Adam Harris’s name has just appeared on a top secret list of extraterrestrial origin. Unbeknownst to him, he’s one of a handful of individuals capable of implementing a Save Point, a static moment in time he’s able to revisit over and over upon death.

It’s a good thing, too. Brain cancer was turning into a real drag…

The government owns the list though, and they’ve wasted no time snapping him up. According to them, he has thirteen days in an alien realm to learn as much as he can before the inevitable, at which point his memories, Skill Progressions and Weapon Proficiencies will endure despite his body resetting.

Then it’s rinse and repeat.

But there are unwritten rules to the game he’s about to play, and unseen forces acting in judgment. Adam will have to learn the hard way that dying is the easiest thing he’s going to do today.

I... am fairly disappointed actually.

An intriguing start and not a bad writing style, but sadly, the main character is retarded. Not actually, he just makes extremely stupid choices, brags for no reason, happens to get stuff right by accident and the help of others and has no redeeming features in my eyes as a reader other than being the focus of the story. Despite that, I was ready to give it two or three stars until the last 10-15%, when the book just decided to go fully idiotic with the main hero managing to defeat the strongest opposition possible, that could/should be able to smite him with a wave of hand/tentacle. It was just....so bad, and I so regret not quitting the book at around 30%, when I first started to notice stuff that irritated me more than just a little.

Awesome story

This was a very well put together story. It's been sitting in my TBR folder for a while, mostly because of the cover.

It does a great job of setting the world, the characters and the conflict in a way that is fresh and new.

Really looking forward to the next one.

I was able to finish this book largely because of the decent amount of action in it and because I forced myself. The biggest problem this book has is the MC, who goes from being stupid to being unnecessarily insulting, repeat, ad infinitum.

So humans were contacted by aliens and forced into participating in "the game". The game itself picks the participants and it picks Adam Harris, a gamer who recently found out he has terminal cancer and so has given up on life refusing all further treatments. The military shows up at the MC’s door and the MC just ignores them because he has cancer and the MC is too busy feeling sorry for himself, thereby establishing early on that the MC is a pathetic quitter and not a leader. And yet when the MC gets to the aliens’ gaming world he quickly becomes the leader of the human faction in spite of the fact that everyone else has been there for months and so has tons of more relevant information and experience than the MC. This also happens in spite of the MC being incredibly stupid repeatedly, including insulting the aliens running the game unnecessarily, but then the MC insults everyone unnecessarily. Sounds like someone I’d trust to lead with the future of humanity on the line, right?

The unlikable MC is the worst part of this book but not far behind is the tired old trope that makes up the entire story. The loser gamer who finds himself in the perfect situation to capitalize on all that gaming experience. Except the MC’s gaming experience didn’t actually teach him anything useful apparently since he doesn’t take advantage of the “tutorial” to learn anything about the game before marching in and getting himself killed simply because the MC couldn’t be bothered to watch where he was walking. But hey, the MC respawns, where upon he marches off without taking advantage of the tutorial and ends up starting a vendetta that puts all humans in the game in danger.

Apparently gaming didn’t teach the MC the value of allies either since he pretty much starts every conversation by being as insulting as possible unless the MC is scared which results in about a minute’s worth of toadying before the MC starts being insulting again. If the MC is talking to an attractive human female he’ll wait until a second meeting to be insulting. At the first meeting the MC will stammer and stare at them and then ask the first available male if she’s single, and, no, the MC isn’t 13.

A bunch more stupid stuff happens, like the MC agreeing to a duel without understanding any of the rules (if only there had been a tutorial or an actual intelligent leader among the humans to shut the MC up) but I want to skip ahead to the first session out of game where the MC doesn’t discuss anything important at all LIKE THE OUTCOME OF THE DUEL HE WAS JUST IN, THE CONSEQUENCES OF WHICH COULD LEAD TO THE ENSLAVEMENT OF ALL HUMANITY. No, first the MC is an ass to everyone trying to help him even though he should have some idea of what’s going on by now. Then, at the players’ meeting, is the fact that the MC got a tutorial when no one else did discussed? No. Do they discuss the second group of humans hiding out in the game? No. Do they discuss the all-important leveling up, something the MC hasn’t been able to figure out on his own? No. They basically do a meet and greet and then the MC is apparently drugged into unconsciousness due to his injuries because the next thing that happens is the MC reappearing in the game.

The ending is just pathetic and deserves spoiling but feel free to skip to the end if you wish to avoid spoilers. Basically another group of aliens interferes (lets call 'em the "Toots" since I can't be bothered to care what the author actually called them). The Toots, for no real reasons, attempt to aid the MC resulting in the Toots ACCIDENTALLY (because nothing intelligent actually happens in this book) arranging a show down between the current game champions and half the human team. So 13 on 6 where anyone of the 13 can kill all of the humans. But the Toots were attempting to give the humans a device that would allow them to win. The device allows the MC to travel back to where the book started but retaining all his memories. The end.

Bottom line: a complete waste of time.

A fun surprise

It started out slow and mostly made me pity and dislike the mc. But he grew on me and the situation he was in I can somewhat understand his actions.
He “grows” as a mc and into someone I could root for. There was a lot of exploring in the dark trying to understand what the new situation he found himself in was and how the rules worked. He does get his head on straight and work toward his new goal. The writing was descriptive and really gave us an understanding of what was going on from the mc point of view. It’s an interesting world that I look forward to seeing what happens next. Give this one a try it may surprise you. I also did enjoy a more sci-fi story to the fantasy one that have really taken over the genre. This had a good mix of both in my opinion.

Very short, unusual take. I wavered between three and four but went with four because I can't wait to read the next one. A random Kindle Unlimited find. And a very big cliffhangery twist at the end.

I was very pleasantly surprised by this book. I read the audiobook and have never before enjoyed one that uses sound effects and a cast rather than single narrator. So it was with trepidation that I started. Instead of detracting from it, all of this greatly enhanced the book. The only nitpick I have is that the female narrator pronounced the word exactly with a very strong 'T' which sounded weird to my ears. Other than that, the performances and effects were excellent.

While the start seemed slow, it didn't take long to get to the meat of the story. Adam is a good and relatable character. His attitude about life in general and his sarcasm really won me over. He's not an incredibly in depth character, but he wasn't one dimensional either. Tut was really the star though in my opinion.

While it is clear there is more to the story, the ending also wraps things up in a way that doesn't make me feel like I got unfairly cliff hanged. I'm looking forward to picking up the next book and learning more about the additional characters and Tut.

This book has a lot in common with Ryk E. Spoor's Grand Central Arena, and that book was absolutely amazing. This one is no different, and I want more. This is one of the gems buried in the LitRPG genre mass of book collections, and you owe it to yourself if you're an LitRAPG fan to go get a copy and read it now. Once you're done with that, go to Baen.com, and read the whole Grand Central Arena series, You'll love that one too. It isn't often I give a book five stars, but this one deserves every single star, and more besides. If you're a scifi fan, and better yet, if you're an LitRPG fand, and a scifi fan, you really don't want to miss this series.

Not a Litrpg

I think you'll find that with most of this author's work labeled "litrpg," it barely qualifies as such. Much in the same way that fire technically qualifies as life, his litrpgs also technically qualify. The story itself is interesting and well written. However, I will not give this an above average rating because people looking for a real litrpg need to know to avoid this as it will disappoint you. Honestly, if he removes the very weak "stats" and just called it a sci fi story, it would have been fine. Calling this a litrpg is an insult to actual litrpgs and their authors.

Great addition to the Litrpg genre.

The writing was fantastic and easy to follow. The whole book left little bread crumbs that blew away in the wind, like the other group of humans and the animal companion. I cant wait to read the next book and catch the crumbs and see where the adventure takes me. Amazing story and the only disappoint is that I have to wait for the next one to come out.

It's trying so hard, but the story never manages to pull together.

The MC is a bit too unbearable, and I never feel like he's learning or growing as a person even though that seems to be one of the main points.
The universe has a neat premise, but it never manages to feel complete or cohesive in description or nature.
There's a lack of tension to both the drama and fights, which seems to be mostly a problem of writing.

Great LITRPG!

I loved this book. It has an awesome new and original back story, an amazing and completely unique system of magic and gameplay, and was just an overall all fast paced and great read. The main character is very likable, I even found myself laughing out loud several times at some of his quips. I can’t wait to read more and get to know him and the other characters in his faction better!

A promising finish almost saves this novel from its flaws.

The protagonist has no overarching strategy. Every action set-piece comes out of nowhere and is resolved with as little forewarning. If it wasn't for the author saving the hero each time, the unfairness of the situation would be unbearable.

If you are interested in seeing a similar premise executed with more grace, try "Grand Central Arena" by Ryk E. Spoor.

Just Nope.

I got 10% into the story and literally said "Are you f****** serious?!" There is no way in hell someone gets kidnapped by a government agency and decides that the very first attractive woman he sees, he suddenly only thinks about impressing her! And to top it off, have this blase' 'let's just go with it' attitude. Nope. No really person would act that way.

Fun

It’s a captivating story and I look forward to more. There are some typos, missing words, or wrong words, but they don’t occur often. There are several continuity errors where the character knows before it is stated or calls something by name then names it. In all it is a fun story and quite enjoyable.

Book one

Mistakes: I found only one late in the story.
Plot: Interesting and twisty.
Characters: Interesting and not overpowered.
I'm interested in seeing where this goes and can't give a better, in-depth review without giving a bunch of spoilers.
Check this out and enjoy the ride. 9.7/10

Didn’t see that coming

Adam was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and stopped caring. The people he loved, the trials and tribulations he went through in life, all shattered in a moment. Now kidnapped and stuck in a futuristic ship he has to fight for the survival of humanity. Thank god it doesn’t rest on his humility

Top Tier - the best Sci-fi LitRPG I've read

Sci-fi doesn't usually translate to the RPG genre very well, there are too many variables to juggle especially when you include magic. But Matthew Siege did a good job at paring down to a successful RPG narrative. While it is soft on the RPG elements common in most LitRPG but it is creatively done so that it fits in the narrative well.

Excellent

Great story, good character building, great world creation, and I love the dichotomy of the MC wanting to give up and just die when given a shotty hand, but then giving everything to stay alive when presented the opportunity to stick to some assholes, as that final screw you before shuffling of this mortal coil.
Cannot wait to see where the story goes from here.

This is a distressing novel. It's stupid. Really stupid. And the author's debut novel was the single best LitRPG story I've ever read and one of a vanishing few examples of a genuinely good book in the genre. He doesn't seem to be able to tell the difference between brilliant and stupid. That scares me.

I like the story concept enough it got a 4* from me. The MC is an arrogant tool, far too often. Sometimes the sarcasm is amusing, sometimes I just want to backhand him for being an insufferable prick. He's very self impressed. It's a bit of an empowerment fantasy, which is obnoxious at times, but I can ignore that to some degree.

Doubtful at first

At first the MC’s attitude turned me off of continuing with the book. I almost did not give it a chance, but I’m glad I did. The MC became more likeable and relatable. I feel though that the wnd of the story is the beginning. Looking forward to rmthe 2nd book.

Fantastic start to a series

Love the characters. The MC starts as an understandably depressed and bitter man, but by the end...yeah. The last second twist was fantastic without being a real cliffhanger, I loved it!

Pretty cool!

I like this piece of work, it was well written and flows well. There are flaws within, but it is entertaining regardless. The main character is interesting and yet he is also somewhat cliche at times. The rpg elements are done pretty well too. Read this!

Really cool!

I love the direction that you took the storyline. Some authors are starting to write in the vein where Earth is changed somehow and the survivors are changed in some ways to flourish in the new realities. I’m totally looking forward to reading more from you.

Really well written,

I just really liked this book. It manages to be of the litRPG genre without any of the over done tropes. The characters are realistic and well written. I hope a sequel comes.

Cool ideas

Probably the most American Protagonist I’ve ever seen. Everything seems a little too easy for the main character. He’s not really very good but neither is anyone else. Still enjoyed the book and will read the second one.

Fun romp

It's hardly poetic literature but it is fun, fast paced and the main character feels real. He is the imperfect hero... Sort of. Definitely worth reading, can't wait for more.

Much better than average Gamer style novel

Fun book with more interest in the structure of the story than some harem related sideline. Much closer to old style Sci-Fi novels. I’m looking forward to more.
