A sadistic serial murderer, known only as Mister Redford, attacks a couple and abducts a woman. She is not his first abductee - the others have been presumed dead. There are no bodies, just tapes deliberately planted to mock the police.
Years after the Redford murders, Molly Radcliffe, a divorcée, takes on a troubled foster child - John. John is pleasant most of the time but strange accidents soon start to happen around him. Molly is driven to her wits end with John when a near tragedy drives her into the arms of a handsome neighbor - a man she had never really known until after the incident.
She falls fast and hard for him, as he takes her and her foster son on. He seems to be everything she wanted in a man - good looking, attentive and warm towards her. Everything is good until John stumbles upon something he shouldn't have in Molly's new man's home. When her new man is cold towards John about his discovery, subtly warning him off, the boy starts to wonder if Molly's new man is too good to be true.
a friend asked me to read this book and i was pleasantly surprised at how good the story-line was. i thoroughly enjoyed reading this and would advice everyone to burn through the pages like i did. THe story was really intense and the characters all had some depth and layers to them. My favorite was John. His vulnerability just endeared me to him. Guess that might have been the mother in me not wanting him to come to any harm.
All i have to say is wow!!! My jaw dropped towards the end when the killer got found out. that scene just got me all emotional and i am a bloke. this writer is truly gifted.
The story begins with a woman answering her front door - it's a man delivering a pizza. He asks to go inside and she says yes. The next thing she knows is the man's wearing a mask over his face...
DCI Laura Abagnale arrives at the crime scene - she's looking for clues as to what happened to Simone and Andrew Forester - he was killed by the "delivery man". When Abagnale returns to her car - she finds an envelope with the name "Mister Redford" - written in blood! Inside the envelope, there is a memory card with the words "Play Me". When Abagnale views the videos - she is horrified at what she sees!
I'll not say anymore...you'll have to read it yourself!
It's a story of murder, abuse, betrayal and deception. I found the backstories intriguing - it shows what made the characters tick. The abuse - mentally and physically as children - made John and Henry who they were now as adults.
This story is an absolute page-turner! It grabs you from the beginning to the end. Kate's attention to detail is vivid and dramatic. You get a sense of the brutality and mental illness due to severe physical and mental abuse.
If you have the time - I recommend giving this book a read! You won't be disappointed!
The characters in this book are unbelievably realistic and the level of detail would give Mister Steven king a run for his money. What a heart thumper!!!
A good read that will keep you gripped from page one, not my usual read but still good. I received this book via the author, if psychological thrillers are your thing, then this is the read for you! Full of shocking moments and the way it is written you can really understand how the story unfolds, from the history of the characters.
This book was explosive from the get go. The words and the way the author used them just had me hooked and on the edge of my plastic chair in the i-am-thrilled sort of way!!!
this had a chilling feel to the start, almost as if this was something that could happen to you in real life. imagine opening the door and the delivery guy was not who you thought he was meant to be. Also i like that the author touched on some mental health issues with a boy called John who seemed to be the protagonist in this story. i can say that this book was anything but dull. Each chapter was imaginative and thought provoking. i would urge you guys to read it.
Is this even a book? I've never read anything this messy and with such amateurish feel to it. Feels like a rough drawing of a story that the author never cared to write properly in the end. Plus it would do with some serious proofreading. The first two chapters are about a DCI who is solving two crimes - a murdered man and his missing wife (not the first case) in the first chapter, and a hurt woman dying on the steps of a church where she gave birth to a baby boy. The DCI finds some suspicious packet with blood on it in her car. She tears it open without putting gloves on or having it processed first. Chapter two is ultimate chaos. The woman dies, DCI comes to the crime scene, then she gets messages someone has been waiting for her over an hour to have a date with her. She goes there, still referred to as DCI even though she's not at work anymore... and then receives a phone call that the woman is the abductee from chapter 1 and that the kid could be the murderer's. However, they cannot get his DNA as he's adopted. What the hack??? Must be the fastest adoption in known history. Then it continues with a little kid John who doesn't sound like a kid at all. What primary school kid would say e.g. '...soft female voice permeated my ears.' The book is full of mistakes (printing and otherwise), American and British English mixed together, repeated words, excessive words... - rushing water rushed over my skin... Then 'rushed over my skin' again. - He always usual had his way. (Make up your mind!!!) - My whole entire body... - Don't wonder off anywhere. - 3 am in the morning (because it's necessary to double the info.) - 10 pm - late for school (well, 10 pm would really be late... ) - baring his bare knuckles - Tears dropped fell from my eyes - as he seeped the warm tea from a generic white tea cup... - I was so intrigued by what had got had gotten him... (The author obviously didn't know which English she should prefer...) - to have the much needed catch up chat that they needed...
I'm afraid preteenage sweat doesn't smell as the author suggested twice... A dog gets killed and mere minutes later he's already half eaten by ravens... Why the hack did the DCI go to Molly's? What was the connection??? Molly's soon to be mother-in-law wanted coffee, Molly prepared coffee and yet upon bringing it to her said: I have the tea.' Also it is said that John is cuffed to the table in prison. Yet he attacks a psychologist with his hands.
I could go on forever. Totally ruined idea, story disjointed. Sometimes you have no idea WHEN you are at a particular moment as the timeline is so weird...

I got sucked into this book after seeing the beautiful cover. the words were just as mesmerizing as the dazzling blue cover. I did not want the story to end but alas i finished the book and loved every second of it. i would recommend crime thriller or suspense or horror book fans to give this book a read.
I must say, this was one fast-paced thriller which I really did enjoy reading. There was certainly lots of layers to this book. It was like an nesting egg. The more you open, the more you find. I would recommend this.
I Will admit i was expecting this to be the generic cop catches the serial killer book but where the bodies rest turned out to have deeper layers than that with the author delving into mental health and really emotional stuff. i got to see the killer's side of things and got to feel some sympathy for the killer on some level. the killer wasn't the mindless slashing kind of monster. there was a person beneath the monster.
Good job on this one Kate. it is 5 stars from me. when is book 2 out?
This is a masterful piece of writing from Kate Sten. She should be proud of this piece of crime fiction. I almost thought i was in a crime scene series, reading this book. the detail in the descriptions here just blows your mind and bedazzles. i felt drawn into the book and i connected and empathized with the characters quite naturally.
definitely giving this one top marks. Defo buy this. it is worth it.
there was nothing slow or dull about this book. i quickly found myself at the middle page of the book. the writing was fast paced and hit the right crescendos when it needed to. i thoroughly enjoyed this read and would urge others to read kate sten's book too.
this was a real steal for $0.99, considering the book really packed a punch for the price tag. it was a thriller that had me hooked from the first page. it was not bloated with too much gore like other books in similar genre but there was a believable plot and characters that provoked empathy in the reader.
This was a treasure. The descriptiveness of the scenes in the book was just beyond belief and OMG, don't even get me started with the suspense element.
This book reminded me of saw and some memorable CSI series. I can say the words made the scenes very vivid, as if you were experiencing the events yourself. Kudos to the author for this wonderful book. I feel previleged to have read this book.
This book was intense and kept my heart racing. The start of the book was simply eerily creepy and the serial killer reminded me of the guy from saw. Though he had more layers to him than your typical psychopath. This would definitely be worth the small investment of $0.99. If you love the serial killer genre or psychological thrillers - this one is a must read.
I was recommended this book by one of the authors friends, and although I've never read a book recommended to me by someone I don't know I thought 'why not'.
I think this book is a bit of mess all round, and needs a serious round of editing and redrafting.
It starts with a home invasion and the first two chapters are about a DCI on a case, who is incompetent and rude, and then the books jumps to John who has been adopted and has issues with blackouts.
The DCI does not seem to know what she is doing - smokes at a crime scene, doesn't notice a package left on her drivers seat, handles it without gloves, then put the SD card she finds into her own phone. Although states she is an experienced DCI. She goes to a crime scene with forensics but then does the forensics work herself. She walks into another crime scene a year later and the victim has dark hair and the same build as a previous case and connects them on the spot - although the way this victim has died is completely different to the other case. She goes into someones home and just because she sees a boot that is the same make as her crime scene decides to bag them - with no warrant and no cause to be at that address.
Parts of the books just don't make sense, and there is no flow. One of the pregnant victims escapes and makes it to a church and the Vicar says she looks in a bad way, don't call an ambulance, they won't be able to do anything for her - go and fetch the midwife. Who herself calls an ambulance. Why would you not call the ambulance? She stumbles into the church and the first thing they say is the paramedics won't be able to save her. The previous explanation of the character was not that she in an awful state so how can they make this assessment so quickly? There is also an episode where John is having counselling and blacks out and one moment he is clawing himself, and the next chapter he was clawing the counsellor. It's a bit of a nonsensical ramble.
The author is writing about a DCI - so based in England - but this book does not have a British feeling to it. The DCI's weight is given in kilograms and the child is at primary school - rather than what year they are in.
There were characters who were inconsequential in the book and the kept on being described as the dark-haired women, the raven-haired women, short-haired man, scruffy man, guy in the face cap. The women who is attacked at the start was described so many times as the dark-haired women that she could have at least been given a name, or described a different way.
This is not really a thrilling book, and it needs some serious rework.
this was just amazing from page one to the end. could not believe the how well the plot held together and how entrancing the characters seemed to be. this would definitely one of my top picks for detective/crime thriller reads
