It’s not an adventure ‘til something goes wrong. That’s what the Traveler’s Code says.
Hoops is a normal kid with a boring life, but he craves adventure and the chance to be a hero. On the way home from school, a strange red-headed teenager gives him a mysterious gift; an old timepiece. When Hoops accidentally unlocks the magic of the timepiece, he’s whisked away and forced to travel through twelve different worlds. If he can survive the adventure, he’ll be inducted into The Traveler’s League, an ancient order of brave children who have all made their own journey with the timepiece.
Little does Hoops know that an evil wizard, trapped in one of the worlds, will stop at nothing to steal the timepiece and escape to the other worlds, where his power can be unleashed and he can carry out his revenge against the Traveler’s League.
Can Hoops evade the wizard’s snares and become a member of the Traveler’s League?
The Timepiece is Book 1 in The Traveler’s League Series. Take your child through a fantastical journey full of loveable characters, strange creatures, tense moments, and hard decisions.
If you love middle grade fantasy, you will not be disappointed by The Timepiece! A true mg fantasy, it is a fun, easy read fit for ages 8-12,, but its unique storyline and thrilling twists hooked even this almost 40 year old woman! If your kids (or you!) are fans of Spiderwick, Harry Potter, BFG, or things of the like, they are sure to enjoy this magically humorous tale.
On Hoops way home from school one day a strange kid gives him a old pocket type watch and a note and tells him he can't open either until he gets home. Once home the note is some weird message and the watch won't set to the correct time but once he tries a time in the note he finds himself in a strange world and now he must figure out how to get home before he is killed. But he is also intrigued by the watch and decides to keep exploring, but what does this all mean?
This is a fascinating book that will have you on the edge of your seat rooting for Hoop and also, despite all the action, trying to figure out what this all means for Hoop as well. Even though most of the characters in this book are boys trust me girls will like this book as well especially once they get to the end. Even though this is a middle grade book people of all ages will be drawn to this wonderful story-line, even those reluctant readers out there will enjoy this awesome book. If you are lucky enough to get the audio version narrated by Kevin Rineer you are in for quite a treat as he, with his wonderful voice, transforms you and your world to that of Hoops and you seem to be right there with Hoop helping him at every turn. Which ever version you pick I think you will enjoy the book and I can't wait till I can get more.
A great chapter book adventure for early readers!! I think this would be great for elementary students to listen to or those who are strong readers to tackle on their own. My 3rd grader is going to love it! Adventure, suspense, magic, alternate dimensions, intriguing creatures, and a mission to do the right thing make this a wonderfully captivating read for all ages. Even I’m excited to see what happens next!
Three of my kids recently read and liked this, so I thought I'd check it out also. I'm rating this 5/5 stars on their behalf.
It's a fun story. It does seem to get a little random at times with various creatures and mini-missions, but that also keeps the reader guessing. I would have thought that certain storylines would have been wrapped up better, but I'm assuming that the author left these intentionally open and will come back to these elements in future books of the series.
SPOILERS BELOW!!!
It could be that I was just over analyzing it, but I felt that there were several inconsistencies. Does time pass in the real world while the travellers are in other worlds, or not? It seems to go back and forth. How did the previous travellers all come together at the end, if none of them had the timepiece anymore? And how can all of the other travellers be kids, when it took Hoops all summer to complete his missions? It seems like at least some of them should be young adults, unless they're kicked out at some point or something. Once again, I hope that these things are explained in subsequent books.
Like I said, it's a fun story. Just don't overthink it.

This book was great! I would recommend it to anyone 9 - 99 completely family friendly. Hoops is chosen as the next time traveler. Where he gets to travel through time to different worlds in order to become part of the travelers league! Every world is different and incredibly well portrayed, Hoops had many adventures, while looking out for evil Braxo… I really like how the author actually gave the mom a personality, not a lot of authors do that. They just have the mom show up randomly and not have any effect on the character at all! Not true for this book. In this book the mom was nice, sarcastic and willing to give punishments! And Hoops seemed to actually care about her, he didn’t think about her with disdain. I also really liked Hoops, he had a wonderful personality. He had a great sense of humor, he was brave, funny, a little reckless at times, but he also used his head! Anyway, good book. Everyone should read it!!! I can’t wait to read book 2!!!
This book provides an overview of the Traveler's league series . . . it's a hard balance to provide background details and yet move a story along. The story begins to move along as you progress through the title. In the end, you want to read more. The book highlights the need to follow conscience and the task given, rather than "rules."
From a Teacher's perspective overall the book is well written and much more wholesome reading for upper Primary/Middle school readers.
I really liked this book of traveling through time to different levels. Hoops Worthington is the next chosen Time Traveler. He is given the timepiece and goes through the 12 stages on the piece. There are some good people as well as bad things he meets on his travels all to become a member of the Time Travelers League.
