“We wait, we hide, and watch Earth burn across the stars…” – From the lost pages of the ARK Diary
She’s one of the last free humans. On the run… And running out of time.
Laina Roberts has been on the run for ten years, a freeborn human hiding from the cyborgs of the Silver Legion who now controls what’s left of humanity. Moving secretly from planet to planet and space station to space station makes for a damn lonely life—and don’t even get her started on how long it’s been since she last had sex. Sometimes she thinks it might be worth turning herself in to the cyborgs just to end the loneliness. That is, until she’s caught!
Captured by a hot-as-hell Legion officer, the cyborg Ronan makes her think being probed by him might not be so bad. But becoming a cyborg’s slave—sex or otherwise—isn’t high on her to-do list. She doesn’t trust him and doesn’t understand his constant questions about Earth—especially those about her long-dead relatives. Ronan can just kiss her ass—oh yes, please—because she is not going to let her desires or his incredibly perfect body weaken her resolve. She now has a new mission, to convince the cyborgs and the rest of the galaxy that all Terrans, humans and synthetic humans like cyborgs, have the right to be free.
If only he didn’t make her feel like melting into his arms and never leaving. Being captured by a cyborg might not be so bad after all…

The heroine:Laina Roberts - her family are the keepers of the sacred Ark. It is a chronicle of the past, of humanity and so much more. More than thirteen generations ago, humans created synthetics and cyborgs and treated them as slaves, until their creations rose up. Humans are now exiled and hunted, they took to the stars to hide, but it won’t be long till all are found. The synthetics and cyborgs know of the existence of the Ark and are looking for it. It is the last hope of humanity, yet it can’t fall into their hands. Laina is fighting to stay alive and currently is the only Terran working on a clunker of a ship headed out to the edge of the protectorate to an unknown world she is hoping will accept a castaway like her.
The Hero:Ronan Antares - he is a cyborg and Sub-Commander of the TCF Orion. Which means he is part of the Galactic Protectorate. The TCF Orion is a Silver Legion heavy cruiser, and it is sleek and efficient with devastating agility. Ronan hates freeborn humans and he adhere’s strictly to the dictates of the Silver Legion.
The Story: When Ronan’s ship comes across the ship that Laina is on, He and some of his officers board the ship looking for illegal activities or crew members without proper papers. They find Laina who is a freeborn human and so under the Galactic Protectorate law, is a slave to the synths and cyborgs. They take her captive.
The story is good, it is intricate and very interesting. In that Raina’s descendant was one of the group of scientists that created the synths and cyborgs. The commander of Ronan’s ship is named Alaric and he has been studying an old incomplete Arc that he found which details some of the things that happened before Earth was destroyed, including the creation of their species. He is looking for a way to save them. As it is now, though cyborgs can live for hundreds of years, they can’t reproduce, since they were born as adolescents from birthing chambers that were destroyed along with Earth. Alaric thinks the Roberts bloodline have the missing information that is key to the survival of the cyborgs.
The story gets even more interesting after adding in the fact that there are cyborgs and synths on board the ship that hate freeborn humans and will do almost anything to get back at them for their treatment even though it was hundreds of years ago and the humans that mistreated them are long dead. They just want to punish any freeborn humans. So, there is an ever-present danger to Laina on the ship and off.
The romance starts slow since it is an enemies-to-lovers trope. Ronan is attracted to Laina from the start, but he can’t figure out why since he has always had a great deal of anger that he has held toward freeborn humans, not only because of his beginnings on earth, but he has been through some other things more recently which he may blame on the freeborns even if illogically. Laina, on the other hand, was born in space and has been on the run from cyborgs for her entire life, they also may have caused the death of her parents when she was young. She didn’t know much about them but was always afraid of them. She comes to see that they aren’t all that much different before he does.
I have to say that I sometimes have a pet peeve about the names of Romantic Heroes and heroines. I hate boring or really old-fashioned names, but I do love the name Ronan (can anyone say Ronan Dex from Stargate Atlantis?) I swear I have binged that show like 3 times because of how how Jason Momoa looks as Ronan Dex.
After cyborgs took over, the status of humans in the universe crashed and burned But the situation is not exactly what it seems. There are prejudices and mis-information galore. Cyborgs, by design of their creators—the humans from generations ago—cannot reproduce. But when Laina Roberts, a free human, is captured while in hiding, and analysed, a new hope sizzles on the horizon.
Review
Engaging plot with great investment in world building as well as creating interesting characters. The romance is great too. Ronan, our resident cyborg, is protective and caring. And hell of a devil in bed!
I got lost in Laina and Ronan’s story, set in a futuristic world where humans are very small in a universe inhabited by countless civilizations and citizens. The whys and hows made for riveting reading as they found themselves on two very different sides. Anger and vengeance vs a simple need to survive meant they were odds from the start. Fortunately, desire and attraction didn’t care about the details, it simply meant the friction between them added delicious complications.
No matter the year on the calendar, and the history they both clung to, it was the here and now, their future, they ended up fighting for. And fight they did. These characters were strong and resilient, unbending until they had a very good reason to let go. There are some huge topics tackled here but for me the emotions and relationships took center stage.
This was the first in the series and there was a lot of world and character setup. The stage has been well set even if it meant a slow start to Laina and Ronan’s story. Saying that, I couldn’t be more excited that this journey is just beginning and can’t wait for more!
I was NOT expecting this type of story. Actually I'm not even sure what I was expecting. Although I love PNR's, this may be the first "alien" one I've read. Admittedly, this took a little getting used to (maybe a couple chapters), but once I understood the characters a little more, I was 100% in.
Alaina is a freeborn. Basically a human (non-robotic) who lives among the others. But here's the catch. Her race is considered less-than, including being used as slaves and hunted for such a thing. It appears that she may be one of the last free freeborn, so Alaina is on the run, posing as any race she could pass for, just to survive. But she's been caught. What now?
Ronan is an officer of the Silver Legion. A group that was established to keep the order, or as most are convinced, to control all of humanity. When he notices a freeborn illegally on a ship, he doesn't hesitate to capture her. But once captured, it appears that she may be more important that originally suspected. In fact, she starts to become more important to him. And now that the laws have been written, can he truly keep her safe?
Lots of characters and alien races to get used to. But once I got a handle on them, I was able to get in to the story more easily. The underlining message of equality was very well done. The chemistry between Ronan and Alaina was not only sweet, but steamy. I really enjoyed reading about Earth and it's importance through someone elses eyes for the first time. I fell in love with our planet all over again.
Although this story contained "main" characters, I fell for many different characters within this read. I'm hoping that since this is the first in the series, I'll meet them again.

A totally different genre for me to read but I love all of the author’s other books so gave this a try. It took me a little while to ‘get into’ the book as I'd to get my head round the different characters & races, however the more I read the more I became engrossed in Laina & her fight for survival & freedom. The romance between her & Ronan was touching but it was only one aspect of the book. I liked Ronan but loved Laina who was such a strong character with a very forgiving heart & I loved how attitudes towards her changed throughout the book. I felt that this was very much the first in a series as the door was left open for a number of secondary characters to have their story & I certainly hope there's more to come My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
Loved it! Across the Stars is a great scifi story that takes place in a future where Earth has been practically destroyed and the majority survivors are cyborgs. Oh, there are humans out there, but the political environment that existed when the Earth survivors joined the rest of the galaxy made humans personae non gratae and, in effect, the slaves of the cyborgs. They are hunted all over the galaxy.
In fact, Terrans in general (which are mostly comprised of cyborgs and synths) are second class species, not considered sapient because they are not able to naturally procreate. However, they are admired for the mercenary and/or peacekeeping services they provide to many of the other races. This galaxy, in which Earthlings are no big deal, is going to be a fun place to set this series.
As the creators of the cyborgs, humans are critical to the survival of all Terrans, even if not everyone realizes that. There is going to be a bit of a public relations issue when they discover that Laina is the most critical part of the survival puzzle. When the cyborgs figure this out, Laina goes from being a prisoner/slave to precious cargo. And the Cyborgs are not the only ones that want her. Just to make things more interesting…
Despite being constantly hunted Laina, does give the cyborgs the benefit of the doubt. However, some cyborgs hold grudges, even though the events that caused the destruction of their beloved Earth (that they blame on humans) happened centuries ago. I think all humans should hate cyborgs just as much, but that would make Laina less of a heroine.
The romance between Laina and Ronan is a little bit of instant attraction and a little getting to know each other’s differences. The romance intertwines nicely with the rest of the story and just as much as I want to see Laina get justice, I also want to see Laina and Ronan get together.
This is a nice move into SciFi for Ms. Smith. Along with Mr. Chinn, the authors have created strong scifi concepts and an interesting vision of the future. My only complaint was that the space battle scene was sketchy. There was an awkward segue from just after the beginning of the battle to the end when the good guys won. If this series is to continue, the authors may need to work on their space battle scenes, as there could very well be more in the future of this series.
I would not normally look too closely at a book with naked man chest. But Lauren Smith’s name was also on the cover, and she can tell a story. Her books (the ones I’ve read) are mostly romance with a strong secondary non-romance plot to support the romance. I usually like it the other way around. But I admire Ms. Smith’s ability to grab my attention. And this is SciFi. So I had to read it. Good idea!
Enjoyable interplay between the characters, whatever their race/station. Nice world building and speculation on the future of humanity. Looking forward to the next in the series.
Across the Stars by Lauren Smith & Noah Chinn is the 1st book in their Cyborg Genisis series. I wasn’t sure what to expect in this sci-fi storyline, as I have recently read a few Sci/Fantasy books, and I am happy to say I really enjoyed Across the Stars.
Laina Roberts, our heroine, is possibly the last human (freeborn), since the destruction of earth hundreds of years ago. Laina has been in hiding for 10 years, constantly changing planets, working on space stations masquerading as another race. If she is caught, she will be sent away to live as a slave. But Laina’s luck is about to end, as the space station she is working on, is being searched for a freeborn, and the Silver Legion (cyborgs) are the best at what they do.
Ronan, the cyborg lead officer, captures Laina and forces her aboard the Silver Legion. Though he is a cyborg, Ronan is one hot hunk, and despite his arrogance, Laina finds herself deeply attracted to him; he is the enemy and she cannot control her lustful feelings. Ronan also finds himself unusually attracted to Laina, but tries to fight off those feelings. Many of the men on the Silver Legion, resent the freeborn, and this will cause problems aboard the ship, causing danger for Laina. But it will be Ronan who will come her rescue, as well as the doctor Val, who also recognizes something different in Laina.
What follows is a complex and interesting world building that will revolve around various different races, with the cyborgs protecting all. Once the doctor realizes that Laina is very important to them, those aboard the Silver Legion begin to change their feelings of freeborn, as they want the chance to live more normal lives. Though some of the men hate freeborns, and once again Laina finds herself in danger.
Laina was a great heroine; smart, strong, savvy and independent. I loved her and Ronan together, especially when they succumbed to their lustful feelings, which cemented their relationship and working together. I also enjoyed Laina new found friendship with Val (the doctor who realizes how important she is) and Alanna (top female officer) , who I do look forward to in future books if they get their own story. The other secondary characters were very well done.
Without telling too much more, as I do not want to spoil things, the story line moving forward will center on bringing the races together to bring equality, as well as use Laina’s ability and her access to the ark to help find a way to bring them all together similar to earth. The important factor when starting this book is there are a lot of details such as the various races, planets & environments are explored, and we meet many new characters; in Sci-Fi or Fantasy that is always the norm. So if it feels a bit slow early on, you need to stay with it, as it becomes a fascinating ride.
Across the Stars was a great read, wonderful characters, excellent story line and so much more to come in future books. We need to know more about the ark, and what Ronan , Laina and their group will do to bring back unity. Lauren Smith and Noah Chinn have created a wonderful new series, which I look forward to reading more about.
I wasn't sure about this one when I started it. As a rule, I don't tend to read sci-fi (that's not to say that I don't enjoy it, my experience is limited to TV and film for the most part). There was a lot of world building in the early chapters and while it was interesting, I wasn't sure how the rest of the story was going to flow. Fortunately, once I'd got into the book, the story grabbed my attention and pulled me along for the ride. As with any story set in a different time or world, there's a lot to take in, but the character of Laina helped to make it seem real. As she got to know the cyborg characters and we saw them through her eyes, they became more 'human'. I particularly liked the female crew members, Val and Alanna. I suspect that they might have their own stories to tell later? There's certainly plenty of scope for future stories here and I'll be interested to read them. In many ways, the romance almost came in secondary to the rest of the storyline. There was so much going on that you could almost be forgiven for forgetting from time to time that it was a romance story. That's not to say that the romantic side didn't work or wasn't good. It did. Ronan was very much like an ancient warrior, albeit a futuristic one. I did guess what their connection might result in, but I certainly wasn't disappointed when I was right. There are elements of this that reminded me of paranormal/supernatural romances. It did surprise me slightly, although thinking about it I'm not sure why. Perhaps the science in Sci-fi is what creates the 'magic.' I did get a little confused by the time scales in this, both how long ago things had happened (there was a lot of history of the universe to get your head around and what happened hundreds of years or thousands got a little bit mixed up in my mind) and the length of time between events in the book. I think that was mostly because there was so much to take in. Overall this was a good read and I would be certainly really keen to read more in this series and see how everything plays out.
What a superb start to a new Sci Fi Romance series! I haven't read either of these authors previous works but I'll defo be adding to my TBR list!
Laina is the last remaining free born Terran - the rest of her family was lost when their small craft was blown up. Now in the hands of the Cyborgs, who are kinda the Space Police/Navy, she has come to the attention of Ronan and he just doesn't know what t do with her.
Well, she does intrigue him but does he really want a Terran? Ronan is over 300 years old and has dedicated most of his life to the Legion. But this tiny Terran may hold the secret to freeing the Cyborgs and Synths from their non-pro-creating programming!
There are some really awful plans regarding Laina were the crew of the craft are concerned. I really think most f them got off very lightly!! I would not be that understanding. A certain Alien prince is very eye catching and I do hope we get to see more of him in future books. The Ark was very original and I loved finding out everything it contained. Gimme More!
This book is absolutely fantastic!! Laina is so strong, all of her family and friends were blown up on a space craft for freeborn humans. She manages to escape in a pod that her parents put her in just before the ship exploded. She is a teenager just trying to survive and not get captured by the Leigon. Now all grown up she is still on the run from planet to planet and ship to ship to stay ahead of the Legion and slavery. Her luck runs out and she is captured by Ronan and the Legion.
Ronan is second in command of the Legion space craft. He is a Cyborg hunting is he freeborn humans because he hates the humans because they enslaved his people. But now the tables have turned and he is rounding up all of the freeborn humans and putting them into slavery. Once he captures her a string of events happen to have him softening towards her. Ronan actually gets to know Laina and she worms her way under his skin especially now that he has found out she is the key to his peoples survival. He has come to realize that all humans aren’t as bad as he thought, but they really are the key to his species survival.
I love this enemies to lovers romance and don’t get me started on the secondary characters. They added so much to the story I can’t wait to see who gets their own book. I highly recommend this book to all of the sci-fi lovers out there!
Cool plot, but the characters did nothing for me. I either hated them or just felt indifferent towards them. The cyborgs were pompous jerkwads. Well, the men were at least. And Laina could be smart at times, but at other times she could be incredibly stupid.
And the romance was too unbelievable, even for someone who can usually overlook insta-love. Something about it here just made me roll my eyes. Ronan went from treating Laina like dirt to basically declaring his undying love in no time, with barely any build up in between.
It's a shame, because there were a TON of things left unresolved and I have many unanswered questions, but I don't know if I'll be continuing the series. (If the series is even being continued.) I might consider it, since like I said before, the plot was pretty good. It was a little confusing at times but interesting. I just didn't feel any attachment to the characters, so my overall enjoyment was less than it could've been.
Also, totally unrelated to the book itself, but Ronan's supposed to be blond. It's a pet peeve of mine when the cover model doesn't match the character description. Surely they could've found a blond model to slap in front of a space background.
❤️❤️❤️❤️ 💋💋 This was so different for me . It’s was also very good , I really enjoyed reading it . The characters and their different races were wonderful. The amount of effort it must take to develop those is staggering, and to imagine the universe with no Earth is heartbreaking. When Laina and Ronan sit talking of how the earth once was and what he remembered, it brought me to tears .This is the part I found so real , it’s possible for us to destroy all that we love, and then what ? The story of the ark I found fascinating , what imagination these two authors have , their dreams must be so awesome, I’d love to live in their heads for just a little while. The whole book is very good ,not my usual I’ll admit , ( my first sci-fi ), but I did enjoy it and would carry on reading this series, I’m very intrigued with the Ark and the other characters Alana, Erik , Julian and Hawk . I’d love to read their books . Overall I’d say it was a hit for me and I’d recommend it to other readers gladly. I received an advance copy of this book and chose to submit a review
I am always willing to give something a try even if it may not automatically scream romance. Across The Stars was definitely something I normally wouldn’t have picked up but the premise caught my interest. If you like Sci-fi with a touch of added romance then I think you will like this one overall. For me, I think it dragged on just a little bit more than I would have liked but I think that was due to it having first book in a series problems. There is a lot of information as well as characters being introduced and while it is important to get this information, if it is not well balanced, then well it can take away from the main story. There were some things that were left unresolved, and maybe that will be addressed in future books but I wanted to know the answers just to help make sense of what was going on. While I was not blown away by this book, I am glad I gave it a chance, never be afraid to read something new.
Laina is the last freeborn human, essentially a floating refugee, always on the run from those hunting her for enslavement. I thought she was a mousy thing, but first impressions can be misleading, and she surprised the heck out of me as time went on. Honestly, I am very happy with the way things worked out!
Ronan is mostly human with a few extras to make him almost invincible, making him a cyborg, basically. He and his crew mates currently work on an exploratory ship, but have been military trained and seen battles. They still help police the universe, while lending aid when needing or taking those like Laina in to custody. I’ll admit, I didn’t like him at first. However, like Laina, he surprised me, notably with the layers of emotion lurking beneath his old school behavior. I finally came around to him, it he had to work to find my good favor.
Ronan and Laina’s romance took a back seat to the landscape of the story, but I think it worked out for the better. Being immersed in the politics and divides of the races went a good ways in laying groundwork, which in turn transferred over to explaining perceptions between Laina and Ronan. And when the romance had center stage, it was all sorts of of wonderful attraction, sometimes humorous fumbling, and sizzling bedroom action.
Futuristic/sci-fi, with a secondary thread of romance, Across The Stars was great reading! Noah and Lauren did a wonderful job setting the stage of a captivating world and the secrets lurking within. I found the various races interesting and am hoping to see quite a few secondary characters get their own story. There’s so many potential ideas waiting to be tapped and I hope there’s more to come from this duo.
I received an ARC of this book and was impressed by the plot and characters. How to make cyborgs seem human when they have proven themselves to be contemptuous of humans? Somehow, they did it. There’s a lot of action and adventure in this story, as well as romance, and the connection between Ronan and Laina is portrayed in a way that leads the reader to wonder if their meeting was somehow pre-ordained. I enjoyed the exploration of man’s attempt to be God, much like in Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein, a recurring theme of hubris leading to castigation of some sort. It didn’t go much better for humans in this book, although here the result was much more catastrophic and far-reaching. It is certainly an interesting representation of how things could go were scientists given full reign to create life and such life were treated as insignificant or inferior. I enjoyed the book and would love to read subsequent books in this series.
Sexy outer space romance, enemies-to-lovers, suspense, some humor, and terrific world-building.
Laina is a freeborn. As a member of race relegated to slavery by the universe's governing body, she has been on the run since she was orphaned as a teen. Ronan, a cyborg, is part of a quasi-military force that rounds up freeborns and returns them to servitude.
I'm not usually a sci-fi fan, but this story hooked me early and kept me riveted. Part of the fun was deciding whether the political undertones were intentional or not. Well-paced and well-plotted, Across the Stars revealed its twists and secrets at just the right points to keep me turning the pages, eager to know what comes next. The main characters were layered and flawed, compelling and relatable, and while they got their HFN at the end, I still want to know more. I'm already looking forward to additional books in the series.
Absolutely addictive. This book reeled me and I willing went.
The constant highs and lows of this book would normally annoy me but it is written so well that’s it’s like watching a good drama. Every time you think things could be getting better an unknown enemy throws a spanner in the world. A species final hope, Laina doesn’t know the importance of her own existence. Runaway, saviour, prisoner and visionary. The slow transformation of hate to love, cultural differences can be bridged by the right moral code.
Very much enjoyed this story and look forward to finding out who this shadow council is and will the Terrans finally unite u set one name?
I absolutely LOVE this story and can't wait to see something more written about this universe. I have read quite a lot of Lauren's historical romances. I didn't know she had written anything science fiction or paranormal until I was looking for something else she might have written. I love Lauren's series books as they allow you to learn about a world and the people in it along with their interactions. I hope she continues to write and create a series with this universe.
Please please write more books like this. And thank you for allowing me to see into the worlds and people you create in your mind and write into books I can read.
I absolutely loved this read. It action packed, intriguing and fast paced. The characters were awesome you definitely didn’t know who the bad guys were till they struck, you also get a teaser at the end that tells you that there is still some traitors out there. Although the author hinted at a possible second book, this book was written 2 years ago and I have not seen another from this series I hope she continues it was a different cyborg read them most but it sucked me in. A definite must read.
I was a little surprised by this book. I hadn't read anything by these authors and once I started reading it was hard to put down. I must admit that this book has a very interesting aspect to the future and to any Alien that might be in it. I highly recommend this book and authors to those who are into this genre. You will find that you get a completely perspective on the incredible future.
Laina is freeborn(human) and on the run, moving planet to planet. She is captured by Ronan of the Legion. Laina may be more important than either of them realize. The heat between them is explosive and totally unexpected for them both. This was an interesting look into the rules and characters of this world.
I've read several of Lauren's books - historical and contemporary. Her leap into scifi was amazing. I love the journey all of the characters made from enemies to friend, and in the case of the main ones, lovers. Action packed with a mystery at its core made this an impossible to put down story. Can't wait to see if there's a follow up book!!!
Published in 2019 this is clearly a first installment what is planned to be a series. By the time I found and read (Fall 2023) no additional installments to follow.
I enjoyed. Do recommend. The only con. … you’ll need to deploy your own imagination to find closure for the characters you will come to care for and a conclusion to the story you have become invested in.
Oh my goodness, please tell me there are more books in this series. The tale of Ronan and Laina is not one you will soon forget. I absolutely could not stop reading this book. The construction and throughout storyline was simply fantastic. I definitely recommend this book.
This book was amazing! Laina is one of the last free born humans living in exile. She is constantly on the move. She lost her family to the cyborgs chasing her. She is on a ship trying to survive on her own. Ronan is a cyborg who is hunting free born humans to place them into slavery. He hates humans because of a long ago human versus cyborg battle. He catches her and gets to know her. He begins to question himself. Are humans really innocent and should he change the way he thinks? The world building was stellar. The secondary characters make me want to keep reading. The romance and sexual chemistry was so hot. I really enjoyed this book. I am a huge sci-fi reader and this was REALLY Well done. I truly have found a new sci fi author. I have never read any of this authors books. I was in awe of the details, twist, and turns this book portrayed. WOW just WOW. I sure hope this series continues. I am eagerly awaiting the sequel.I received an Advance Reader Copy and chose to leave a review.
Wow, just wow. The character development and world building was great. Only a few minor editing errors. I won't give spoilers. True part of this book was easy to guess, but that didn't retract from the story. This book us a must read. You will not regret it.
