To say I was blown away by this book would be an understatement. To say I was in awe that it was a debut would also be an understatement. The plot was complicated yet easily followed. The characters were deep and I felt an instant connection with them. The twists and turns were flawless and got me with every one. There are quite a bit of names introduced in the first few chapters, but once you can make it through that you are in for the ride of your life. This book had constant action and suspense. I'm not usually one for political thrillers but this book was so addicting I might have to reconsider. Don't even think about it, just read this book. You won't be disappointed in the least. I am craving the next in the series, Poisonfeather, and that really says a lot as it has been some time that I have found a book to be that intriguing. Bravo Matthew FitzSimmons and keep up the excellent work! I honestly can't say enough good things about this book. GO BUY IT!!! I received a free copy from Netgalley but will be purchasing a copy for my collection, it was THAT good.

This is Matthew FitzSimmons DEBUT novel, and that statement alone is hard to believe, because the standard he's set is so high. Well, it means we're in for a treat in the future that's for sure.
This is a political thriller, that takes you on a high octane ride that will leave you breathless.
It's full of twists and turns - the suspense was all enveloping, and the plot was brilliant. I swear I was hyperventilating at times! Just read it for yourself, you won't regret it.

The Short Drop is a tense, suspenseful novel which will keep the reader riveted to every page. A senator’s daughter Suzanne Lombard disappears at the age of 14, but it will be some ten years before a secretive team takes action to find out exactly what happened. This group of highly trained individuals need to enlist the aid of Suzanne’s best friend Gibson Vaughn, once the most wanted hacker in America, who is now currently unemployed, feeling discontented and trying to put his past behind him. Maintaining close tabs on him for several days, the elite team watch Vaughn sitting alone in a diner and are finally given the go ahead to approach him with an offer he can’t refuse. And so it begins – a remarkable well constructed conspiracy, along with a cast of powerful characters. I found this book extremely hard to put down and with every chapter it was fast becoming one of my top books read this year. The Short Drop has earned a well deserved spot on Goodreads ‘Best Books of the Month’ and is highly, highly, recommended. It is definitely a perfect ‘10’!

Tensions are High...momentum at operational speed. Tighten your seat belt!
They say "it's not easy to fight City Hall", ... but have you ever tried? I have - and I won.
It took almost 2 years...and all I was trying to say was the DMV made mistake.
I was told every story in the book of how it was impossible to change the records at DMV...(even for an innocent party). Everyone told me it wasn't worth my fight. Injustice had been done. City Hall wasn't going to see the end of me. My case went to the State of California. I was turned away dozens of times - long story short.. I won - all records now clean, money reimbursed,
....another man was found guilty of fraud.
So, it was realistic to me that people of power- corruption in the name of Politics, could manage to keep a secret under wraps for 10 years. But WHY? Why did 'people-of-power' order others killed in order to keep their dark secret hidden?
What happened to Suzanne Lombard? - ( this missing girl), and why hire a man who betrayed your trust once before, to solve the mystery?
They also say ... "Keep your enemies nearby for a reason". Often that enemy just may turn out to be a hero, as in the case in this story with a top notch computer hacker,
Gibson Vaughn.
The reader is constantly trying to figure out which character can be trusted and who
can't. There are several subplots, coverups, conspiracies and twists & turns.
Great suspense and spent energy of WOW and WHEW...enjoyment!!

The short drop sounds innocuous enough, doesn't it? Trust me, you do not want to have anything to do with it. The thing, I mean - not the book. The book is swell.
New life is breathed into a cold case as the ten year anniversary of the disappearance of Suzanne Lombard rolls around. There are lies masquerading as truths, with a bit of politics thrown in for good measure. As in true life, time is the great equalizer. Money can't stop it, power can't squelch it. An impossible coincidence, extreme hacking (ahem - the computer term, not coughing), enhanced interrogations, and buried secrets make for a bang-up debut novel.
This was a Kindle First offering. Thank you.

The Short Drop by Matthew FitzSimmons has to be one of the best debut mystery/thrillers I have read in a very long time. Great suspense, a rapid pace and bad people who will send chills up your spine. I found it very difficult to put this story down to go to work!
The book starts on the ten year anniversary of the disappearance of at the time Senator Lombard’s daughter. He has risen to Vice President and is now running for his party’s nomination for President. Growing up, Gibson Vaughn was the son the Senator’s chief advisor and best friend with his daughter, Suzanne, whom he called ‘Bear’. Gibson’s life at the time of Suzanne’s disappearance was a disaster and he still blames himself for not being there for her. When a picture of Suzanne’s backpack appears, it sets into motion all the moving pieces of this plot into several explosive revelations and dead bodies.
The characters in this story are all extremely well developed, good and bad. The ‘short drop’ scene is intense. The plot is tightly woven with several subplots that do not confuse the reader and are all answered by the end. I cannot recommend this book enough!

Incredible debut political thriller, full of twists and turns and non-stop action!
10 years ago, the daughter of a high ranking Senator, who is now running for the Presidency, goes missing. She is never heard from again and it is believed to be a kidnapping gone bad.
Gibson Vaughn never got over losing his 'Bear'-the nickname he gave her when they were young and growing up together. She was his side-kick, like a little sister he inherited. All until his father committed suicide, and Gibson's life was turned upside down. Deep into his own personal turmoils, he felt he let her down, at a time she really needed him.
Now he has a chance to find out what happened. A picture has surfaced of Bear, one never seen before, so someone out there has information and is finally ready to share it.
The book just explodes from there, taking you on one crazy ride after another. So many bad guys out there trying to stop this team from getting to the truth, but who is the kingpin that hired the bad guys-what do they have to lose if the truth comes out?
There are many layers to this story along with several subplots, but the author executes them perfectly, both in suspense and in timing. There isn't a dull moment in this book-every character has something about them you can love or hate, and the ending was even better than I could have anticipated.
A must read, even if political thrillers aren't your thing. While it's an important element to the story, it is not the main ingredient. There is nothing NOT to like about this book!
I'm excited to have a new author to look out for....I wouldn't even be surprised if we haven't heard the last of Gibson Vaughn and his partners in crime. I know I'd like to hear more from them!

I was able to read this book through Amazon's Kindle First program. Thanks to Amazon and Thomas & Mercer for making it available!
My dad was a pretty voracious reader, and he particularly liked thrillers—Michael Connelly, Lee Child, John Sandford, and Dennis Lehane were among his favorite authors. Whenever I'd read a great book in this genre, especially when it was by a new author or one even I'd never heard of, I always would mention it to him and encourage him to read it. Although he passed away about 18 months ago, I still think of him when I read a great thriller, and wish he was around so I can pass on some more recommendations.
Boy, he would have loved Matthew FitzSimmons' The Short Drop , and I did, too. It's honestly been a while since I've gotten totally immersed in a book like this, one that left me breathlessly turning pages and wishing that the phone wouldn't ring during lunch so I could see how the book ended. It has some great action, characters that are much more complex than they appear on the surface (although some are just what you'd expect), and there's even a few twists I didn't see coming.
Ten years ago, 14-year-old Suzanne Lombard disappeared from her home. By all accounts, it appeared she ran away to meet a mystery boyfriend, although her trail quickly went cold. Suzanne wasn't just any runaway, however—at the time of her disappearance, her father was a U.S. senator, and his political star rose as his family grieved for their missing daughter.
Gibson Vaughn was the son of Benjamin Lombard's trusted chief of staff, and he was in essence an older brother to Suzanne. They were tremendously close, until a scandal rocked the Vaughn family, leading to tragedy, and sending Gibson to the Marines, where his legendary hacking skills were put to good use.
As the 10th anniversary of Suzanne's disappearance draws closer, Benjamin Lombard, now the vice-president, is expected to become the next President of the United States. At the same time, Lombard's former security chief asks Gibson, a former nemesis, to help him with a covert investigation into Suzanne's disappearance. It's not long before Gibson helps uncover a tangled web of secrets that have the potential to destroy many lives—and put the lives of Gibson and his investigative partners at risk, not to mention force him to relive emotional moments from his past that he tried to forget.
I found this book utterly compelling from start to finish. I tend to get irritated when the villains in thrillers are all-seeing, all-knowing, and always one step ahead of the protagonists, but it is a testament to FitzSimmons' storytelling ability that I wasn't bothered when that happened in this book. You don't know who to trust, and my head was spinning with possibilities about where the plot would go. Sure, you may have to suspend a little disbelief here and there, but I bought the story hook, line, and sinker.
If you're a fan of taut thrillers with at least a little bit of emotional complexity, get yourself a copy of The Short Drop . I can't believe this is FitzSimmons' first book; I definitely can't wait to see what's next for him.

4+ This is the book I didn't want to put down. It is also an amazing début novel. Just loved the character of Gibson Vaughn, his history, his relationship with Bear and his mixed feelings over the suicide of his father. Powerful men, men with connections, a woman who is dogged in the pursuit of once again regaining the status her family one held. Non stop action, never knowing who was trustworthy, who is lying, wanting to know the real story, is what keeps you reading, turning the pages. What did happen to fourteen year Suzanne Campbell? Secrets, lies, conspiracies, the denouement a total surprise. The getting there a total pleasure.
Can't wait to read what this author writes next.

When a young mans best friend goes missing and shortly thereafter his father commits suicide, he gives up on any kind of write or wrong in his life. Unfortunately this, couldn't care less, attitude ends him up in jail for a serious hacking charge. The judge gives him a choice jail or the Marines. Shortly after he is released from service, he is approached by a team of political shakers that need his help to sort out the mystery behind his best friends disappearance. What he starts to uncover is is years of corruption and unthinkable acts that encapsulate many unexplained murders. Maybe now he can get some answers that have been plaguing him for most of his life. A fast paced, suspenseful thriller that is completely engrossing.

When a Goodreads friend wrote an enthusiastic review for this book, it looked like a winner to me, so I hurriedly purchased it. My friend was right and it was!! Remember this is a debut novel, and it's excellent.
A young girl, loved by many, goes missing and ten years later the secret is slowly revealed. There are several threads to follow. The main character is a former hacker, former Marine, now unemployed. He carries a burden, but is presented a way to unload and clear up the mystery.
I really liked how the story flowed so smoothly. Some authors write like they're sitting with you and telling the story. This story had me from Page 1 and never let go.
I had no idea what a "short drop" was until nearly the end of this book, and I'm not likely to forget it now.

THE SHORT DROP by Matthew FitzSimmons is one of the best Debut Crime Thriller of 2015 that I have read. He has produced an amazing piece of crime fiction. ‘The Short Drop’ is an addictive thriller, rich with political intrigue and mystery.
I have to say that I am not normally drawn to political thrillers, but given the praise this book was receiving, I decided to leave my comfort zone of reading mystery suspense crime psychological thrillers, and branch out a bit. Boy was I glad I took that chance, because I would have missed out on reading one of the best crime fiction novels that I have ever read. I read where the author stated that he records or tracks the chapters of his book, POV, plot points, status of characters in an excel spreadsheet. Seeing the “big picture” was critical for him. What a super concept, and it definitely shows that with all the subplots going on and diversified characters, the author is able to maintain absolute control over the development of the novel. As a BSA, I myself use excel all the time.
Gibson Vaughn a computer hacker, an ex-marine, working out of Virginia is trying to locate his childhood friend, Suzanne Lombard (he called her “bear”) the daughter of the American vice president. Suzanne was an avid reader and only fourteen years old when she went missing. Her disappearance has haunted Gibson since he was a teenager. Now, closing in on the tenth anniversary of her death, he has been given a chance to help solve the mystery.
George Abe, who once worked for Lombard, is now working on his own in his consulting company, and he needs Gibson’s help. He also utilizes an ex-CIA and an ex-LA police detective to make this happen.
Gibson‘s dad was Lombard’s right hand man and chief of staff. Gibson and Suzanne grew up together and spent special time together.
But who kidnapped Suzanne? Is she still alive after 10 years? Who are the good guys and who are the bad guys? Gibson must find out the truth.

An entertaining read however it did take me quite awhile to actually get into this novel and I am not sure how much this was down to the plot development or the busy time of year I chose to read this book. I liked the plot and the characters so a solid 3 star read for me.

Honestly, I don't know how to review this book. It is truly so good and exciting and surprising and breathtaking! It's truly an 'edge of your seat' read.
The plot development was impeccable, the twist and turns were actually surprising. I'm usually good at guessing the twists and secrets but this book really did a number on me. I only guessed one thing right. It was also a very fast read, and I didn't want to put it down, I needed to know more about the characters and what was going to happen to them.
One of the things about The Short Drop that surprised me the most was how all the events narrated made sense and, scary as it is, could happen in real life.
The Short Drop was a fantastic read, even more so when you realize it was Matthew FitzSimmons first novel. I am looking forward to read more from him and I'll be waiting anxiously for Poisonfeather, Gibson Vaughn's next adventure.

I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed reading this debut by Matthew Fitzsimmons. I will definitely be reading the sequel!

That about sums up the plot of Matthew FitzSimmons’ The Short Drop. Suzanne Lombard, the fourteen-year-old daughter of Senator Benjamin Lombard disappears. Ten years later, she is presumed dead, perhaps the victim of a pedophile. Her father, now Vice President, is running for President. Gibson Vaughn is the son of the late advisor to Senator Lombard. Gibson, who considered Suzanne to be like a younger sister, is recruited by the former head of Senator Lombard’s security to investigate the case. “Son”, as Suzanne called him, was known as a hacker who served as a Marine in lieu of prison time.
What happened to his beloved “Bear”? Gibson Vaughn is ready, willing, and capable of lending his considerable technical skills to the investigation. With former CIA agent Jenn Charles and her partner, ace surveillance man Dan Hendricks, Gibson embarks on a mission that leads him to the dark days of his past, memories that haunt him. What else will he encounter?
Gibson Vaughn is a divorced father of a young girl. He seems to have a gentle heart, and I was pulling for him all the way. Would he find his friend Bear alive after all this time? I didn’t think so, but I hoped…He loves diner food, baseball, and his daughter. What he learns during the long journey is painful and yet, cathartic, I think. Some of his worst memories are dispelled, and some of the best are fortified. He comes out stronger in the end, I believe.
Initially, I found the book confusing, and I had to backtrack several times to learn who was who. As the story progressed, the plot became more and more complex. Who were the good guys? The not-so-good guys? The bad guys? The really bad guys? I was able to figure out some pieces of the puzzle, but there were some aspects that had to be right in front of me before I recognized them. So much fun! After a while, I didn’t mind not knowing which end was up because this book was terribly addicting and hard to put down. Murders, suicides, political control – talk about absolute power corrupting absolutely! Wow! And not being a computer whiz, I marveled at Vaughn’s techie skills. Did I understand it all? Heck no! But it was great fun!
The Short Drop has so much going for it – suspense, mystery, tension, action, and even a touch of romance. Even if you think it’s not your style, you might be surprised. I give it 4.5 stars.

Matthew FitzSimmons in his debut novel has created an extremely likable but flawed character in Gibson Vaughn, a legendary hacker, who has now been struggling in life as a low level IT guy. Vaughn used his knowledge of hacking in his teenage years that cost him his reputation. He now has a chance to rebuild his career when he is asked to join in the investigation of Suzanne Lombard, a girl who disappeared ten years ago. Lombard, the daughter of a presidential hopeful, was a childhood friend of Vaughn, so the emotions run deep as he looks into her disappearance.
This is not my typical read with cyber hackers and conspiracies, but I really enjoyed FitzSimmons' storytelling. He seems to know which characters to build on, and he moves the story at a pace that kept me guessing. I am looking forward to his next book, Poisonfeather (Gibson Vaughn #2), due out later this year.

Cracking political thriller that manages to be clever, exciting, and emotional all at once. I would never have thought this was a debut, this is the work of a writer many years into their career.

This was an Amazon Kindle First pick for me and has been sitting on my shelf unread until I seen all the excellent reviews here on Goodreads for this debut novel. I must say I haven't read a Political Thriller in quite some time and I am so glad that I decided to read this one.
The Short Stop was well-written, action-packed, interesting, and had quite a few gripping characters. I really enjoyed how the author introduced us to each character and brought life to them. It was really entertaining and amusing. I did have to go back and read a few chapters again, near the beginning of the book as I missed some info the first time around. It was hard to keep track of who was who and did what. Some of the twists were a little predictable for me but the end reveal was not!
Looking forward to reading the next book as there were some unanswered questions that I need answered and I definitely need to visit these characters again. The Short Drop, very clever title thought it was perfect.
It was an impressive, fast-paced, quick and easy read with a satisfying ending.

A Back-Dated Unsatisfactory Ending Alert
Review of the Brilliance Audio audiobook (December 1, 2015) released simultaneously with the Thomas & Mercer hardcover.

Breathy, raspy narration with a dramatic pause at the end of every sentence ruined this one for me. (Someone on Audible described it as "I'm Batman!" narration). Maybe it would have been a 3 or a 4 otherwise, but I had to keep distancing myself from the mannerism so as to not be distracted by it. That resulted in my losing focus on the plot. I actually had to listen to the final 60 minutes twice in order to be sure I hadn't missed anything. And yes, the ending was still unsatisfying the 2nd time through. Your results may differ if you are reading a paper/eCopy.
This review pre-dated the invention of the Unsatisfactory Ending Alert, but I had an opportunity to reformat and update, so why not?

Where do I start? Computer hacking- Unsolved crimes? and then their is politics- which is just about criminal most of the time in the best of circumstances. I have to say that the start of this book was a tad bit slow- almost to the point of me not even bothering- BUT, with all my pals here at GoodReads- I decided to just plow thru it and keep on reading. I'm very glad I did!
The bulk of this story is the disappearance of Benjamin Lombard's 14 year old daughter, Suzanne. He is currently the Vice President of the United States, and running for President- at the time when his daughter disappeared he was a Senator.
Gibson Vaughn, legendary hacker and marine the case is personal—Suzanne Lombard had been like a sister to him. On the tenth anniversary of her disappearance, the former head of Benjamin Lombard’s security asks for Gibson’s help in a covert investigation of the case, with new evidence in hand.
From here the story takes us through the ups and downs and the amazing cast of characters involving this young girls disappearance.
What I can tell you is this book had all the fixings of being a 5 star read. It has a terrific plot and strong characters. What it needs is to be crisply edited for grammar, sentence structure, and mini-plots that go nowhere, and at times unnecessary characters. These are distracting and, often, confusing elements of the book. And a few times I was confused enough to go back and re-read a few things.
Having said that - I'm so glad that I read this book and I will most certainly read the second in this series. You will , towards the very end of the book find out what indeed "The short drop" is.

The Short Drop is a mystery/political thriller. My grandpa loved this genre and when I was little I just read everything I could lay my eyes on. That's when I started reading these intense action crime thrillers. I haven't read anything like it for a long time, but I was positively impressed throughout the whole book. I wasn't expecting to love it as much as I did.
First things first, let's dive into the plot summary.
A decade ago, fourteen-year-old Suzanne Lombard, the daughter of Benjamin Lombard—then a senator, now a powerful vice president running for the presidency—disappeared in the most sensational missing-person case in the nation’s history. Still unsolved, the mystery remains a national obsession.For legendary hacker and marine Gibson Vaughn, the case is personal—Suzanne Lombard had been like a sister to him.
On the tenth anniversary of her disappearance, the former head of Benjamin Lombard’s security asks for Gibson’s help in a covert investigation of the case, with new evidence in hand.Haunted by tragic memories, he jumps at the chance to uncover what happened all those years ago. Using his military and technical prowess, he soon discovers multiple conspiracies surrounding the Lombard family—and he encounters powerful, ruthless political players who will do anything to silence him and his team.

Okay, these were my reactions after turning every page. It was either WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON or OMG I DIDN'T EXPECT THAT.
Do you know what I mean? Mind-blowing I tell you.
Matthew FitzSimmons's debut novel is phenomenal. It crosses many genre: psycho, thriller, mystery, techno, political and action crime. The book is an intense page-turner packed with suspense and wit. I was hooked from the beginning, but the best part starts about 100 pages after. It's hard to believe it was a debut novel.
The plot was so well thought and I just couldn't figure it out. That's when you know a mystery book is good. I usually predict the culprit and the likely ending towards or just after half of the book. This time was different. I understood who was involved in everything, but I didn't know HOW and WHY. Mind-blowing and sick.
There was a great variety of characters and I liked that, it made the story more interesting. I personally loved Gibson Vaughn. He is a computer hacker in search of a childhood friend. You could feel his pain and need to find her, you just knew that connection between them was so pure. Her disappearance has hunted him since he was a troubled teenager and now he wants to find the truth. Now, he is 28 and a total mess. Gibson Vaughn is a complicated and flawed hero. While reading I could feel a connection with him, the readers are the audience of this story and they're looking it from behind Gibson's shoulders. We were his readers's army.
The other characters I was fond of were Jenn Charles and Hendricks, the two "agents" who recruited Gibson for ACG in order to solve the mystery and discover Suzanne's fate. Jenn Charles at first gave the impression of being an unpleasant woman with a bad disposition. I was glad I was proved wrong, really glad. She is is put off at first by Gibson's hostile demeanor(wait I thought she was the hostile one). But she soon gives in to his “rough-around-the-edges charm” and pale green eyes, and so will plenty of readers, me included. Hendricks was the strong personality of the group, the "go-and-get-it" one. He was the hard one, but I knew deep down he had a good heart.
Other two characters I felt a deep connection with were Suzanne and WR8TH. Suzanne was a sweet character from the beginning. We only know her through other people's perspectives, but we always get the same feeling. At first we are pushed to think of her as a rebellious teenager, but we are given many different choices after that. She was an avid reader and manages to communicate with everyone involved thanks to a book of hers. (I would love to say more about it but I don't really spoil it for anyone else. I think the best part when reading a book like this is figuring it all out by ourselves. So I won't say anything more.) After we know what happened to her, at the very end of the story, I am sure you will mind-blown. Told you it was a mind-blowing book. WR8TH was a character we weren't supposed to like during the first half of the book. BUT. Things change and we actually discover he is one of the good ones.I can't say anything else ugh Anyway, I really loved him and I wanted him to have a proper ending. I sure hope it didn't end how we were supposed to guess in the book.
The two "evil" characters were Calista and the professional killer hired to kill all of them. Their presence was necessary and, even though I didn't like them as human beings, I thoroughly enjoyed how they were involved. What they were doing was sick and I don't even know how to describe it. Just read the book.
The writing was impeccable. I was drawn to the story and the author just made me want to turn the pages, I couldn't put the book down. In fact, I just read it one sitting if we don't count the 68 pages I had read the day before. I personally found it compelling from the beginning. I usually don't enjoy when the villains are all-seeing and all-knowing, but thanks to FitzSimmons's ability in storytelling this time it didn't bothered me one bit. You don't know who to trust and your head is spinning with possibilities about where the plot could go. And I was of course an enthusiast of all of this.
The main themes I found recurring during the story, besides the principal plot line, were politics and Information Technology. Both were intriguing and added that special feeling to the book. I personally loved to read more of the second one, it is a subject I am very interested about. All the descriptions and little details were very well-written and well-thought. Everything was plausible and realistic.
I am not very fond of political matters, but we get to see a small part of it and all the intrigues and tricks used in this kind of situation. It can be complex, but I enjoyed reading about it.
The Short Drop was an amazing read and I HIGHLY recommend it, I can't say it enough. “The Short Drop” may not be an attention-grabbing title. But when I came upon what that phrase means, I nearly jumped out of my chair. Stand forewarned.

Jenn Charles at first gave the impression of being an unpleasant woman with a bad disposition. I was glad I was proved wrong, really glad. She is is put off at first by Gibson's hostile demeanor
Other two characters I felt a deep connection with were Suzanne and WR8TH. Suzanne was a sweet character from the beginning. We only know her through other people's perspectives, but we always get the same feeling. At first we are pushed to think of her as a rebellious teenager, but we are given many different choices after that. She was an avid reader and manages to communicate with everyone involved thanks to a book of hers. (I would love to say more about it but I don't really spoil it for anyone else. I think the best part when reading a book like this is figuring it all out by ourselves. So I won't say anything more.) After we know what happened to her, at the very end of the story, I am sure you will mind-blown. Told you it was a mind-blowing book. WR8TH was a character we weren't supposed to like during the first half of the book. BUT. Things change and we actually discover he is one of the good ones.
The two "evil" characters were Calista and the professional killer hired to kill all of them. Their presence was necessary and, even though I didn't like them as human beings, I thoroughly enjoyed how they were involved. What they were doing was sick and I don't even know how to describe it. Just read the book.
The writing was impeccable. I was drawn to the story and the author just made me want to turn the pages, I couldn't put the book down. In fact, I just read it one sitting if we don't count the 68 pages I had read the day before. I personally found it compelling from the beginning. I usually don't enjoy when the villains are all-seeing and all-knowing, but thanks to FitzSimmons's ability in storytelling this time it didn't bothered me one bit. You don't know who to trust and your head is spinning with possibilities about where the plot could go. And I was of course an enthusiast of all of this.
The main themes I found recurring during the story, besides the principal plot line, were politics and Information Technology. Both were intriguing and added that special feeling to the book. I personally loved to read more of the second one, it is a subject I am very interested about. All the descriptions and little details were very well-written and well-thought. Everything was plausible and realistic.
I am not very fond of political matters, but we get to see a small part of it and all the intrigues and tricks used in this kind of situation. It can be complex, but I enjoyed reading about it.

The Short Drop was an amazing read and I HIGHLY recommend it, I can't say it enough. “The Short Drop” may not be an attention-grabbing title. But when I came upon what that phrase means, I nearly jumped out of my chair. Stand forewarned.
Also, I cannot wait for the next book, and more from Gibson. Stay tuned for the second book in this exciting new series, coming Fall 2016. Poisonfeather (The Gibson Vaughn Series Book 2).

This was a very well done story. I have had a copy of this book for years and finally decided to give it a try. I am finding that I have overlooked a lot of great novels over the years and this book is one of them. This book was able to grab me right away and I, along with everyone in the story, wanted to know what really happened to Suzanne. I really enjoyed the time I spent listening to this story.
14-year-old Suzanne Lombard disappeared ten years ago. At the time, her father was a well-known senator but he is now the vice president and is currently running for president. There was one surveillance video of Suzanne that surfaced shortly after she disappeared but nobody has seen her since. Everyone wants to know what happened and where she is now.
Gibson Vaughn knew Suzanne when they were kids. Gibson's father worked for Lombard and as a result, Gibson and Suzanna spent a lot of time together when they were children. Gibson has his own issues from the past to deal with and is no longer on good terms with Lombard. He decides to sign on with a group trying to finally get to the bottom of Suzanne's disappearance. I liked Gibson a lot and had a good feeling that he would be able to find out what really happened.
This was a very well thought out mystery. Every piece of information that comes up could become important later in the story. I really enjoyed seeing all of the pieces of the puzzle come together to show the full picture. There is a lot going on in this story but I thought that it worked very well. Everything really made sense and the story felt very possible. I liked that the mystery was able to keep me guessing. There were some pretty big surprises and some excitement that really kept the story moving forward.
I thought that the narrator did a good job with the story. Some of the voices that he used were very similar and I found that I really had to pay attention to determine who was speaking. He had a very soothing voice that I found easy to listen to for hours at a time.
I would recommend this book to others. I thought that it was a wonderfully layered and detailed mystery that was able to really make me think. I wouldn't hesitate to read more from this author in the future.

Excellent debut novel, with quality political intrigue and well-developed, yet complex characters. Gibson Vaughn is the son of a political hack, who committed suicide after Gibson's computer hacking found data implicating Senator Benjamin Lombard of theft, and the subsequent investigation pinned the crime on his father. Instead of jail, Gibson is allowed to serve in the military, but finds his employment is stymied by the vengeful Senator, who is now Vice President and seeking the Presidency. Gibson's only close friend was Lombard's daughter, Suzanne, who disappeared at age 14. Gibson is given a chance to find out what happened to her, and finds himself in big trouble as there are many parties, who wish to let sleeping dogs lie. Suspenseful, yet believable. However, FitzSimmons does not allow readers to see what happens in the pivotal confrontation. At least this gives him something to improve on in his next book. Recommended.

The Short Drop is a great book, one which belies the fact that it was a debut from the author.
Thrillers do not feature frequently in my reading repertoire but when I get hold of a good one, it becomes literally unputdownable. Maybe that's why I don't read them as much as that can be exhausting. Given the genre for what it is, I firmly believe that there is no point for long reviews as it will only serve to reveal too much of the book and hence reduce the excitement of turning its pages.
A missing person, political intrigue, cyber-hacking & investigations, and a hired assassin. This novel has all the necessary ingredients to make a good thriller but in order to make it great, the delivery needed to be well-executed. FitzSimmons succeeded in doing so. The tension, suspense and intrigue were tightly paced throughout the story with great characters complemented by a well-crafted and clever plot.
The titular Gibson Vaughn, is an ex-marine and legendary hacker who had been approached by a covert organisation to investigate the disappearance of the well-loved daughter of a politically powerful figure. A man with a tumultuous past, Gibson also had a personal and close relationship with the missing person that only served to make the story even more engaging and the plot more involving. To cap it all off, the disappearance occurred a decade ago. The prose was simple and crisp, with a narrative that balances the fast-paced momentum of the plot while ensuring sufficient character development for both the main protagonist and the supporting cast.
I highly recommend this book, for fans of thrillers or just anyone who is looking for a riveting read.

I found this to be a well-written thriller, with lots of surprises and well-drawn characters. Suspense is maintained throughout the book and clearly, FitzSimmons is knowledgeable about cyber-hacking which is at the heart of the novel. A worthwhile read.

This was such an awesome read! It was quite slow in the beginning, but gives you just enough to keep you interested. Then the last half is just unputdownable. A few of the “mysteries” in the book are very easy to call, but the execution is just SO GOOD that I didn’t even care. The part I disliked was the political parts, but they are also done so well that they didn’t take away from my enjoyment of the book. Highly recommend this one!

It's that good
I'm often suspicious of books that receive a lot of 5-star reviews and no/few pans. Who are all these reviewers? Friends of the author? Easily deluded customers?
I'd been skipping the Kindle First selections because most had proven to be a waste of time. Yes, free is nice, but my time is worth something, and many of those books weren't worth even the $0 price.
Short Drop, conversely, is not only the best KF ever, it's one of the best thrillers I've read in a while. Fun characters, twisted but not convoluted plot, hard to put down (I was reading it at stoplights, grateful, for once, for miserable traffic.)
If you're looking for a book to escape to, this should be high on your list.

Still finding my way around NetGalley.com, this was one of my first approved requests and boy, did I hit the jackpot. Matthew FitzSimmons first novel is a spellbinder. ‘The Short Drop’ is an immersive thriller, rich with political intrigue and complex familial mystery.
The story opens in an all-American diner. Ex-marine Gibson Vaughn occupies a booth while searching for a way to support an ex-wife and six year old daughter. A T.V. newsbreak recaps the disappearance of Suzanne Lombard, Gibson’s childhood playmate and daughter of family friend senator Benjamin Lombard.
Her abduction occurred almost ten years prior, after Gibson’s infamous computer hacking stunt that exposed dodgy dealings within Lombard’s cartel. But all was not as it seemed and Vaughn’s own father ended his life after becoming implicated in the scandal.
Now, with a questionable record blocking his way, he’s desperate for honest work when approached by someone from his past. It’s marked as ‘Book 1’ and even though it’s unclear how much more of this story could be teased out, I wouldn’t be sorry to see more of Gibson Vaughn.
