This book has left me a little flabbergasted 😮 I don’t know how to put in to words how well @harri_atkins_author has written this book and drawn me in to such a messed up family with so many secrets that you can hardly take them all in!
I was so invested in the story and the characters however finding it hard to like the majority of them. The twists and turns this book takes around the MC Brendan leaves you with so many emotions towards him, I loved him, I hated him, I felt his heartbreak and sorrow throughout the book it was an absolute page turner.
The plot is filled with just the right amount of romance, family drama and politics. Filled with passion, violence, petty crime, betrayal and heartbreak for many of the characters.
An ending I never expected and made me well up in so many ways i wish it turned out different for many of the characters.

The O’Rourkes are a messed up family and I honestly hope there is a sequel 🙏🏻

Brendan O’Rourke grew up feeling he was different from his family. So, when he meets the love of his life he’s determined to keep his past and present as far apart as possible. The O’Rourke family are a formidable force that exists against a backdrop of petty crime, family feuds and violence. Despite Brendan’s best intentions, his family has other plans…. plans that involve using any means to get what they want. Can Brendan keep his past hidden in order to protect the future he’s always wanted?

This is a truly mesmerising, authentic read. There is so much happening and so much to unpick. The research and detail regarding human behaviour is second to none. It is a raw and uncompromising read that scratches way beneath the surface of a very dysfunctional family. The need to survive is at the core of their dysfunction and they will do literally anything to ensure that survival. The intergenerational trauma is hard hitting and impactful as a reader. Passion, betrayal, violence, and heartbreak in every chapter. The ending, whilst bittersweet, was perfect for the story.

Have you ever wanted to stop reading a book because it made you uncomfortable… but couldn’t put it down?

Inside the Cuckoo’s Nest is dark, gritty, and genuinely disturbing. This is one of the most messed-up fictional families I’ve read about in a long time, and I’m still thinking about it.

The O’Rourke family pulled me in immediately. The story twists and turns in ways that had me equal parts shocked and horrified ~ there were moments I wanted to shut the book and walk away. And yet… I couldn’t stop reading. I had to know what happened next.

The writing is authentic and painfully believable, especially in how it portrays family dysfunction and destructive behavioural patterns. Betrayal, heartbreak, violence, and warped family bonds run through every page.

This book is not an easy read, but it’s a powerful one. Unsettling, intense, and unforgettable. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Thank you so much to @harri_atkins_author for sending me a copy to read and review 🩵🩵🩵

I'd seen so many amazing reviews of this book that when Harri asked me if i wanted to read it, I jumped at the chance. It was so much more than you'd expect from looking at the beautiful cover!

I've honestly never read anything like it, and I'm sure my review won't do it justice.

I loved Harri's writing style from the beginning, and I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. Harri takes you through so many emotions as you turn the pages and discover more about this extremely toxic and dysfunctional family.

Brendan, the MC, has grown up with a life of petty crime, family feuds, betrayal, and violence, and this is what he is trying to escape, especially after meeting the love of his life. However, he keeps getting drawn back, as no one is able to stand up to their father, Lester. He rules the roost and teaches his sons to settle arguments with their fists.

Some readers might find parts of the storyline quite hard to read, so please check trigger warnings. Personally, the rawness and brutality were what drew me in, and there was a constant feeling of tension throughout.

The ending was satisfying, although bittersweet, and I have a feeling this story will stay with me for a long time!

Overall, it was a fantastic read, and I'm very excited to visit the O'Rourkes again after finding out there's a part two on the way.

If you want to find out if Brendan escapes his families clutches, then you'll just have to pick it up and find out for yourself!

Synopsis :
Brendan O’Rourke is trying to distance himself from his family and his past. He’s got himself a degree and a successful career which is worlds away from the breaker’s yard that his father owns and runs.

But creating distance is easier said than done with the O’Rourke family, where violence, fear and intimidation are just a part of everyday life.

When Brendan meets the woman of his dreams, can he escape his family’s clutches or will he be drawn back into their violent and criminal ways?

🪶

The story was split into two parts, the first part was in the past, moving through different months and years, the second being in the present day which was very easy to follow.

I initially struggled to like Brendan but as the story unfolded and I learned more about him and his violent past, I became more sympathetic and willed him to find the courage to stand up to his domineering, bully of a father.

This was an extremely dramatic and at times, harrowing tale full of interesting characters with some that I enjoyed disliking immensely. A story that packed a real punch, was filled with menace and intrigue and I was hooked from the beginning.

🪶

Thank you so much to @harri_atkins_author for sending me the most beautiful book parcel 🫶🏼

A striking debut novel that I would describe as rich, passionate, deep, dark, and vivid.
It's quite a grim tale that pushes the boundaries of some really disturbing and sadly authentic scenes.

I felt drawn to the story of the O'Rourkes, a highly dysfunctional family with many siblings that all have a childhood filled with barbarity, violence, and petty crime. But then there is Brendan, who grew up feeling distant from his siblings and detached from his parents' values.
Brendan has goals for his life. The only one to attend university and dreams of change. When Brendan meets the love of his life, he does everything to prevent his past from corrupting his future. But the O'Rourkes are a formidable force, and it's not long before they shatter all hope.

This is a dark abhorrent story. Which dives into family toxicity unlike anything I've read before. One calamitous event leads to the next, which are just as destructive and all the more painful.

The author dissects the O'Rourkes as a family but also individually: their savage behaviors, continuous conflict, and abusive patterns. They have no clear boundaries, leading to emotional dysregulation and acts of impulse. Although a normal environment to them, it's perplexing to outsiders.

The character development was great and meaningful. The O'Rourkes were fierce, intense, and forceful, which in contrast painted other characters, such as Jemima, as gentle and reposeful. Equally as compelling but caused a conspicuous atmosphere change within the novel.

The book is separated into two parts. The first creates a picture of Brendan's chaotic upbringing and his murky transition between childhood and adulthood. The second focuses on current events and shifts the intensity of what's to come. Personally, the first half was slightly disjointed with its large timeline jumps, and I found it difficult to keep track of the focused time period. The second half was more fluid with a linear momentum, which made it easier to engage with. Nonetheless, the first half provided the main cement of the story and allows the reader to recognise the undertones for the rest of the book.

This is a powerful story that almost feels wrong to enjoy because of its sinister tone. The ending was bittersweet but with a lighter mood, which left me feeling very satisfied.

Thank you for sending me this copy of your book @harri_atkins_author in return for my honest review. I will contonue to follow your work and look forward to see what you bring next.

I read this with my buddies, Zoe and Shellie. It was interesting to see our thoughts unfold and different theories we had about the book. Similar yet different in some ways.

Wow! This is one dark and deeply disturbing psychological thriller, made all the more so by the fact that certain events feel so very true to life. Having worked in the CJS previously, I’m not surprised by some of the actions of this particular criminal family.

Much of the book makes for uncomfortable reading - the author, Harri Atkins, does not shy away from detailing several characters’ cruelty. It’s a gripping, brutal read with complex characters and relationships, and therein lies its power and appeal. Throughout the book, I felt very much as if I was holding my breath, turning the pages wondering what on earth was going to happen next. Most of the characters are unlikeable but Harri details their lives and inner turmoil in a way that you can empathise with many of them. Such is the power of her writing.

The first part introduces the reader to the dynamics of this complicated, toxic family and spans different time lines and events in Brendan’s life. I was left in no doubt as to why Brendan was so desperate to walk away and forge a new life for himself.

Certain events set in motion feelings of betrayal and resentment for several characters, and are the catalyst for what happens in the second part, where Brendan finds himself, to put it mildly, in ‘deep water’, having introduced Jemima, his new bride, to his family. (Re the introduction, I have to confess, I was screaming Noooooo and then WHY?)

As regards, Brendan, the jury is out on my feelings for him. No doubt damaged by his upbringing, he is a troubled and complicated character - part villain and part hero…almost. At times, I loathed him whilst at others I felt deeply sorry for him, again a testament to the impact of the writing. That said, I doubt I’d be as forgiving of his decisions as Jemima.

The final chapters are very much a rollercoaster of a ride, with Harri expertly building the tension. Divided loyalties and betrayal (featured throughout the book) really come to the fore, and I really didn’t know which way the ending was going to go. I won’t say too much about it - suffice to say it was bittersweet, and I’m not sure I can forgive Harri for one aspect of it 😉. IYKYK!

Still, this was an easy 5 stars for me and a brilliant debut. I can’t wait to see where Harri takes this family next. Thank you so much to the author for a gifted copy in exchange for an honest review - I loved it!

BOOK REVIEW ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Wow this was a fantastic read. I was lucky enough to be sent a copy by the author @harri_atkins_author and I’m so glad I got to read this book.

Inside the cuckoos nest focuses on a violent dysfunctional family, that are close knit but disloyal and lead a criminal lifestyle. The ruler of the roost, their father Lenny is a vile man who uses his family members for his own selfish gains. They are all adults and not everyone of them live in the family home but their father has an invisible force that pulls them back to him everytime and no one would ever turn down his requests. No matter the costs.

The title is so perfect for this novel, a cuckoo in the nest in nature is known as an unwelcome intruder and there is many of those within their family walls. Also a cuckoo lays eggs in other birds nests, you will see similarities here between the brothers jealously over each others relationships.

At the heart of the story is Brendan. He makes a huge, awful mistake at the beginning and his family single him out and practically abandon him until they find a use for him. The whole family are painted as awful characters but for some reason I couldn’t dislike Brendan and I had a lot of empathy for him. He still seemed to have some morals and still tried to save the ones that mattered. Despite the ugliness of some of the family members (I really despised Liam for example!) there is some you feel for and it’s mainly the outsiders.

The end is jaw dropping and tense and makes you want to read it all at lightening speed. @harri_atkins_author builds up the tension and changes the tone in her writing and you can feel the atmosphere change. It left me with a pain in my stomach. I really felt like I knew them all in depth.

A fantastic debut novel and I would highly suggest everyone reads it so I can discuss it properly without giving anything away! Anyone who loves a bit of drama, grit, criminal activity and dysfunctional families then this one is for you :)

From the cover I would never expect the story to be so heavy and traumatic!

We follow Brendan as the main character throughout the book starting with part 1 in the past flipping through the years setting the undertones and story of where it all went wrong and how Brendan is dragged back into his families horrid secrets, criminality, betrayal and lies.
To say they are a dysfunctional family is a massive understatement.
The beautifully descriptive writting draws you in and you can imagine being right there, which for some of the story lines can really make you feel uncomfortable. A good writer makes you feel. And I certainly felt. I felt angry, disgusted, frustrated, shocked, sad, horrified, and heartbroken so many times I can’t even count.

Brendan’s desire to keep his past and family well and truly out of his present and future back fires spectacularly with devastating consequences.

I did find some of the early storyline very hard to read in that it was so descriptive of a certain scene that I felt very uncomfortable and felt maybe that particular scene could have been less descriptive but still brought home the point. But then that wouldn’t have been in keeping with the rest of the way Harri writes and maybe be a ‘me problem’ but it didn’t detract from reading more and really enjoying the book.

Harri really gets into the nitty gritty of the O’Roukes and I gasped in shock and didn’t see things coming for most of the story.

I would definitely recommend checking for triggers, this book has many!

It’s such a darker story than the cover would lead you to believe. One that had me turning page after page. I really enjoyed Harri’s writing style and the character development was coated in cleverness! I ended up feeling sorry for and liking a character I really hated at the start and for most of it!

This book will stay with me for a while and won’t easily be forgotten the well thought out plot filled with lies and deceit make for a compelling read.

What an incredibly powerful book. I absolutely loved this. I couldn't put it down and I didn't want it to end. It felt unique and was completely different to anything I have read before.

Meet the O'Rourkes, a dysfunctional family, violent and shocking. They would rather use their fists to settle scores than discussion and negotiation. Brendan O'Rourke is the second eldest of the family, and he is desperate to break free of the shackles of a controlling and vicious father, Lester, Lyla the mother and his siblings who fall in line behind the father.

Brendan's attempts to carve a life outside of the family lead to a successful career and meeting Jemima, the love of his life who he wants to keep separate from his home life. The ties that bind Brendan to his family are impossible to break though and he continually gets dragged back by his father.

There are some quite shocking and disturbing moments, unspeakable crimes are committed and the lengths that the family will go to are truly horrific.

The cast of characters are incredibly well written. You really are drawn into all of their lives, their struggles, the terrible decisions that they make. I loved that I was challenged by them. I was made to seriously think about what they were doing and the outrageous actions they took throughout the book.

I thought Brenda was a brilliant character, flawed, dark, fighting against the family order of things. But some of his behaviour was disgraceful. I felt completely drawn to him though as he sought to survive against the damage inflicted by generations that kept getting passed down the family line.

It felt real and authentic. I felt like I was being pulled from drama to another. This was gripping and thought provoking, from the very first page. I was taken on a rollercoaster of emotions right through to the really mesmerising ending.

A brilliant read. Thoroughly recommend this.

Book Review: Inside the cockoos nest by Harri Atkins

From the opening pages, Harri’s writing draws you into a world that feels intimate, tense, and deeply unsettling. There is a constant sense that something is wrong, that danger and damage live just beneath the surface. Her storytelling is raw, controlled, and immersive, pulling you forward even when the subject matter makes parts of the story genuinely hard to read.

At the heart of this novel is a toxic, dysfunctional family shaped by crime, abuse, and blackmail. Through dual timelines, Harri slowly reveals the past that formed Brendan O’Rourke and the family he is desperate to escape. Each revelation is carefully paced, never rushed, allowing the weight of generational trauma to land fully. The way she unveils the truth piece by piece creates exceptional character development and makes the emotional impact even stronger.

Brendan’s reluctance to bring Jemima into his family speaks volumes. It is not just fear, but a protective instinct born from survival, from knowing exactly how damaging love and loyalty can become when they are tangled with violence and control. This tension adds a quiet ache to the story and makes every choice feel painfully real.

This is not an easy read, but it is a powerful one. Harri does not shy away from the ugliness of these dynamics, yet she never exploits them. Instead, she writes with empathy and restraint, showing how deeply family can shape us, for better or for worse, and how hard it is to break free from what we were raised inside.
The ending is bittersweet, haunting, and perfectly earned.

I genuinely cannot believe this is a debut novel. The confidence in Harri Atkins’ writing, the emotional depth of her characters, and the control she shows over such heavy material feel far beyond a first book. Inside the Cuckoo’s Nest is unforgettable and one I will never forget. A true Gem. I highly recommend. I rated it 5 ⭐️

4.5🌟

What a dramatic and intense family saga this was! Such a brilliant read!

Lester is the head of the O’Rourke family. He’s brutal and often angry, and his sense of justice often leads to beatings for his sons. The family name, and his word, mean everything to him and he rules the roost like the bully he is. He has taught his sons to settle a matter by using their fists.

It’s from this, that Brendan wants to make his escape. He hates working in the scrapyard and wants to make a break and go to university, to find a better life for himself, away from the father he hates and the family dynamics between him and his brothers. As Brendan tries to escape the sticky gossamer thread which his family have spun around him, they pull that thread all the tighter and won’t let him go.

The story is told in two parts, with the first part focusing on the past. It alternates between a few years ago to a few months ago and although that may sound confusing, it works really well. We get to know the brothers, their father and the women who come into their lives.

The second part is all about the present and was equally as gripping. You can feel the tension streaming off the pages with the anger this family holds on to, and particularly when their jealousy of Brendan takes over and they try to bring him down a peg or two. It’s raw, it’s violent and it’s hostile: their simmering anger is never far from the surface.

The plot is pure brilliance and, even though it’s quite brutal at times, I absolutely loved it. I was gripped throughout, read about the family’s antics openmouthed and rooted for Brendan from the sidelines. Would he escape his family’s clutches or not…?

What an amazing debut novel this is!

*Book Review*

First of all I would like to thank @harri_atkins_author for sending me her debut novel to read in return for my honest review..

I went into this one not really knowing what I was in for and it turns out it was not my usual genre, but I did enjoy it.

I found Atkins’ writing style to be enjoyable and easy to follow. It was dark, and rather disturbing in parts which is what I love about a book, the gorier the better if you ask me! The brutally in some of the scenes was just fab! I would advise checking trigger warnings though just incase you’re a bit squeamish!

There was brilliant tension built up throughout the story with twists during the novel, some that I expected and some that totally threw! This is one toxic family! Like nothing I have read before! One you would NOT want to mess with!

I must admit I defo preferred the second part to the first. I had spoke to Harri about this along the way whilst reading. I just feel part two flowed a lot better than the first, as part one for me felt a little bit all over the spot. I would have much preferred it for all the era to be clumped together as one and we work our way to the present tense as the story progress instead of jumping from time line to another. However this did not ruin the story for me I just found it a bit hard to get through and concentrate on what was what! All this is down to personal preference though. Takes nothing away from the story!

The ending was a little bit but was just bittersweet and a good wrap up!

Overall this was a great debut novel exhibiting just what some families will do to protect their name! I will be keeping my eye out for more of Harri’s work in the future! Thanks once again for allowing me to sample your work!

I read this one with my besties of course! Head over to their pages to checkout their thoughts on this one! @katies_cosy_reading_corner @northyorkshirereader

Inside The Cuckoo’s Nest follows Brendan O’Rourke, who grew up feeling he was different from his family - a formidable force that exist against a back drop of petty crime, feuds and violence. So, when he meets the love of his life, Brendan’s determined to keep his past and present as far apart as possible. But despite his best intentions, his family have other plans to get what they want, by any means. Can Brendan keep his past hidden in order to protect the future he’s always wanted?

Inside The Cuckoo’s Nest is a powerful, raw and thought-provoking debut that has exceeded every high expectation I had after reading so many amazing reviews for it.

We follow Brendan over two parts: the past and the present. This dual timeline fits the narrative perfectly, as it slowly unravels the layers of intergenerational trauma rooted in what can only be described as an intensely toxic and dysfunctional family.

Into The Cuckoo’s Nest is a very character driven read, with each character expertly written to evoke a powerful emotional response. The whole family, especially Brendan, are flawed and complex personalities and despite the horror of some of their actions, it’s impossible not to feel a connection to them. The characters’ authenticity and depth curates not only hatred and shock, but pity, empathy and sadness - making them genuinely hard to forget or dismiss. I’m so pleased Harri is writing a sequel, as I need more of the O’Rourkes already!

The narrative itself is real, messy, and compelling. It’s packed full of passion, violence, betrayal and heartbreak and despite the difficult themes and brutality, it’s hard to tear yourself away from the pages. The ending is beautifully bittersweet, but I wouldn’t have wanted it written any other way. I have to applaud Harri for writing such a complex and engrossing debut.

Thank you so much to the wonderful Harri Atkins for sending me this beautiful copy of Inside The Cuckoo’s Nest to read and review. My opinions are my own.

I finished this book a few days ago but I needed a moment to gather my thoughts because it deserves more than a rushed reaction. But before I even start, take a look at the Goodreads rating - 4.71 – that alone tells you what you’re walking into. Not just good. Not just great, but truly exceptional.

The book follows the O’Rourke family, and I must say that this clan is a study in dysfunction. Lenny, the patriarch, is controlling and impossible to warm up to. I kept hoping Lyla might soften the blows for the kids, but that hope fades pretty quickly.

This is a character-driven story in the best way. The author brings each family member to life so clearly that you feel like you understand exactly what drives them. It’s a big cast, but every single arc is compelling. I kept turning pages because I genuinely wanted to stay with them.

The story takes some dark turns, and even though Brendan makes his share of questionable choices, I couldn’t help rooting for him and Jemima to find a way out and start over. I love when a book pushes me to sit with the characters’ choices and ask myself what they could have done differently.

The ending is a lot at once; tense, hopeful, unsettling, and strangely satisfying. I so hope the author has more planned for these characters because I’d follow them into another chapter in a heartbeat.

Now confession time. I kept seeing glowing reviews from my UK bookstagram friends, so when the author offered me a copy, I was thrilled. But then the worry crept in, what if I ended up being the one person who didn’t click with it? Two pages in and that fear vanished. The praise made perfect sense. Which leaves me wondering, how is this not already a massive bestseller sitting at the top of everyone’s tbr? Please go read this book then come back and lets discuss.

I’ve just finished Inside the Cuckoo’s Nest by Harri Atkins. I was HOOKED! It’s one of those books that grips you tighter the further you go. I didn’t want to put it down.

At its heart, this is the story of Brendan O’Rourke, born into a violent, dysfunctional family where secrets and grudges are all part of their make-up. Brendan longs for something different - a quieter, better life - but escaping isn’t simple when his past is always waiting to drag him back.

Some scenes are tough. This book comes with plenty of trigger warnings! It’s part of what makes the novel so compelling: it doesn’t shy away from the damage that some families do to one another. I was fascinated by the way their generational trauma was present in every decision, shaping lives in ways that felt both inevitable and tragic.

For me, the book really came into its own in the second half. Everything carefully laid out in the beginning starts to crack open and spiral, and from that point I honestly couldn’t look away. Brendan’s choices, the family dynamics, the sense of fate catching up with everyone… It’s explosive and intense and raw.

I read this as a buddy read and it was absolutely perfect to experience alongside others. There’s so much to unpick, so many moments to gasp over and dissect together. It’s the kind of book that thrives on discussion, where sharing the drama makes it all the more addictive.

If you’re drawn to dark family sagas, moral complexity, and stories that leave you thinking about the cost of the past, this is one you must pick up.

Big thanks go to Harri Atkins for gifting me this book in return for an honest review, and also for taking the time to join our buddy chat once we finished so we could have a brilliant Q&A. It has genuinely been fantastic 🩵🪺

Inside the Cuckoo’s Nest by Harri Atkins left me completely shocked. I honestly don’t think I can fully put into words how much I enjoyed this book. It is extremely well written, and I was immediately drawn into the deeply dysfunctional O’Rourke family, each member hiding countless secrets. I became so invested that I genuinely did not want to put the book down, even though I found it difficult to like most of the characters.

The O’Rourke family is a formidable force, surrounded by petty crime, family feuds, and violence. Every member shares an intense need to survive, and they will do whatever it takes to ensure that, no matter the consequences. Reading this story makes you reflect on your own morals and question whether you would have acted any differently if you were in their position.

The main character, Brendan, left me with a wide range of emotions. At times I hated him, and at others I felt deep sympathy for him. His heartbreak and sorrow were portrayed so realistically that I truly felt them alongside him.

The novel is divided into parts, with the first section exploring three different timelines from the family’s past. These timelines eventually come together in part two, which takes place in the present. This structure adds depth and helps the reader better understand the characters and their actions.

Judging by the cover, you would never expect such a hard-hitting and traumatic read. I don’t think this review can fully do the book justice, but if there is one book I would strongly recommend, it is Inside the Cuckoo’s Nest.

I couldn’t believe my luck when Harri messaged me asking if I would like a copy of her debut novel. I jumped at the chance and I’m so glad I did. I am not sure how I am going to do this book justice. But here goes …

The story follows Brendan O’Rourke and his, dare I say, dysfunctional family. Nearly every character is deeply flawed. There is trauma, violence, heartbreak, outright abhorrent behaviour, but at the core, a story of survival. I was captivated from the first chapter.

We see into Brendan’s past, revealing his questionable choices and from there we are brought to the present, where he’s trying to regain some control of his life.

One of my favourite parts to the story was how Harri introduced the characters as the story developed and we learnt more about them bit by bit. This is what made the book hard to put down. There is an array of characters. Each one totally unique and so well written.

The writing was absolutely stunning. There is a lot of difficult parts to read and most of the characters are hard to like, but Harri somehow makes it impossible for you to look away. The family was messy and very toxic, but at the same time fascinating and compelling.

The ending was perfect in my opinion. It was bittersweet but it was a conclusion, as a reader, I loved. I adore an ending that makes me react. There’s nothing worse than reading a fabulous book but the finale lets it down. This one was just right and one that will linger.

I love a family drama and this one certainly packs a punch. I absolutely devoured it.

One of my top reads of 2025 easily. I wholeheartedly recommend this book.

This book is one if my favourites this year. I absolutely loved it, it was such a mesmerising read. I won’t do the boon justice so will keep this brief but urge you to go and read this book!

Inside The Cuckoo’s Nest is a story of family dysfunction, trauma, and survival. We follow Brendan who is growing up in a large family where violence is normal and whilst trying to break free from them he keeps being drawn back for different reasons.

There are plenty of parts that are hard to read, but it is written in such a way that you want to keep reading. I found it incredibly interesting that we find out about each person in more detail, what has shaped and affected them along the way. It’s an addictive read and very hard to put down, the writing is beautiful and also creates an atmosphere that feels claustrophobic and foreboding. It’s literary fiction but reads like a thriller towards the end, my heart was in my throat.

I loved the book and it’s exactly my kind of read. I do love reading about intergenerational trauma and family dysfunction, and this was incredibly well laid out so that you can really see why people behave in the way they do.

After seeing so many incredible reviews, I did have high expectations. And this certainly didn't dissapoint.

This is such an atmospheric, tense and gripping novel that I really couldn't put down.
We follow both the past and present events of the O'Rourke family, the flaws and complexity of everything they go through. Each family member is brought to life in horrific and gripping ways.
I have such a love/hate relationship with our Brendan. He is so incredibly flawed, his violent upbringing had me tearing up many times.
But he tries, he tries so hard to keep his love with Jemima separated from his past and his family. He certainly makes some objectionable actions when he is dragged back into his family life, but I couldn't help rooting for them both.
My sweet Riley, my favourite throughout. I was definitely crying by the ending

This is both very plot and character driven, from the beginning we are thrust into rawness and violence, and I expected nothing less.
This is an incredibly dark story, that makes you love and hate each character all at once
Please check trigger warning for this one! Its gripping, raw, and most certainly unsettling.
I enjoyed every minute of reading this

Have you ever picked up a book and not been able to put it down? This has been me since this book turned up yesterday. I was kindly gifted this book by Harri to read and review. I am blown away by the brilliant story line.

Blurb:
Brendan O’Rourke grew up feeling he was different from his family. So, when he meets the love of his life he’s determined to keep his past and presents as far apart as possible.

However the O’Rourke’s are a formidable force that exist against a backdrop of petty crime, family feuds and violence.

Despite Brendan’s best intentions, his family has other plans… plans that involve using any means to get what they want.

Can Brendan keep his past hidden in order to protect the future he’s always wanted?

Review - This is definitely a five star read and could possibly be my favourite read of the year. The characters are amazing, I deeply felt for Jemima and what she goes through for love. I was fully wrapped up in this family’s secrets, behaviours and everything else. I couldn’t put the book down. It has left me feeling lost for words. This is a book everyone should have on their tbr list! What a brilliant read! 🩵

What a fantastic read. I found this book incredibly thought-provoking and emotionally gripping. Without giving too much away, the writing is immersive and sharp—drawing you right into the chaotic, guilt-ridden world of Brendan. You feel his anxiety, the crushing weight of his secrets, and the desperate need to break free from the chains of his past. I truly empathised with him.

And let’s talk about the characters… Some of them I absolutely hated—and you’re clearly meant to. The way Harri Atkins crafts these flawed, complex personalities is brilliant.

The novel dives deep into how your childhood shapes your identity. It’s raw, messy, emotional—and packed with twists I never saw coming. The backdrop of a criminal family, Brendan’s journey to escape, and a love that sparks his fight for more… it’s addictive.

I’ve heard book two is on the way, and I cannot wait to see where this story goes next. If you’re into gritty family drama, emotional depth, and unexpected turns—this one’s for you.

This book had me enthralled from the first page. The author does a beautiful job immersing the reader in the setting of the Lowlands and into the lives of the O’Rourke family, a complicated, toxic family with many secrets. The way in which the author describes the characters is captivating and her characterizations throughout the book stay true to each character’s persona. The reader can visualize every detail and every movement as if watching a movie. I felt so invested in what happened to each character and even though, there were so many toxic people in the book, I was dying to learn more about their journeys. It’s a rare skill for an author to be able to create diabolical characters that the reader finds an attachment to, but Atkins does this to perfection. The story moves seamlessly, and I couldn’t put the book down, having to force myself to stop reading well into the night. The pacing is perfect with the surprises strategically placed at the right moments. I can’t wait to read her next book! What an absolute pleasure it was to become part of this world for a few days!

We follow Brendan O’Rourke, desperate to escape the clutches of his family, a backdrop of petty crime, family feuds, violence and control.

A tale of life, love, loss and the hardships endured. With twists, betrayal and a real focus on the characters and their relationships to one another. The writing was beautiful, descriptive without being overly so and I was gripped immediately.

At times my heart broke for the younger Brendan and his brother Sean, and the childhood they suffered.

There are so many good characters each rich with their own heartache or despair, desperate to escape the lives they have been trapped in.

An often haunting story of the ties of secrets and betrayal - family, consequence, trauma and dare I say hope.

A fast paced, thrilling read that left me anxious for what would come next and has stayed with me long after finishing.

Please check the trigger warnings as it deals with some dark themes.

Thank you to Harri for the gifted copy to review.

Inside The Cuckoo’s Nest is the best debut novel I’ve read, an absolutely amazing book. It has everything: a dysfunctional family at its heart, plenty of drama, sharp suspense, and above all, powerful betrayal. Every part of the story feels real, with no over-the-top moments, just brilliant, believable writing.
The characters are described so vividly that I felt as if I were watching them right in front of me. Harri Atkins’ ability to create such strong emotional connections is first class, and following the characters over a long period of their lives makes the story even more gripping. It keeps you guessing the whole way through.
This novel will stay with me for a long time, and I was genuinely sorry when it ended simply because it was that good.
I absolutely can’t wait to read the next book from this talented author. Harri Atkins has set an incredibly high bar with this stunning debut.

You know it's going to be good when you register your first "jaw-drop" moment on page 36!!

Meet the O'Rourkes, probably one of the most toxic, dysfunctional families I've ever had the pleasure of reading about!

Wow, I'm not sure where to start with my thoughts and review for this one, but I was drawn in from the early pages, kept invested in the twisted family affairs, and gripped right to those final chapters!

Harri delivers a raw and emotive, character driven story that sparks all the emotions and has you pulled between loathing characters but then also debating whether their behaviours are a result of the abusive parenting they've experienced!

The way this book is written is incredible! To be able to craft such a story and manage to have the reader feel like their on a journey, invested in to the characters is a rare gift, and that is exactly what Harri has managed to do!

I really enjoyed the writing style of this, it's dark and gritty and disturbing in parts.
The family is so toxic.
I loved the brutality of some of the scenes, which some people may find quite hard, so maybe check trigger warnings just incase.
The tension that is built up throughout the story was brilliant with twists and shocks along the way
I loved the bittersweet ending.

I preferred Part 2 to Part 1 - Part 1 is separated into different timelines, but I personally felt like it jumped around too much and it was getting confusing, I would have preferred it to be all one time jump together. Working for the furthest back to closer to present day.

A great debut novel

A huge thank you to the author for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review

Oh my days! This book 🥰 absolutely beautiful, how on earth it is a debut? Stunning writing and the most amazing characters, this cannot be the last we see of them?

I fell in love with Brendan, I felt all emotions whilst reading about him, I was constantly rooting for him, the boy done good considering the dysfunctional family he was surrounded by. Lester was just despicable and to was Liam!!.

There is such much going on in this book, it really is one to be binged in one sitting. I don’t want to risk spoilers, just add this to your TBR!!

A deeply unsettling novel of family dynamics, manipulation and trauma. It left me uncomfortable in places.

This book is filled with flawed characters and I didn’t know whether to hate them or feel empathy for them. Some of them I loathed more than others.

Beautifully written and perfectly descriptive, this book hooked me from the start and I totally get why people are shouting about this book!

This review will not do this book justice I fear. It’s so much more than I expected.

There is one hell of a story within these pages!

Beautifully written with a strength of story that kept me hooked right to the very end The characterisation had me drawn into the O’Rourkes dysfunctional family from the start. I loathed some, empathised with others and fell in love with a few.
There was a sense of unease throughout and filled with family fueds, betrayal, violence, crime and love.
The start of the story and the ending fuse beautifully together and I can’t wait to read the sequel.
