Andy was born in 1967, and grew up with a love of science fiction inspired by the TV shows of the late 70s. Having always had a creative eye, he graduated with a BA Honours in Graphic Design, and has gone on to have a successful career as a Creative Director within a number of digital agencies, creating award-winning work for some of the largest global brands. During this time he nurtured his passion for writing sci-fi and secured a commission with the BBC for his first script, The Department of Unknown Origins, a Victorian X-Files set in the Natural History Museum, exec produced by Jon Plowman and considered by BBC Drama and Sky One.
The Anachronist is his first novel, one of a three part series called 'The Infinity Engines.' You can find out more about it on his blog: www.infinityengines.com
He lives in Surrey with his wife, two teenage daughters and a troublesome puppy.
This is an ambitious, far-reaching saga taking in all of time (as measured by humanity) as well as glimpses of the chaos outside of time. There's all sorts of technology (or at least pseudo-science) involved, as well as critters in the chaos who feast on dark energy and assorted beings from myth and fantasy, who may be partially controlled by Solomon's legendary ring.
Characters who die don't seem to stay dead, and some are from a different time continuum than the main one of the story. The main villain starts as human but becomes even more of a monster than he was.
While I enjoyed the wild adventures, even when I wasn't sure what was going on, I eventually became overwhelmed by the enormity of it all, and probably won't read the rest of the series. But that's just me, and I think no fault of the author, who has an amazingly inventive imagination.
I reviewed Book 1 separately, as it was a free download from Amazon, and I'm so glad for that. I probably wouldn't have delved into this series without it. As I write this review, I'm at the beginning of Book 4, and I'm thoroughly hooked and a bit gutted that I'm closer to the end of the series than the start.
This series is just so clever. I don't ever question the reality of the universe Andrew Hastie has created, and there are some nifty little narrative devices that aren't obvious until they play out in full. I'm honestly in awe of the author's imagination - I just watched a couple of video clips on Amazon where he explains where the idea stemmed from, but it doesn't do justice to the complexity of these stories.
This book series is captivating I couldn't put it down three books of satisfying adventure that kept me entertained for many happy hours I highly recommend this book series
