who guide the recently deceased to the afterlife.
Lucy is definitely no stranger to death. She lost her mom when she was twelve. At age fifteen, she was diagnosed with cancer, a disease that ultimately claimed her life. She's an obvious choice to work with the Angel of Death.
To become a Helper, Lucy undergoes training with Archangel Azrael himself. The Angel of Death is a handsome enigma, cold yet compassionate, and difficult to befriend.
School For Spirits: Angel of Death is the fourth book in the Spirit School series.
I'm a rather reclusive author living in Ohio with four cats. I write super fluffy fluff and darkest grim grimdark. "This author has a strange imagination" was my favorite compliment ever. I hope my strange imagination entertains someone out there!
Who would have thought that the angel of death had a soft side, and that the front he put on was just a façade for his insecurities and lack of self confidence? It was only when he met his new helper Luciana, a young women who had died before her time through cancer, but who in the afterlife was buoyant and joyous that he discovered a new side to himself. I love the romance in these stories between the newly dead women and the archangels. I especially loved the guidance Azrael and Lucy gave to their dying humans. The stories of death are very touching especially the ones about the babies and I feel that all mothers who have lost a child should read this very touching book as it is one which fills us with hope for a beautiful re-union in the afterlife. The idea that the baby could in turn act as a spirit guide for his/her parents is awesome. This series is in fact one which gives us all hope and removes the scare of death and dying. Thank you Ms. Lewes for writing such a profound series, I look forward to reading the rest of the books as I find myself totally hooked now.
I always read the author's note before diving into a book. And this time, it made me cry. “The death of any loved parent is an incalculable lasting blow. Because no one ever loves you again like that.”
My review
Oh god, the work of the helpers was really intense. Poor Lucy. Azrael stopped their interactions just as they were about to come together. I was frustrated, you see. I wondered why Azrael was ignoring Lucy. I won't lie; I just about gave up on them. The build-up to that moment was so surreal that I almost broke down again.
I have no complaints about the missions they had to complete. Though the missions were different from the previous books, they were equally well written. However, I wanted to see more chemistry between the characters.
All in all, I feel the author could have made better use of certain plots to give the characters more depth.
I am loving this series - each book is engrossing and keeps me reading long after I should stop. I just keep getting so invested that I don't want to wait to find out what will happen. In this book, I was quickly and completely drawn in by the endearing characters - both Azrael and Lucy have such compassion that I immediately loved them! I also really appreciate how each book continues to build and develop this world - I love seeing characters from past books, and I love how at least one of the main characters in each book had been introduced previously.
Okay I just love this series and this one was one of the most touching of the books so far. This one had quite a few sad stories because the main character Lucy is a helper in training for the Angel of Death Azrael who is there when one dies. That being said though there were a lot of sad stories their love story was very special and we did get a few glimpses of characters from the other stories so we find out what they are up to. It was such a wonderfully well written story and I couldn't put the book down.
It can be hard for an author to sink the mind into a world they create and keep that focus. this author has done just fine. All four of the books in this series have in spots caused tears. While maintaining that overall feel-good sense. My thanks to the author.
I've just finished the last book in the School For Spirits series. I'm going to miss Aron's characters and their adventures. I don't know what Heaven will be like, but I love this interpretation.
